Holding a Business Degree with an emphasis in marketing I worked in the corporate world for the first 15 years after graduating. It was at the end of those 15 years that I had the clear call of God on my life to enter vocational ministry and plant a church. So I quit my six-figure business career, the Senior Leadership Team of a $200M national healthcare company, and gave up my corner office. I burned the ships! I enrolled in Talbot Theological Seminary and graduated two years later. After graduating I planted a non-denominational Bible teaching church in 2006. I have watched it grow from 25 people in a backyard to celebrate Easter each year with over 5000 people, a permanent campus, and a multi-staff of over 70. My wife, Stacey, and I have been married for 34 years, have 3 married kids, and 2 grandkids. We still love each other and we love our church. My life story is the story of God's grace. Now I want to share some of the grace with other Lead Pastors.

Fifteen years into a career that began humbly, writing songs in college and touring the southeast in his Honda Accord, Ben Rector found himself in a place where many artists did at the start of a global pandemic: reassessing his reasoning for a career in music in the first place. The internal prodding organically led to a seat back at the piano in his home studio, where Rector processed his findings with the ornate-but-relatable lyricism fans have come to know and love. The end result is his forthcoming album The Joy of Music, due out March 11. Over the course of 12 tracks, the Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter reaffirms his penchant for evocative, piano-pop anthems that touch on family, fame and friendship. Musically, it’s also full of collaborative surprises, showcasing a breathtaking evolution in sound and spirit - leading to what Rector considers his best work to-date. The Joy of Music is “a good microcosm of what the last couple of years of my life have been, which is trying to find joy and peace where I’m at, and finding it,” Ben says. “I’m in a deep place of gratitude for where I’m at.” Indeed, his career has taken him from the challenging beginnings of every up-and–comer, to one of the most successful independent artists to-date - a gate-keeper, of sorts, and the creator of a highly effective career blueprint that continually leads to win after win. He’s amassed over a billion streams across all platforms; played live on a number of national television shows, including Jimmy Kimmel, Conan, The Today Show, and more; had his music featured in over a hundred TV shows, ads, and films including Pretty Little Liars and Castle (his single “Brand New” is one of the most licensed songs for television and film in the last five years); hit the number one spot on Billboard’s US Folk chart and the number nine spot on their top 200; was an all-star mentor on ABC hit show American Idol alongside Ryan Tedder, Jewel, Jason Aldean, Jimmie Allen, and Joss Stone (among others); sold out three consecutive nights at the legendary Ryman Auditorium as well as countless other theaters and arenas around the country... and that’s just the start. Fans of Ben’s musical stylings and persona will be pleased to find the new project marked by introspection, and this time, the results are more profound than ever. “I was so excited to wake up every morning and feel like a kid again, making music,” he explains of the recording process. “I wanted to make mistakes and take chances, and I was just so stoked to chase whatever sounded fun to me. It wasn’t from any sense of obligation, but just a fun wave to ride.” “It’s the best that it has been in a long time,” he croons on the album’s centerpiece, “Living My Best Life.” To learn more visit benrectormusic.com

In her new book, Fortune: How Race Broke My Family and the World—and How to Repair It All (Brazos Press, February 8, 2022), Harper draws on her lifelong journey to know her family’s history to recover the beauty of her heritage, expose the brokenness that race has wrought in America, and cast a vision for collective repair. Fortune, the name of Harper’s first non-indigenous ancestor born on American soil, bore the brunt of the nation’s first race, gender and citizenship laws. As Harper traces her family’s story through succeeding generations, she shows how American ideas, customs, and laws robbed her ancestors—and the ancestors of so many others—of their humanity and flourishing. As Harper lights a path through national and religious history, she clarifies exactly how and when the world broke and shows the way to redemption for us all. The book culminates with a vision of truth telling, reparation, and forgiveness that leads to beloved community. Lisa Sharon Harper (LSMA, Columbia University; MFA, University of Southern California) is the founder of Freedom Road, a consulting group dedicated to shrinking the narrative gap. A sought-after speaker, trainer, and consultant with more than 100,000 social media followers, Harper has written several books, including the critically acclaimed The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right. Her work has been featured in the New Yorker, Relevant, Essence, HuffPost, The National Civic Review, and CNN, and she has appeared on PBS's Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly, TV One, Fox News, NPR, and Al Jazeera America. Harper previously served as chief church engagement officer at Sojourners, where she mobilized the church to engage campaigns on immigration reform and racial justice. She has researched her family's origins for three decades and presented on her ancestors' achievements at the African American Civil War Museum. Harper lives in the same Philadelphia neighborhood where three generations of her ancestors lived. - Bob To learn more, visit LisaSharonHarper.com Book Trailer

It would be hard to find a church community, group of friends, or family who haven't suffered from the breakdown of dialogue over the past couple of years. All across the country, family members are refusing to speak to one another, friends have blocked each other on social media, and people refuse to return to their churches. It's hard to dream for peace, reconciliation, or redemption when there's so much conflict and misunderstanding. As we head into the holidays, when so many people are carrying the burden of fractured relationships, we wanted to bring someone who could help guide us through difficult relationships and bring empathy and dialogue back where it belongs. Christy Vines is the President & CEO of Ideos, a Christian organization focused on engaging empathy and empathic intelligence in spaces of conflict, division and polarization. She is a California-based expert on issues at the intersection of faith, social/cultural polarization, and conflict transformation. In addition to holding various leadership roles with the RAND Corporation, Institute for Global Engagement, and the American Security Project, her published articles and op-eds have appeared in outlets like the Washington Post, Religion News Service, Capital Commentary, and Christianity Today. She has a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a B.A. in Sociology with a quantitative analysis emphasis. On January 5th, Christy and her team at the Ideos Institute are releasing a new documentary film, Dialogue Lab: America. What happens when twelve Americans with wildly opposing viewpoints gather together to engage in empathy and dialogue? Go to nationdaldayofdialogue.com to sign up to view the film, and bring a film screening event to your family room, church, or small group of friends. - Bob P.S. There’s no escaping hardships in life. Nobody gets a hall pass on setbacks, conflict, heartache, or disappointment. How you respond, though, is a choice- it’s up to you. Certainly worrying and feeling overwhelmed are normal responses, but you don’t need to get stuck there. Maybe you’ve been blessed to have some amazing role models who taught you how to turn your heart towards God with vulnerability, prayer, and faith. If not, that’s okay- it’s never too late to learn how. That’s why I’m always so encouraged to spend time with friends who mentor me in their understanding of God and faith, and why I love sharing them with you, too. This week, we’re bringing the bright light of Ellie Holcomb to the Dream Big Podcast to talk about her new book, a devotional called Fighting Words, that will be a gift to your life. For eight years, Ellie Holcomb recorded and toured full-time with her husband's band, Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors, before stepping off the road when her first child was born. Her solo debut, As Sure As The Sun (2014), landed her a Top 10 hit on Christian radio with "The Broken Beautiful" and a GMA Dove Award for "New Artist of the Year." Her critically-acclaimed sophomore LP, Red Sea Road, followed in 2017. In subsequent years, Holcomb has released two children's books - each with a companion EP of original music written specifically for kids, the second of which earned her a Dove Award for "Children's Album of the Year," in 2020. This summer she released her third full-length solo project, Canyon, to much acclaim. "A deeper sorrow, a higher hope; to be broken is to be human," Ellie Holcomb says to sum up the content of her latest album. Holcomb most recently performed and interviewed on The TODAY Show with Amy Grant for the special FAITHFUL Project. She and her husband Drew Holcomb have also partnered with Tennessee Tourism for a campaign where they've also released two songs earlier this year. Last year, the Holcombs invited their fans into their home virtually nightly for their now-famed Kitchen Covers during the height of the pandemic. Ellie announces the release of her first devotional book: Fighting Words - 100 Days of Speaking Truth into the Darkness (B&H Publishing), on October 15, 2021. Named after one of her hit songs, "Fighting Words," Holcomb has penned a journaling devotional book filled with encouraging, honest reflections and questions to help you process scripture. Fighting Words is a place where you can wrestle, respond to, and take hold of precious truths in God's Word to help you push back the lies that so often consume, distract, and destroy us. P.S. When you’re going through something awful and tragic, it’s impossible to imagine the good parts that will come. You can’t see the resilience you’re building, the faith that you’re constructing, or the wrestling that turns into confident hope someday. But that’s how life works, especially when we choose to lean towards God during those difficult seasons. Maybe you’re going through one of those difficult moments right now. If not, perhaps you’ll find yourself there at some point in the future. Regardless, we know how helpful it can be to hear someone else’s journey of pain, loss, and recovery, and how it can spur on hope inside of us. That’s why we wanted to hear about bestselling cookbook author Danielle Walker’s life. Danielle Walker is a New York Times bestselling author (Against All Grain, Meals Made Simple, Celebrations, Eat What You Love, Food Saved Me) health advocate and self-trained chef. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at age 22 and suffering for many years, Danielle found health through dietary and lifestyle changes. Inspired by her own health journey, Danielle shares her gluten-free recipes on her blog as a beacon of hope for others. Her latest book, Food Saved Me: My Journey of Finding Health and Hope through the Power of Food, is now available. P.S. We'd like to extend to you a free month of our exclusive Bob Weekly content. Anything bold you do in life requires an element of risk. People might not understand what you’re doing, or openly disagree. You might not know if it’s all going to work out- there’s risk involved. But anything worth doing is worth taking those risks. The question is, what will you do with the uncertainty? Where will you put your trust and faith? As pastor and author Mike Todd says, “That dream God has given you might seem crazy right now, but what seems crazy in one season will be counted as faith in another.” This week we invited Mike Todd, the lead pastor of Transformation Church in Tulsa, OK on to the Dream Big Podcast. Mike and his wife, Natalie, are highly sought after speakers and leaders that have ministered and spoken in many churches and events, both domestically and internationally, all while leading Transformation Church where they reach over 5,000 people in physical attendance and over 20,000 people live online every week. Pastor Michael and Natalie live in Tulsa with four beautiful children—Isabella, Michael Jr., Ava, and Gia Todd. P.S. We'd like to extend to you a free month of our exclusive Bob Weekly content. If you're like me, then you want the story of your life to make a big splash- a meaningful impact in the world. The most important part of that, of course, is the way you live your life. The other part is how you reflect on the life that you're living. I try to do that through the stories I tell. If you want to make an impact with your words, then you're going to want to listen to today's new podcast episode and take a load of notes. Allison Trowbridge is the founder and CEO of Copper (https://copperbooks.com), a platform using curated content to help people gather in meaningful community. She's also the host of the "Pub Date" podcast, where she interviews authors launching their books to market and gets the story behind the story they are sharing with the world. Allison published her book, “Twenty-Two: Letters to a Young Woman Searching for Meaning” in 2017 with HarperCollins while completing her MBA at Oxford’s Said Business School. She became obsessed with publishing after witnessing a handful of books ignite the global anti-slavery movement, where she worked for nearly a decade leading marketing, fundraising, and international campaigns. - Bob P.S. It’s a uniquely challenging time to imagine a world without barriers, not to mention racial justice and peace. The conflict in our culture seems to get more palpable and explicit every day. It's always tempting to try to live up to the expectations other people have of us. Even if our past is marked by success, it's burdensome to try to keep that up. Normally, most of us keep at it- we keep striving the fulfill the expectations we think people have of who we are and what we do. It can feel overwhelming or frightening to imagine dealing with their disappointment with us. Fortunately, we don't have to get stuck in normal- we are new creations every day. This week on the podcast we dig into that conversation with my friend, Laura Story. About Laura and her Latest Book In the shifting (or even collapsing) of everything familiar in life, you don’t have to wring your hands in fear. Push past the loss of your “normal” with bestselling author and Bible teacher Laura Story, and step into the new story God is writing for you. You've been faced with circumstances beyond your control. Your plans are altered. But you have the blessing of a Father who loves you enough to take off the training wheels and place his beloved child in the best possible scenario for your good and growth. So Long, Normal guides you to leave behind the idols of comfort, caution, and routine so you can live strong and well, even when life takes an unwelcome turn. In her confessional, conversational style, worship leader, Bible teacher, and Christian recording artist Laura Story weaves her own personal stories with examples from Scripture of characters whose lives were upended by unexpected (and undesired) change. If you’ve participated in a community of faith before, you’ve probably quickly realized what most people eventually discover- it’s filled with a bunch of imperfect people. Whether you go to a megachurch or a local community church, it’s not uncommon for us to have experiences that get us more than a little off-kilter and disoriented about our faith. Sometimes, we can even get the wires all crossed and mistake who God is with what people speaking in His name do. The question is, how do we think through our faith and our relationship to the church well? How can we integrate our experiences and rediscover a faith in God that’s marked by love and grace? I doubt there’s anyone who can speak more wisely about that than Philip Yancey. Philip Yancey has authored over 25 books, in which he has wrestled with God, with the Church, and with fellow believers. After surviving a church background of what he now calls “toxic faith,” he ultimately came to know a God of grace and beauty. With a journalistic, story-telling style, he invites readers to accompany him as he probes the deepest mysteries of the Christian faith, and challenges readers to live as followers of Jesus. Many have done so. His books have sold more than 15 million copies in English, and have been translated into 40 languages worldwide. Philip’s bestselling titles include What’s So Amazing About Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew. His most recent book is a memoir, Where the Light Fell, released by Convergent Books on October 5th. Philip Yancey and his wife lived in downtown Chicago before moving to the foothills of Colorado, where they enjoy mountain climbing, skiing, wildlife, and many other delights of the Rocky Mountains. With all of the serious things happening in the world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or even bummed out. It’s hard to go through your normal routines and carry out your obligations while carrying the stress of the world on your shoulders. Sometimes, if you’re like me, you feel a level of anxiety to fix everything, or at least do something heroic to make a big splash and try to change where everything is headed. But God isn’t asking us to be a hero necessarily, he’s asking us to participate. What’s the best way to jump in? With the same playful, open-hearted attitude a kid would have. To show up, ready to play, willing to say yes to the adventure God has for us. This week on the Dream Big Podcast, we invited my friend Levi Lusko to share his recent children’s book and the message behind it we all need to hear. Levi Lusko is the founder and lead pastor of Fresh Life Church, located in Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Utah and everywhere online. He is the bestselling author of “Through the Eyes of a Lion,” “Swipe Right,” and “I Declare War.” Levi also travels the world speaking about Jesus. Through television, online streaming, and Levi and his wife Jennie’s bestselling books, their ministry reaches around the world. They enjoy family days, getting outside, good coffee and sharing new experiences. The Lusko family includes one son: Lennox, and four daughters: Alivia, Daisy, Clover, and Lenya, who is in Heaven. Sometimes, without realizing it, we can find ourselves off track from the life we’re meant to live. Or, to put it another way, we wake up one day with a sense that we’re living someone else’s life; we’re in the wrong story. Maybe you might even say it’s a good story- it’s just not the right one for you. Most of us didn’t find a lot of clarity about ourselves- our identity and purpose especially, when we were younger. No one helped us wrestle with the big questions, but we had to make decisions about what to do with our lives nonetheless. So we went down a path hoping it would all work out. But what do you do when you discover that the path you’re on doesn’t lead you to the person you’re becoming, or it doesn’t help you express your deepest values? It’s those types of questions that remind me to talk with my wise friend, John Mark Comer. John Mark is the founding pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, a teacher and writer with Practicing the Way, and the author of six books: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, God has a Name, Garden City, Loveology, My Name is Hope, and his newest: Live No Lies. We just returned from a bus tour, visiting with friends from Tulsa to Charlotte. One consistent theme I heard from hundreds of conversations was about finding hope again after nearly two years of what our world has gone through. In the words of my friend, Max, “Don’t measure the height of the mountain. Ponder the power of the one who made it. Don’t tell God how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your God is. Your problem is not that your problem is so big, but that your view of God is too small.” Listen in for more of his wise words in this week’s episode. Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and bestselling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him. His newest book, You Were Made for This Moment: Courage For Today and Hope for Tomorrow (Thomas Nelson, September 2021), is a relevant and timely release for a society still reeling from racial divides, political strife, and a global pandemic. Whether you feel it acutely or not, today marks a new season. As the long, hot summer days wane, and the shorter, crisp days of autumn come upon us, it's a natural moment to pause and pay attention to the transitions of our lives, too. So, we wanted to put together a special episode this week that can help you take an appropriate pause and reflect on the bigger things that are happening. We're taking a look back, too, as we pull a few excerpts from previous conversations we've had on the podcast. We'd also like to extend to you a free month of our exclusive Bob Weekly content. All you have to do is click this link and sign up for a month of video teachings and a guided curriculum. It’s easy to get distracted by our circumstances- whether it’s how our body feels, an urgent problem to solve at work, a house filled with noisy kids, or the latest news headline. Our distractions are just that- distractions from what’s most important. So what does it look like to navigate through those distractions? We can’t control the world around us, but we can develop habits that help us stay focused and centered. There aren’t many people I’ve run across who do better at living a focused, centered life than my friend, Paul Burns. Paul Burns is a believer, builder, maker, dreamer, husband, father and also happens to be a senior executive at Twitter. At Twitter, Paul helps brands, businesses and people see the power of conversation to change the world. Paul believes that when we begin to have more open, healthy and loving conversations (especially about the things we disagree on), we are one step closer to looking more like Jesus. When he's not at Twitter, Paul helps lead a non-profit organization called Matthew House where he helps inspire hope, restore dignity and empower independence for refugees around the world (matthewhouse.ca). Paul lives in Toronto with his wife Olivia and two boys Anderson & Wesley and can be found on Twitter and Instagram @paulburns Also on the episode: Producer & Co-host : Scott Schimmel The Dream Big Academy Living a focused, engaged life of love, adventure, and impact shouldn't be a mystery.
