Grace brought the greatest justice through the gravest injustice: the death of Jesus. Peace brought the greatest victory from the gravest loss: the resurrection of Jesus.
Paul shows us the gospel doesn’t advance by strategic plans but by surrendered servants.
Discipleship requires we learn about the full armor of God by putting it on every day.
We are not responsible to defeat Satan. Satan has already lost. Our calling is to put on the full armor of God and then to stand firm.
What if that’s the way—walking onto the battlefield of the Spirit bearing nothing more or nothing less than the image of God? is the story. Slavery is the fiction.
Freedom in Christ is the story. Slavery is the fiction.
We can’t become perfect parents, but we can become parents of extraordinary grace.
Christian marriage serves as a type of everyday temple where Christ reveals himself through the sacrificial love of husband and wife.
The fruit of surrender is splendor.
The Word of God reveals a model of power that centers around the surrender of control and the reversal of hierarchy.
Human beings, created in the image of God, are made to be inhabited by the Holy Spirit.
What if we are all asleep?
This is not about broken rules but broken people, not condemning labels but creative love.
Sexual sin is sin of another order because of the way it breaks down and fragments our core identity and does damage to the image of God in us.
As image-bearers of the triune God, we are meant to live this graced pattern of life together for the sake of each other and the world.
The effectiveness of our mission to the world is in direct proportion to the quality of our relationships with each other.
We grieve the Holy Spirit when we deny the power of God in our everyday lives.
With our words we can bless or curse, build up or tear down, berate or benefit.
To be created in the image of God means many things, but perhaps the most surprising thing it means is to be vulnerable.
In this episode, Dan Wilt and J. D. engage in a profound conversation about spiritual formation and the power of the Holy Spirit. They explore the history and impact of the Vineyard Movement, emphasizing the importance of living out one's faith actively rather than passively. Through personal stories and reflections, they discuss the transformative power of Jesus in everyday life, encouraging listeners to take risks in faith and partner with God in their daily interactions. This most essential process of transformation, of becoming a human being who lives and loves like God lives and loves, will not happen apart from other people.
A martyr, in the New Testament sense, is not someone who is going to die for Jesus but someone who has already died with him—and been raised from the dead!
We must learn to take off our masks and meet one another in our places of weakness rather than our strength
We need these gifts in order for the body of Christ to be built up in order for the love of God to be manifest through the people of God that the world may come to know Jesus.
There is no pattern of the cross apart from the person of Jesus. It’s why we follow him.
In the end it won’t matter what church you were a part of. Only one thing will matter: Are you part of the one body?
The one category to which all the followers of Jesus belong is the category of the called.
The Spirit works directly and humanly, yet supernaturally, through men and women.
The pure and powerful essence and nature of God is love.
Faith is the Holy Spirit–infused realm of human activity by which the awakening movement of divine grace moves in the world.
The gospel is not information and cogitation. It is revelation and transformation.
Have you considered what might be the stewardship of God’s grace given to you for others?
The mission of the gospel will be accomplished in and through our relationships, or not at all.
The secret to peace is found here: in his own body on the cross.
Jesus, we want you to be more of the centerpiece of our lives.
Grace is the infectious, transforming embrace of God.
For this special bonus episode, we're bringing J. D.'s opening talk at our recent Pastor's Retreat. We hope you enjoy J. D.'s reflection on Jesus' invitation to "Come with me, by yourselves, to a quiet place, and get some rest."
All we must do is say yes to Jesus with our lives. He has done everything else.
We tend to live at the level of our behaviors, which are themselves symptomatic of a deeper problem. Sinful behavior is a symptom. Our sinful nature is the problem.
This is the way of holy discontent. It is a willingness to question and doubt everything but the Word of God.
Followers of Jesus, you are seekers of the first order, whose appetite is not satisfied by discovery but deepened.
We need not confront the sick with scorn. We only need to present them with the cure, backed up, of course, by the evidence of its working in our own lives.
God has a plan, but it’s not for my life. The plan is his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
We will discover our blessedness to the degree we face our brokenness.
Because I belong to Jesus, all that belongs to Jesus belongs to me.
Real Christianity is about belonging exclusively and entirely to Jesus—simply, totally, gloriously.
We do not live our lives for God. We live our lives from God. We do not work for Jesus. We work from Jesus.
Faith is not believing the right things about Jesus. Faith is believing Jesus.
How deep is my desire for Jesus?
And what does the change look like? It looks like the movement from darkness to light, from death to life, and from chaos to new creation
We must first receive the love of Jesus, which is to receive Jesus and all he is.
We plant the seed and we harvest the crop, but the journey from seed to seeds is the work and will of God.
What if change happens not by resolve but by repentance?
And I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Jesus knows the issue is at the level of our will. He wants access to our volition.
Do I really want to change?
If Jesus is agape love and Jesus is in me, I am agape love.
Love is the measure.
Our job is to plant the seed of God’s Word in our lives—every single day.
Transformation continues, is carried forward, and completed by Jesus.
Whoever has ears, let them hear.
Could it be that we fundamentally misunderstand the whole process and dynamic of transformation?
Our physical bodies grow by inches. The Bible indicates our souls grow by degrees
Save us from the trap of becoming negative about ourselves and lead us into the solution of becoming super positive about you.

Am I growing?
There is nothing quite so powerful as a well-asked question.
Lord Jesus, we praise you because we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
I am an unbelievable, inconceivable, unrepeatable miracle of God!
With you I am well pleased: And I’m proud of you.

Righteousness does not come from following the rules but from coming to know the Ruler.
Fasting is a way of bringing to the surface the broken attachments of our deep identity so that we might be healed.
We must change our relationship with the one necessary thing: our proximity to Jesus.
Our deep inner rumblings of holy discontent are the birth pangs of consecration that lead to transformation.
Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.
Martha wanted Jesus to come to her home. Mary wanted Jesus.
Consecration is a way of showing up before God that says simply and humbly, “I’m here and I’m yours.”
Transformation is not a good person becoming a better person. It’s a dead person becoming a truly alive person.
Lent is the journey of transformation, of reversal even, in which we are turned from ashes into fire.
On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus unveils and reveals to us what we are meant to become—ordinary human beings invested and infused with the transcendent presence of God.
Holy discontent is the sense of having a splinter in your soul.
“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
To know you is to love you, and to love you is to know you more.
You will need to shift out of the gear of striving and into the gear of surrender—less taking on and more letting go.
In this episode, JD and guest Mark McGovern delve into the themes of prayer and spiritual awakening, centered around Mark's new book, "The Shining One." The conversation explores Mark's journey from his roots in the Midwest to his current role in San Francisco, where he leads a church and a prayer movement called "Pray the Bay." They discuss the transformative power of prayer, the importance of consecration, and the Beatitudes as a framework for spiritual growth. Mark shares personal stories of revival and the impact of prayer on his community, emphasizing the need for a prayerful life that aligns with Jesus' teachings. The episode concludes with a prayer for the book's success and its potential to inspire a spiritual awakening in the Bay Area and beyond.
The goal is not to amass knowledge about something. The goal is to grow in knowing someone—namely, Jesus.
A person can learn all the answers to all the questions and still fail the test.
“Who do you say I am?”
We must deal with the condition of our fallenness rather than endlessly try to mitigate our failures.
The Word of God needs no comment.
To bear the image of your Creator means when other people see you, they see your Creator.
Believe doesn’t mean just accept it. Believe means lean in with your whole weight.
We must pull the fire alarm in here. Awakening starts with me.
Lent is an invitation to break the predictable pace of another trip around the sun and to get in step with the movement of the story of Jesus.
If there is no way to be forgiven, then there is no hope!
Those who trust in the Son are joined to him, raised from the dead, and live in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
Sinful humanity cannot exist in the presence of God. But God does not give up on his desire to share his divine eternal life with his human creatures.
There is something spiritually sweet about prayer. It pleases the Lord and makes the world pleasant and aromatic.
What might at first seem like the most boring part of the Bible is in fact one of the best parts—human sin doesn't ultimately stop the purposes of God!
You are what you love.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself. Humility is thinking less about oneself.
Evil cannot be overcome by evil. Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Hate cannot defeat hate.
How is your life being built like a home whose rooms are furnished with wisdom and knowledge and treasure?
Our chief calling and highest ambition is to apply ourselves to understanding and appropriating and creatively enacting the meaning of these five words: "As I have loved you."
Humility is the deeply human disposition of a person who has come to know and embrace their deepest worth.

Poverty is a diabolical reality, and to the extent we judge the poor for their poverty we perpetuate the cycle.
In the final analysis there are only two choices: humility or humiliation. Wisdom chooses while there's still time.
The meaning of life is learning to love like God loves, with creative power. The process is refinement.
We don’t put our trust in our plans. Nor do we trust that our plans are God’s will. We trust God.
Gentleness does not mean softness. It is probably more clearly seen in the way one expresses firmness.
Wisdom is the everyday expression of skillful love
There is no such thing as easy money.
The peace of God transcends. It actually breaks through the hard shell of anxiety and creates an alternative environment in our inner world.
Trust simply cannot be built on betrayal.
Our words may be the greatest power we possess.
The houses of our lives will not be built on the pillars and pilings of wisdom unless our days are built on them.
Wisdom begins with listening.
In this engaging conversation, J.D. Walt and Dan Wilt explore the profound themes of Lent and spiritual transformation through the lens of J.D.'s upcoming book, "Jesus Asking." They discuss the significance of Lent as a journey of questions rather than answers, emphasizing the importance of moving from self-improvement to transformation by embracing the questions Jesus poses. The dialogue delves into the concept of the Christian calendar as a linear, movemental journey, highlighting the cyclical nature of spiritual growth and the role of community in fostering relational wholeness. They reflect on the transformative power of questions, the journey through Lent, and the communal aspect of faith, encouraging listeners to engage deeply with the spiritual journey and the questions that lead to personal and communal transformation. As we read our way into the Word, the Spirit will lead our path into the world.
Wisdom fashions an everyday world shaped by the Word of God.
To be wise is to recognize the close presence of the Lord and to live life in a way that honors him.
Whatever captures our focused attention captures us.
Resolve to be all-in today. Abandon yourself to God in trust and submission.
The Bible concerns itself far more with who God wants us to become rather than what we need to know or do.
Bringing this character trait of humility to a very practical outworking, the core requirement for becoming a wise person is teachability.
The awakened life moves. It speaks. It bears witness.
Fear often interprets silence as absence. But Jesus’s calm is not indifference. It is authority at rest.
Fear often interprets silence as absence. But Jesus’s calm is not indifference. It is authority at rest.
Mercy does not shame us awake. Mercy calls us awake.
But Jesus offers something different. Living water. Not a temporary fix, but a spring within.
Desire is not weakness. Desire is often the birthplace of faith.
While Christmas is a profound celebration for those who know and love Jesus, it is even more important for those who don’t.
We aren’t just saved from something but saved for something: to become more like Jesus.
His love unquestionably comes first. Our love is always in response to His.
The kingdom of God presents a different metric of success: love.
There may be multiple right decisions, but a decision made in love is always the best.
The commands of Jesus are commandments of love.
True love, as God demonstrates it, is not self-seeking; it willingly lays down personal comfort, preference, and privilege for the good of another.
God’s glory isn’t tied to any specific form or experience. His glory is in His presence.

In brokenness and need is when the joy of salvation is realized.
Fixing our eyes on Jesus makes joy available to us, even in weariness, discouragement, or suffering, which seek to eclipse the joy we have before us.
This is the scope of God’s redemptive work: Nothing will be left untouched by it.
Through the power of the Spirit, we can affirm and encourage one another in faith, knowing that God’s promises are always best enjoyed together.
