We are recording today’s episode on marble, which is something we have absolutely loved doing in our projects. We talk about our dolce tray, which is this rounded marble platform used as a luxurious spot to place your desserts or gourmet bites. In this episode we talk about doors, which is a fun subject to discuss during this holiday season when front doors are so decorated and seen by those we care about. We had a listener send in a great question about doors and we wanted to answer and expand on this. We will be doing two parts to this episode and in this part, we’re going to talk about interior doors. Sophie asked what the do’s and don’ts are of interior doors, if single door panels are going out of style, what type of door style is timeless, and do they all need to be the same? So listen to this episode to get our take. Intro 0:00 Christmas season 1:00 Interior doors 12:30 See what we’re talking about on YouTube 15:00 Single panel door 22:45 Double panel door 27:10 Three panel door 30:35 Doors with glazing 43:20 Transoms 47:50 Door trim 50:55 Do’s and don’ts 54:50 Barn doors 59:30 “There are really these golden means to the weighted portion that you were just talking about. When we’re looking at door elevations and customizing them or picking them, your eyeballs naturally go to the one that feels the most balanced and has the weighted bottom,, and it has the hardware in the right spot. That’s a good door. If you don’t trust yourself, talk to somebody that you trust to look at the doors before you buy or build them.” 28:20 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. I just feel like this feels more permanent and it’s a more beautiful way to display it. So you know your lover, but I think it’s not only beautiful, but practical and it could hold something really precious to him.” 39:50 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we read over you guys’ questions that you have written in and we have gone through and tried to decide what would be the common good for everyone listening to know these answers. We’re answering 8 questions, with some having multiple layers within them, but we hope you enjoy and find useful what we have to say! Today’s episode is all about fireplaces and comes from a listener question we received, which asks “With regard to the cast concrete mantel that is often discussed, could you confirm whether this is just the top shelf of the fireplace, or the whole of the fireplace? And is it pre-colored, painted, stained, or left concrete gray?” Listen as we go into detail about the various aspects of a fireplace and getting the best design, making the right choices along your design journey. The bigger the fire box, the bigger the chimney, the more chimney pots. This is gonna give your house a really awesome, estate-like look, and it really does have to vent out the chimney.” 17:30 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We wanted to do this episode this week after a listener of ours asked “I’m a design obsessed homeowner in Denver planning to finish my basement in the next couple of years. An episode on basements would be amazing! Space planning, choosing finishes, features to include, etc.” We live in the West where we do a lot of basements, so with all our experience and expertise, we have a lot to say about this subject. We have a list of 6 things we’ve done in basements that we found successful and beautiful, so join us today to find out what those are and what we have to say! So this year we're doing something a little different. We’re taking our holiday episode and our listener questions episode and merging them together into one. We pulled everyone on our instagram feeds and this is what we got back. We got a ton and some we won't be able to answer, but we’re going to be answering a lot of them. You can also find a lot of answers to some of these questions last year/in our previous episodes. The first sign of the season 2:30 Listener questions during the holidays 7:20 Naked trees 8:35 The top of our trees 12:45 Standard, icicle colored, or other? 15:25 How to style a tree with eclectic ornaments 20:15 Incorporating family mementos to Christmas decor 26:45 Best ideas to stock the gift drawers 32:30 Toddler proofing 35:20 Keeping it elegant 36:50 “I also love the amber oil. They sell it at Ulta when you’re leaving the checkout, they also have it on Amazon. It’s the one perfume that I’ll wear. It’s 20 dollars, it rolls on, and it’s the one I get complimented on the most.” 34:00 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we talk about the trend of the year, which we saw coming down Runway for sure in 2024 and some in 2023, and it’s called the Color Drench. This episode will unpack what this is and where to do it, how to do it, how we’re doing it, and we’re gonna share 5 projects that have been shot. We’ve been practicing this for probably the last 9 years and we didn’t know what it was called back then, but now we do and it’s awesome. Halloween candy 1:00 The trend of the year 3:00 Our favorite colors and where to color drench 4:00 Is your favorite color best for wearing or just to look at? 8:00 The definition of the Color Drench 13:00 Locations for color drenching 23:30 A bedroom one of our designers did 27:00 The mud room, pantry, and butler’s pantry 34:00 Rachel and Drew Parcel’s library 41:20 “As color drenching goes well beyond the simple accent wall like a monochromatic fantasy, the trend is all about a full-on single hue explosion across all surface levels in a room. In addition to the walls and ceilings, many objects and insulations such as window treatments and light fixtures get the same color treatment. However, a single color treatment doesn’t mean monotony. When color drenching a room, many designers opt to play around with the paints’ finish, mixing them both gloss and matte across a variety of textures such as wood or plaster to create greater interest.” 13:10 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This is episode 3 in a 3 part series of us talking about wallpapers. This week we talk about the textured wallpapers and the grasscloths. There is a special place for grasscloths and however you want to think about it in your mind and apply it to your home, or multiple homes if you have them, we’re going to talk about that today. It is really dimensional and I don’t know how else to describe it, it’s almost leaf-like, but it looks like it bends in the back of her closet.” 10:35 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This is episode 2 in a 3 part series of us talking about wallpapers. Today we talk about patterns and what the most common things we see are, like the paisley pattern you saw everywhere back in the 90s, and then we also discuss murals and go over visuals, which you can totally go see yourself if you watch us on our YouTube channel. Patterns we just cannot do anymore 1:45 Patterns are less expensive than murals 8:45 Some examples of complicated installations 12:50 Kravit, a lovely client 21:00 Coastal contemporary house 26:50 Toile 28:20 Schumacher bathroom 30:00 “You can’t just measure the square footage and think like, OK that equals the amount of square footage that’s in this roll, especially with the pattern because there is a calculation of how much waste you need, dependent on the pattern. He can even give me a fast number because it depends on the pattern and the space and each time it’s different. Just know that you’re gonna have a lot of waste, but if you want it installed correctly, it’s part of the game to make sure it matches correctly.” 36:05 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We have a really fantastic set of episodes for you guys. This is episode 1 of a series of wallpaper episodes after we were working in the craftings segment of the podcast and realized there are so many ideas, thoughts, and things to unpack about wallpapers, so we’re breaking this up into 3 episodes: Murals, Patterns, and Textures. Those of you who have been wanting to get into the wallpaper scene are going to love this episode because we’re going to be sharing our favorite resources, including thoughts from our favorite wallpaper installer. We’re going to be sharing projects and showing the different types of papers to help you illustrate this, which you’ll be able to see over on our YouTube channel. Wallpaper is in 2:00 Our ideal scenes 5:30 Accent walls and what to do 11:10 Choosing the accent paint color 18:00 Great lines to use 21:00 Another great wallpaper 30:45 Gucci 34:55 Porter Teleo 41:20 “We would put our paint deck down on that sample from Gracie to choose the exact shade of blue to paint the moldings if you wanted that color to continue, if you were doing moldings with it. In the case of Rachel’s she has white moldings, but she also has white floral trees in this scene, so that looks really great. And then in Isla Rose’s bedroom, she has a white field, so we did white crown and base in this room.” 18:15 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we talk about one of the coolest projects we’ve ever done. We get a lot of inquiries from our listeners asking why we don’t talk about our own projects more, so today we decided to dive right in and give you a peek into what we have been working on at Alice Lane. This Capitol Heights project we’re doing is just happening to hit newsstands here in Utah and is getting published in Utah Style and Design, and it’s a project we are so excited about and proud of. Intro 0:00 The most nerve racking things we’ve committed clients to do 1:35 Our Capitol Heights project 8:30 The entry 11:30 The red library 19:40 Light switches 26:30 The dining room 27:10 Living room 30:00 “She just wanted a space where she could just sit, and there was no TV in there, but she could write letters, have a conversation, so we did this beautiful pullup table up to the sofa, and then there’s a lot of seating. You have a sofa, 2 beautiful chairs. It feels very much like a his and hers moment on the chairs, and then we have this beautiful mohair daybed kinda splitting the area with an antique rug.” 30:27 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today is gonna be the funniest podcast because we got a funny question from one of their listeners who wrote in and asked “Throughout your many years of working on residential projects, how do you see family portraits fitting into your interior design?” We have since discovered that we have some pretty strong opinions on this. We all grew up in a time when mothers only decorated in family photos and didn’t bother so much with other decorations. So in light of that, we will be sharing with you our strong opinions we have on this specific topic today. Intro 0:00 Least favorite dress code for family photos 1:45 How Sue’s mom displayed their photos 9:30 The entryway 20:00 Cori’s photo story 24:40 “I also really think that things are pretty if they’re in a slim wood frame, or in a beautiful silver frame, or like a ‘gilver.’ Golds are fickle, they kind of come and go, but that’s what I love about the crystal. It’s just so everlasting and it does disappear and will get along with the other ones if you’re really gonna layer it up.” 29:20 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We feel like most people love Fall time the most out of the 4 seasons because it’s just the perfect place for temperature, for gathering, it gets a little darker, the nights are more crisp, you can sleep with your window cracked, and it’s just a very romantic time. The smells, the sounds, the sights, everything just feels richer, and even the fashion with all the layers you can pull on, people can really dress in the Fall. In this episode we talk about our favorite Fall updates. We each have our things we do for our homes and also for ourselves to signal the change of the seasons, so we hope you can tune in and gain some great insights into what you could do for your own home. Today the Dear Alice trio talks about how to play up your strengths. Everyone has the things that they dislike about their homes, the things they could change, etc., but Dear Alice wants to flip that on its head and talk about the things that we all love, how to play to those strengths in our homes, and how as individuals can break those metaphorical walls down and really get to the base desires of what people want. Intro 0:00 Our super powers 2:00 Sue’s favorite part about her house 6:30 Cori’s strengths 11:00 Jess’s favorite parts of her house 14:00 You want a reaction 24:50 The entryway 26:20 Sue’s home and space planning 34:40 Cori’s powder bath 36:40 Jess’s primary bath 43:45 “It’s worth getting right because it’s an entry and it’s how people are going to experience coming to your home, or coming to a party and knocking on that door, and smelling honeysuckle, being in this cool little tunnel with a gate and this bright little door, or whatever your plans are for that. I just think it’s such a cool opportunity to take something that’s OK now but make it a strength.” 20:19 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today the gang is talking about those upgrades for a builder basic home. If you’re getting ready to build a home, you’re going to go with a big builder and he has a little center where you can pick out your paint, countertops and tile, and you only have a few selections. It’s like your build-a-bear. They get into how as designers they would “build the bear” or how they have in the past and how to work the system. Intro 0:00 The first time we owned a home or really invested 1:05 Cabinetry 9:20 The hood 16:00 Countertops 20:15 Custom counter edge 21:50 Lighting 24:40 Outlets 29:50 Fireplaces 32:30 Mirrors 36:40 The accent wall 38:20 The power of paint 40:25 Carpet pad 41:40 Appliances 43:30 Blinds 47:00 “In a builder basic home, you might have $10K or something. Do not spend your 10K on their bad lighting. You keep that, you pocket that, you put it into something else in the home, and then you just spend your own $10K wisely, and then you can add to that as you want to put more lights in the home.” 26:57 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. What to do with this great big wall. We get this question a lot where someone has a big wall and doesn't know what to do with it. In this episode the Alice Lane Trio talks about the built-ins, the big stairwell wall, the window wall, and the 5 different spaces in the home that we most commonly get asked this question for on how to address that big wall, what we do with it, and how we help direct our clients in what to collect, if they should do built-ins at all, or if they’re not a good candidate for some of these things. Favorite thing to collect during travels 1:05 Built-ins 12:25 The wall of windows 23:20 The 2 story fireplace 30:30 The wall behind the TV 37:45 The stairwell 41:05 “We buy a lot of beautiful, one of a kind antique rugs for the store and we have them framed. So be it in a real frame, or we have also have them raw hanging on the wall, and both are just so beautiful. It just gives this importance and craft to this beautiful art. These are hand done and some of them are hundreds and hundreds of years old, so it’s a nice way to mix up the medium on your wall and add a lot of interest and scale to these massive walls.” 45:54 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we are going to be talking about the most commonly asked questions from our listeners of Dear Alice. We have 4 questions that people keep asking, so we figured it would be easiest to just package it all into one episode and you can get all 4 of the answers here. Join us today to find out what those questions are and what we have to say! What we get asked the most in our personal lives 1:25 How to not go out of style 10:30 The most durable design choices that will last forever 18:40 How to help stretch a room 30:00 How to avoid being matchy matchy 33:00 “You’re not gonna fall for the trends, and I know there’s so much talk around trends because of TikTok, and now there’s micro trends and everybody’s exposed to so much now, but you can avoid the trends and stay tru to your personal style when you’re making these decisions when you look back in time.” 16:13 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today the trio talks about the hardest working space in the home, which is the command center. Not everyone has one, but it is a desire of all of our female clients. Often it’s a stay-at-home mom, or even the working mom at times, who needs a room where she can keep all her kids’ birthday invites, amazon boxes, school schedules, gifts, candles, shipping items, etc., and they dive into this exact subject today. Intro 0:00 We all need a command center 7:00 A great place for a lot of closed storage 11:45 The new build 13:45 Some fun examples 23:10 “In the new build, I would say that you’re gonna need a lot of closed storage. You can never have enough. You’ll want hidden storage to hide your tape, your gifts, your wrapping. The gifts because your kids are gonna come and try to find them, and it’s their birthday. You don’t wanna have to just be shopping the night before, right? Holiday gifts, all sorts of things, so I think hidden storage is really nice.” 13:48 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This week we are doing kind of a part 2 on Sue’s emergency remodel and we thought it would be fun to talk about some of the best ways to update an older home. We have remodeled a lot of homes for people and we feel like there is a lot of magic in the walls. It’s really fun to think of the story and the history, and to think about what to highlight and pull away from, and then see what they’re reacting to. It feels like a chemistry experiment, psychologically. When you buy a remodel, you’re buying inherited architecture, which some of it is good, but some of it is not so good, and so it’s really just trying to understand this whole process of putting your own stamp on it and what that will look like to make it feel more you. How to get started 4:30 Paint 8:00 Lighting 13:00 Overgrout, German Schmear 18:20 Railing 22:30 Work with us 30:30 “I’m thinking of more of a mid century, 1950s, 60s, 70s home stacked rock, I don’t know if that works. If it’s a home that’s trying to feel European or something like that, then I think the overgrout works on the exterior, but if it’s mid century, it’s probably not gonna translate the same.” 12:53 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today is the day that we walk you through Suzanne Hall’s hardcore emergency remodel. She had a nice spread for us this episode of CAD drawings, sketches, before pictures, budgets, and after pictures. Sue shares from start to finish the emergency remodel and you will know what it cost her in the end, what she got for her money, and how she got there. If you’re living in a home that you’ve wanted to maybe tweak or update, and you never got around to it, look at those with brand new eyes today as if you’re walking through a brand new house that’s not yours because we are going to go back in time and do that with Sue’s house. You can do a big design in a small space because it’s not as many square feet that you have to pay for. We are talking about French design this week in honor of the French olympics that are starting. We feel like all eyes are on France right now and we couldn’t help but get in the spirit of things by talking about French design. When it comes to French fashion, we all wanna be effortless like the French girl, so that’s what we wanted to talk about in this episode is how to translate that into interiors. Every client wants to feel some French in their space, so we’re breaking down 5 different things you can do to bring it into your home. Intro 0:00 If we were olympic athletes 1:30 French design 7:30 How French traditional differs from American traditional 9:20 French modern 14:45 Historic whites 23:40 French blue 27:45 Stone 29:45 Carved furniture 34:00 “There’s traditional, and then there’s modern, and then there’s a mix, which I think our favorite spaces have a mix. It’s the traditional with the modern layered on top of it and I think that’s what most people react to, is that tension.” 9:05 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This week we have a really fun guest on the show. She is someone that is known for mixing vintage with contemporary and her name is Ariel Okin and we talk with her about how she balances the old with the new. She is the founder of Ariel Okin Interiors, a full service design firm based in New York City. Her work has been featured in Arch Digest, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Domino, and Vogue, and she is the Editor and Chief of Fenimore Lane, an E-commerce and editorial website. Ariel hosts an amazing podcast called Talk Shop with Ariel Okin where she talks with some of the greats in our industry about design philosophies. Her style is feminine and traditional, grounded in historical elements while carrying a freshness that’s inviting and comfortable. Intro 0:00 Our signature moves that we look for as part of our work brand 0:45 Where she draws inspiration from 7:10 The origin of her love of vintage 10:45 Ariel’s formula 12:00 How much old is too much 13:20 Where to shop for vintage 15:00 Knowing when a room is complete 20:20 Pieces to start with 21:30 Dipping into her portfolio 24:00 The mud hall 30:50 Her podcast 33:00 “You have to shop around with vintage and antique. You have to physically go in and see it. You have to go into the shops. I think one of the most valuable pieces of advice that I’ve learned from chatting on our podcast too is you have to go out and shop in person. You have to touch the things, the fabrics, you have to sit on the sofas, feel the upholstery. Physically doing it is really important, especially and particularly with vintage.” 14:20 www.arielokin.com Instagram: @arielokin https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This week we are going to talk about the elements of a well designed patio. We wanna really help you and set the stage for what your exterior experience will look like, so that you can throw a party and it feels authentic to you. We’re gonna show you some of the base rules that we tend to, to figure out what your style is outside, rules that help you know what to do and how to buy, and then why it works and creates this backdrop. This topic came to us after we were asked live by someone “OK, on outdoor spaces, do you buy the whole set, or do you kind of do it like the interior and mix and match?” So we thought it would be great to dedicate a whole episode to this topic and help you plan out your patio. Intro 0:00 Favorite seasons 0:30 Iron or wicker anchor pieces 11:00 Light vs dark wicker 18:30 Color of cushions 19:45 Jute rug 23:40 Pots and garden stools 26:45 The umbrella 32:00 “I feel like the longer I do design, the more I’m starting to really love the editor’s eye of restraint. Pulling back. Not being such a decorator that I’m trying to really mix and max to come up with some special formula that’s so tricky. I feel like the landscape is the hero in so many of the projects that we get to work on.” 11:54 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. It’s something we teach and preach. Something we’re known for, and take pride in! Scale is a signature feature of the Alice Lane look, and yet…sometimes small and mighty wins the game. Join Jess, Suzanne and Cori as they flip through the Alice Lane portfolio to explain when & why to play it small…for a really smart, well-designed look. The tile drawings are all drawn in CAD. Every single thing is specified, we've got finish schedules, so you’re gonna wanna see examples of what that looks like and know that the work your designer is doing is something they can hand off to their subs that they can go off and use these drawings to work with.” 13:55 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity https://www.alicelaneinteriordesign.com/interior-design-service-podcast-campaign https://alicelanehome.com/pages/home-furnishing-podcast-campaign News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Come to bed! It’s the primary piece in the primary room of the home, and it deserves your best attention. This week on Dear Alice, we take on a viewer question about how to shop for a great headboard, in the face of all the trendy options. Winged, curved, low or four-poster…Jess, Suzanne and Cori breakdown your options, and share what they consider when giving clients the bed of their (sweet) dreams! Intro 0:00 Never would I ever 1:00 Trying to choose new king sized bed and what’s on trend 8:40 The long headboard 14:00 The 4 poster 22:00 Winged beds and curved beds 26:00 “So these are the things you want to avoid if you are buying a bed today because those were trending pretty hard at the time and you wanna look back and like something that you would have liked a decade ago, when it comes to your bed. I just feel like there’s just some universally beautiful things that you could get today, which would be at least a 60 inch high headboard, right? Not have too severe of a wing, but still a wing is pretty if you’re a traditional.” 28:08 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today’s topic comes from one of our listeners who said “I’m a huge fan, business owner, and designer in the events world. You 3 care about details with the same passion that I do. It’s so refreshing. Thank you for sharing the love and importance of design and function, especially in the home. We are planning a Summer trip to Park City and I would love your suggestions on favorite antique stores or galleries to visit while we’re in Utah. Of course we’ll be stopping in at Alice Lane while we’re there too.” in this episode we unpack this and revolve the whole podcast this week around this because it’s a great topic we think our listeners should know more about. This week we are going over our best, boldest spaces again, which is a continuation of our previous episode from last week. If you head on over to YouTube and find the “Alice Lane Home Collection” channel, you’ll be able to see a lot of the things we’re talking about to get a better understanding of these visuals we describe. The space isn’t like too big that you can’t stand on that railing and check yourself out and stuff. Anyway, mirrors are the greatest trick that y’all can incorporate.” 10:44 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. You guys really wanted to know about the boldest spaces we’ve done, so this week we’re doing a deep dive on those spaces and how we got there. We sometimes talk about a project where we learned this or that on, but we got to go back through the Alice Lane books and really examine some of our greatest projects and if you visit our YouTube channel “Alice Lane Home Collection”, you’ll get to see some of the beautiful images we have for those projects. Intro 0:00 To The Trade program 2:20 A 5 year long project, 30,000 square feet 9:30 A remodel we’ve worked on recently, 40,000 sq feet 19:00 A current Dallas project 31:10 The kitchen 39:00 A geometric 46:30 “Here’s 40,000 square feet of home, there’s sitting areas everywhere and everybody just can’t wait to show you the chandelier room at the end of this house, and you go in there and you’re like ‘Oh here, have a seat, sit down, and experience it.’ and he pictured like 4 or 5 breakout conversations going on and just like kind of a hum of people talking, and it happens. You gravitate towards these awesome spaces and that’s where you wanna stand and be. It's an instant party. It tells you what the room can be. There's no other way to say it: the chair is the hero in every space. So, now that you know how we really feel...let's talk chairs! I can face the fireplace and talk to a friend, or I can look at the view, or I can go look at the game. You can be in charge of what you’re looking at and I think it’s just soothing. This week we are super excited to share with you our podcast we did with Annie Meyers-Shyer, who is a force of her own. She is in the middle of a remodel originally built from a well known architect, Gerard Colcord, and it’s a 1940’s Pennsylvania Dutch style home. She’s in California and following her journey has been such a fun pastime. Annie is not a self-proclaimed interior designer, but she’s really treating this project like she is and it’s fun to watch and see her audience get involved as she takes this remodel step by step in the one million decisions that you have to make when doing a remodel. Join us today for this exciting conversation! Annie’s Mother’s Day question 8:50 Developing her style 12:45 Living in a home with little boys 23:00 Growing up in Hollywood on sets 26:10 Starting the Instagram account and describing her style 31:30 What decisions have really excited her 38:45 “My goal with our home is that it feels like us, like a young family who lives there. There aren’t gonna be formal rooms, I hope all of our rooms are used. We are definitely a family who loves comfortable things, so deep sofas and cozy rooms, and my kids' rooms are going to be colorful because they’re colorful, and the rest of the house less colorful. I love sort of a calm palette. I’m very into the color yellow, there’s a lot of yellow in this house–very happy.” 32:35 @thisoakhouse https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This week we’re doing a fun episode because this is that time of the year when many of us are craving that desire to refresh our living spaces and make things feel like a blank slate. We’re trying to figure out what we need to do to give our home some rebirth without burning it down and rebuilding a new house. Cori suggests a great idea, which is bringing out your collections and putting them on display to give your space a fresh touch while also putting that collection of yours to good use. Intro 0:00 A fun design challenge 4:45 Bringing out your collections to display 11:20 A new rug/runner 13:20 Do some painting 14:50 Art 19:00 Update the first thing your eye sees 21:40 “Update the first thing your eye sees when you walk in a room. I think that is your first impression, and so I feel like you’re gonna get a lot of credit for it because if you can walk in and see something different, that’s gonna do the most work for you if you’re not in the mood to rearrange your entire house.” 21:40 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. On today’s episode we’re gonna take the intimidation out of a fun spring task and help you create front porch planters that wow. We have a very special guest on the show, Becky Nyman, who is Sue’s go-to person whenever she has any questions on gardening and plants. She’s a master gardener who has owned her own businesses and has been in the space for over 30 years. This time of year you see a lot of women dragging their pots into the nursery or garden shop to help them get their porch planters potted. Becky is gonna teach us how to make these decorative planters porch worthy. Intro 0:00 Meet Becky 2:20 Picking your pot 5:55 How deep the soil should be 13:00 Paying attention to the standup tags 19:10 Do what is pleasing to the eye 26:00 Different combinations 30:00 Favorite spiller 35:30 “Picking your pot is probably the most important thing that you want to do. You want to pick a pot that has drainage in it. Water can kills your plants faster than anything, and a lot of people don’t realize that. Overwatering kills plants faster than letting them dry out.” 5:56 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. “How do you help clients make design decisions?” “Are built-ins always a good idea?” “Can you help me decorate around my short ceilings?” On this episode of Dear Alice, the hosts circle up to answer the latest batch of listener questions, and - spoiler alert! - there are some good ones. Join Jess, Suzanne and Cori for your favorite conversation of the week! Like right now, my ceilings are all the same color, whatever’s happening on the wall of that room. So in my public areas, they’re white. My floor is white and the ceiling’s white, it’s all the same finish, so it just feels continuous. There’s no stopping and starting. It really stretches the eye and kinda fakes it out that I’m not being drawn to a contrasting line or a colored wall is meeting up with a flat white on the ceiling. This week we have Rob Corcoran on the podcast, who is a real estate expert and has been a resident real estate agent for 24 years. One of our most successful podcasts of 2023 was one where we had a real estate expert come on, so we felt it would be great to do it again as people love it. The market is constantly changing, so Jess called Rob. He built a high end boutique that he sold in 2015 and kept the relocation division of the company, and then founded Influence Relocation, which has now expanded to over 50 markets across the USA from Miami to Alaska. Intro 0:00 Buyer confidence and the housing market right now 1:55 Market trends and economic indicators 5:00 Rates and credit 11:00 Can young people afford a home? 14:00 Do we still see mega mansions? Or smaller? 19:50 Landscaping 25:30 Top buzzwords, home offices 27:30 Staging 29:45 A seller’s or a buyer’s market? 32:15 Pricing a home or a lot 35:40 Buy a renovation or not? 40:00 Does making your home your own make it hard to resell? 44:10 Is investing in a home as a 2nd or 3rd home a good option right now? 46:15 Are Airbnb’s still a good investment? 55:00 “You should never buy a home if you only plan on owning it for less than 5 years. So if you plan on buying a home and only being around for say 3 years, I would advise you probably not to purchase. You could get bitten to shorts on that if you need to sell or get relocated by your company, whatever happens in your life, the odds are you might be paying to get rid of your home.” 49:40 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this week’s episode we are doing re-upholstering or refinishing vs buying new. This is an age-old debate where some people don’t think it’s worth going through the trouble of refinishing old items, but others see it as an effective way to make their items look new while also preserving maybe some of that vintage touch said item might convey. Don’t think you’re doing this to save money, but rather to preserve an older item that has special meaning to you. Intro 0:00 Re-upholstering vs buying new 3:25 Fabric prices for upholstery 8:30 There are ranges in cost 15:40 A time the investment was worth it 20:00 “It adds up with all of our projects. Once you really stare at the numbers, it just all adds up, so just know that you’re gonna spend more than you thought to cover everything, so just make sure it’s something you really, really want.” 11:44 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Tune in this week to hear us give answers to more listener questions! We have people asking about how they can improve the design of their front door and alter the side lights or windows, how to mix wood tones like in a bedroom or dining room, what the ratio of mirrors to art in a home should be, what to do about the finish for interior and exterior door knobs and hinges, and a few other fun questions. Join us today to hear what we have to say! Intro 0:00 Level up your front door 11:10 Dos and don’ts of mixing wood tones 16:30 Ratio of mirrors to art in a home 21:00 Finish for interior and exterior door knobs and hinges 24:15 Built-in shelves and coloring 27:30 Display your kids artwork 34:00 Biggest misconceptions or blindspots in purchasing home furnishings 38:10 “It depends on your preference operationally too, like if it’s something that you’re just gonna swing open and you never use that, except when guests come over and you’re using the mudroom entrance, and you just want it for aesthetics, beautiful. But just know that one is usually gonna stay closed and one is gonna be operative, and is that wide enough for people to come through? Or do you have to swing them open both times?” 12:24 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This week we wanted to talk about some trends we saw pop up in an Elle Decor article and we feel like we wanna fight back on some of these things they say are a big deal. So we’re going to break down this article and break down/debunk, or agree with some of these kitchen and bath trends. All of us, both who are hosting and listening to the podcast need a moment to figure out what’s true and what’s not because sometimes people are reporting on things and maybe have only asked one source, so we want to make sure that we are giving you our best information based on what we’re seeing since we’re on the front lines of design. We want you to be well equipped before you go and make these really expensive decisions based on what you read in an article. Intro 0:00 Breaking down the article 9:00 High gloss walls vs texture 10:10 Brown 13:15 Terracotta takeover 15:20 Is bouclé here to stay? 20:00 Curves meet straight lines 23:30 High tech lighting 26:50 Alternative materials will be the standard 29:40 Revival of Victorian era details 33:30 Layered understated lighting 36:40 Warm rich colors 37:50 High drama marble and stone 38:40 Butler’s pantry and storage galore 39:55 Outdoor kitchens in connection to nature 42:30 Induction cooktops 44:30 “There’s nothing more romantic than a pizza oven like, I think they’re so cute and it’s so fun to make homemade pizzas with your kids, it’s so much fun” “We did it last night. We just got a pizza oven and have just been using it way too much. It’s like making dinner, what we have to do anyway, but then it’s an activity at the same time. It’s memory making.” 43:58 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we are talking about how you can find your own niche and cultivate your personal style. This is a podcast we feel everybody wants to know as they’re trying to figure out who they are when they’re trying to make these massive decisions for a home, whether you’re a new build, remodel, or maybe you’re just furnishing, it really needs to tie back to who you are, how you use that space, what nostalgic strings you want to pull, depending on if you really are sentimental. We keep seeing this topic pop up for people everywhere and have even listened to a couple of podcasts on this in fashion to really understand what some of the points are that people are making to help us cultivate our own style, so this is gonna be a fun one. 0:00 Intro The age of developing opinion 4:20 Feeling like you have imposter syndrome 27:00 Putting together an outfit for fashion week 31:45 Cori’s method 37:00 Who do you aspire to be? 40:45 Do what you want and don’t care about what Karen thinks 46:10 “So I go to the plumbing store and I’m like ‘OK, I like that suite, I think this is the finish I’ll go with.’ and then I put that actual faucet in there with the tile, with the cabinetry that I’m thinking and I’m like ‘Yep, that’s good. Send that over to the cabinet maker.’ and then I’ll get my hardware. It’s really easy. I’ll always try and figure out my art because that’s important to me too because I know that’s a part of my style. That’s a big North Star for me.” 30:20 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we are going to put all the fundamental design principles into one episode. We often give you guys little bits of information, such as you should hang your chandelier over your dining table, this height to this height, here’s the range. We thought we should do an episode for you guys where when you are finally ready to make a remodeling move, or maybe you’re rearranging your furniture this year, you’ll know what to do with spacing and dimensions. You’re probably all going to be working on some little project because you love interiors. So do we. We’re all ready to make a move, which may just be moving furniture from one room to another, but we’re going to give you dimensions that you need to know. Make sure to bookmark this episode because you’re going to want to come back to it in the future again and again in your lifetime to make sure you’re getting the spacing right. All of your pathways need at least 36 inches 7:30 Cocktail table - 18 inches 12:15 Rugs 14:15 TV viewing heights 15:40 Kitchen 18:30 Bathrooms 29:50 Lighting 37:15 Fireplaces 43:20 Art 46:00 Drapes 49:15 “Otherwise the cocktail table just feels like it’s out in the middle of the room and nobody can use it for what it’s intended for…Or you have to stand up to walk forward while you’re crouched to put your drink down, and your quads are burning by the time you get to the cocktail table! No really, you go in those homes and the cocktail table is sitting on a 4x6 rug in the middle of the room, and you’re like ‘What!?’ If you learn nothing else today, at least learn where your cocktail table goes.” 13:13 Learn more about your ad choices. This is a topic that came in from one of our listeners, which we thought was a great question and perfect to focus on in this episode this week. We’ve been at this for 4 years and feel like we’ve covered it all, but we’re having such a good time that we wanna keep the party going, so feel free to send us any questions, topics, or even guests that you want on, which you can send to [email protected]. Intro 0:00 Our free design service and a review 1:00 What are our favorite small spaces? 3:10 Painting stencils 8:30 Be insanely interesting in a small space 16:00 What to do with the ceiling 24:00 Real living finishes 32:00 Hardware 37:10 The mirror’s edge 42:40 Opinionated marble 43:30 Human element and displaying your collections 48:45 “The next thing we have is real living finishes. This is the most luxurious thing. We’re talking about using real stone, real marble. We’re not using porcelain countertops that have marble stamped onto them so that you think that they’re marble and when you feel them, you’re like ‘Somethings not right…’ Whenever you can use an honest material, real stone, real wool carpet, real countertop material, real flooring material, real wood…Honest materials are gonna make your space look more luxurious.” 32:05 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We have a very special guest with us this week named Krissa Rossbound, who is a veteran and the Senior Style and Design Editor for Traditional Home Magazine, and we are giddy to have her here. We discuss topics such as how the current state of this country and the education system doesn’t favor art or prioritize helping people develop their own personal style, so it’s a journey on which one has to go the extra length in order to discover for themselves. Listen to how we discuss traditional design and how to go all about it in today’s market. Intro 0:00 Working at Traditional Home 1:00 About Krissa and her journey 4:00 Cultivating personal style 7:10 What separates Trad Home from other publications 18:00 Difference between publication print and online presence 23:20 Being featured in print 25:35 The white kitchen 33:00 How far ahead traditional home is working 37:20 Accessing different magazines 42:00 Email for Traditional Home 45:50 What people should spend their money on 51:40 Finding a great photographer 60:30 “Something that I’ve learned to do over time is really edit myself and learn to pause for a moment, enjoy what I’m looking at, realizing I really don’t have to take this home with me. I’m going to look at it wherever it’s displayed and maybe take a picture of it and remember it that way, but I don’t have to bring it home with me because you do that and then sometimes it just doesn’t work, or you didn’t really actually want it, and I think that hearkens back to that idea of understanding your personal style.” 13:25 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we are doing listener questions, which we always enjoy because we get to see how you guys are living, what problems you’re facing, and we get to help you answer them, which is kind of why Dear Alice was born. Dear Alice is our take on Dear Abby, which is an old advice column that was written, and we are actually doing that exact thing right now for interior design. You guys are sending in pictures now, which really helps us to better know how to be more informative. Intro 0:00 The worst date we ever had 1:30 Keep things cohesive or refinish? 9:40 Beautifully designing entry and foyer 12:25 Helping the living room warm, inviting, and functional 17:20 Brazilian Cherry flores and bleaching 24:10 Brand and color of Jessica’s siding shingles 30:45 How to add more romance to your home 33:00 “When you do refinish the floors on the upper level, they might be different colors because the years, and the sunshine, and everything on those 2 inch floors maybe two years earlier, because maybe you’re not gonna get to that renovation stairs for a couple of years, but it’s on another plane, it’s on another level. You’ve gotta get it right when you’re doing it because nobody’s gonna go back and refinish floors.” 11:40 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we have guest Marvin Wilkinson who has the most fabulous store in the Denver Design District and Scottsdale. He has just the top shelf brands and with him you can find a secret tunnel into a magical world of offerings only offered to designers and we consider Marvin as ‘El Presidente’ of this world. We know him because he is one of our reps and educates us designers on what’s newest, what’s best, textiles, wallpapers, de Gournay, etc. Marvin is an artist at heart, a curator of beauty, and incredibly dynamic, so Suz insisted that he be on the podcast because people are gonna eat him up. Intro 0:00 About Marvin 1:00 How he started 5:30 Where to save and where to splurge 11:00 The difference between Gracie and De Gournay wallpaper 13:45 Favorite up and coming brands 17:40 The best show 19:10 What’s new, what’s next 22:30 Developing your relationships 32:30 Follow through and follow up 35:45 What have the past 30 years taught you? 38:45 “I really need to hear what you are looking for instead of me just automatically thinking I know what you’re looking for. I think that’s really important for working with a design community. I think just being able to communicate properly and pull stuff out of other people and try to get their information and what their needs are, I think is really important.” 33:02 johnbrooksinc.com @johnbrooksinc https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We’re gonna fight it out a bit today on this podcast episode. This is a continuation of our episode from last week and it’s just our listener’s comments when we polled our Instagram audits. We wanted to get to these since you guys took the time, so that’s what we’re doing today. We discuss the various designer styles you see here in Utah and which ones we agree with or do not agree with, but also there’s a lot of good in having variety. “Be effortless. Be believable…” “Don’t try so hard. I think that goes for anybody.” Intro 0:00 Design services 1:00 Best meal 5:10 Other designers’ styles in Utah that we agree or disagree with 8:15 90s oak cabinets in the kitchen and not looking 90s 14:10 Where to put marble 18:30 Where to save vs where to splurge 22:45 Open floor plan and tall ceiling vs cozy and separate spaces 30:55 Karate chopping pillows 37:05 “Today the cabinetry goes to the ceiling, or there’s a soffit with crown molding, but there’s no longer the dust collection. Nobody has done honey oak since the 90s. I don’t know if it’s gonna come back or not. Our oak came around again and it came more grayed, or ceruse, or toned down, but we have better lacquers today that don’t yellow the woods like they did in the 90s.” 15:01 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Your hosts here on Alice lane have different opinions from each other. We’ve gotten some questions in and we find that we feel differently about these things and felt like maybe we should fight it out for you guys. We decided to just let it out and see what happens and we will still remain friends afterward. One example of something we talk about is having the TV above the fireplace and Cori says he has his TV above the fireplace, which Sue and Jess definitely disagree with style wise, but respect that he has made that decision. Intro 0:00 An awesome review and most embarrassing moment 1:20 The TV above the fireplace mantle 12:30 Theater rooms 18:00 Kids sleeping with parents in bed 24:50 Pools and jacuzzis 28:10 Kids toys 33:30 Living room 40:00 Engineered hardwood 45:10 “I personally have a sand and finish floor meaning we went and bought the wood planks, white oak, installed them all, water popped the grains, stained it, all the different layers of lacquer, the tedious process of doing a sand and finish floor…now everything is perfectly engineered. You get a perfectly finished, baked product in a factory where you don’t have to do it on site with all the chemicals.” 45:20 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we are talking about the 5th wall, which we define as the ceiling. It’s a controversial thing because some people consider the floor to be the 5th wall and the ceiling as the 6th, but that’s not what we think. The ceiling is something we strongly feel can really set rooms apart in design, and create a lot of energy and magic surrounding what’s happening up above the head. Join us as we discuss the various ways we’ve incorporated the 5th wall into our many projects we’ve done over the years. Worst or funniest gift you’ve been given 2:45 The 5th wall 12:00 Aligning with existing architecture 21:50 Paint 24:25 Finish work 26:15 Barbie house project 31:20 “We had ceilings with a lot of eaves in it. This is Tan France’s closet and after setting this for quite some time, you can see the wall height didn’t start until way down here, like 2 and a half feet, so we’re all pitches and it only made sense to treat the ceiling like the wall and wrap that entire room in stripes. It felt tented, and then we were able to bring in a mirror that went 2 stories up from the stairwell and bounced back all of that around the space.” 18:48 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We have a question that catapulted into us making a whole podcast about this topic, which reads “Hi, long time listener to your podcast. Could you please do a session on lighting, like finding pieces that speak to each other room to room, dealing with custom shades. Do all lamps have the custom shades? For example, I have 4 lamps and they all have a beautiful fermoie shade that flank the perimeter of the room, but when I bring lamps into the center, I was going to coordinate, or even juxtapose that with a modern lamp. Best ways to wash out art with light when mounted picture lights just don’t work, but you also don’t want your ceiling to look like Swiss cheese from recess lighting?” The worst compliment we’ve ever received 2:45 I love lamp 10:00 Height 16:30 Washing art 18:50 Vendors and whiteness of shade 28:40 Different types of lamps 31:50 The dining table 41:00 “The ideal shade is a natural linen, like probably a more off white or bone colored linen. That’s more beautiful than a natural paper shade because the paper shades kind of get burnt and get hot spots over years. It’s just not long lasting and if you’re paying a lot for a lamp it’s frustrating to have the shade start to show those warm spots on it…we use a place in Salt Lake City called the Lamp Company and they do custom lamp shades for us.” 29:24 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Design is a wild and complicated business to get into. Of all the designers out there, somehow we all end up doing it differently. In the school of design, they don’t teach you that your business should be done a certain way, they just teach you the art of design and the different types of design: commercial, residential, etc., or little classes that teach you how to do things like purchase orders, sales estimates, how to work with vendors, and internal trade secrets that you’ll need to know, but how to run a business is much more broad and really just comes down to the individual and their way of doing things. What we’re watching right now on TV 2:00 What is the business of design like after college? 8:00 Stay busy 19:00 A lot of ways to do things 22:20 Everyone wears a lot of hats 25:00 Where will you be the most satisfied? 30:25 Self evaluation 32:20 Attach yourself to people you admire and respect, and you must be passionate and confident in your style 34:30 “I do think that those with a good attitude are also grateful, and when you’re grateful, I feel like you’re anxiously engaged. When you’re not grateful, you’re like ‘Oh, lucky you. You get me.’ But those that are grateful work better with other people. They’re humble, and they learn faster. If you can be humble, you’ll learn a lot faster. You’ll get to the finish line on any project you’re working on a lot quicker, when you’re grateful.” 21:44 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We were discussing this topic and when we started listing these out, we realized it’s proof that we lived. We leaned hard into a trend, it’s the Asymmetrical haircut, and a part of us is like “No, respect that girl that was just trying her darndest!” But was it a good idea? Probably not. Listen in as we tell about our various design decisions we made early on that we later came to realize was a mistake. Intro 0:00 What we’re obsessed with lately 1:00 Our design regrets 7:55 Sue’s design regret - grout 8:25 Bigger laundry room 11:10 Brass fixtures 14:40 The exterior finish and paint color 16:10 Pergola 19:00 The range in Cori’s house 22:20 Garage storage 28:40 Crooked mantle 37:20 “I feel like we wanted to do this episode because I don’t know if somebody maybe asked us to do it, but just to illustrate we all have regrets. Those of us who do it professionally, we still have mishaps. We trust the system too much because we do it all day, and then we work too fast, and then we forget something, or a few of these things where we’re saying to just fix it right the first time.” 38:45 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We’ve got another listener questions episode for you guys today that we recorded back in September, and we’re so excited to be able to answer a lot of the inquiries we’ve gotten from you guys. We get a lot of questions from you who listen to this podcast and if they’re not big enough to cover a whole episode, we will compile them along with other questions that won’t take as long, and then we combine them all into one podcast episode, so listen in this week to hear what we have to say in regards to what you have asked. Achieving a balance in life 1:20 How do you break into interior design without a degree? 8:30 How to design for your home when interior is different than exterior 12:30 Jess, how is your outdoor lighting holding up? 15:15 Finding your passion for interiors after college 18:45 De-90’s your home without removing the positives 23:25 Front porch styling through the seasons 33:00 Furniture, rug, fireplace, and running parallel 40:30 “If you have a great view one way or the other, that’s where I would orient my furniture. Towards that, and then do something beautiful on the mantle, but it doesn’t have to be the thing that you’re looking towards in the corner. I think I would still square it off in a rectangular room because then you’re gonna add non-directional items, you’re gonna add a table, on the sides of your sofa. You’re gonna do other things to soften this really angular space with some rounds in there.” 41:57 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Sue and Jess went to High Point Market and got to see what is up and coming for Spring of 2024. This is fashion week for interior designers and much like some people go to New York, or Milan, Sue and Jess go to North Carolina and they get to see what all the furniture makers are up to. The furniture makers are making new silhouettes, using new fabrics and finishes that are gonna be available for this coming Spring, and they’re just kind of seeing what’s new in lighting, rugs, furniture, case goods, mirrors, accessories, and everything across the board. They get to go and buy for this next Spring and with this episode they just want to dig into what they’re seeing in the interior trends so you know what’s coming on the horizon. It’s a flat sandal that laces up, it’s got these two really cute discs on the side, I think it sold out everywhere, but women would wear just like a light blue Levi’s with this red strappy sandal and get so much credit.” 42:25 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This podcast started with a great question in which Sue decided she would write a finals paper for us so that we could then record a podcast for you. We are excited to share this podcast as you guys will be on this journey with us, because we are learning with you at the same time. We received a question from one of our listeners, Monica, that said “I love the timeless yet trendy look of checkered or diamond floors. I’m planning on installing it in my new home, however I’m stuck on scale. Is there a rule for pairing tile size with square footage of a room? I would love for this to be addressed in an episode, thank you.” What’s going great for us and what’s a stumble 1:00 Checker board is everywhere 15:00 Figuring out your border rather than the scale 20:20 Graph paper 27:00 “I feel like all 3 of us were the check. We’re gonna be justified with the wall. We’re not gonna throw it on the diagonal, right? I don’t consider myself to be formal or fancy enough and I honestly hate it when people take their shoes off at my house. I’m like ‘Oh no, just please stay comfortable.’ I don’t want anyone to feel like I’m overly fancy.” 30:25 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We are talking about our Dear Alice Live recap in this episode. We did a live event here in Draper, Utah and 50% of the people that came were from out of state, and then a lot of our attendees bought E-tickets and had so many questions, which we didn’t have time to answer nor did we even expect there would be questions at the end. We wanted to do an episode dedicated to all of those E-ticket questions and figured probably a lot of you would like to know those answers, so we’re gonna answer those questions here. We use spot tables a lot just next to a chair like a quick little pull up, often they can migrate. My kids pull them around all over the place because it’s easier for them to pll up and eat their Lunchable on, or whatever it is. They can just bring it over to this chair and put this drink on it while I’m reading this book.” 37:00 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this week’s episode we are talking about The Gift Guide, our favorite gifts to give, and who to give gifts to. Many of us are last minute kind of people, especially as creatives, and we wanted to talk about some methods or ideas that may help you, especially if you’re an overthinker and the kind of person that just wants to get that perfect gift for that special someone, such as your significant other, family member, best friend, or even coworkers. Creating a design Northstar is something we do for every client, so we’re gonna take you through how you do that in this week’s episode. We got a question from one of our listeners who is renovating a historic home built in 1790 in Hudson Valley, New York. She is in the middle of a major powder bath and kitchen remodel moving walls, placing windows, the whole deal. She asked how to avoid decision fatigue in these huge projects as she doesn’t want to make mistakes or regret choices. She has found that working with Pinterest and Pinterest mood boards has been helping, but she still would like to know how not to get burnout when making countless decisions over the course of a few months. Suzanne saw this great Instagram post from Lewis Howes that said “Advice from 40 year old me to 20 year old me: 5 things I wish I knew when I was 20.” We think this is a really good conversation to just talk with someone you’re close to or a teenager in your orbit that maybe doesn’t hear this from their parents, but are able to hear from someone they’re close to or look up to. We see a lot of homes in all the work we do and in some of the remodels there are some things that you’re just inheriting. When you purchase a home like this, you have to get really good at planning because it’s not inexpensive to redo the various things you want changed, but there’s a lot of architecture and a lot of things you wouldn’t do today, but they did yesterday. So now it’s your turn to make it right and we think the majority of people are likely in this position who are listening to our podcast right now, so listen in as we give our opinions and expertise on what you should do when you inherit architecture. We have a fun episode today, which is about finding something and saying if we would keep it or toss it. For myself, I’m not gonna buy any travertine, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s beautiful for myself or another client. If it was in somebody’s home right now, would I have them rip it out? One of the biggest questions we always get before we start any project is ‘What is always in and never out?’ We wanted to record a podcast sort of talking about those things, whether you’re living in a historical home, an older home, a 20-30 year old home, or a brand new build. What are some of the classic principles we are gonna talk about today that you aren’t going to regret in the future? That’s the ultimate question we wanted to dive into today and answer for you guys. Buying a home that has existed before 6:40 Thinking about the timelessness of Ralph Lauren 9:15 Painting an old antique piece 21:30 Real materials have staying power 27:10 The white kitchen 28:00 Windows 31:00 Anything that has meaning 33:35 Scale 40:45 Beautiful finish work 44:00 Mohair 45:00 “I think the one thing that we obsess over is scale. We always want to make sure to keep that Ralph Lauren Bee buzzing around in our head while we’re making stuff, and that small never equals greatness generally. Usually if you scale something really well, it’s gonna look generous, it’s gonna be gorgeous, it’s gonna feel estate quality.” “It’s gonna make a small space feel grander.” 12:18 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we will be answering a listener question that came in. Somebody wanted to know how to lean into an editorial element, or slap in the face if you will, and brought up that it seems like there’s a way to bring in black into an otherwise neutral space, so we decided to create an entire podcast episode out of it. The most editorial moments are when you can show something with an opinion or unexpected, and something that’s not too played out, or it’s not the same player as the rest of the pieces in the room. The most editorial moment is when you get that one funky chair that just goes with what the owners love. Giving the room that editorial element 9:45 Ways we’ve done it in our own homes 13:10 Solving a problem while out in the world 16:00 Bringing black into a neutral space 19:40 Mural patterns 20:50 Space planning 24:50 “We are emotional about our collections and we’re not necessarily curating them for a room, and we don't curate the room first, and then buy it. We’re slowly picking up this and that over the years and we don’t worry about where it goes. We worry about it moving us.” 14:17 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We are doing another episode on real estate because we had such a massive response to our last episode on real estate. You guys really want to know about this subject, so we said “Who else do we know that we could bring on Dear Alice?” and Jess thought she could bring on her brother, Jake Luekenga, who has been doing in sort of a rental situation where he had two rental properties and went on to build a dream home, and he has a carriage house currently that he rents out nightly and we are going to find out why he does that nightly as opposed to by the month. He built a vacation rental with partners, and now he’s building an entire development of fractional ownership and whole ownership properties. So we’re just going to unpack all of this and find out what Jake has learned and knows for all of us who love interiors. About Jake, Jess, and their family 2:10 His carriage house and home he lives in now 6:45 The location and rental 10:20 His vacation rental in Saint George 18:50 Is it worth it? 23:15 Fractional ownership 27:15 Next rental and development 30:35 Difference between fractional ownership and timeshare 33:20 How to choose a good location for real estate 40:35 “So with a timeshare you own the time. You do not own the physical property, but with a fractional ownership you actually own a piece of the property, a fraction of the property. What’s most common is they divide the property into one eighths and you get that piece of the pie. So you have a deed, it’s in your name, you can sell it when you want. ” 34:24 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. There was an article that came out from The Washington Post, which was titled “HGTV is making our homes boring and us sad, one study says.” It goes in to unpack that everybody is trying to make their homes these perfect places like you see on TV, and we all know that the home is often the biggest investment we make in a lifetime and our whole lives and the lives of those around us are tied up in our homes. So HGTV tells us that we have to make our homes the nicest possible and decorate it for the masses, and not our own happiness. Because there’s so much pressure to make our homes for the masses and maintain its value in the public eye, we might find there is much less of a personal touch to it. Our home is the place that we should feel the most comfortable. Join us for an Alice Lane event! 15:30 The HGTV article 19:45 Displacement of the professionalization of the home 27:15 The resale value of the home 37:45 “We don’t want our homes to look the same that we work on with the client because we want them to look like the client. We have to talk to them about who they are, what their origin is, where they went to school, what do their kids love? Those things are so vital in making the home successful because if it looks like me, cool if I’m moving in, but it doesn’t hold up and they won’t be happy. Our ultimate happiness comes when we can feel comfortable in our own place with our own people.” 30:00 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Cori had a question that kind of went along with a question from one of our listeners and we realized that maybe we haven’t talked about layering enough, which is kind of the super power when it comes to the styling portion of interior design. Really getting those layers dialed in is a really good storytelling piece, and it’s a great fashion piece. It separates the goods from the greats and gives the house a beat and soul, and when we walk through, like in a few show rooms, and it really puts us in awe, it’s because of layers and the styling is on point. In this episode we wanted to break down with our voices and not visuals, why and how to layer. Quantity and quality, quiet luxury 6:20 The TV wall 9:30 Flooring, rugs 12:40 Furniture layering 17:20 Layering shelves 24:45 “We know right now that publishers actually don’t want a lot of layers. We have a project that our design center just completed, which is actually right here in Utah, but we’re not going to say where the location is. You would think this house was in LA or Las Vegas with its really high end finishes and very contemporary, fashion driven, and opinionated. They had the greatest private fashion collection we have ever seen before, the closet being the biggest one we have ever done here at Alice Lane, but they are very private people, so we’re going to tell you what we saw and what we did on this episode today. Make sure to follow our Instagram to see the before and after! Dear Alice live event! 1:50 The Barbie dreamhouse 4:50 A fresh start 6:00 How it started 7:00 They wanted to host a lot of people 12:30 Dissecting their various rooms: the library 14:10 A project like none other 16:25 The backyard 22:20 The purple slab in the basement 31:30 The primary vanity 33:55 “We’re like, ‘Well what does she have in the pantry?’ because she has a plethora of everything. So we go in there, and I’m not kidding you guys, there are hot pink wine glasses, hot pink martini glasses, some sort of cool faceted tumbler that sits sideways, all branded ‘Barbie,’ and the glass is hot pink.” 20:45 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. All of us here at Alice Lane take luxury in doses, and Suzanne Hall is doing that this very moment as she is in the middle of her own remodel in her bathroom, creating achievable interiors on the fly. We get into different countertop materials that we like in addition to marble, as well as materials that we do not like so much. We suggest investing in the rug to really take that step toward luxury in your own home, or when working with a sofa, you can really up your game by getting great pillows. What is your favorite countertop material if you can’t choose real marble? 6:55 Defining luxury 14:50 How you can get luxury in doses in your home: invest in the rug 20:30 Getting a sofa and pillows 25:00 What Suzanne splurged and did not splurge on 34:00 Anything you have always wanted 38:55 “What does luxury in doses, or what does luxury in your house look like to you?” “I think I can answer it the same way that I was going to anyway, and that’s just fully expressing who you are and working towards who you are meant to be.” 15:30 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We had a listener question and they asked how Jess and Suz became such good friends, so we thought it would be really fun to focus on that story in this episode. We’ve had bits of this story come up throughout our podcast, but never all in one like this one today. Jess tells her story about starting Alice Lane Interiors and how it came about, and then how Suzanne came into the picture after they fired their first interior designer who just wasn’t working out. We used to move a lot of furniture to people’s homes and set it all up for them to see how it looked and usually clients would love it and take the deal, but every now and then we’d have someone who just didn’t like it and would send it all back, which was a big pain for us, but it was all part of the learning process. “Find people that you honestly love to work with, so that it doesn’t feel like work.” “Passion is contagious.” How the story began 1:20 Running our first store 7:45 Meeting Suz 9:20 Store first, design on the side 16:35 Books 20:45 Approvals 25:00 Meeting Cori 27:20 Finding great clients 33:00 “We had so much fun and we would just be in our heels and our dresses just scooting furniture and seeing what worked best, thinking about the person’s personal things and drawing, sketching things out, and it really became a design laboratory. We would work the floor and help people from 10-7, and then the doors shut down and it was like Cinderella’s mice just scurrying about trying to put together this thing because they’re coming into the store the next day and we’re gonna show them what we’ve put together for them.” 7:28 https://www.amazon.com/stores/AliceLaneHomeCollection/page/C8A94120-E3F2-4895-BB87-CB4E71C9232B?ref_=ast_bln https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. One of our listeners asked the question of how someone can lean into the Spanish Colonial style of home, so we have created this podcast for those who have moved into a decades old home and aren’t sure about how to lean into its style. We want to help you know what to keep and preserve, and also what to change to fit your style. We wanted to do a quick little history lesson and talk about 5 principle things that are included in Spanish Colonial architecture, and then why certain celebrity estates are successful and why each of them look different because they each have a fresh new take. Leaning into the Spanish colonial style 5:10 What is Spanish Colonial architecture? 8:15 Wide exterior and interior walls 9:25 Flat roofs with clay tile 11:55 The wooden beams 14:40 Small windows with wooden shutters and central courtyards 18:10 “Spanish Colonial Revival is most often used to describe homes developed in the early 20th century in the US or Mexico. Houses in this style Incorporate key elements of Mediterranean architecture, especially bright white exterior walls while also taking inspiration from Mexican, pueblo, and moorish design styles. The architectural style represents an adaptation of Spanish missions and Mediterranean style homes designed to keep the interior cool even on hot days. In the United States, Spanish revival homes are most popular in Florida, Texas, California, and the Southwest, including Arizona and New Mexico.” 8:20 Learn more about your ad choices. We wanted to discuss something that pops up a lot in the different magazines we’re reading, social media, and we feel like we need to talk about and unpack it here. The trend, or lifestyle, is called quiet luxury and some people refer to it as stealth wealth, which means you’re really quiet about your luxury and actually looking like millionaires, and not trying to drip so hard or wearing all the labels all at once. There’s a way to use the right materials in a way that isn’t shouting flashy, but still shines excellence and luxury. Quiet luxury 5:10 Looking great without having to say what you’re wearing 11:45 Wearing things longer 18:10 Taking quiet luxury into the home 21:15 Beauty and wellness 30:00 “Hallmarks, such as classic, well made, muted staples that don’t shout out their provenance, also known as ‘classics’... It’s about mixing an eye watering expensive coat with baggy vintage jeans, wearing multiple shades of beige all at once.” 13:30 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We often have questions from our listeners about color, so we figured it was time to do an episode dedicated to this topic and put out a post to our followers to send in any questions they had about wall color in particular and we had so many questions come in. It’s easy to follow trends and just do what everyone else is doing, but it doesn’t matter what someone’s top favorite color is because it could look terrible on you and you might hate it. This is the year of introspection and understanding what you’re drawn to, how you dress yourself, and figuring out who you are. This is something that we are all very passionate about here at Alice Lane, which is understanding these things while also being current about where art and design is in popular culture. Color 6:40 The right things to do moving forward 9:00 Developing an entire home palate 11:00 Favorite paint colors 22:05 Dark and moody colors 33:35 Why some people are drawn to warm or cool tones 38:45 “There’s a reason why we’re exiting out of this cool, sad gray because we want to be happy. Covid was really hard on everybody, so this is your time to re-energize yourself because color is energy 100%.” 11:54 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Sue had this epiphany the other day when we were driving down the road and talking about what to talk about on the podcast and she said she had a juicy one. Taste is an ever evolving thing that we should be feeding, which will continue to change and be molded over time as we are exposed to different things. Taste is subjective and really just uniquely developed for every person. We are asked to design people’s homes and interpret them through our lens, taking what taste notes we have on what pairs nicely with their story and creating an environment where they feel at home and that their taste has been reflected correctly. “Good taste is better than bad taste, but bad taste is better than no taste.” How to shape your taste 3:30 Your taste evolves 7:25 Genius creates and taste preserves 8:50 Growing up and developing our own tastes 16:15 The importance of finding people who support you 22:55 You don’t need a lot of money to have good taste 24:50 “Just because you’re speaking in absolutes doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re right. I think that portrays confidence and people mistake confidence with having good opinions, and those are not necessarily synonymous with each other, although I think you have to have a level of confidence to be able to build your good taste.” 5:31 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we’re doing a little podcast on metal finishes mainly from a listener question that we had come in, but we’ve also had a few of these hot topics in our own minds that we felt like we should solve, so we’re putting them all together and calling it ‘Metal Finishes.’ One of our listeners wanted to know our favorite finishes for cabinet knobs and poles, saying ‘polished nickel for plumbing? Thanks for any advice.’ We’ve been saying that silver is king from here on out, which we’re seeing in fashion and homes are following suit. Metal finishes 11:05 Cabinet knobs and poles for polished nickel plumbing 13:40 Different ways to finish metals 15:25 Plated metal 20:30 Different types of finishes 22:10 Brass 24:30 Nickel 29:40 Bronze 33:50 “ I think that’s really good to know yourself in finishes, which is why we’re doing this podcast so that if you’re a perfectionist, you are not gonna want anything unlacquered. You’re gonna wanna know that that is stayed and true, and you are gonna really love lacquered brass, or you’re gonna love electro plated if it’s done very, very well, or even gold leafed.” 19:58 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Sue met Amanda who was initially the organizer for a client that we’ve done several homes for and these have been the most organized spaces we’ve ever been in. She has a system and an art to it, and with her organization, it’s a business she’s done for 20 years and now she does estate liquidation, which ironically has a lot of commonalities. Summer break is about to begin and we’re going to be at that time of year when we turn into half the woman that we were as we lose our brains a little bit, so this can be a great opportunity to start to clean out and kind of inventory where we’re at and what we wanna add. Organizing closets 3:20 Pantry and kitchen 12:25 Getting into estate sales 20:20 Emptying out the entire room 25:40 Amanda’s posting frequency 37:30 Celebrity projects 40:20 Amanda’s handle 42:55 “People are always like ‘I need to buy more hangers’ and I’m like ‘No, you just need to purge your closet. You don’t need more hangers.’ Hangers in setting yourself up is like 120, or 180, or some people it might be 650, but once you run out, it’s like ‘OK I need to purge because my closet kind of hits a max at a certain point. And it’s not even a max of space, it’s just a max of your visual eye and function to find what you’re looking for.” 7:56 @shopkuzakcloset https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode Sue and Jess had no idea what the episode would be about, only that Cori would ask them some questions and they’d have to answer on the spot. In this episode we got to talk to one of our very favorite people, partners in business, Jeremy Fillmore, and any time we get the opportunity to call him in business to help on a project, we 100% do. We love all things interior and all things exterior and Jeremy is all things exterior and landscape architecture. We feel like it’s finally that time of year when we can start to play in our yards and start to bring them back to life and enjoy them. The purpose of this episode today is to talk to Jeremy, who is really creative and always has great ideas, about how to bring our yards back from a long Winter. As early as April even would work. So you’d do the cold, hearty ones now, and then you could switch those out to your midSummer as you go.” 9:30 northland-design.com https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we are going to talk about the misconceptions between being a designer and a decorator. We’re going to discuss what people often think we do vs what we actually do, which is often quite different than people might think. This is an important episode because every once in a while we have a young person come up to us and say they wanna go to college to be an interior designer because of what they’ve seen on HGTV, but they don’t realize how different it actually is compared to what they’re seeing on HGTV. This episode should help you better understand what to expect and look out for if you or a loved one is thinking about going into this field of work. Interior designer vs decorator 8:00 Interior design 9:00 Can interior design be done by anyone? 15:50 Interior design requires technical knowledge? 19:20 Do interior designers push their own vision and not the client’s? 21:30 Do all interior designers have picture perfect homes? 27:05 Is interior design something you can do from home? 31:35 Do you have to be good at sales to be an interior designer? 35:50 Is interior design for modest homes? 39:40 “What I’m so proud of is that we can design this home, everything is finished, approved by the client, we can do all these drawings, put them in a drop box, and send them in the cyberspace and the cloud across the nation to Washington DC, or to wherever and a builder can build off of those documents. That’s the technicality and where we shine.” 20:00 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we’ve got a fun one we’re doing on moody spaces, about which we’ve gotten a lot of questions on how you create a moody space, or where to create one. It’s a trend that many people are wanting to understand and incorporate. Many want a more intimate location where you can gather your people, create a scene, and just have a mood to talk or share secrets, so we’re going to go over this type of space and help you better understand what it ought to look like. The purpose of this episode will be kind of a how-to in creating a dark space and to give you courage to do so. When and where to saturate 3:25 Enclosed rooms like powder baths 4:20 How we choose a dark wall color 12:05 Primary bedroom 15:10 Dining room 22:50 Cori’s pink primary bathroom 28:35 “Typically, we’re inspired by the person, so a lot of times we will do a wallpaper and start with that, kinda like a rug in the great room. So I’d start with the rug, be it a witty wallpaper, I want it to feel really dark, so we’re gonna make sure the background or the field color is gonna be deep and moody, and I might be starting with one that’s deep green from porter teleo, and then I might have one that’s more of a Marlow color.” 12:24 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, we are going to debunk some TikTok interior design trends. If you’re a regular user of TikTok, you may notice there are some micro trends happening in the interior design space online of these teenagers who talk really fast and are emphatically opinionated on these trends. We’re just here today to talk about what these “micro trends” are in interiors and whether we agree or not, such as chopping your pillows, whether fluffy beds are in or out, if colored sheets are in or out, and what you should do in regards to artwork in your home. Cottage core and dark academia 3:00 The dark kitchen is coming back again 11:00 Polished chrome and silver 15:50 Mass-produced art 19:20 Chopping your pillows 20:45 White fluffy beds 22:20 Colored sheets 23:20 Cottage core style bedrooms 24:55 Kitchens 27:00 Dealing in absolutes 32:50 Marble veining in countertops 34:10 Living rooms 38:10 “I think if you love design, you should for sure figure out who you are and what color, or if you’re a stain grade, where you are in the stain grade. I will say we’re gonna start seeing the wood floors really warm up. We’ve been in this white oak moment for a really long time, so if they’re still gonna stick with oaks I think they’ll warm up, but I think walnut is always going to be your everlasting in the middle choice where you’ll never regret it. We have a listener question that we’re going to do for the podcast today on kitchen space planning. One of our listeners asked us a few questions on this issue and said “I don’t think you can name names when it comes to appliances, but I’m wondering if you could touch on general considerations like how do I know what size range to buy?” We discuss different brands and answer another question about kitchen sink size and what to buy. We had a lot of fun with this one, so we hope you guys listen and enjoy! What range to buy 1:25 The Cafe Stove from GE 10:15 Buying a kitchen sink 12:40 Counter depth or standard refrigerators? 15:00 Splurging on an appliance like an ice maker, steam oven, or in-wall coffee machine 18:20 Microwave placement and matching 23:40 Hood size vs range size 30:00 “I think you know when you’re in a home, I’m in a small kitchen, I call it my camper kitchen because we haven’t done anything to this house, because I wanna tear it down and I wanna build my dream kitchen, so right now I have a small kitchen, so anything larger than a 30” range wouldn’t make sense in my kitchen. It wouldn’t fit, so if you know you’re a small kitchen, you know you’re gonna be a 30 inch range, 36 range, probably not a 48 inch. If you’re getting to a moderate sized kitchen, you can tease with 48 inches.” 1:43 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We have a fun episode for everyone today. We had an event at Alice Lane that was so fun and we wanted to include you guys in the Alice Lane Galentine’s Spring, Easter party. We did colorstrology, which is where we assign a color to someone depending on their birthday. What we learned from studying this little book called “Colorstrology” by Michele Bernhardt is it’s 100% true to all the people that we’ve read colors to and we probably read over 50 colors. Some were surprised by the colors they were assigned because it’s not always the first color they choose, but often that color would complement the chosen color, so we’ll be talking about color and each of our own colorstrology. Jessica’s colors 5:40 Cori’s colors 10:50 Sue’s colors 14:15 These 7 colors will be everywhere in 2024 and what’s next 19:45 Susanne’s favorite color 28:05 Cool lavenders and lilacs 34:50 Orange 40:40 Mustard 47:40 Rose 51:10 Powder blue 53:50 “We’re not doing gray anymore at all. If you guys are choosing gray today, it’s just such a terrible choice right now because it’s already clotted and we need to get on the bleeding edge because these choices you’re gonna make right now are gonna last the next decade. If you’re doing gray, you’re gonna be feeling like a lagger the minute it’s dried on the walls.” 23:03 https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. The reason we felt like we should do a sconces episode is because Jess got a text back in December from a good friend in real estate who said that his wife can’t see herself when she’s putting makeup on. Jess asked him for a picture of his setup and when he send over the image, she noticed he had the wrong type of sconces next to his mirror, which was a really beautiful, very elegant sconce, but it had a linen shade on it and one candelabra bulb in each sconce. The window was behind her, so there was no light on her face. Jess told him he had the wrong type of sconces for a bathroom and this got us thinking that there may be a lot of other people out there that don’t know about all the different types of sconces and what they’re used for, how to optimize them for lighting, and where to put them in your home. It still feels different in person with your eyeballs, with the height of the people viewing it. Maybe the wife is 5 feet tall, maybe the husband is 6 feet tall, maybe the husbands that are married are both 6’8” or something. We all perceive things differently depending on the height and we try to design to that as we have a stick figure of a person their height.” 24:22 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we’re talking Spring and we are so excited because we’ve grown tired of this long Winter. There are things we do in the Spring, and things we do in the Fall and Summer, so we just wanted to sort of Martha Stewart our way through this situation and talk about all the ways that we’re doing all our own Spring Refreshes, such as stocking the pantry and letting go of all your junk, or just giving stuff away. We each have different areas that we’re working on, so this should be a really fun conversation. We’re doing listener questions again today, which means we are gathered just to answer your questions that we’ve received in the last little bit. These are the questions that weren’t long enough to make a podcast out of, but were enough that we could give a short answer to. If you have any questions that we haven’t answered yet, just send them to [email protected] and we will answer them here. In this episode we’re celebrating international women’s day. There's a lot in history that women have done and trails that have been blazed that are cause for where you’re at right now. We have the opportunity to go to school, work, and express ourselves, which is a huge privilege, and it’s a good exercise for anybody to think about the women in your own life that have inspired you and just be super grateful for what they’ve done. Join us today as we discuss these amazing women and their accomplishments. We have a special guest with us today by the name of John Woodley, who is a real estate expert here in the Wasatch Front area. He runs a company called Woodley Real Estate with his brother, specializing in the high end luxury market as well as class A office space. We felt like it would be a great idea to bring an expert on this show to discuss this market because this comes up in conversation for us socially and in business all the time. We talk about what this market is doing not just in Utah, but everywhere else and kind of where it’s going. Are we headed for a downturn? 2:45 Buyer confidence 5:45 Things that are the most important to upgrade 8:10 Is it better to play it safe, or put some money into it? 12:30 Best ways for homeowners to mitigate equity or value loss during the economic downturn 14:05 Helping clients grow their wealth through real estate and why so many people use real estate to grow their wealth 16:55 The best way to get started in real estate for someone with 100k, 500k, or 1 million 20:45 Tax benefits for making it an investment 23:50 AirBnB 27:20 Annual contracts 29:05 Understanding regulations 32:40 What can previous downturns teach us about opportunities in real estate? 33:35 When the market turned back around in 2020 36:55 The cycle of peak and bottom in the market 39:00 Hottest real estate market right now 40:25 difference between residential and commercial real estate 44:25 Has there been a decline in commercial real estate recently? 48:35 Defining luxury 51:45 “We say make it look nice and classy, or in good taste, and then let whoever buys it put their own personal spin on it. You go spend a ton of money on something that you think’s just gonna knock their socks off, lights out, and they’re looking at it going ‘We’re gonna have to tear that out.’ You’re adding the cost to put in and they’re subtracting that out and adding in what they’re gonna have to put back in.” “They’re gonna have to repaint that cobalt wall.” 13:32 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we’re continuing to talk from our last episode about design through the decades. We got you through the 1940s and we’re sitting here in the 1950s, so we’re gonna take you through what it was like, the political climate at the time, and then of course fashion, then getting into interiors and Cori’s going to give us a little bit of info of where music was at during that time too. 1950s fashion, interiors 2:38 1960s 6:46 1970s 14:53 1980s 25:29 1990s 37:18 2000s, 2010s, 2020s 46:20 “Furniture designers, architects, and product designers also began to create work that we now recognize as mid century and modern like we said before. This movement looked to combine sleek lines with organic shapes balancing modernity and naturalism. Bright happy colors were in every room of the house. Popular hues included turquoise, coral, pale yellow, mint green, and light blue. Pink was also at peak. It’s the rainbow you guys, it’s the whole rainbow. In the 1950s you see pink everywhere in kitchens, bedrooms, but especially in bathrooms.” 4:18 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. This is something we’ve had on the list to do for a very long time. There’s so much to talk about because we’ve just seen so many things come and go through the ages. We talk about each of the decades and kind of what influenced them to be in fashion at the time. We do this for fashion interiors, and then Cori throws in some things about music that happened at that time and how that relates to fashion or interiors. Your grandparents were likely alive for one of these decades, so you might even be thinking about them at a certain time when we talk about it and remembering grandma’s house, and what it was like. Design through the decades 5:09 Design is an art of situations 9:46 1910s fashion and decoration 12:30 1920s fashion 22:43 1930s 33:42 1940s 40:32 “They would use steel, glass plywood, and plastic in their creations. While unconventional materials at the time, they fit with the Bauhaus, ethos, and practicality. Ultimately however, the 1920s were all about the bling. People craved luxurious components in their lives, whether it was leather upholstered furniture or a lucite clock. The Jazz Age was majority glamor and glitz.” 30:46 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we’re going to be talking about those ugly necessities. We’ve had a lot of DMs and questions about how to help disguise some of the things we have to live with that make our lives more comfortable, more easy, but aren’t very attractive. So we thought we would compile them all into a list in one day and just talk about all of them here. If you’ve written us a question in the past, we’re not ignoring you. We’ve been saving it for this moment. A lot of times, we remove those ugly things from the scene when we do photo shoots of the homes that we design, or we have figured out a way to disguise it in a permanent way, so they can still have the convenience, but they don’t have to have the eye sore. You just paint it the same color as the wall, or the ceiling.” “AC returns, same thing?” “Same thing.” 28:54 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we’re talking about design fails, which is something that happens to everybody in the industry. Jess got a DM from a new designer and she said she had some really bad feedback from one of her clients that said she shouldn’t even be in the design industry. They felt like things went so poorly, so she asked if we ever get discouraged. Boy, if we could only tell you the struggles we’ve had! Our failures have been some of our greatest teaching moments, so we decided to share with you guys about our experiences to help those of you in the design field. Talking about design fails 4:00 Lessons learned meeting 7:00 The delivery process 8:00 A claim 9:00 Designing a whole carpet wrong 15:25 Furniture that doesn’t fit 17:18 Handling everything for the client 20:38 Couldn’t get the furniture up the stairs 25:02 Find people with a sense of humor 28:48 You don’t want be the smartest person in the room 34:34 Use your vendor representatives 40:32 “There are things that are teaching moments that you learn from, and there are some things that logistically, that are out of your control, that unfortunately make you as the business owner look bad, and that’s just with everything. Those to me are the most frustrating things.” “#Covid.” “Yeah, exactly.” 5:38 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we’re talking about product development and Jess and Cori are basically the heads of this movement. Cori helps get the stuff produced and Jess is the visionary behind the products. We’ve seen a lot of things go from the beginning stages of just concept, to full development and some of them have really stuck and the reaction that many of our clients, listeners, and supporters have had are very positive. We get into the Lucca Family and the influence they’ve had on what we do and our products. We put Lucca on our website in our website’s infancy, and this thing really started selling, which pushed us to get a new warehouse and changed the whole way we did shipping in order to keep up with the demand. Product development 5:05 The first generation 10:07 Marketing 19:52 600 unique products 21:35 Jess’s side table and what we’re going to produce 23:00 Lucca Pedestal 25:42 The one Lucca thing to buy 28:39 “I read a long time ago an interior designer said ‘You gotta keep your head down, and you just crush it in your own lane, and you do what you do, and you don’t try to do what the other guy is doing.’ and so we just do that. I don’t follow other people in our own space, in our own state because I don’t want to have to be influenced by it. I wanna make sure we stay original to us.” 13:15 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. Today we are taking you into our 2nd half of styling principles and we’ll be going through 5-10. We are talking about styling this elusive white tiger in the sky that is so hard to pin down for so many people and it’s hard to know what the rules are, how to do it, or how to make sure it looks good. The eye often just tells us if it’s good and when to stop. It’s a feeling, kind of inside your stomach and your head. We wanted to break it down so that you guys just have the very best idea of how the pros do it. Lighting 1:26 Organic 8:01 Creating a conversation 11:12 The senses 26:03 Photos 29:50 We love an odd number 38:19 “Trays are a really, really great way to corral a lot of styling and to ground it. It kind of acts like an area rug in the room, and it’s another really great way to kind of put things together. I think kitchen islands can even have a beautiful wicker tray, your cocktail table is a really great place for trays, nightstands, every surface. We love a tray.” 25:22 –https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ –https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ –https://alicelanehome.com/ –https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome –https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ –https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity –News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices. We always say that the last layer is everything and we do everything from plan conception all the way down to the last bit of styling, and even though it’s all important and critical to a beautiful space, this is the cherry on top, or the soul of the house. This is one of those things that people either have or don’t and it’s really hard to just own your own styling, so you go find inspiration. We get a lot of questions on styling in general, just on how you do it and how one styles because it’s something they teach you in school at all. This is often what separates the good from the great where the good designer might design well, but not style so well, but the great stylists will design and style well. Styling can be hard to grasp 5:19 Edit 10:42 Blank spaces and when to use them 16:04 Focal points 20:44 Shelf styling 32:40 “When we’re trying to put things together that are gonna go on a shelf, if those things look great together, even on the floor, or when we’re pulling things from the show room, we’ll usually load everything onto this console in the design center conference room, if they look great together, they’re gonna look great together on a shelf. No matter where you put them, they're gonna look great in a room.” 14:57 -https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ -https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ -https://alicelanehome.com/ -https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome -https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ -https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity -News Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 Learn more about your ad choices.
