Greg Laurie: A New Beginning

“Do you have any crosses without the little man on it?” That’s a real question a woman once asked in a jewelry store. And it says more about how we’ve sanitized the cross today than we’d like to admit. In this message, Pastor Greg Laurie walks us through the darkest hour in human history—and the love that held Jesus there. Notes: Luke 23  The cross was not a fashion statement.It was the most scandalous, horrifying symbol imaginable. Next to Christ’s arrival in Bethlehem, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus are the most important events in human history. At the cross, God and man were reconciled. God's righteous demands were satisfied. It's not an accident that when Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, He pointed us straight back to the cross, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” Read 1 Corinthians 15:14–17 But here's the good news: Jesus did die, and He did rise again.And because of that, we know there really is life beyond the grave. That's what sets our faith apart from every other religion. The cross was not an accident, but a plan. God’s plan.Acts 2:23 The cross wasn't a detour from Jesus’ mission.It was the mission. Before there was a Bethlehem, there was a Calvary. Before there was a crown of thorns, a decision was made. Romans 5:8 (KJV)While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 10:18 (NIV)“No one takes My life from me, but I lay it down of My own accord” Christ’s road to the cross ran through a series of illegal and rigged hearings. Read Luke 23:26, 32–33 Simon from Cyrene was forced to carry the cross of Jesus. A garrison was 600 elite Roman legionnaires. Matthew 26:53 (NIV)“Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” Jesus had access to more than 70,000 angels. God placed Simon there to have the greatest privilege: to ease the pain of Jesus momentarily as he carried His cross. This brush with Jesus changed Simon forever. Read Luke 23:33–43 The Romans did not invent crucifixion, but they took it to another level. Rome perfected it into a science of suffering. It was a punishment designed to produce the slowest possible death with the greatest possible pain. Crucifixion was death by suffocation. A crucified person might survive for hours, sometimes days. Your arms tire, and your chest can no longer expand to breathe.Therefore, you must push up against the nail in your feet to pull in another breath.  THE SEVEN STATEMENTS FROM THE CROSS:1. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).2. “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). 3. “Woman, behold your son! Son, behold your mother” (John 19:26).4. “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).5. “I thirst” (John 19:28).6. “It is finished” (John 19:30).7. “Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit” (Luke 23:46). Matthew 5:44 (NKJV)“Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you.” Our sins put Jesus on the cross. Acts 2:36 (NKJV)“God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”  That first prayer from the cross, “Father, forgive them,” was ultimately answered.Thousands of those very people were cut to the heart, turned, and believed. No one is beyond the reach of prayer. The two criminals couldn't have escaped their crosses.Jesus could have escaped His with a single word to Heaven. No one is beyond the reach of God, not even a hardened criminal. Believing in Jesus can happen in a flash. Read Luke 23:40–42 This man, only moments old in his new faith, had amazing insight.He knew Jesus was the Son of God and would be going to His kingdom. Luke 23:43 (NIV)“Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”  Luke 9:23 (ESV)“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” The cross means dying to self. Luke 9:24 (NIV)“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will save it.” The world says, “Find yourself.”Jesus says, “Lose yourself.” Losing your life for His sake isn't the loss of everything.It's the discovery of everything that matters. Isaiah 53:10 (NKJV)It pleased the LORD to bruise Him. Jesus died to show His love for us. If you are ever tempted to doubt God’s love for you, look at the cross. Jesus died to absorb the wrath of God. Jesus suffered and died to provide our forgiveness and justification. Christianity says, “Done!”Jesus said, “It is finished; it is accomplished!” Christ’s love for you and me held Him to the cross. — Become a Harvest Partner today and join us in knowing God and making Him known through media and large-scale evangelism, our mission of over 30 years. Nobody backslides overnight. It’s neglect here, a missed prayer there, a compromise in another area—and before you know it, you’re sinking.That’s exactly what happened to Simon Peter. The night before the cross, he boasted he’d never abandon Jesus, even if everyone else did. Within hours he’d fallen asleep when he should’ve been praying, swung a sword when he should’ve trusted God, followed at a distance instead of staying close, and warmed himself by the wrong fire with the wrong crowd. When a servant girl recognized him, Peter cursed and swore he didn’t even know Jesus. Immediately, the rooster crowed—and Jesus turned and looked at him.But that wasn’t the end of his story. Three days later, an angel gave the women at the tomb a message with two words that still carry grace: “and Peter.” Weeks later, the same man who denied Jesus three times stood up and preached the sermon that led three thousand people to faith.Fallen? Yes. Finished? No.If you’ve fallen, hear this: God doesn’t run from failure. He restores it. Your failure isn’t final when you belong to Jesus. Run to Him, not from Him. Notes: Luke 22  1 Timothy 4:1 (NLT)Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. One sign that points to Christ’s return is that some people will fall away spiritually. If we are not moving forward, we are naturally going backward.There is no standing still spiritually. We are either progressing or regressing. Hebrews 2:1 (NLT)So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. After you have fallen, you may wonder if you can be forgiven. The past cannot be changed, but our response to it can be.God can take our endings and turn them into beginnings. The fall of Simon Peter is the anatomy of backsliding. Read Luke 22:31–34 Satan himself targeted the big fisherman. It is unlikely any of us has personally been tempted by the devil himself. Satan had to ask God first.He can do nothing in the life of a child of God without our Father’s permission. Even when Satan attacked Job, he was under divine restraint. Jesus is saying to Peter, “Simon, I know you better than you know yourself.” Jesus is interceding for us.Romans 8:34–35  Jesus added a very important detail.Peter’s lapse will be temporary.Peter will return and be stronger for it.Luke 22:32 1 Peter 5:10 (NLT)After you have suffered a little while, God will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you on a firm foundation. The trial you are going through has a beginning, a middle, and an end. God has a purpose for your life.Psalm 30:5 Satan targeted Peter because he could see that Peter was a spiritual leader who could shake his world. The devil sets his sights on those who are a threat to the kingdom of darkness. Peter’s first step down was self-confidence.Matthew 26:33 1 Corinthians 10:12 (NKJV)Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. Read Luke 22: 39–46 Peter’s second step down was prayerlessness. All Jesus asked of Peter, James, and John was to be with Him and pray. Peter, James, and John were not watching and praying.Instead, they are slumbering and sleeping. Peter had no idea the storm was brewing. Prayerlessness can be as much of a sin as breaking a commandment.It’s a sin of omission.James 4:17 Peter’s third step down was self-reliance. Read Luke 22:47–51 Peter was boasting when he should have been listening.Sleeping when he should have been praying.Now he was fighting when he should have been trusting. Peter was fighting the wrong enemy with the wrong weapon. Our enemies are not flesh and blood, and they cannot be defeated with ordinary weapons.  2 Corinthians 10:4 Peter’s fourth step down was following at a distance.Luke 22:54–55 Peter’s fifth step down was wrong associations. Read Luke 22:55–61 It was not the end but a new beginning.  Peter’s sixth step down was his denial. Curse was a very strong term pronouncing death on oneself by the hand of God if they were lying. Peter had lost all sense of reality and seemingly all awareness of God. Read Luke 22:59–62 Peter would be able to use his failure as a way to encourage others who had failed. Nobody is above falling into sin. Simon Peter:fallen but forgiven,broken but not abandoned. Jesus restored Peter. The same Peter, who cursed and swore that he did not know Jesus, stood up weeks later and preached a sermon on Pentecost that resulted in 3,000 coming to faith. God gives second chances. Your failure is not final when you belong to Jesus.He can restore you as he did Peter.Jeremiah 3:22 — Become a Harvest Partner today and join us in knowing God and making Him known through media and large-scale evangelism, our mission of over 30 years. We think if we had a nicer car, or a bigger house, or a larger salary, or a new face, or new body, then we’d be content. But Max Lucado says: “The good life begins not when circumstances change but when our attitude toward them does.”  And writing to the Christians in Philippi, the apostle Paul said, “Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.” (Philippians 4:11–12 NLT). Paul was in difficult circumstances when he wrote these words. He wasn’t spouting theories from an ivory tower. He was under house arrest, writing from the school of hard knocks. Yet Paul found contentment because he rejoiced in the Lord. Earlier in Philippians 4, he wrote, "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!" (verse 4 NKJV). He didn’t say that we should rejoice in circumstances. Sometimes that’s hard to do. But Paul did say that we should rejoice in the Lord. It has been found difficult and left untried.”—G.K. Chesterton Some people are simply impulsive by nature.Some people fall away because they have built their faith on the wrong foundation. Some people fall away because of persecution. Mark 4:17 (NLT)But since they don't have deep roots, they don't last long. Some things seem impossible. But with God, nothing is. Even our nation, which seems so filled with darkness, can change with the Lord. Yes, there is hope for America. And it starts with Christians. Christians are salt and light. Salt preserves. Salt stimulates thirst. Light exposes darkness and shows the way out. And as salt and light, Christians must infiltrate culture, not isolate. Christians are not called to evade, but invade. And who knows? You may be the only representative of Jesus some people will ever see! They may never read the Bible, but they’ll read your life. Notes: Some things just seem impossible. But with God, nothing is impossible. Our country is in a state of moral and spiritual crisis. We have two options before us as a nation: judgment or revival. Read Matthew 5:13–16 (NKJV) The world needs salt because it is corrupt and light because it is dark.  This world will get worse before it gets better.2 Timothy 3:13 Sometimes Christians try to isolate. Jesus has not called us to isolate, but to infiltrate. Not to evade but to invade. Jesus is sending us into the world.  Before the American Revolution, there was spiritual revelation. The American Revolution worked because it was rooted in spiritual and biblical principles. “To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest gloryto add the more distinguished character of Christian”.  —George Washington “The Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.”  —John Adams We must stand for truth, whether it is popular or not. To reach our culture, we must use a language people understand. 1 Corinthians 9:22–23 We need to bring them the message of the gospel. 2 Corinthians 2:14–15 But before we can effectively tell them, we must first live it. Salt PreservesThe main function of salt in Jesus’ day was preservation. Christians, like salt, are also here to preserve. Salt Stimulates ThirstAs we live godly lives, we make other people thirsty for God. We cannot stimulate spiritual thirst in others if we have lost our own. We cannot be used by God to stop the corruption of sin in others if sin has corrupted us.Matthew 5:13 Jesus first says we are to be salt, then He says we are to be light. Salt is hidden, whereas light is obvious.Salt works secretly while light works openly.Salt works from within, but light works from without. Salt works primarily through our living, while light works through what we say to others. Light exposes the darkness. You are the only representative of Jesus Christ that many nonbelievers will ever see. We need to infiltrate, not isolate, being both salt and light.  We need to pray.2 Chronicles 7:14 We need to preach the gospel message. There is hope for America, and there is hope for you. Hebrews 4:7(b)If you can hear His voice, harden not your heart. Many of us are carrying burdens God never intended us to carry. We carry worry, fear, anxiety, guilt, and more. Prayer is God's invitation to transfer those burdens from our shoulders to His. “What happens one minute after you die?” Jesus answered it plainly in Luke 16. Listen in to today's message from Pastor Greg Laurie. Notes: Luke 16  Everyone will die and enter the afterlife.Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 Hebrews 9:27 (NKJV)And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.  What happens one minute after you die?If you are a Christian, you go to heaven. 2 Corinthians 5:8To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Philippians 1:23“I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.” What happens to the nonbeliever when they die?  Most people do not think they will go to hell. Matthew 7:13 (NKJV)Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad [is] the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Matthew 7:14 (NKJV)Because narrow is the gate and difficult [is] the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. If we believe the Bible, most people today are not headed to heaven. The very word “hell” is so misused that people do not even understand its meaning. Jesus spent more time talking about hell than any other preacher. Jesus gives us three things we need to know about what hell is actually like. Read Luke 16:19–22 Jesus tells a true story about two men:one owning everything, yet possessing nothing,the other owning nothing and inheriting everything. We get a behind-the-scenes look at the eternal future of the nonbeliever. Read Luke 16:22–31 The sin of the rich man in Hell was not his wealth, but his heart. He was possessed by his possessions.Luke 16:19  Sin is pleasurable for a season, but then it brings death. The rich man was living the good life with no concern for anything or anyone but himself. The rich man was not ushered into Heaven like Lazarus. The rich man’s sin was disregard for the spiritual, revealed in his prideful flaunting of resources and his neglect of a starving, disabled man at his door.  You can build an empire, fill every room with every award, and still arrive at eternity completely unprepared. People in Hell suffer. Nonbelievers don’t go to purgatory, soul sleep, or reincarnation. Nonbelievers go to Hell and eventually to the Lake of Fire.  God invented Hell because He is a God of love and justice. Once you enter the afterlife, you cannot change your location. We decide in this life where we will spend the afterlife. There are no chances after death, but millions before. You cannot communicate from the other side. In the afterlife, you are conscious and fully aware of where you are. Just as there is memory in Heaven, there is also memory in hell.Luke 16:28 If you are born once, you will die twice.If you are born twice, you will die once. Often, Christians are reluctant to mention Hell out of fear that they might offend someone. To promise heaven and not warn of hell,to offer forgiveness without repentance,to preach the gospel without the cross,this is a false message giving false hope. If we really love people, we need to tell the truth about eternity. Jude 1:22Show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. Jude 1:23aRescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Read Luke 19:29–31 Jesus did many miracles, and many did not believe. The gospel is a universal declaration that Hell is not God’s desire for anyone. The road to Hell is paved with excuses. God has a much better plan for you.It’s called Heaven! What happens one minute after you die?If you are a believer in Jesus, you go to Heaven.If you reject His offer, you send yourself to Hell. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Every young person is looking for three things:a place to belong,a purpose to live for,and to be loved. Jairus had great faith in Christ. Then this woman burst on the scene.How easily Jairus could have resented this intrusion. Jesus is never late. Even the greatest prophet had a moment of uncertainty. But rather than condemn John, Jesus gave a response that may surprise some of us. Notes: Luke 7 John, in a moment of doubt, sent a message to Jesus,“Are You the One, or should we look for another?”  Doubt is a sign that someone is thinking. A French proverb says, “He who knows nothing doubts nothing.” “Doubt is not the opposite of faith; it is an element of faith.” #1 Moses was ready to quit. Numbers 11:14–15"I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me. If You treat me like this, please kill me now." #2 Elijah was ready to quit.(1 Kings 19:4) #3 Jesus rebuked His disciples for their lack of faith. #4 Paul the Apostle was deeply discouraged.(2 Corinthians 1:8) #5 David wrote half the Psalms while angry, confused, or feeling abandoned by God. #6 John the Baptist was discouraged and entertained doubts. Read Luke 7:18–28 John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. John was in prison because of his bold preaching to King Herod. In John’s mind, Jesus the Messiah would organize a revolt. John was expecting political deliverance.Jesus was bringing spiritual deliverance. Sometimes we misunderstand God and His word.  Jesus understood John’s questions and his doubt. Jesus answered John’s doubt with evidence and clarification, not condemnation. Galatians 5:15But if you are always biting and devouring one another,watch out! Beware of destroying one another. It is easier to critique than create.It is easier to tear down instead of build up. Jesus loves you and understands your questions, too. Psalm 10:1Why, O LORD, do you stand far away?Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Psalm 10:16 (a)The LORD is king forever and ever. Jesus defended John publicly,when John criticized Jesus privately.(Luke 7:24) You have immeasurable value because you are God’s creation.(1 Peter 2:9) Ephesians 2:10For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago. God loves you so much that He sent His Son to die on the cross so you could have a relationship with Him. Doubt is a matter of the mind. Unbelief is a matter of the will. John was doubting, but he still believed. Jesus refocused John’s priorities. John’s doubts were answered by Scripture.(Luke 7:22) Stay the course when you don’t see the plan.(Luke 7:23) Luke 7:28I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. What kind of faith gets Heaven’s attention? In Luke 7, Jesus was amazed by a Roman centurion’s faith—not a religious leader, but a soldier who understood authority and believed Jesus could heal his servant with just a word... Notes The Roman soldier’s amazing faith got Heaven’s attention. Weak or strong, everyone has a form of faith.  Read Luke 7:1–10 Luke 7:9When Jesus heard this, He was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following Him, He said, "I tell you, I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel!" Everything about Jesus was amazing. Matthew 8:27They were amazed and said, "What kind of Man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey Him!"  Luke 7:9When Jesus heard this, He was amazed. Roman centurions were significant people.   This centurion somehow knew Jesus could heal his beloved servant. Sometimes non-believers have more faith than believers. The two disciples on the Emmaus Road summed it up, “We had hoped He was the One.” The non-believers remembered what Jesus said would happen after He died. Matthew 27:63We remember that while He was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.' Where does sickness come from? Sickness and death were not part of God’s original plan for us. Romans 5:12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned. Satan brought the afflictions in Job's life. God will, on occasion, allow sickness in our lives to keep us humble, to teach us lessons, and to prepare us for the future. #1 Natural healing is what God built into the human body. #2 There is supernatural healing too. There is a promise of healing in the book of Isaiah.(Isaiah 53:4–5) 1 Peter 2:24"He himself bore our sins" in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; "by His wounds you have been healed." Lay hold of this promise when you need His healing touch. Why are some of us still sick?One reason is simply a lack of asking.(James. 4:2) Mark 6:5–6And because of their unbelief, he couldn't do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. The people who knew Jesus best couldn’t see Him for who He really was. Hebrews 11:1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. The safest place to put your faith is in God. Faith is belief plus action. Faith does things. Amazing faith is to be used, applied, and put through its paces. The Christian life is lived by and through faith. Faith can make the difference between something happening and not happening. God is the One who works.But He chooses to work through humans living by faith. Even death is not the end. Jesus said, “I am the living One. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever!I hold the keys of death and the grave.” The powerful centurion had rank, influence, and resources.The widow had nothing.   The centurion reached out to Jesus.But Jesus reached out to the woman. Read Luke 7:11–17 Luke 7:13When the Lord saw her, His heart overflowed with compassion. "Don't cry!" He said. Jesus was deeply moved by the widow’s plight. Jonah knew the nature of God was to forgive. Jesus feels sorrow and compassion for those who have lost loved ones. We will see our loved ones who died in faith again. Paul uses the word “harpazō”, translated as “caught up.”(1 Thessalonians 4:16–17) The centurion demonstrated amazing faith. For the people of Nazareth, their familiarity bred contempt. The church is a dangerous place.
