Guitarist Page Hamilton was there to study Jazz at the Manhattan School of Music. He auditioned for and then joined Band of Susans. He brought a few of his own songs to the band, but even though they liked the songs, they were not a fit for the Susans. There was nothing to do but form his own band. We don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that rock music was changed forever. Helmet’s tunings, rhythms, and chord voicings are startlingly original, and easily as heavy as anything that came before or after them. Their most recent album is 2023’s LEFT, released through earMUSIC, and their 2024 covers and live tracks compilation Move On. On the show this time, Thailand meets West Africa through the electrifying drumming of Salin. Salin was born and raised in Thailand. She started out learning music on the piano, but switched to drums partly because the drum teacher was fun, and partly because she was listening to metal. She got good! Good enough to get work as a session drummer for Sony Thailand. She moved to the United States for college. While there she joined a band in Montreal – driving 10 hours along the Great Lakes to go to practice. She learned about new music from her bandmate and fell in love with soul and funk. Her latest album, Rammana, merges those influences with jazz, indigenous Thai, and African sounds for a sound she calls “Afro Thai Funk”. Rammana is available now on Bandcamp. On the show this time, Thailand meets West Africa through the electrifying drumming of Salin. Salin was born and raised in Thailand. She started out learning music on the piano, but switched to drums partly because the drum teacher was fun, and partly because she was listening to metal. She got good! Good enough to get work as a session drummer for Sony Thailand. She moved to the United States for college. While there she joined a band in Montreal – driving 10 hours along the Great Lakes to go to practice. She learned about new music from her bandmate and fell in love with soul and funk. Her latest album, Rammana, merges those influences with jazz, indigenous Thai, and African sounds for a sound she calls “Afro Thai Funk”. Rammana is available now on Bandcamp. Janus Rasmussen is in the band Bloodgroup, and creates his own melodic experimental music in Reykjavik. They started together in 2009, releasing their self-titled full-length in 2014. The lyrics sort of follow the trials and tribulations of singer Xu Bo’s dream of becoming a rock star, and the band touring the world.  There’s a humility to the lyrics that borders on self deprecation, what they call “the hesitation which follows failure.” Once the band fires up though, there is no hesitation, they deliver tight jangly, intricate riffs, poppy harmony, and a danceable groove. Their sound is highly original, using samples, noisy punk guitars, grooves from a wide variety of influences and thought provoking lyrics. They describe their recent music thus - “our last release, 2023’s 'i’m so lucky,' explored the breakup between guitarist Zach Schwartz and bassist Rivka Ravede, setting the stage and emotional territory for the band’s fifth record, 'YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING.' They released 3 albums on Captured Tracks and survived member changes, stints in rehab, almost calling it quits, and a reorganization to a more democratic structure to get to this point. Camera Obscura is an indie Scottish band from Glasgow.  They’ve been making music together since 1996, though they took some time away from the band following keyboardist Carey Lander’s illness and eventual death from cancer. They reunited in 2018, to play a festival -cruise show - the Boaty Weekender - with fellow Glaswegians Belle & Sebastian.  A few years later, they announced some new music and a tour, and their latest album Look to the East, Look to the West is available on Merge Records. Miki Berenyi is a founding member and the eventual lead singer of the legendary shoegaze band Lush. She wrote a book about her childhood, and her life leading up to forming Lush, as well as the unvarnished reality of playing in a band in the 90s. Thanks to the book, and being continually asked to play music at book events, she formed a trio. They have a single, “Vertigo,” out on Bella Union. Recorded 06/04/2024. On the show this time, it’s the timeless freedom and fearlessness of Feist. Feist is the moniker of Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Leslie Feist. She’s been making music since she was a teenager, her first punk rock band winning a battle of the bands back in 1993.  She toured with that band, until she was forced to take a 6 month break from singing due to losing her voice.  She became the bassist for a friend's band.  She became the guitarist in another band.  She wrote songs and when she was ready, released her debut solo record in 1999. Her latest album released in 2023 is called “Multitudes” and is available on Polydor Records. Recorded 05/24/2024.
