Nobody asks whether their shirt won awards — so why does wine need a gold medal before we trust it? In the finale of our conversation, Karen Green pinpoints the answer: a shirt is visible, brandable, easy. Wine carries so much story and mystique that most buyers feel daunted, a little scared even, and that's exactly why validation matters at the shelf. It's also why the UK press can't resist those blind-tasting surveys where an Aldi champagne beats a Grand Cru and everyone gets to ask what the experts really know. Then Karen opens the door on her Tesco years, back when the UK's biggest grocery retailer received products by post and a meeting with her could make or break a brand. She describes range reviews where seven vitamin products became three, suppliers begging not to be delisted — grown men in tears in front of her — and the part she genuinely loved: negotiating hard, pressing brands to invest, to pay for the gondola ends, the middle of the fixture, pay, pay, pay. After a quick transatlantic detour comparing Shark Tank to Dragon's Den, Forrest closes with one final question: has any product nailed its Buyerology on her lately? Her answer is GIMBER, a ginger-based no-low drink she discovered merchandised next to the fresh ginger in the produce aisle — inspirational placement, zero marketing spend — and now buys by the case. She was sipping one during the interview. The full pour, no fluff. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Wine consumption is sliding in the UK, dipping in France, and the newer generation is reaching for alcohol-free alternatives — so Karen Green went looking for no/low wine in the middle of French wine country. She checked four different retailers. Exactly one carried it. As someone who works with the Quality Food and Drink Awards, she was in the room when the drinks category needed a name for the trend, and the answer was apparently obvious to everyone but her: "no-low." In part two of our conversation, Karen takes us inside the moment every wine lover knows — standing at the fixture, staring down 400 bottles, leaving with one. She maps what the trade calls the buyer's journey: whether you arrived because it's Saturday night, because the day went sideways, or because there's a dinner party to impress, that starting point shapes everything that follows. Along the way she explains why nobody buys the cheapest bottle on the shelf (we go two prices down instead), how France organizes wine by domaine while the UK sells by grape, and why a pretty label wins parties more often than anyone admits. She also shares her honest read on how men and women buy differently — we all think we buy logically, she says, but we buy emotionally — and reveals the presentation trick involving kittens that gets audiences in a buying mood before the salient point ever lands. Victoria opens with her own name, because hosts tend to tiptoe around it — P-E-L-L-E-T-I-E-R — and from there the story moves fast. She was an only child, gifted, and a bit of a loner who genuinely liked the solitude. Her bike was the vehicle for all of it: new parks, new kids, streetlights as the only curfew, and the habit that never left her — watching people and inventing stories about them. She got her first real job at eleven at a hair salon, running the front desk, the cash, the appointments, the sweeping, the towels. She was already five foot eight and passed easily for older. Babysitting on the side paid two dollars an hour. At fourteen she became assistant manager at a shoe store, coaching people decades older than she was. She describes herself as turtle shell outside, marshmallow inside — somewhere between don't mess with me and do you want a hug — but she's clear that the shell came later, built out of a belief that leadership meant all business, all the time, mask on, emotions off. She unlearned that. Vulnerability and empathy, she says, are what actually build trust. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Karen Green has sat on both sides of the buying desk. She started as a retail buyer at Tesco, moved to Boots buying vitamins and supplements, then crossed the table to sell food and drink herself — before a move to the south of France inspired her to pour all of that knowledge into a consultancy and a book. The book is called Buyerology, and the name arrived, as the best ideas do, unexpectedly: on a bus in Reading, when a furniture store called Sofology rolled past the window and lit the spark. In part one of our conversation, Karen breaks down the nuts and bolts of studying the buyer — why understanding how someone buys is the difference between a clear selling message and fumbling around in the dark, and why mass marketing is a losing game for everyone who isn't Coca-Cola or Pepsi. Then she names the mistake she sees constantly, including in wine: founders who build products for themselves and call it a target market, and winemakers who perfect the grape without ever asking who's going to buy the bottle. Her test is disarmingly simple. When a client describes their ideal customer and it sounds suspiciously like the person talking, she tells them exactly what she's thinking: "So that's you." Jeanine Lum never planned to invent anything. She'd been a W2 employee her whole career, spent twenty years in law enforcement, flew part time as a flight attendant for a decade, and had no manufacturing background whatsoever. What she had instead was a series of ruined bottles. One was left behind in a dark car in Paso Robles and pushed its own cork out overnight from heat that wasn't even extreme — she notes that wine starts to suffer around seventy-five degrees, a temperature most people would call comfortable. Another was a cardboard box holding about $1,400 worth of wine that tipped over on a winding road. She went shopping for a fix, spent anywhere from fifty to two thousand dollars a bag, and discovered that every product on the market carried wine without protecting it. The idea that finally worked came from a box of chocolates a friend sent her with an ice pack inside: take the cardboard grid that wine ships in and turn it into a frozen, interlocking chamber @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Forrest closes the series with a true-or-false round, and the fun of it is watching how fast Victoria sorts fact from invention. The executive role at twenty-four is real. The sommelier training in Bordeaux is pure fiction — she went straight into corporate leadership and never detoured. The Turnaround Queen nickname is real too, and when Forrest asks whether that's runway or corporate, she gives the answer nobody expects: corporate, absolutely, though she did walk a runway as a teenager. The turnaround stories are where the episode gets its weight. One came through a consulting engagement with a global organization badly damaged by COVID, whose board mandated thirty percent of the workforce or operating expenses out of the business. She worked directly with the CEO and the board to engineer it. The other is the reason she ended up living in the United States — a company emerging from a dissolved joint venture that rebranded, went public, and then acquired six companies in eighteen months. Compressed, brutal, and exactly the kind of thing she keeps getting called in to do. Then Forrest asks about the TEDx talk, and the tone shifts. She was the opening speaker in Miami on a night themed around resilience, and her definition is more demanding than the usual one. Healthy resilience isn't gritting your teeth and armoring up — she's explicit that a shield of protective armor is not the thing. It's finding a way to process challenge and adversity rather than simply withstand it, and she built a five-step process for doing exactly that. Anyone who heard her story in Part 1 will understand where the framework came from. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Victoria planned the whole Napa and Sonoma trip herself, and she planned it strategically — mostly wineries she and Danny already knew and loved, which she cheerfully admits made the buying decisions easy. It had been fifteen years since her last visit, and it was his first time in wine country at all. The surprises came from the edges of her palate. She's a Sauvignon Blanc and Sancerre person who leans into bold Cabernet, and yet she found herself trying Viognier for the first time and tasting Chardonnays she'd normally skip entirely. Some of it she loved immediately. Some of it she suspects she'll grow into. One stop was purely sentimental: the winery whose wine she and Danny served at their wedding. They went back. Their tastes have changed, they don't love it the way they once did, and she says so without any hand-wringing about it. The tasting room she declined to buy from is the more interesting story. The wine was good. The experience felt stale to her, and that was enough. She's an experience person — the same instinct that governs how she picks restaurants, and the same instinct that put her husband in a mud bath in Calistoga so they'd have a story worth telling later. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. For the finale, Forrest flips the format and puts four multiple-choice questions to Jeanine about the product she spent years building. She handles the first one easily — heat is the enemy, though she notes for the record that she'd prefer to worry about curious seagulls. The quiz opens into the best running conversation of the series, about zippers. Jeanine has strong feelings here, having wrestled with a two-zip cooler that she says takes an act of God to close, and she wants to know whether there's a balance between waterproof and usable. Her own bag runs tight, she admits, which is why it ships with zipper lube — a term Forrest has never heard in his life. She explains the application, then confesses she's only used it once herself. Her husband is the one who bothers. She just muscles it. Forrest catches the shot fired and asks his name, and that's how Jeff ends up mentioned on the podcast. The last question is about freezer discipline, and the answer is all of the above, which leads Jeanine to explain why skipping a pack to make room defeats the purpose — the modular pieces can be repositioned along the bag wall instead of removed, so you keep the full chill while making space for larger bottles or food. Then comes the moment worth staying for. Asked who's been her biggest supporter, Jeanine names her husband, who's watched her stay up half the night with manufacturers. But her biggest critic was her middle daughter, who'd heard years of "I'm going to invent that" and called the ideas silly. When she finally saw this one, she stopped — and thought of every bachelorette party she'd hauled champagne to in a cardboard box. She closes with discount codes for listeners and where to find 3rd Bottle online. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This is the practical episode. Jeanine walks through what you'll find at 3rdbottle.com: two bags, a six-pack and a twelve-pack, each with the interlocking modular ice packs that lie flat in a freezer. The six-pack holds six to eight hours depending on how well you keep it sealed. You can also buy the ice packs on their own if you already own a cooler tall enough to take a wine bottle — the measurements are posted on the site — though she's careful to say she can't promise chill times in a cooler she didn't design. Every bag ships with the ice packs and a condensation towel, the latter existing purely because the packs sweat a little and she didn't like the small pool of water at the bottom, so she had one made to absorb it. Then Forrest asks the question that opens up the best part of the episode: why fill them with water instead of using the pre-filled gel packs everyone else uses? The answer turns out to have four separate layers. Cost and customs came first — chemical fills are treated differently at the border and would have driven the price up. Performance came second, and this is the part that surprised her: she prototyped with gels, even pulled the beads out of a commercial gel pack and tested them in her own design, and found that plain water chilled just as long. Liability came third. She didn't want to be responsible for a child getting into a broken pack. The fourth reason is the one nobody would predict. She designed the whole system to clear TSA, because she flies to Europe, buys wine, and brings it home in cargo — and she didn't want to stand at a checkpoint answering questions about hazardous chemicals. When Forrest compliments the foresight, she gives it up easily: she used to be a flight attendant, and she heard those speeches every single day. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Victoria wrote a book about building a personal brand, and then people kept asking her the same follow-up question: fine, I built it — now what? That question became the sequel. Influence Unleashed taught the construction. Influence Activated teaches what you do once it's standing. Her diagnosis of where most people go wrong is uncomfortable and probably correct: they lead with credentials and industry and job titles, when the truth is people do business with people. She never takes a meeting cold. Prospective hire, new client, old client — she looks them up first, and she assumes they're doing the same to her. That's the whole argument in a sentence. Write your own narrative or accept the one strangers assemble for you. She's honest about using AI, honest about the filters, and firm that none of it works without something real underneath. And she has little patience for the quiet hope so many professionals live on: that doing excellent work will simply be noticed. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This part is where the numbers come out. Jeanine wanted twelve to fifteen hours of chill, driven by a specific need: she and her husband keep a second home in Albuquerque, the drive runs through desert heat, and she favors black vehicles, which is one more thing working against the wine in the back. What the finished product actually delivers exceeded her target — the twelve-pack holds for twenty-four hours and beyond, and she's tested it under a truck cover, deliberately engineering a heat trap, across the full twelve-hour run from Orange County to Albuquerque. The six-pack is the short-trip version: picnics, concerts, a day at the beach, six to eight hours as long as you keep it zipped. She also talks about what she had to let go. She wanted a collapsible bag for boats and RVs, and the engineering wouldn't support it — the design couldn't hold temperature. That's the moment, she says, where her stubbornness had to give way to someone who actually knew better. Then there's everyone else. Once word gets out that you're building something, people arrive with suggestions, and Jeanine's response to the two-pack and three-pack crowd is that she's already thought it through — the ice pack system doesn't earn its keep at that size, and plenty of simple bags already exist for a dinner out. Her real problem was never dinner. It was tasting rooms: buying six or nine or twelve bottles, then facing the next winery with nowhere to put them. Her husband wouldn't carry them in and wouldn't leave them in the car. What she needed, as she puts it, was a wine mule. He quit. The centerpiece is her conversation with Travis Rosbach, co-founder of Hydro Flask, who asked her the obvious business question: why rebuild the entire cooler instead of just selling the ice packs? Her answer is the thesis of the whole product. The cooler companies built for beer, and wine bottles are taller. Loose ice chills unevenly and can overchill a bottle, and soaking labels means losing them — which matters not only for knowing what you're drinking but for the artist whose work is on the bottle. Rosbach laughed and conceded the point @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Every product story has a stretch in the middle that nobody puts in the marketing copy, and this is Jeanine Lum's. Her first project manager had never had a drink in his life, which made explaining the value of what she was trying to protect a losing battle from the start. He took her concept, produced designs that failed, then redesigned and remolded without consulting her — and charged her for a new mold every single time. A year and several molds later, she was ready to quit. What she says next is the part that stops you. Twenty years in law enforcement, and she had never cried as much as she did during that first year of design work. She found a second manufacturer, and the difference was immediate: they didn't charge for redesigns, and their engineers apologized for not having reached her solutions first. Three mold revisions, billed once. Running alongside all of it was a patent process that went nearly as badly — the first attorney turned her away claiming a conflict of interest so fast she's certain he never opened her email, the second loved the product but couldn't hold to deadlines, and the third, who also doesn't drink, turned out to be the one who saw it. She now holds a design patent, a utility patent, and two registered trademarks. Then Forrest asks the question that gets to the heart of it, and Jeanine explains the interlocking ice pack system — a modular grid that freezes flat enough to fit an RV freezer, then slides together inside the bag, with pieces you can remove and reposition to make room for food and charcuterie. She designed it that way because she and her husband have lived with small refrigerators on a boat and in an RV, and because the coolers already on the market weren't built with wine in mind at all. Most of them, as she puts it, aren't even tall enough. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Jeanine Lum never set out to become an inventor. A W2 employee with no manufacturing background, she stumbled into her business idea the hard way, through a series of wine mishaps that most collectors will wince at. A bottle left in a car in Paso Robles pushed its own cork out from heat. A year later, a cardboard box holding roughly $1,400 worth of wine tipped over on a winding road trip. Those two moments sent her looking for a real solution, and she quickly discovered that nothing on the market actually protected the wine itself, only the bottle. What follows is a candid look at the long road from idea to finished product. Jeanine talks about working with a project manager who had never had a drop of wine in his life and struggled to understand what she was trying to protect, the costly cycle of redesigned molds, and the patent attorneys who came and went before she found the right partner. She eventually landed on an interlocking, modular ice pack system inspired by an ice pack she received in a box of chocolates, built specifically to accommodate the height of wine bottles, something she says most coolers on the market completely ignore. Forrest and Jeanine also dig into the practical side of the product, from the six-pack and twelve-pack ice systems and how long each holds its chill, to the zipper lube that keeps the airtight seal easy to manage, to why she intentionally avoided pre-filled gel packs in favor of simple water. Along the way, she shares a great story about a conversation with Hydro Flask's Travis Rosbach, who admitted his industry had missed the mark entirely on wine drinkers. It's a fun, honest conversation about persistence, unexpected mentors, and building something from a problem nobody else thought to solve. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Justin Ennis, Senior Director of Winemaking for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in Sonoma County, responsible for the Sonoma Coast wines under the Freestone brand — a role he's held for 20 years. Justin shares how he grew up surrounded by vineyards, with a wine-loving grandfather on one side and a family vineyard in Healdsburg's Russian River on the other, yet never considered wine a career until his stepfather (then at Kendall-Jackson's Hartford Court) suggested harvest intern work. His first vintage was 1995 under winemaker Dan Goldfield, doing the unglamorous cellar-rat work: power washing, punch downs, barrel cleaning. The revelation? Working alongside interns from Portugal, France, and Australia through the CAEP agricultural exchange visa program — and realizing winemaking could be his passport to the wider world. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. From a family bakery in Sicily to founding a non-alcoholic wine brand in Dallas, Anto's path to CLINQ ZERO runs through aerospace engineering, Fiat, agriculture, Tetra Pak, and five years selling winery equipment across North America. In this full conversation with Forrest, Anto shares the story behind the CLINQ ZERO name, the mixed reaction from friends and family back in Italy where wine tradition runs deep, and the process that sets the brand apart: starting from premium wine, dealcoholizing at ambient temperature, and skipping the sugar and artificial flavoring most competitors rely on to mask what's lost. The conversation also covers the bigger picture — alcohol consumption dropping globally, the opportunity that creates for non-alcoholic wine, and CLINQ ZERO's three-variety lineup of Sparkling Blanc, Sparkling Rosé, and Sparkling Red, available in both glass bottle and can. Anto closes with his five-year vision: CLINQ ZERO as the brand people keep in the fridge for weddings, baby showers, and pizza night, with founder pricing available now on pre-order ahead of late-summer delivery. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The rapid-fire rundown: Joe Phelps began his search for the perfect cool-climate site in the 90s. The two estate vineyards behind the vineyard-designate wines are Quarter Moon and Pastorale. Before this year's national release, the wines were only available winery direct or through the Phelps Preferred membership. The 2024 Pastorale Chardonnay carries an oceanic signature — Forrest's notes say saline breezes, Justin says salt air, and they call it close enough. That leads to the best moment of the episode: Justin admits even winemakers struggle with wine adjectives. His advice? If something creates thought provocation and you keep wanting to drink it, that's the clear-cut sign of quality. Skip the fluffy wine words. Make it accessible for everyone — which is exactly what The Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast is all about. More from the hot seat: Joseph Phelps joined the Moët Hennessy side of LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) in 2022 — the LV side is fashion and perfume, Moët Hennessy is wine and spirits. The two natural forces shaping the Freestone microclimate: the Pacific Ocean and the Petaluma Gap, funneling marine air and fog into Sonoma County. The tiny town of Freestone sits off a quiet highway heading toward Bodega Bay. Joseph Phelps farms roughly 500 acres across nine estate vineyards. The most accessible bottle in the lineup, the 2023 Freestone Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, comes in at $75. And the 2023 Quarter Moon Pinot? For lovers of savory texture, depth, and ageability. What does success actually look like five years into building a non-alcoholic wine brand? For Anto, founder of CLINQ ZERO, it's simple: becoming the bottle people keep in the fridge for weddings, baby showers, and pizza nights — and converting soda and beer drinkers to sparkling red along the way. In this final installment, Anto talks candidly about life after two decades in the corporate world, why he genuinely enjoys talking to strangers about the brand, and what separates CLINQ ZERO's ingredient list from competitors that compensate for lost flavor with sugar. He also shares the practical details: the Sparkling Blanc is available for pre-order now at CLINQ ZERO, with delivery expected late summer, and early supporters can lock in founder pricing — 30% off, the lowest price the brand will ever offer. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Why Pinot Noir? For Justin, it's the flavor and the challenge — a difficult grape to grow and a difficult wine to make, which makes a phenomenal vintage from Quarter Moon or Pastorale that much sweeter. He believes with every fiber of his body that Pinot Noir is one of the most food-friendly wines on the planet: it ages beautifully, but you can drink it young and still sense the quality. Having your cake and eating it too. Justin's advice for anyone just getting into wine: starting with a price point is fine, but don't stop there. Get out of your comfort zone and be willing to spend a little more — that's how you discover the full range of quality out there. He's watched friends do exactly that with Freestone wines, and the reaction is always the same: holy cow. Then the news — this year Freestone made its first small domestic release of the single-vineyard wines into the national market. The Pastorale Pinot Noir, Quarter Moon Pinot Noir, and Pastorale Chardonnay are now in 11 markets including New York, Chicago, and Florida (Miami, Orlando, Tampa) — roughly 500 cases each, pulled from the Phelps Preferred club allocation. Justin explains the direct-to-consumer double-edged sword: it's the most profitable route, but the greater world doesn't know you exist. Long-term growth means getting into top accounts and top restaurants — slowly and consistently. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Did you know San Pellegrino comes out of the ground already sparkling? Anto shares that detail in this CLINQ ZERO conversation, right before walking through the brand's full product lineup: Sparkling Blanc, Sparkling Rosé, and Sparkling Red, each offered in a traditional 750ml glass bottle and a 12-ounce can. The two also dig into why cans resonate with consumers who want portion control — no recorking, no spilling, just a controlled pour, hot or cold. Anto explains his bigger vision for the sparkling red as a potential alternative to soda or sparkling water, and reflects on what's been most satisfying about building in a growing category: the curiosity from consumers, and CLINQ ZERO's mission to bring transparency to a space where not every brand is being honest about what's really in the bottle. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Forrest asks the question wine lovers wonder in the store aisle: what's the story behind the price? Justin lays it out plainly. Freestone employs its own in-house vineyard staff of 12 to 15 people — with benefits, 401k match, retirement, vacation, and paid holidays. That's high-touch, high-detail farming, and it's part of every bottle's price. Lower-priced wines often farm vastly differently: farming for quantity, machine harvesting, contracted labor instead of in-house crews. Location matters too. The Sonoma Coast's proximity to the ocean means protecting the fruit can take dramatically more vineyard passes than warmer inland sites — Justin ballparks 35 sprays versus maybe 10 on the Napa Valley floor. Add barrel programs like 100% French oak, and the true cost of a bottle comes into focus. Then Forrest asks the emotional question: does it ever get old watching someone taste your wine for the first time? Never, says Justin. Memories are created over the wines his team makes — and humans have been fermenting and gathering around the table since we started walking the planet. A meal, an amazing bottle, and laughs: the communal ritual we should never lose. And his favorite from the lineup? No hesitation: "Pinot Noir is my amour." His deserted-island wine, through and through — with a deep love of Chardonnay right behind it. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What actually gets removed when you dealcoholize wine — and what gets left behind? In Part 3 of this CLINQ ZERO conversation, founder Anto explains how the distillation-based process specifically targets alcohol molecules, leaving natural compounds like resveratrol intact, without leaning on artificial wine flavoring to fake what's lost. He also covers the regulatory upside of going alcohol-free: no distributor required, no age-21 disclaimer, and a direct-to-consumer model that's opened the door for CLINQ ZERO to sell straight to customers in the U.S. Anto gets candid about the bigger picture too — alcohol consumption is dropping globally, and he sees non-alcoholic wine as both an opportunity for the wine industry and a chance to chip away at the stigma still attached to the category. The episode wraps with the thinking behind CLINQ ZERO's packaging: a glass bottle for celebratory, premium occasions, and a can built for tailgates, beaches, and anywhere glass isn't practical. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Forrest asks the question on everyone's mind: is AI finding its way into the vineyard? Justin embraces technology on the business side — presentations, emails, efficiency — and sees real potential in equipment applications like smarter sorting and earlier detection in the vineyard. But when it comes to handcrafting wine, he's protective. To Justin, AI is a recipe: put in the parameters, get a result. Wine's beauty lives in vintage variation, challenging seasons, and a little chaos. Strip out the creativity and you're making formulaic, boring wines. Then the conversation turns to Justin's minimalist, low-intervention style. His philosophy: high-detail, attentive farming delivers fruit so good the wines nearly make themselves. He picks for natural acid and alcohol balance and avoids additions when he can — not hands-off, not lazy, just letting the vintage and the site dictate quality instead of heavy-handed winemaking. One fascinating detail: the Pinot Noir ferments naturally on native yeast, but the Chardonnay gets inoculated — because every time he's let Chardonnay go wild, the fermentation got stuck. Adapting to what the circumstances give you, in action. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Why does a wine with no alcohol cost more to make, not less? In Part 2 of this CLINQ ZERO conversation, founder Anto walks Forrest through the real economics and technology behind the brand. The name itself carries meaning — "clink" for the universal, joyful sound of a toast, "zero" borrowed from the soda world's shorthand for "without." Anto shares how the idea landed with friends and family in Italy, where tradition runs deep and non-alcoholic wine was a hard sell, even to his own mother. He also details the process that separates CLINQ ZERO from other dealcoholized wines on the market: starting from premium wine, processing at ambient temperature with no heat damage to aroma or flavor, and avoiding the sugar and natural flavoring most competitors add back in to compensate. A touch of CO2 for the sparkle and a hint of grape juice to balance acidity — that's it. Real sparkling wine, gently dealcoholized. Not a shortcut, not a compromise. Justin breaks down what's actually in the glass — Pastorale Pinot Noir is fruit-forward and flashy with red cherry and strawberry notes and a long finish, while Quarter Moon, sitting closer to the ocean and the Petaluma Gap, leans Old World: spicier, darker, with bigger tannins and more structure. Thicker skins and smaller clusters mean a higher skin-to-juice ratio in the fermenter, and deeper color in the bottle. Same farming, same winemaking — the site does the talking. On Chardonnay, Justin makes what he calls "varietally correct" Chardonnay: high-acid, fruit-driven, fermented in large-format oak so the wood supports the wine without smothering it. No butter bombs here. Then Forrest asks the hard question: is there anything positive to take away from a decade of California wildfires? Justin is candid — nothing positive except the lessons. He recounts the 2017 Tubbs fire that shattered his sense of the industry's invincibility, and the 2020 LNU Lightning Complex fires that forced Freestone to abandon its entire harvest. Grapes breathe, smoke binds into the berry, and those burnt flavors can't be removed — so rather than compromise quality standards, they walked away from the vintage. And he throws no shade at winemakers who made a different call to keep their businesses afloat. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Most people who launch a non-alcoholic wine brand come at it from the wellness world, the beverage startup world, or the "I gave up drinking and couldn't find anything good" world. Anto Li Brizzi came at it from none of those places. He came at it from the winery floor. As head of North America for an Italian capital equipment company, Anto spent years selling the machinery that wineries use to make wine. He understood the production process, the industry dynamics, and the category from the inside out. When he saw the opportunity to build a better non-alcoholic sparkling wine — one that starts as real wine and is gently dealcoholized rather than constructed from juice, sugar, and flavoring — he had the knowledge and the credibility to do it right. In this first episode, Forrest traces Anto's full origin story: Growing up in Sicily in a family defined by bread, bakeries, and the rhythms of Italian outdoor life Studying aerospace engineering — bachelor's and master's degrees — before pivoting to the corporate world A career path that took him from Fiat to agriculture to Tetra Pak and eventually to a front-row seat in the wine industry The move to the US eleven years ago, becoming an American citizen, and making Dallas home while still traveling back to Italy multiple times a year And the founding insight behind CLINQ ZERO: real sparkling wine, gently dealcoholized — not grape juice with bubbles, not a drink rebuilt with additives, but something that starts exactly where great wine starts. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Justin Ennis explains that you can't talk about Napa Valley's red table wine history without talking about Joe Phelps, who founded Joseph Phelps Vineyards in 1973 after building a national construction company, Hensel Phelps, with his father's business out of Greeley, Colorado. Phelps released the first vintage of Insignia in 1974, Napa's first Bordeaux-style blend, and was also among the first to varietally label Syrah in California after Prohibition. Working alongside his first winemaker, German immigrant Walter Shug, Phelps experimented widely across varietals including Riesling, Johannesburg Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Syrah, tearing out plantings that didn't meet his standard and starting over until he found the quality he wanted. Justin connects this same relentless pursuit of excellence to the founding of Freestone Vineyards, born from Phelps' love of Burgundy wines and his desire to make a true Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in a cooler climate. That search led the Phelps team to the West Sonoma Coast, where they planted two estate vineyards, Pastoral at 60 acres and Quarter Moon at 40, totaling 100 acres roughly seven to eight miles from Bodega Bay and the Pacific Ocean, complete with a separate winemaking facility and staff dedicated entirely to the Freestone project. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Rusty Cellars is back behind the quiz desk, and this time the subject is the one guest who literally wrote the book on wine talk. Maryse Chevriere — certified sommelier, illustrator, and James Beard Award winner for the gloriously funny @FreshCutGardenHose — gets the full Pop the Quiz treatment as Rusty turns her interview series into two rounds of trivia and translation. Round one tests how closely you listened: her grape-stomping fall in Alsace, the humor award she won as an illustrator among writers, the Ian Cauble "fresh cut garden hose" line that named her brand, learning to drive at fifteen in Houston, and the all-Riesling wine list that gave her a big break in New York. Round two flips the glass and quizzes the language itself, busting the cork-sniffing ritual, decoding what legs really reveal, defending screw caps, and translating what "approachable" actually means when a sommelier says it with a smile. It's the perfect capper to the Maryse series and a 5-minute crash course in sounding wine smart without a single ounce of snobbery. Justin Ennis explains that his path into winemaking didn't run through a four-year degree program, but through 32 harvests of hands-on, ground-up learning that started at age 19 with the least glamorous jobs in the building: cleaning tanks, floors, drains, and barrels. From there, progression came step by step, learning to run the crush pad, organize the barrel room, and operate equipment like pumps, forklifts, and cranes before eventually taking on bigger responsibility. He stresses that interns benefit most from working at high-quality, technique-focused wineries rather than high-volume producers, since that's where the best habits get built. Justin describes winemaking as a true lifestyle career rather than a 9-to-5 job, comparing it to professional sports in terms of the all-in commitment it demands, since farming and winemaking run year-round with no real clocking out. He wraps up by walking through the cyclical rhythm of his year, from the relatively quiet stretch of leafing, shoot positioning, and crop estimating in the vineyard right now, to the upcoming July bottling and the harvest prep that follows, all while Mother Nature ultimately dictates the timeline. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Henry Santos of Premium Blend joins Forrest to talk about Raise a Glass for Colombia, the company's earthquake relief campaign. Premium Blend has deep roots in the Colombian community, and just two months before the earthquake they launched Brisa Ardiente, a wine-based Colombian aguardiente created with the community's support. Justin Ennis dives into the long tradition of international exchange programs in winemaking, where interns and foreign workers move between wineries to share techniques, equipment innovations, and processes that have developed differently across regions. He recalls starting in the cellar at eighteen years old, working alongside people from completely different countries, languages, and backgrounds, and how that experience opened his eyes to how much more there was to learn beyond what he'd seen at home. Justin challenges the assumption that American winemaking is automatically the best, pointing out that Old World regions like France have been refining their craft for centuries longer. He explains why harvest season, typically August through October, requires an expanded labor pool and round-the-clock monitoring of fermentations as fruit comes in at all hours. He also talks about why internships matter so much for young people entering the industry, giving them a low-stakes way to explore winemaking, vineyard work, hospitality, or sales before committing to one path, and how he now gets to pass that same mentorship forward at his own winery. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What does it take to build a 35-year-old spirits brand from scratch when nobody believes in your product, you have no industry experience, and a liquor license costs seven figures in your market? Ask Gino Santos. Premium Blend Cocktails for one of the most wide-ranging, personal, and genuinely fascinating guest conversations in TB5MWP history. The Business Concept Premium Blend produces wine-based spirits that are legally classified as wine — meaning any venue holding a basic beer and wine license (as low as $400 in Florida) can serve them. No six-figure liquor license required. The products are formulated to taste like the spirits they replicate: tequila, rum, vodka, mezcal, and more — and when mixed into cocktails, they're virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. The Product Line The flagship Agave Wine Collection is made from 100% blue agave sourced in Jalisco, Mexico — the same region as the world's finest tequilas — and includes Tequesta, Ginete (blanco-style), Guitarron, Guitarron Classico (reposado-style), Zapotec (mezcal-style), and El Guitarron Cristalino. At 48 proof, the line has evolved from a cocktail mixer into a sipping spirit in its own right. Additional products include Rumbero (rum-style), Clear Red (vodka-style), Santos Sangria (100% Spanish origin, grandmother's family recipe), Failing Irish Cream (produced in Ireland), and Cafe Luna coffee liqueur. A new Aguardiente (Colombian-style spirit) is also in the pipeline. The Origin Story Gino and his brother Henry were born in Cuba. Their father Orestes — a celebrated Cuban singer-songwriter — was anti-Castro, thrown in jail, and eventually escaped with his family on a shrimp boat stolen by an uncle. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued them mid-ocean as the boat was sinking, bringing them ashore in Key West to sandwiches and cold milk. From Newark to Miami, through Stetson University and an MBA from the University of Miami, Gino ended up on the road selling Oscar Mayer products when he spotted a wine-based spirit that no one was marketing correctly. He and Henry saw the gap and built Premium Blend to fill it. The Pitch and the Hustle The early years meant self-distribution across Florida in plastic bottles (glass breaks; plastic doesn't), cold-calling venues with no distributor support, and doing trade show samplings to get skeptical buyers to try the product. The sales pitch Gino still stands behind: Premium Blend increases your margins, improves customer retention, and makes your wait staff more money — all without a liquor license. Blind taste tests against actual rum and tequila have been closing deals ever since. The Legacy Gino closes the series reflecting on his late father Orestes, who told his sons when they arrived in America: "We didn't come here to take, we came here to give." Premium Blend now employs a team, operates in multiple states, and has helped countless small restaurants stay in business on the strength of their cocktail margins alone. 📞 Premium Blend toll-free: 800-899-0331 🌐 premiumblend.com @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Justin Ennis, senior director of winemaking for Joseph Phelps Vineyards and the steward of its Freestone brand along the Sonoma Coast, where he's spent the last twenty years shaping the wines. Justin grew up surrounded by wine without ever planning to make a career of it — his grandfather kept a full table, and his mother's family in Healdsburg tended an old field-planted vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley. It wasn't until his stepfather, who worked facilities at what's now Hartford Family Winery, nudged him toward a harvest internship that everything changed. Justin signed on as cellar help for his first vintage in 1995 under winemaker Dan Goldfield, expecting little more than hard, unglamorous labor: power washing, barrel cleaning, and punch-downs. What he found instead reshaped his entire worldview. That first harvest, he worked alongside cellar hands from Portugal, France, and Australia, brought to the United States through agricultural exchange visa programs like CAEP. For a young guy from what he calls an "insular" Sonoma County, the camaraderie and global perspective of harvest work opened a door he hadn't known existed — one that would eventually take him as far as New Zealand using that same visa program. Justin reflects on falling into winemaking purely by chance, simply applying for a job that needed warm bodies, and discovering a calling he never set out to find. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Maryse Chevriere's illustrations — a little figure she simply calls "my little dude." He's intentionally universal, someone anyone can see themselves in, though she'll add a ponytail, a bow tie, or a mustache when a drawing calls for it. Forrest zeroes in on a favorite: a "greets you with… but hits you in the face" illustration featuring the character at a microphone under a spotlight, arms up as if shielding himself. Maryse explains the improv-style thinking behind it — "greets you with" is the chill, gentle version of describing a wine's notes, while "hits you in the face" is the version where lemon, lime, and green bell pepper smack you so hard you can't miss it. The whole thing is built around a punchy Sauvignon Blanc (or, in Forrest's Boston translation, a "Savvy B"). Then the practical heart of the episode: who is the book for? Maryse describes it as ideal for newer wine appreciators looking to level up, or anyone who wants a fun, flip-through companion for a glass of wine — originally imagined as a coffee-table book. It's rich with 101-level information, but polished enough that professionals will recognize their own wine-speak and chuckle. Above all, it's a wine book that doesn't feel like a textbook, and a great gift for anyone who loves wine. Maryse takes the open mic to acknowledge the people behind the book: her mom, aunt, and in-laws (who bought and promoted copies), her publishers who finally saw a vision she'd carried for years, her friends Annie, Jess, and Laura, and especially her husband, who held her together while she wrote and illustrated the book through her pregnancy. There's a warm, funny riff about family members enthusiastically promoting her at local wine shops — her mom being the biggest cheerleader of all — and even getting her book and drawings into a charity silent auction. She closes with where to find everything: Instagram at Freshcutgardenhose, prints and custom work at fcghstudio.com, and the book at Amazon, local bookshops, and Barnes & Noble — or search "How to Sound Wine Smart" at SimonandSchuster.com for every retailer. Every great business has a moment when the founder walks into a stranger's establishment and has to sell the dream from scratch. In this final installment of the Premium Blend series, Forrest gets the full story: Why Premium Blend launched in plastic bottles — a practical shipping decision when you're self-distributing across Florida with almost no capital Why plastic has actually become a selling point for bars and restaurants where dropped bottles are a real cost The three-part sales pitch Gino used to walk cold into venues: higher profit margins, increased customer retention, and bigger tips for waitstaff How Premium Blend sales presentations work — Henry and Gino would show up with bags of product like they were moving in, letting everyone taste everything Blind taste tests against actual rum, tequila, and more — and why the cocktails are indistinguishable Pricing breakdown: roughly $8–$10 per liter depending on state alcohol tax The philosophy behind the business: owning a company, not just having a job A moving tribute to their late father, Orestes Santos — the Cuban musician who said "we didn't come here to take, we came here to give" — and what he would think seeing his sons build something that employs people and sustains small businesses across the country Learn more at premiumblend.com @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The series wraps by going back to the beginning. Maryse Chevriere opens with the closure debate and dismantles an old-school myth: you absolutely can have great wine under a screwcap — some of the world's best Rieslings are sealed that way. She gets the confusion, since screwcaps are also a cheaper closure found on inexpensive bottles, but her position is simple: if the wine is good, she doesn't care how it's sealed. Corkscrews have more flair, sure, and she offers a pro tip on the trickier wax-topped bottles — drive the corkscrew straight in rather than trying to peel all the wax off first. Then a quiz question with real teaching value: when an expert calls a wine "approachable," they mean it's easy to drink and enjoyable right now — friendly, no curveballs. Not a polite way of saying cheap, though your greatest Barolo, Bordeaux, or Champagne probably isn't "approachable" in the same way. Think Tuesday-night wine rather than Friday date-night bottle. Maryse also shares the human side: the close-minded customer she'd love to secretly test with a box wine, her genuine modesty about calling herself an illustrator ("I like to draw... it was a hobby"), and the James Beard Award she won in the humor category for the media awards — standing out as an illustrator among writers. The payoff is the full-circle reveal. Forrest plays a mystery voice, and Maryse immediately identifies Master Sommelier Ian Cauble. It turns out her whole project traces back to him. While studying for her certified sommelier exam and clicking around Instagram, she was struck by how visually evocative — and delightfully silly — wine language can be. Coming to wine a little later herself and not always feeling like she fit in with the somm crowd, she found her own way to contribute. And Ian's iconic line — that a wine tastes like fresh cut garden hose — was so perfect it named the whole thing. A fitting finale for the Wine-Curious: proof that the most memorable wine language comes from having fun with it. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What started as a workaround for the cocktail licensing gap has evolved into something much bigger. Premium Blend's Agave Wine Collection isn't just a tequila substitute anymore — California restaurants are doing bottle service with it, customers are taking shots, and people are drinking it straight because at 48 proof, it's smoother with none of the burn. In this episode, Gino Santos walks Forrest through: The philosophy behind product development — Gino won't sell something he doesn't believe in himself The full Agave Wine Collection lineup: Tequesta and Ginete (blanco-style), Guitarron (reposado-style), Guitarron Classico, Zapotec (mezcal-style), and El Guitarron Cristalino Why the products are made from 100% blue agave sourced in Jalisco, Mexico — the same region as the world's finest tequilas The evolution from masking the product in cocktails to serving it straight — and why that shift matters How "wine snobs" remain a persistent challenge, and why the term "wine-based liquor" is a deliberate positioning decision What Gino's day actually looks like as president: strategic, legal, and financial vision — thinking about next year, not today A telling detail: Forrest signed up on the Premium Blend website and had samples at his door within 24 hours The product has come a long way since the trade show days of convincing skeptics one sip at a time. Maryse Chevriere a five-question, multiple-choice wine quiz, and her answers double as a myth-busting crash course. Why do sommeliers have you taste before pouring the full glass? To check whether the wine is corked or flawed — and, honestly, to catch whether you simply don't like it. Maryse would rather figure that out early, pour the bottle by the glass, and steer you toward something you'll love than watch you pay for a bottle you'll never finish. And that returned bottle needn't go to waste: if it isn't faulty, let the staff taste it so they can sell it by the glass as a special. Everybody wins. "Good legs"? It's about sugar and alcohol content — not quality, not price, and definitely not a Boston Marathon qualifying time. Maryse calls it a phrase you don't really need anymore, though it opens a lovely tangent about her dad, an old-school wine lover whose family hailed from Bordeaux and who was sure those were simply the best wines there were. As she learned the subject herself, she realized his confidence came from a narrow lens — but he enjoyed wine and had a good time, and sometimes that's its own kind of bliss. Why swirl? To release the aromas — the contact with air wakes the wine up. She half-loves Forrest's alternate theory that you're summoning the flavor gods. On tasting technique, she suggests drawing in a little air like sipping through a mini cocktail straw (no gargling required) and letting the wine touch all points of your palate, since you taste different things in different places — without getting too fancy about it. And sniffing the cork? Mostly theater. A cork smells like cork. If you want to know whether a wine is tainted, smell the wine in the glass, not the stopper — a lesson she picked up early in her training. For the Wine-Curious listener, it's five minutes of permission to stop being intimidated by the rituals — and to understand what's worth doing and what's just for show. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sandwiches and cold milk. That's what greeted a five-year-old Gino Santos when the U.S. Coast Guard pulled his family off a sinking shrimp boat and brought them ashore in Key West. For a kid who had just spent the crossing crammed into a shrimp hold with his grandmother, it was heaven. That same resilience and hunger would define Gino's path decades later when he and his brother Henry built Premium Blend Cocktails from nothing. In this episode, Gino walks Forrest through: The harrowing details of the family's escape from Cuba — a stolen shrimp boat, Soviet-era communism, a Bay of Pigs connection, and a Coast Guard rescue His academic path through Stetson University and an MBA from the University of Miami How a sales job with Oscar Mayer led him to discover a wine-based spirit product that nobody was marketing correctly The origin of the Premium Blend partnership with his brother Henry, who was running a Colombian mining equipment company in Miami at the time The critical role of Florida Distillers and a mentor named Chris Mitchell, who took a chance on two unknown entrepreneurs with no industry experience Why education was Premium Blend's biggest early challenge — and how "getting the liquid to the lips" at trade shows and samplings changed everything The wine-based cocktail space has exploded since the 90s, and Premium Blend was there at the beginning — grinding through skepticism one margarita at a time. The best way to learn wine, Maryse Chevriere argues, isn't to read about it — it's to pour two glasses and taste the difference. In this episode she walks Forrest through the drinking games tucked into How to Sound Wine Smart, designed to make abstract concepts click through direct comparison. Think a wine you assumed was sweet suddenly revealing itself as dry when set beside an actually sweet one, a shy grape next to an aromatic Gewürztraminer, or one bottle tasted at first sip, again at thirty minutes, and again at two hours to feel what time and air really do. There are no winners, no losers, and no test — just an experience built to make the lesson stick and get people genuinely excited to drink wine. Maryse also pulls back the curtain on making the book. Illustrating it took five or six months — most of them while she was pregnant — and proved trickier than expected. On Instagram, funny tasting notes hand her ready-made visual ideas; for the book she deliberately chose the generic, professional terms people actually use, which meant figuring out how to paint something as abstract as "rustic," "silky," or "leathery." Writing was its own slow burn, since she's a self-described fiddler who can't move on until a line sounds exactly right. Asked for her home run, she points to the "character" chapter. Instead of the technical checklist of fruits, non-fruits, and "medium-plus" this-and-that she was trained in, she gives readers something more relatable: a wine that's friendly, that's giving golden retriever energy. It's a warmer, more human way in. Forrest names the throughline — she's not dumbing wine down, she's making something genuinely complex feel approachable. This isn't soda off an assembly line; it's the product of an enormous amount of craft, and she wants more people to feel welcome to it. Maryse agrees, wondering aloud why wine intimidates people in a way that describing a restaurant dish or a piece of art simply doesn't. The stigma, she says, is what wine has had to work hardest to overcome — and helping people get past it is the whole point. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ever wonder why your favorite neighborhood restaurant doesn't serve cocktails? Chances are it comes down to one thing: the liquor license. In many states, a full liquor license can run well into six or seven figures on the open market — making it virtually impossible for small and mid-sized venues to offer a full bar program. That's exactly the problem Gino Santos and his brother Henry set out to solve with Premium Blend Cocktails. Their wine-based spirits are legally classified as wine — meaning any venue with a basic beer and wine license (which in Florida costs around $400) can serve them. The result? Cocktail-style drinks, no liquor license required. In this episode, Gino explains: Why liquor licenses are so expensive and hard to obtain How Premium Blend products are formulated to qualify legally as wine The difference between a liquor license and a beer-and-wine license — and why it matters for thousands of venues How his family escaped Cuba thanks to an uncle who literally stole a boat Growing up bilingual in Newark and Miami with a famous Cuban singer-songwriter father @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Some people are trained into wine. Maryse Chevriere talked her way in on pure enthusiasm — and it turned out to be the perfect qualification. In this episode she tells Forrest Kelly how a manager went to bat for her despite her being "green," echoing the philosophy her chef husband lives by: give him someone hungry to learn over someone he'd have to un-train. From there, Maryse walks through the pivot that shaped her path — leaving New York not because she'd outgrown the wine bar, but because she was ready for a new experience and drawn to the easy access to wine country that San Francisco offered. She admits she wasn't overthinking the cross-country move in her late 20s, which she figures is exactly the right way to make big decisions: try it, and change course if it doesn't work. The conversation lingers on a standout wine-country memory — a Napa producer pouring an unexpectedly aromatic Grignolino, a grape you rarely see, that felt gloriously out of type for the region — though her heart belongs to cooler-climate Sonoma Pinot. Then Forrest turns to the main event: How to Sound Wine Smart. Maryse explains how her Instagram account revealed that wine's real barrier isn't the wine — it's the language. People freeze at the shop or restaurant, unsure what they're being sold, and just nod along. Most wine books bury terminology in a tiny glossary at the back; she wanted to flip that, building a fun, visual, genuinely useful resource that reads like a friend talking over a glass rather than a textbook. Forrest praises the book's approachable breakdowns — like how to actually taste a glass of wine — and Maryse sums up her whole mission in a sentence: make it easy to digest, and make it sound human. For the Wine-Curious listener, this one's a permission slip: you don't need to be trained, and you don't need to fake it. You just need the right words. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Grab your scorecard, wine lovers — Rusty Cellars is popping the quiz on one of the most fascinating guests in show history. Chef Chuck Hayworth spent 35 years in professional kitchens before a rare stomach cancer diagnosis changed everything, launching a private chef career that began when fellow patients in his therapy group asked him to cook for them. In this two-round, ten-question challenge, Rusty tests your memory on Chuck's go-to Niçoise salad dressed with cold-pressed Georgia olive oil, his resort chef tasting menu based in Boone, North Carolina at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the brilliant pairing of a Yadkin Valley orange wine from Hanover Park with slow-braised short ribs. You'll also revisit his four-cheat-days-a-month philosophy of sustainable healthy eating, his 2014 book The Chef's Recovery, his observations on entire generations opting out of alcohol after Covid, and his last-meal-on-earth answer: a margherita pizza and his finest bottle of French wine, shared with the people he loves. Plus a bonus question about uncrustables that had to be heard to be believed. Maryse Chevriere's wine story doesn't follow a straight line — and that's exactly what makes it worth hearing. In this first installment, the author of How to Sound Wine Smart (out now from Simon Element) tells Forrest how a food-website waiter with an affinity for drinks talked her way into the wine world. Maryse opens up about her three months working the harvest at a Domaine in Alsace — no real paycheck, but all the wine she could drink and a hands-on crash course she calls the best "fall camp" of her life. From literally stomping grapes to learning alongside fans, pros, and travelers from around the world, it cemented her identity as a hands-on, visual learner. Then there's Terroir Wine Bar in New York City, where owner Paul Greco took a chance on her. With around 50 wines by the glass — every white a Riesling — Terroir taught Maryse the art of the confident pivot: you want a Chardonnay? Here's a Riesling that fits the bill. More importantly, it taught her how to talk about wine in a way that's fun, not snobby — the philosophy that now defines her work and her new book. Also in this episode: surviving life with a 10-month-old until that first evening glass, why there's zero shame in a Trader Joe's bottle, and why getting paid in wine is a very real industry tradition. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Before "Don't Stop Believin'" filled stadiums, it lived in a notebook. Jonathan Cain was out of money and out of hope when he called his father from a Los Angeles payphone and asked if he should give up. The advice he got back sat in that notebook for a year — until Cain joined Journey and the band needed one more track for their album Escape. In this episode, we break down how Steve Perry turned a father's encouragement into a masterpiece: why he chose "South Detroit," a place that doesn't exist, purely because it sang better; how the song shattered songwriting convention by holding its chorus until the final 50 seconds; and how the band captured the instrumental live in a single take at Fantasy Studios. From the Sopranos finale to the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress, this is the story behind the anthem that refused to fade — told in five minutes, no filler. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Chef Chuck Hayworth wraps up this conversation by getting personal about why he does what he does — sharing the joy of medical meals and longevity cuisine with people who need it most. He leans into the old Southern saying "you are what you eat," explaining how it shapes every pairing and every plate he creates. He talks about how North Carolina's seasonal diversity, from spring berries to farmers market produce, keeps his menus constantly evolving throughout the year. Then comes the fun part: the classic last-meal-on-Earth question. Chuck doesn't hesitate, picturing a margarita pizza fresh out of the oven, shared with family and his closest people, paired with the nicest bottle of French wine in his collection, all while watching a comet streak across the sky. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Laurie Forster has always used humor to disarm people — it's a skill she traces all the way back to growing up in New Jersey, where you learn fast that a sharp wit is your best defense. On this episode of The Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast, Laurie shares how that instinct, combined with a supply chain degree from Penn State, a high-stakes career in Fortune 100 tech sales, and a terrifying night performing stand-up comedy at the DC Improv, quietly assembled everything she needed to become The Wine Coach. Her one-woman show, Something to Whine About, is unlike anything else in wine education. Audiences arrive to find a flight of wines waiting at their seats and leave having competed in the Cork Dork Challenge, earned their drinking names, and watched a self-proclaimed wine snob get gently humbled by Laurie's blind smell test. The show has played Caesars Atlantic City, Caroline's on Broadway, and the HBO Women in Comedy Festival, where Laurie took over a Boston theater and ran a live wine tasting during intermission. Off stage, Laurie hosts The Sipping Point, a weekly podcast featuring chefs, winemakers, and culinary personalities. She leads international wine tours to destinations including Bordeaux and Tuscany, and her free Wine Coach app (available on iPhone and Android) puts her wine picks, podcast, and Q&A access in one place. Wine tastings at rodeos. The Hank Williams Museum. A first sip of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill at the drive-in. In the final part of her conversation, Laurie Forster wraps up one of the most entertaining and wide-ranging wine conversations the show has ever hosted — and she saves some of the best material for last. Laurie's corporate tasting work has brought her to venues she never put on her bucket list and wouldn't trade for anything. Through all of it, her mission has never wavered: help people think different and drink different by trusting their own taste rather than deferring to wine culture's unwritten rulebook. While she's tasted bottles most wine lovers only dream about — Château Pétrus, Barolo, aged Sauternes — what genuinely excites her most is tracking down a killer wine under $25 and sharing it with an audience who didn't know it existed. In 1980, Jonathan Cain stood at a payphone on Sunset Boulevard, broke and ready to quit music for good. His father's answer became the seed of the biggest sing-along anthem in rock history. In this Back Label Story, Forrest Kelly traces how that phrase aged in a notebook for a year before Cain joined Journey and the band built "Don't Stop Believin'" around it for the Escape album. Along the way, you'll hear how Steve Perry wrote like a sommelier — capturing a smoky bar room not by how it looked, but by how it smelled, that heavy swirl of wine and cheap perfume — and why he invented South Detroit, a place that doesn't exist, simply because it sang better. Forrest breaks down the song's rule-shattering structure, with a chorus that doesn't arrive until the final 50 seconds, and the legendary session at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley where the band captured the instrumental live in a single take. From the unforgettable cut-to-black of The Sopranos finale to becoming the best-selling digital rock song of the 20th century and its 2022 preservation in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, this is the full pour behind an anthem that refused to let the glass run dry. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Before Laurie Forster became The Wine Coach, she was a Penn State supply chain graduate selling multimillion-dollar inventory planning systems to Fortune 100 executives — and getting quietly humiliated every time a wine list landed on the table. In Part 2 of her conversation, Laurie traces the full arc from corporate boardrooms to Australian vineyards, sharing the chain of decisions that led her to walk away from a six-figure tech career and never look back. Along the way she reveals how a cooking class became a life-changing moment — not just because it deepened her love of wine and food pairing, but because it introduced her to Chef Michael, now her husband, whose New York-New Jersey wit matched hers from the first sarcastic exchange across a kitchen counter. After a three-month sabbatical in Australia exploring wineries and reimagining her future, Laurie was handed a severance package and given the greatest gift of all: no reason to return. Building a tasting menu isn't a weekend project. For Chef Chuck Hayworth of theresortchef.com, the spring menu alone took nearly a year to develop — tasting over a dozen Chardonnays and half a dozen Sauvignon Blancs from across North Carolina before locking in every pairing. Every wine on the menu comes from within 60 to 75 miles of his home base in Boone, the kind of farm-to-table commitment most restaurants only talk about. The spring menu features courses like asparagus, lemon seared trout, spring chicken with ancient grains, goat cheese, and a lemon olive oil cake for dessert — each paired with wines from the region, including a Linville dry white. And the summer menu, coming the second or third week of June, brings in heirloom tomatoes, mountain berries, and a whole new slate of North Carolina pairings. But the episode highlight might be Chef Chuck's search for the perfect wine to accompany a 5-to-7-hour braised short rib. His answer: orange wine from Hanover Park in the Yadkin Valley — one of the first producers of orange wine in North Carolina, crafting French varietals with a spicy back-palate finish that bridges the world between red and white. It's the pairing nobody expected, and it works. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Laurie Forster — The Wine Coach — has built her career on a simple but powerful conviction: wine should be fun, accessible, and completely free of snobbery. In Part 1 of her conversation with Forrest Kelly on The Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast, Laurie shares the full arc of her journey, from jug wine in New Jersey to certified sommelier, from corporate software sales to comedy stages, and from formal wine education to creating a one-woman show called Something to Whine About. Chef Chuck Hayworth has spent 26 years doing battle with the American food supply — and his clients keep getting younger. Chef Chuck opens up about his own cancer survivorship, why a diabetes diagnosis is the beginning of a health journey rather than the end of one, and how he brings entire families along on the medical meals process to make lasting change sustainable for everyone at the table. He also weighs in on the seismic shift reshaping the restaurant industry: whole generations of adults opting out of alcohol entirely, pushing beverage programs toward craft kombuchas, mocktails, and low-fermentation options. And yes, he still programs in four cheat days a month — because real life deserves a cheat sheet. Then things get seriously delicious. Chef Chuck walks through his Resort Chef tasting menu, rooted in Boone, North Carolina, where Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountain culinary traditions run hundreds of years deep. The menu pairs hyper-seasonal local ingredients with wines from the Yadkin Valley — one of the most undersung wine regions in the country, growing nearly every domestic grape variety you can name. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In 1978, Robert Parker launched a free wine newsletter out of Baltimore with no industry connections and no advertising, building his reputation on a simple 50-to-100 point scoring scale borrowed from the American school grading system. That simple idea ended up reshaping how the entire world drinks wine, giving one man's palate enough influence to swing a bottle's price by millions and turn a 100-point score into an instant trophy. As Bordeaux winemakers began adjusting their wines to chase that score, critics coined the term Parkerization to describe a global drift toward riper, higher-alcohol, more fruit-forward styles. British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson saw the danger in that kind of concentrated influence and spoke out as early as the late 1980s, warning that one critic and one scale shouldn't control the international fine wine market. She built her own 20-point system as a quieter, more old-world alternative, setting up a decades-long debate over whether wine should be judged like a science experiment or experienced like a story. Parker retired in 2019 and The Wine Advocate eventually landed with Michelin, but his 100-point system is still stamped on wine shelves across America today, alongside the resistance to it that never fully went away. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Chef Chuck Hayworth of RealMedicalMeals.com doesn't just cook — he heals. What would it take to completely relearn how to taste food and wine? For Chef Chuck Hayworth — the Thankfully Local private chef and resort chef based in North Carolina — the answer was a rare stomach cancer diagnosis that changed everything 26 years ago. In Part 1 of this conversation, Forrest and Chef Chuck dig into the origin story: how a chef already 35 years into kitchen life had to go back to basics — sweet, salty, bitter, umami — and rebuild his relationship with food and beverage entirely. Along the way, he discovered the anti-inflammatory benefits of wine, the power of slow dining, and a philosophy of eating that now shapes everything he does for his clients. Chef Chuck works with two very different types of clients. The first: people who've been medically ordered to change their diet and don't know where to start. The second: the longevity client — the wellness-minded person who's already doing the work and wants to do it even better, well into their senior years. His approach covers everything from health-focused snack alternatives to intentional food-and-wine pairings for private events. If you've ever wondered how a serious health crisis can flip into a life-defining purpose — and what it really means to dine instead of just eat — this is the episode to pour a glass for. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The front label said Robert Mondavi, the man who put Napa Valley on the map. The back label said a fistfight over a mink coat, a decade of lawsuits, and two brothers who didn't speak for years. In 1965, Robert and Peter Mondavi came to blows at Charles Krug Winery, the family business their father Cesare had bought in 1943. The fallout sent Robert into a six-month leave and eventually out of the company entirely — but instead of fading away, he founded the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville in 1966, pioneered cold fermentation, renamed Sauvignon Blanc to Fumé Blanc, and partnered with Baron Philippe de Rothschild to create Opus One. Peter, meanwhile, spent the next fifty years quietly building Charles Krug's legacy without ever chasing the spotlight. The two brothers didn't speak for years. Then, in 2005, nearly thirty years after the fight, they made one barrel of wine together — Ancora Una Volta, "once again" — selling at the Napa Valley Wine Auction for $400,000. Ten questions, two rounds, and a whole lot of uncomfortable truths about why you pay what you pay. Rusty Cellars hosts this Pop the Quiz episode pulled from Claire Wang's appearance on the show, covering everything from MRI brain scans proving price changes the actual experience of taste, to why a $5 wine beat a $45 wine in blind taste tests, to the single sentence a Chateau Pichon Baron director used to explain his entire pricing philosophy. Round two gets sharper with a true/false/both format testing anchoring effects, charm pricing, and whether higher price really does mean higher quality (spoiler: it's complicated). Claire Wang is a pricing strategist with 20 years in the field and author of the upcoming book The Price of Influence, out this September. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What does a pricing strategist know about wine? More than you'd think. Claire Wang joins Forrest Kelly to break down the psychology behind why we pay what we pay — and why our brains are doing a lot more work than we realize every time we reach for a bottle. Claire unpacks the famous Stanford and Caltech MRI study that proved people's brains literally experience more pleasure when they think they're drinking expensive wine — even when the wine is identical. She introduces the concept of the "magic number of 99" and explains why premium wineries deliberately avoid it, opting for clean price points like $18 or $19 to signal quality rather than bargain. The conversation takes a sharp turn at Château Pichon Baron in Bordeaux, where managing director Christian Seeley shared his pricing philosophy in a single sentence: "I charge the highest price my regular customers will enthusiastically buy." Claire calls it a perfect summary of everything pricing strategy is built on. The episode closes with a fast and sharp True or False round on the psychology of pricing — and Claire goes undefeated. Her book The Price of Influence: How to Move Anyone to a Yes drops in September, 2026. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The front label said Award of Excellence. The back label said $250 and a voicemail box. In 2008, writer and researcher Robin Goldstein invented a restaurant from scratch — complete with a website, a Milan phone number, and a reserve wine list built almost entirely from Wine Spectator's own lowest-rated Italian wines — to test how seriously the magazine vetted its restaurant wine award. The fictional Osteria L'Intrepido won anyway. Goldstein went public at a wine economists' conference, the story hit the New York Times, the LA Times, and CBS, and Wine Spectator called it a hoax. But one detail stuck: when the magazine called to deliver the good news, they also asked about buying an ad. This episode tells the full story of the scandal that made the wine world question what its most trusted award badge actually means. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What does a bullfrog have to do with Barolo? More than you'd think. In this Wine Wednesday Back Label Story, Forrest Kelly uncorks the surprisingly rich wine philosophy hidden inside Hoyt Axton's 1971 classic — the song Three Dog Night rode to six weeks at number one. The line that stuck? "He always had some mighty fine wine." No credentials required. No auction catalog. Just the stubborn, booming joy of a bottle that moves you. Forrest traces why the best wine experiences have nothing to do with complexity — a chilled Vermentino under a warm lamp, a $14 jammy Zinfandel that tastes like a better life, a misunderstood Lambrusco poured into a juice glass in someone's kitchen. Jeremiah the bullfrog never explained himself. Neither does a great Barolo. This episode is a quiet manifesto for every wine lover who's ever stopped performing appreciation and just… drank. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Claire Wang was in Bordeaux for a business trip when she visited Château Pichon Baron, part of the AXA Millésimes portfolio — one of the world's largest insurance companies, which also happens to own a remarkable collection of wineries across Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Portugal. She sat down with managing director Christian Seely and asked him point blank: how do you price your wine? His answer stopped her cold. "I will charge the highest price my regular customers will enthusiastically buy." That one sentence, Claire says, captures everything she's spent 20 years teaching businesses about pricing. It's not about what you think your product is worth. It's about knowing your customer so well that the price feels inevitable to them — even exciting. In Part 2, Claire and Forrest dig into: Why the world's top Bordeaux châteaux are doubling down on wine tourism — and what that says about what customers actually want to buy Why story is now a winery's most valuable asset — especially in a crowded market where being "just another producer" is a death sentence The experience economy and how it's reshaping wine pricing from Bordeaux to California Claire's personal wine picks — all under $50, including a summer red from Sicilian producer Occhipinti that she says is best served slightly chilled @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ever wonder why a $18.99 bottle feels like a deal but $19 feels like a splurge? There's a reason for that — and it's not an accident. Claire Wang is a pricing strategist with two decades of experience helping major brands put the right number on everything from phone plans to foreign exchange rates. She's also the author of an upcoming book, The Price of Influence: How to Move Anyone to a Yes. In Part 1, Claire breaks down: Why pricing isn't manipulation — it starts with understanding what customers truly value The "magic number of 99" and when wineries should use it — and when they absolutely shouldn't How quality wines intentionally signal premium by dropping the .99 Why when you buy a bottle of wine, you're not just buying the liquid — you're buying an experience How a winery's target customer determines everything about how their wine should be priced and positioned @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ernest and Julio Gallo founded E. & J. Gallo Winery in Modesto, California in the fall of 1933, just after the repeal of Prohibition. Their starting capital was less than $6,000 — $5,000 of it borrowed from Ernest's mother-in-law, Teresa Franzia. Their winemaking education came from pre-Prohibition pamphlets retrieved from the basement of the Modesto Public Library. With a single tractor running back-to-back 12-hour shifts, they produced 177,000 gallons in their first year. What the front label doesn't show: Ernest and Julio's parents died in 1933, the same year the winery was founded. Their father shot their mother, then turned the gun on himself. Ernest was 24. He never spoke about it publicly. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sherman Mohr has spent years placing brand ambassadors for spirits and wine companies — and the data kept pointing to the same thing: the best ones were over 50. That pattern sparked a new venture called Over 50 Pros (over50pros.com), a platform dedicated to helping people in that demographic understand that their experience has real market value — they just need a new narrative for delivering it. Sherman notes that roughly 35% of all gig work in the U.S. is currently performed by workers over 50, many of whom are doing it for reasons that go beyond a paycheck — engagement, community, mental sharpness, and yes, fun. He calls them the most mentally healthy people he knows. The wine and spirits industry itself gets a vote of confidence too: Sherman describes it as relatively recession-resilient, a good sign for anyone considering it as a career lane. David Lett didn't discover the Willamette Valley — he invented it as wine country. When he arrived in 1965, Oregon was timber and berries. Nobody was planting Pinot Noir there. Nobody serious, anyway. Lett and his wife Diana set up in the Dundee Hills and did it anyway, with no roadmap, no guarantee, and no backup plan. For years they were written off. The market wasn't interested in Oregon wine. If it wasn't French or Californian, it didn't matter. But in 1979, Lett entered his 1975 Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir in the Wine Olympiad in Paris — and when the results came in, his wine ranked among the best in the world. Just like that, a region nobody respected demanded a second look. What Lett built in the Dundee Hills didn't just put Oregon on the map — it rewrote the map entirely. Today, the Willamette Valley is one of the most respected Pinot Noir regions on the planet. All because one man decided the biggest risk wasn't failure. It was listening to people who thought they already knew everything. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Maba Ba — founder of Flying Whale Wine, based in New York; originally from Dakar, Senegal; serial entrepreneur, filmmaker, WNBA enthusiast. The Flying Whale name is rooted in the Dogon people of West Africa, whose ancient cosmology centered on the Sirius star system — they believed an amphibian being called the Nommo flew to Earth in a whale-like ship to deliver the first humans Maba grew up in Dakar — a peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic, the westernmost point of Africa — with a lifelong connection to the ocean and whales breaching His whale philosophy: "They keep trying to get out of the ocean and fall back in — so I gave them wings" The wine partnership began in June 2022 at a Miami lunch meeting; by August 2022 he was in Perpignan, south of France, meeting winemaker DJ Rodriguez (flies into Barcelona, drives to meet him) Flying Whale Gold (Red) — 2023 vintage Grenache Noir/Syrah blend; inspired by big California Cabs but crafted silkier, rounder, less tannic; meant to be enjoyed slightly chilled or with a meal; soft launched at Aspen Food & Wine, June 2025; fully launched August 2025 Flying Whale Rosé — Grenache/Syrah; fuller body, dry, strawberry/peach with citrus balance; designed as an "all season" rosé — equally at home by the fireplace or poolside Flying Whale White Gold (in development) — a Viognier that drinks like a Chardonnay; floral nose and finish of Viognier + buttery/greasy mouthfeel of Chardonnay; inspiration struck at Miami Vine Expo Maba's creative process: ideas come at 4–5am; keeps notebooks everywhere including bedside Bottle design philosophy: "striking simplicity" — the medallion/coin aesthetic was designed to feel like a collector's item and a gift Writing the tasting notes was harder than the visual design — references the Pascal quote about not having time to write a short letter Partnership dynamic: Maba brings a beginner's mind and bigger dreams. flyingwhalewine.com @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In this Wine Wednesday Back Label Story, we take you to the Caucasus Mountains of the country of Georgia — home to what may be the oldest evidence of wine on earth. Clay jars called qvevri, buried in the ground and stained with 8,000-year-old grape residue, tell the story of a human relationship with wine that predates the pyramids and the Roman Empire. But the real twist comes from the Greeks and Romans themselves. Despite building entire cultures around wine — complete with gods, poetry, and legendary philosophical drinking parties — they considered drinking wine straight a sign of barbarism. Every symposium, every gathering, every social occasion ran on wine cut with two or three parts water. Drinking it undiluted? That was something the Scythians did. Barbarians. The people you never wanted to be compared to. So the next time you reach for a glass of water alongside your Cabernet, raise it. You're not being cautious. You're being civilized — exactly the way the ancients intended. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Flying Whale rosé is a Grenache/Syrah blend — fuller body than a typical rosé, dry, with strawberry and peach fruit balanced by citrus, finished with that signature silky texture. Maba's word for his entire wine lineup so far: "silky" — it's the through-line he's chasing across every bottle. He rejects the idea of "rosé season" — he designed this wine to work year-round, from poolside in summer to fireside in winter; he calls it the "all season" wine. The third wine (White Gold) is a Viognier — inspiration struck at Miami Vine Expo after Napa tastings had him leaning toward Chardonnay. His goal: a Viognier with the floral nose and finish of a classic Viognier but the buttery, almost greasy mouthfeel of a Chardonnay — a challenge his winemaker partner initially resisted. The partnership dynamic: Maba brings a beginner's mind and bigger dreams; his French-trained winemaker partner DJ brings deep Old World tradition — the tension is productive and fun Maba notes that long experience can sometimes mean thinking inside a very rich box — his outside perspective is what keeps the collaboration exciting. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Thomas Jefferson didn't just like wine — he was consumed by it. He walked the vineyards of Bordeaux, shipped Sauternes to George Washington, advised four presidents on what to pour at state dinners, and kept obsessive records of every single bottle he ever purchased. Over three decades, that total reached 20,000 bottles. So in 1985, when a German wine dealer named Hardy Rodenstock surfaced with bottles of 18th-century wine etched with the initials "T.J." — allegedly discovered behind a bricked-up wall in a Paris building — the story was irresistible. A 1787 Château Lafite went to auction at Christie's and sold to Malcolm Forbes for $156,000. Still the highest price ever paid for a single bottle of wine. American billionaire Bill Koch bought four more. Then in 2005, he called Monticello to authenticate them — and everything unraveled. Jefferson's foundation said the bottles had no place in his meticulous records. Forensics experts examined the etched initials and concluded they'd been made with an electric power tool. A Dremel drill. In the 18th century. Koch spent over $35 million investigating. He sued Rodenstock — whose real name turned out to be Meinhard Görke — sued Christie's, sued auction houses across two continents. Investigators uncovered a label forger in Germany who had been printing fake provenance labels for Rodenstock for years. Rodenstock refused to appear in an American court. A judge ruled against him in absentia. He never paid a cent. The front label tells you what they want you to know. The back label tells you everything else. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Maba designed the bottle immediately after his first winemaker meeting in August — the creative energy was instant. The bottle's medallion design was intentional: he wanted it to feel like a collector's coin, something giftable and meaningful The label tells the story of the Dogon people — an ancient West African cosmology involving beings who traveled to Earth in a whale-like vessel through the ocean. Design philosophy: "striking simplicity" — influenced by his storytelling and film background The tasting notes on the website (color, nose, palate, finish) took far longer to write than the visual design — condensing complex ideas into simple, evocative language is the real challenge. Maba references the Blaise Pascal quote about a long letter: "I didn't have time to write a short one" — brevity is the hardest craft. He keeps notebooks everywhere, including bedside, to capture early morning ideas (often 4–5am) Forrest relates — both he and Maba are early-morning creative thinkers who chase ideas before they disappear. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In 1805, a 27-year-old French widow was handed a struggling wine business, a mountain of debt, and a legal system that said she had no right to run either. Her name was Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin. You know her today as Veuve Clicquot. What she built in the decades that followed didn't just save a family business — it changed how every bottle of champagne on earth is made. In this episode of The Back Label, we follow the widow's journey from a stone house in Reims to the Russian Imperial Court — through Napoleon's blockades, a revolutionary invention made from a simple wooden board, and a shipment of 10,550 bottles that beat every competitor to market by weeks. And then — the full pour. Nearly two hundred years after her death, a group of Finnish scuba divers found something at the bottom of the Baltic Sea that nobody expected. Her champagne. It's one of the most dramatic moments in wine history — and it almost didn't happen. Steven Spurrier, an Englishman running a small wine shop and the first independent wine school in Paris, organized what was supposed to be a friendly Franco-American comparison in honor of the U.S. bicentennial. His colleague Patricia Gallagher had visited Napa, tasted the wines, and believed. The California winemakers themselves had no idea their bottles were even entered. Getting the wine to Paris was its own adventure — Patricia Gallagher sweet-talked TWA passengers into carrying bottles in their personal luggage just to get past the two-bottle limit. The blind tasting results stunned the room. A Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena topped France's finest Burgundies. The 1973 Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon outscored Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion. One judge demanded her ballot back. Spurrier was reportedly banned from France's prestigious wine tour circuit for a year. The lone journalist in the room filed his story for Time magazine. It ran on page 85, next to a tire ad. Nobody thought it mattered. Then came 2006. The same wines, tasted again — 30 years later. The French had long insisted California wines couldn't age. The rematch told a different story: all top five wines were from California. The whole story comes alive in the film Bottle Shock — highly recommended viewing. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Documentary That Sparked a Wine Empire Maba Ba traveled to Senegal to produce a documentary about Mbeubeuss, a massive wasteland outside Dakar where entire families live and work among the trash. As the transcript states: “It’s literally a city of trash… there are people who live in that city.” The film aimed to highlight how global environmental reforms ignore the people whose livelihoods depend on this ecosystem. The Unexpected Path to Flying Whale Wine Before leaving for Senegal, a woman told Maba about a talented French winemaker. After filming, he flew to Barcelona, drove to Perpignan, and met the winemaker in person. Their connection was instant — shared language (both speak French), shared passion, and shared ambition. Flying Whale Wine, born from a collaboration between Maba Ba and winemaker Didier Rodriguez, is rooted in the rich terroir of Roussillon at Domaine Sol Payre. Established in 1913, this family estate has cultivated its 56 hectares for over a century, guided by passion, tradition, and a deep respect for the land. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sherman Mohr has been navigating pivots his entire career — and he's gotten very good at it. In this episode, Forrest sits down with the co-founder and COO of Shared Spirits (sharedspirits.com), a mobile app that lets you buy, share, and redeem wine, beer, and cocktails directly through participating restaurants. Sherman's road to the wine world wound through the mortgage industry, a move to Nashville in 1990, and eventually a leap into marketing and technology. Shared Spirits was born in the mid-2010s — a concept, Sherman admits, that was ahead of its time. When COVID hit and restaurants went dark, he didn't wait it out. He launched Liquid Ellipse Marketing, a promotional agency placing brand ambassadors in retail wine and spirits stores — and built it into a company that ran 1,700 events in a single year. Now with Shared Spirits relaunched and growing, Sherman is also channeling his experience into Over50Pros, a new venture serving professionals over 50 navigating career transitions. Key takeaways from this episode: The Shared Spirits app is essentially Venmo for cocktails — integrated directly with a restaurant's beverage program Retail wine stores were deemed essential during COVID, which opened the door for the promo agency pivot Despite headlines about the wine industry's challenges, Sherman sees strong consumer demand on the ground @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Is corked wine actually better than screw cap? Mark from New Jersey — who calls himself "Cheap Drunk" — phones in with a question his lady has been giving him grief about, and Forrest Kelly along with Sour Grapes sets the record straight. The truth is, screw caps aren't a sign of a cheap wine — they're a sign of a smart winery. From the history of cork to the very real problem of cork taint, this episode breaks down one of wine's most persistent myths in classic Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast fashion: fast, funny, and completely on your side. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sour Grapes — who returns after a brief absence involving a rogue travel influencer, an airspace dispute, and Sour's vineyard dog, Bubbly who declared war on a drone. Once the chaos is explained, Sour Grapes gets down to business: that comfortable mid-range price point you keep landing on isn't about quality — it's about psychology. The wine industry has engineered a "safe zone" designed for shoppers who want to feel sophisticated without making a commitment. Under $15 feels risky. Over $25 feels like a statement. But $18.99? That's the sweet spot built on behavioral economics, distributor margins, and shelf strategy — not winemakers singing over stainless steel tanks. Sour Grapes also calls out one of the wine world's least-talked-about secrets: that heavy bottle you think signals quality? You're paying for the glass. Literally. The episode closes with a challenge to stop shopping by number and start paying attention to region, importer, and the winemaker behind the label — because a $14 bottle from an honest producer can humble a $32 ego bottle any day of the week. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Master Sommelier Ian Cauble joins host Forrest Kelly to talk about how he curates wine recommendations — tasting through hundreds of bottles so you don't have to. Ian also weighs in on the decline in wine sales among younger generations, why he sees a price correction coming, and what makes wine irreplaceable as a sensory and cultural experience. Plus, he shares a wine fact that almost nobody believes: it's actually illegal to water your vines in France. Ian explains his curation process at TheCaubleist.com — tasting roughly 1 in 10 wines he samples to find the best value and quality for consumers. Why Ian's philosophy is simple: if you spent $35 on a bottle, it should bring real pleasure. Wine sales are declining, especially among younger generations — Ian shares his take on why. The case for a price correction in premium wine given today's economy. Why Ian believes wine is irreplaceable — the history, the stories, and the sensory experience behind every glass. Blind tasting as storytelling: how a single sip can tell you exactly where in the world a wine came from. The wine fact almost nobody believes: it is illegal to irrigate vineyards in France and Italy. How getting caught watering your vines in France could cost you your appellation designation for that vintage. A breakdown of France's nearly 500 AOCs and why the rules behind them matter to the consumer. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In this episode of The Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast, host Forrest Kelly sits down with Master Sommelier Ian Cauble — one of the most recognized wine experts in the world and a central figure in the acclaimed documentary SOMM — for a candid and entertaining conversation about wine, life, and what it really means to guide someone to the perfect bottle. Ian opens up about the philosophy behind great sommeliering: it's not about showing off knowledge, it's about helping people spend their money wisely, pair wine beautifully with food, and leave the table with a smile. Whether you have $55 or $500 to spend, Ian believes a great sommelier finds you something special every single time. The conversation takes a fun turn as Ian reflects on life after SOMM — being recognized in customs lines in Vietnam, stopped on streets in Austria and Mexico, and walking into European restaurants where the staff already knows his face. Fame, it turns out, follows you in the wine world. Ian then dives into his brand new venture, The Caubleist — a daily email wine discovery service launched in early November that sends subscribers a curated 500-word deep dive on a single bottle every morning at 10am, including history, food pairings, recipes, glassware recommendations, and the best price available nationwide. With flat-rate shipping, an upcoming monthly four-bottle club, a private client cellar-building division, and live tasting events, The Cobalist is shaping up to be a must-follow for any serious wine lover. @thebestwinepod Discover More from The Best 5 Minute Podcast Network: Wine Podcast Music Podcast Travel Podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What does it take to join one of the most exclusive wine clubs in the world? In Part 2 of The Caubleist, Master Sommelier Ian Cauble pulls back the curtain on the grueling journey to earning the master sommelier title — a distinction held by fewer than 275 people worldwide. Forrest digs into Ian's story, from a self-described "savant" moment at age 17 to globe-trotting through Croatia, South Korea, Japan, and beyond, as Ian shares how a lifelong love of food, culture, and fermented beverages drove him to conquer a three-part exam with a staggering 3% pass rate. Ian breaks down exactly what the master exam demands — from blind tasting six wines with pinpoint precision to navigating a live service exam in front of the world's top sommeliers. Rusty Sellers and Sour Grapes to bust three of the most common wine myths: Wine Legs Mean Quality The truth: Legs reflect alcohol and sugar content, not flavor or complexity. Sour’s take: “The only legs I trust are the ones that walk me out of a bad blind date.” Older Wine is Always Better Reality: Only a small fraction of wines age well. Most are meant to be enjoyed young. Sour’s story: That “aged to perfection” bottle? It tasted like wet socks — even his dog Bubbly wouldn’t touch it. Expensive Wine Tastes Better Fact: Price can reflect rarity or reputation, but taste is personal. Sour’s roast: “$300 for dirty laundry water.
