In 1987, Josefina Rivera escaped from Gary Heidnik and led Philadelphia police to his home, where they discovered three women chained and imprisoned in his basement and human remains in the freezer. Heidnik had spent years preying on vulnerable and intellectually disabled women, including a previous victim he kidnapped from a state hospital in 1978. Between November 1986 and March 1987, he abducted seven women and subjected them to horrific abuse, captivity, starvation, and torture. Two victims, Sandra Lindsay and Deborah Dudley, were murdered.  Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Gary Heidnik. Rivera ultimately escaped and called the police, bringing Heidnik’s reign of terror to an end. At trial, his defense argued insanity, citing his history of mental illness, while prosecutors maintained that he knew right from wrong. Heidnik was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder along with numerous kidnapping, rape, and assault charges and sentenced to death. After years of appeals and a last-minute stay, Gary Heidnik was executed by lethal injection on July 6, 1999—the last execution carried out in Pennsylvania. Eugene Horsch was arrested in June 2026 after authorities found drugs, illegal firearms, fake IDs, and law-enforcement credentials in his vehicle, leading investigators to his Philadelphia home. The investigation uncovered evidence connected to four missing women—Amy McHale, Blair Tonzelli, Maribel Fresses, and Gabrielle Amarando—with digital evidence suggesting Fresses and Amarando may be dead. Eugene’s father, Raymond Horsch, who died in 2025, had a long criminal history and produced disturbing films and photographs depicting sex, violence, and apparent deaths. In the 1990s, a series of brutal murders and disappearances in Southwest Florida became known as the Hog Trail Murders. Investigators began focusing on Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. after survivor David Payton described being lured into Conahan’s car with an offer of beer and money. Payton escaped by stealing the car, while another survivor, Stanley Burden, described being taken into the woods, tied to a tree, and attacked. On July 29, 2026, 60-year-old Shukur Aikebaer was at his home in Chino Hills, California, with his wife and 13-year-old daughter when the power to their house was intentionally cut. When Shukur went outside to check the electrical panel, two men ambushed him, shot him, and forced him into the trunk of their car. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the Chino Hills kidnapping. A neighbor called 911 after hearing gunshots and screams, and deputies quickly located the suspects' silver Nissan Altima. After a brief pursuit, the passenger surrendered, but the driver, 67-year-old Zhengfeng Bo, opened fire into the trunk before officers shot and killed him. Shukur was found inside and had died from the additional gunshots fired by Bo. Investigators soon discovered that this was a deeply personal crime. In 1992, 20-year-old Jennifer Judd was murdered in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Jennifer had been married for only nine days when she was brutally stabbed in her home. Although we aren't covering a new case this week, we wanted to bring you this replay episode from the Criminology vault. It's the Mississippi Burning case which originally aired on episode 49 in 2019. We will be back soon with an all new episode of Criminology. In the summer of 1964, three civil rights workers went missing in Mississippi. They were in the state working to help African Americans get registered to vote. Their station wagon was found burned and then their bodies were found after a 44-day search. The murders sparked a national outcry for justice and led to the first successful federal prosecution in a Mississippi civil rights case. There was a tremendous amount of media coverage on this case. The individuals responsible included members of the KKK as well as local law enforcement. But it wouldn't be easy to get convictions on all involved, and the fight for justice would take many years. On the morning of July 31, 2022, Mackenzie Shirilla's Toyota Camry slammed into a commercial building in Strongsville, Ohio, at approximately 100 mph. Dominic Russo died instantly, while Davion Flanagan succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward. Despite catastrophic injuries, Shirilla survived. The disappearance of Tina Marcotte and the mysterious death of Tom Kueter fueled decades of speculation before advances in DNA evidence finally led investigators to officially close the case. In 1987, Janice Christensen, a 31-year-old Ohio woman, went on a routine morning run that ended in one of Hudson, Ohio's most haunting cold cases. Her husband reported her missing after she failed to come home, and then went searching for her. He was the one who ultimately found her body. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Janice Christensen. Advances in DNA technology and genetic genealogy ultimately identified her killer as Thomas Collier Jordan. In September 2023, authorities in Romeoville, Illinois, discovered one of the most disturbing family murders in recent memory. Inside a home on Concord Avenue, investigators found 32-year-old Zoraida Bartolomei, her partner Alberto Rolon, their sons Adriel and Diego, and the family's three dogs shot to death. Although we aren't covering a new case this week, we wanted to bring you this replay episode from the Criminology vault. It's the case of the Pocatello Babysitter Murders which originally aired on episode 54 in 2019. We will be back with all new episode next week. Between 1978 and 1983, four teenage girls disappeared from Pocatello, Idaho. All four were later found deceased. There were similarities between the victims aside from their ages and gender. They all attended the same school. All went missing during the summer months, and three of the girls were either babysitting or due to babysitting at the time they disappeared. Was this the work of a serial killer or random acts of violence? In 1993, 19-year-old college freshman Tricia Lynn Reitler, an Indiana Wesleyan University freshman, vanished while walking back to her dorm after a quick trip to a supermarket. More than three decades later, investigators believe they know who was responsible, but Tricia's body has never been found, and no one has been charged in her case. On March 4, 2022, Kouri Richins called 911 after finding her husband unresponsive in their home in Kamas, Utah. Eric was only 39 years old and appeared healthy before his sudden death. An autopsy later revealed Eric died from a fentanyl overdose estimated at roughly five times the lethal dose. Investigators noted there was no known history of opioid abuse. In the 1980s and early 1990s, a terrifying series of murders occurred connected to the so-called "Coin Shop Killer," believed to be longtime suspect Charles Thurman Sinclair. Multiple coin shop owners across several states were targeted using a chillingly consistent method: a friendly, knowledgeable customer would gain trust before returning to rob and murder the shop owners. In one of the most unbelievable identity theft cases ever uncovered, William Woods lost far more than his credit score — he lost his freedom, his name, and nearly his sanity after authorities mistakenly believed he was the imposter. In the summer of 1982, Father Reynaldo John Rivera was lured out to a location by a male caller who said they needed last rites performed. In 1989, Rebecca Shaeffer was just hitting her stride as an actress. She was coming off a three-year stint on a television show, My Sister Sam, opposite Pam Dawber. Robert John Barbo had been stalking Rebecca, though she was unaware of it. His obsession would end in tragedy. In May 2004, suitcases filled with body parts were discovered around the Chesapeake Bay area. It took the police some time to identify that the remains belonged to Bill McGuire. This was in large part because Bill had not been reported missing, so the authorities turned their attention to his wife, Melanie. She did file for a restraining order against Bill, which gave her story more credibility. But evidence began to come out that poked holes in Melanie's story. Just before 11 PM on August 11th, 2009, Ryan Widmer called 911, requesting help at his home in Hamilton Township, Ohio. According to Ryan, His wife, twenty-four-year-old Sarah Widmer, had fallen asleep while she was taking a bath and accidentally drowned. Police quickly became suspicious of his story. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the death of Sarah Widmer. Ryan's story was picked apart, and discrepancies emerged. Also, the crime scene didn't seem to make sense. But the state's case was primarily circumstantial. And although Ryan has been convicted multiple times of Sarah's murder, there are many who believe he is innocent. On October 26th, 2015, 18-year-old Ebby Jane Steppach was reported missing. She was last seen leaving her grandparents' home in West Little Rock, Arkansas, around 8 PM on the 24th. On Friday, November 24th, 1989, eighteen-year-old Amanda Stavik, who went by Mandy, went for a run around 2:30 in the afternoon. Kyra, the family's German Shepherd, ran with her. This run was often a family affair, with Mandy's mother, Mary, joining on her bike. Because of the holiday, though, Mary was busy at the time, so Mandy decided to head out alone. When Kyra returned to the family home without Amanda, the family became worried. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the murder of Amanda Stavik. Three days after she went missing, the search for Mandy came to a sad end when she was found dead, submerged in the Nooksack River. Although we are off for a holiday break, we wanted to bring you this replay episode from the Criminology vault. It's the case of Rhonda Hinson which originally aired on 237 in December, 2022. We will be back with all new episodes starting January 3, 2026. Happy holidays! On December 22nd, 1981, 19-year-old Rhonda Annette Hinson headed to an office Christmas party. In the early morning of the 23rd, she was found about a half mile from her home lying outside her car on the should of the road. The police determined that Rhonda had been shot by a high-powered rifle that went through her trunk, back seat, and into the driver's seat. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the baffling death of Rhonda Hinson. Witnesses came forward the descriptions of cars seen near Rhonda's car. Police had to figure out if these were people involved in Rhonda's death or people who stopped to see what was happening. What clouded the waters even more was that it was revealed that Rhonda was not supposed to come home that night, and only a few people knew of her change in plans. The police looked closely at Rhonda's boyfriend, Greg, and a friend named Mark, whose girlfriend said she saw Rhonda's sweater in his car before Rhonda was killed. That sweater was later found in Rhonda's car. 41 years later, two big questions remain. What exactly happened in the death of Rhonda Hinson, and who was involved? In 2007, in Carnation, Washington, a terrible tragedy unfolded. When 61-year-old Judy Anderson didn't show up to work on December 26th, a friend and co-worker drove to her place. What she discovered was an unimaginable scene. Six members of the Anderson family, including Judy's husband Wayne, were found dead inside the home. From early on, police felt that they had a strong suspect, Ernie Gable, and even physical evidence that may help to prove it. But the case remained cold for decades. On April 13th, 2011, twenty-year-old Holly Bobo, a nursing student at the University of Tennessee at Martin, was abducted from her Darden, Tennessee home. She woke up early that morning to study for an 8 AM exam. Her parents were at work, but her brother was home and saw her outside with a man he thought was her boyfriend. On August 12th, 1967, Buford and Pauline Pusser were ambushed while driving, and Pauline was fatally shot. Buford was shot in the jaw. Buford Pusser was the Sheriff of McNairy County in Tennessee and built a name for himself as tough on crime. Buford became a hero figure and vowed to find his wife's killer. The movie, Walking Tall, made Buford a larger-than-life character after it was released in 1973. On New Year's Eve, 2020, Morgan Metzer was at her best friend's house, where she had been planning to celebrate the new year. She was feeling tired and decided to call it an early night. She drove home in Cherokee County, Georgia, got into bed, and quickly fell asleep. In the middle of the night, when she opened her eyes, she saw the shadow of a man standing in her bedroom doorway. On October 31st, 1974, the O'Bryan family set out for Halloween in Deer Park, just outside of Houston, Texas. Despite the rain, Ronald Clark O'Bryan and neighbor Jim Bates took their kids, four in total, out to trick or treating. But this Halloween turned out to be fatal for one of the O'Bryan children. Major breaking news here as serial killer Robert Eugene Brashers has been identified as being responsible for the infamous quadruple Yogurt Shop murder in December, 1991 in Austin, TX. Killed were Jennifer Harbison, and Eliza Thomas who were employees of the 'I Can't Believe it's Yogurt' shop in Austin, along with Jennifer's sister Sarah Harbison, and her friend Amy Ayers who were in the shop in order to get a ride home with Jennifer after closing. All four girls were shot in the head execution style and at least one of them was raped. After they were killed, the shop was set on fire to cover up the crime and destroy evidence. Robert Eugene Brashers was a known rapist and serial killer who roamed from state to state. Among many twisted crimes, We know Brashers was responsible for the murders of Genevieve "Jenny" Zitricki in Greenville, SC in 1990, as well as that of mother and daughter Sherri and Megan Scherer in Portageville, Missouri in 1998. On Saturday July 26th, 2025, officers from the Arkansas State Police were notified that there had been a double homicide in the park. The bodies were identified as forty-three-year-old Clinton Brink and forty-one-year-old Cristen Brink. In 2023, authorities received a call about possible human body parts in plastic bags outside of a home in Tarzana, California. When officers arrived at the scene, there were no bags in front of the house and no body parts to be found. In the early morning hours of Sat August 20th, 2016, Twenty-seven-year-old Derrick Dearman, entered the home where his twenty-four-year-old estranged girlfriend, Laneta Lester, was staying. In 1997, an individual terrorized the area around Nashville, Tennessee. This person robbed several fast-food restaurants, killing workers in the process. A man named Paul Dennis Reed Jr. was ultimately identified as "the fast-food killer" and took seven lives before he was caught. Twenty-three-year-old Steven Freeman had been shot, and Mary Katherine Higdon, who lived in the house with Steven, admitted that she was the one who shot him. In 2022, Nicki Lenway was thirty-three years old and working as a crime scene investigator with the Minneapolis Police Department. She had a five-year-old son named Callahan with her ex-boyfriend, Tim Amacher. On April 20th, 2022, Nicki was shot multiple times while she was waiting in her car outside of a scheduled visitation between Tim and her son. On November 25, 2020, just one day before Thanksgiving, multiple residents called 911 to report a fire at a house in Mount Morris, Illinois. On October 4th, 1978, in Iowa, a woman was found face down in a deep ditch about twenty feet from the road. No identification was found with her body, and being in an advanced state of decay, police had no way to determine who she was. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Wilma June Nissen. On December 4th, 1972, 7-year-old Steven Stayner was abducted while walking home from school. Steven's abductor, Kenneth Parnell, manipulated Steven into thinking his family didn't want him and had made Kenneth his guardian. He abused Steven for many years, moving around often and changing Steven's name. It wasn't until Parnell abducted another young boy that Steven made the decision, he could not let what happened to him happen to his boy. College student Tracey Neilson was murdered on her 21st birthday in Oklahoma in January of 1981. She was a bright student and a newlywed who had been married less than 6 months when she was killed. By 1948, Howard Unruh was unemployed and living with his mother, Freda. He had been a decorated soldier in World War II but had trouble adjusting to life when he returned. Unruh is thought to be the first mass shooter and has been called the Father of Mass Murder by the press. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Howard Unruh. On April 26th, 2007, an emergency dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call from Linda Duffey. Linda told the dispatcher that her husband Patrick had been shot. In 1993, a stalker began to target 41-year-old Joanne Chambers, a first-grade teacher in Coolbaugh Township, Pennsylvania. The stalking escalated over time and the threats became more violent. In the early morning hours of May 5th, 2009, Sheri Coleman and her two sons, 11-year-old Garett and 9-year-old Gavin, were found dead in their home. On August 11th, 2024, 44-year-old father of three, Ryan Borgwardt went missing. He had gone kayak fishing on Big Green Lake in Wisconsin. His wallet and keys were found as was his capsized kayak. In 2015, 28-year-old Heather Bogle was employed at the Whirlpool factory in Clyde, Ohio. On July 12th, 1988, in Philadelphia, 4-year-old Barbara Jean Horn went outside to play. She was trying to find some of her friends to play with, but no one was home. One of Diane's daughters was pronounced dead at the hospital, while her other two children lived but suffered significant life-changing injuries. Margaret made it to the bus stop where this man was supposed to pick her up, but she was never heard from or seen again. In 1980, wife and mother Betty Gore was murdered in Texas. It was an especially brutal murder caused by many blows from an axe. Initially, police believed that it must have been a man who murdered Betty because of the vicious nature of the crime. But, the evidence started to point to a woman. Suspicion in Betty's death soon fell on her friend Candy Montgomery. It came out that Candy had visited Betty that day and that Candy had an affair with Betty's husband, Allan. The prosecution thought they had a pretty airtight case against Candy Montgomery. Candy admitted to killing Betty but said she did so in self-defense. On September 10th, 1988, Cynthia and David Dowaliby woke up to find their daughter Jaclyn missing from the house. The local police, as well as the FBI, started an investigation. They originally thought that the Dowalibys might receive a ransom demand from a kidnapper. But, suspicion soon turned to David and Cynthia. In March 2011, two women who worked at a Lululemon store were attacked, and one was killed. Police arrived to find 30-year-old Jayna Murray dead, with over 300 injuries, and 29-year-old Brittany Norwood wounded but still alive. Police found size 14 bloody shoe prints around the store, and the money was missing from the safe. Brittany Norwood told the police that two men came into the store after hours and attacked her and Jayna. She gave them somewhat of a description, but it was tough because they were wearing all black and had their faces covered. But Brittany soon went from a sympathetic survivor to the prime suspect after the police found evidence and holes in her story. Scott Peterson became one of the most despised criminals ever after being convicted of the murder of his wife and unborn child. Just before Christmas in 2002, 27-year-old Lacie Peterson, who was 33 weeks pregnant with a boy they planned to name Conner, vanished. Less than a month after she vanished, both Lacie's and Conner's bodies were found after they washed ashore. It didn't take long for police to suspect Scott Peterson. On May 9th, 2021, Mother's Day, the Bailey family woke up to find their 13-year-old daughter Tristyn Bailey missing. It appeared as though she had not slept in her bed the night before. They quickly called the police, who began to search for Tristyn. A jogger happened upon her body near a retention pond in St. Johns, Florida, later that day. Within three hours of the jogger finding Tristyn's body, they had a 14-year-old boy named Aiden Fucci and his parents in an interrogation room. On July 20th, 1971, the body of 24-year-old Rita Curran was found in the bedroom of her Burlington, Vermont, apartment. Her body was discovered by one of her roommates. Rita was a highly regarded teacher at Milton Elementary School, and her murder rocked the community. It caused residents to start locking their doors and to run out and buy extra security measures. In 1985, 8-year-old Nicole Morin mysteriously vanished from her apartment building in Toronto. She was set to meet a friend in the lobby to go to the pool but never made it. The friend talked to Nicole on the intercom system and waited for her to come down. After a period of time, she buzzed Nicole's apartment, asking her mother where she was. In Mattoon, Illinois, in the mid-1940s, many people claimed they were made sick by a chemical pumped or sprayed into their homes as a gas. The gasser, or the person people imagined was the gasser, was given several monikers, including "the Mad Gasser of Mattoon" Or "The Phantom Anesthetist." No physical evidence of any gas was ever actually found, however, leading many to doubt the claims of all of these people who claimed to be victims. On July 26th, 1974, the body of a woman was found on Race Point Beach in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It was an extremely gruesome crime scene, and parts of the woman's body had been removed, possibly to prevent identification. This woman became known as The Lady of The Dunes as the authorities worked for years to try to identify her and solve her murder. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the case of The Lady of The Dunes. There were some leads over the years, and theories emerged as to the woman's identity. As advancements in DNA came about, those were used to try to identify the woman. It wasn't until 2022 that part of the mystery of The Lady of The Dunes was solved. She was officially identified as Ruth Marie Terry. Jared Bridegan was gunned down in the Jacksonville, Florida, area in February of 2022. His two-year-old daughter was left in the vehicle unharmed but is thought to have witnessed her father's murder. Jared was a father of four. He had two young daughters with his current wife, Kirsten, and twins with his ex-wife Shanna Gardner-Fernandez. Jared's divorce from Shanna and the subsequent custody battle was extremely contentious. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss this currently developing case. One man named Henry Tenon has been arrested in connection with Jared's murder. This arrest has led to much speculation that more arrests may soon be coming after it came out that Tenon had a connection to Shanna's husband. The police have not released many details, but it has not stopped people from theorizing that it is possible that Jared's murder was orchestrated by someone who, at one time, had been very close to him. A series of disturbing & frightening phone calls targeted dozens of businesses and people over an extended period of time. These calls were placed all over the country, and the person on the other end posed as a law enforcement official. What this caller instructed people to do to others was not only wrong and humiliating, it was, in many instances, criminal on the part of both the caller and the person who answered the phone. He often targeted fast-food restaurants and told managers that one of their employees, and sometimes even customers, had stolen. The caller then convinced the managers to strip search the so-called thief and many other degrading acts.
