As Luigi Mangione waits for a September 8, state trial date, he celebrated his birthday behind bars. Donors continue to pad his defense fund which now tops $1.5 million dollars. Mangione is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, and is preparing for back-to-back trials in New York. His federal trial begins October 13. A New York judge recently issued a split ruling regarding what evidence prosecutors can use at his trial. The judge ruled that the initial warrantless search of Mangione’s backpack at a Pennsylvania McDonald's was improper, suppressing items like a gun magazine, cell phone, passport, and wallet from the state trial. However, the judge determined that a subsequent search of the bag at the police station was a valid inventory search. This allows prosecutors to present a 3D-printed pistol and a notebook containing statements about targeting health insurance executives. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all state and federal charges. He faces up to life in prison if convicted. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A federal grand jury issues a superseding indictment against Anna Kepner's stepbrother and alleged killer, Timothy Hudson, adding a charge of sexual assault alongside premeditated murder. Despite the brutal nature of the crime, Hudson remains free on pre-trial release under GPS monitoring at an uncle's home. Actor Matthew Perry wrote about his issues with addiction to alcohol and drugs. In his memoir, he said he began drinking at 14 and was an alcoholic by 18. Perry first went to rehab and completed a 28-day program at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation after a jet-ski accident led to an addiction to Vicodin. In his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big, Terrible Thing," Perry claimed to have been to rehab 15 times, detoxed 65 times, and spent about $7 to $9 million trying to get sober. Perry also spent 5-months in the hospital after his colon burst from prolonged opioid abuse. Two years after his near-death experience, Perry goes to a Rehab facility in Switzerland. He wrote that he faked pain symptoms to get Oxycontin during COVID. He was also getting daily Ketamine infusions. The Ketamine use after treatment led to his death. Five people where charged in connection with Perry's overdose death. Now, one of those who sold Ketamine to Perry gets a slap on the wrist from the court. Eric Flemming sentenced to 24 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release. According to prosecutors, Fleming admitted he distributed the ketamine, obtained from so-called "Ketamine Queen" Jasveen Sangha. Fleming also admitted to distributing 50 vials of ketamine to Perry's live-in personal assistant. On October 28, Matthew Perry went to his country club to play a game of Pickleball with friends. Perry returned to his home after the game and was seen by his assistant, who was leaving the house to run errands. At 4 p.m., the assistant returned home and found Perry floating face down in the heated end of the pool. Paramedics pulled Perry out of the pool and pronounced him dead at the scene. Nick Reiner, 32 pleads not guilty to the December 2025 murders of his parents, director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. His preliminary hearing has been postponed to Sept. 15, 2026, as the defense is still waiting for evidence. There is roughly 2 terabytes of discovery and autopsy results. Reiner is now represented by a public defender after his previous high-profile attorney Alan Jackson withdrew. Reports suggest Reiner is in a high-observation mental health unit in jail. Reiner has faced severe, long-term mental health challenges, including diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and was under a mental health conservatorship between 2020 and 2021. The murderders happened after Michele and Rob Reiner leave Conan’s party without their son after his off-putting behavior, like wearing a hoodie to a formal event and interrupting Bill Hader’s private conversation, leads to an embarrassing public row. Reiner, however, doesn’t make his own way to Brentwood. Instead, he pops up in Santa Monica at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, checking into The Pierside hotel. Desk staff don’t notice anything off about Reiner’s appearance, but the next morning, housekeepers find sheets covering the windows, and blood all over Reiner’s bedding and shower. The Reiners’ troubles with their middle child have been bubbling to a head for months. Every photo of the family from the September premiere of Rob’s latest film, "Spinal Tap: The End Continues," picture the 32-year-old sporting a deep scowl. By November, Nick Reiner moves back into his parents’ guest house, which he’s trashed on multiple occasions, leading up to a blowout fight the day after Thanksgiving that left Michele “at her wits’ end.” Joining Nancy Grace: Philip Dubé - Court-Appointed Counsel, Los Angeles County Public Defenders: Criminal & Constitutional Law; Forensics & Mental Health Advocacy; X: PhilipCDube, IG: PhilipDube, YouTube: PhilipDube3922 Dr. Bethany Marshall - Psychoanalyst, Author: "Deal Breaker," and featured in hit show "Paris in Love" on Peacock; Instagram & TikTok: drbethanymarshall, X: @DrBethanyLivee Scott Eicher - A founding member of the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team (C.A.S.T); Historical Cellular Analysis Expert; Former FBI agent of 22 years; Former Police Officer and Homicide Detective with Norfolk Virginia Police Dept. having served 12 years; Currently with Precision Cellular Analysis handling Criminal, Defense and Civil Cases Rob Shuter - Host: Naughty But Nice Podcast, Author of Newly-released Novel “It Started With A Whisper;" Former Publicist of Sean Combs; IG: @naughtygossip Dr. Kendall Crowns - Chief Medical Examiner Tarrant County (Ft Worth), Host of Podcast, "Mayhem in the Morgue," and Lecturer: Burnett School of Medicine at TCU (Texas Christian University) Kayla Brantley - Reporter-At-Large for DailyMail.com and Host of DailyMail’s Podcast: 'The Trial of Diddy;' X: @_KaylaBrantley, Instagram: @KaylaBrantley Sydney Sumner - Investigative Reporter, ‘Crime Stories’ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

According to reports, the shot was fired from the roof of a campus building about 200 yards away. Josh Duggar hires a new attorney as he tries for a fourth bid at freedom. Attorney Beau B. Brindley is arguing Duggar’s original trial was unfair. At an appeal hearing last month, Duggar appeared virtually, regarding an appeal that prosecutors argue was filed after the deadline. The court is deciding whether this appeal can proceed. The current motion alleges prosecutorial misconduct, misleading forensic evidence, and claims that evidence was withheld. His previous attempts to vacate the conviction, including appeals to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, have been denied. The former reality television star was arrested by federal agents on child pornography charges, “knowingly received child pornography.” He also “knowingly possessed child pornography” during the same months by using the Internet to “download child sexual abuse material.” Duggar entered a rehabilitation center in 2015 after he confessed to inappropriately touching his younger sisters when he was a teenager. Duggar was also accused of creating a private, paid Ashley Madison account, a social site made for people wanting to cheat on their significant other. Attorneys for Duggar claim he was not responsible for the data on his computer, that he was hacked. Joining Nancy Grace Today: Sara G. Alex Murdaugh's murder conviction has been unanimously overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. A new trial has been ordered for the disgraced attorney privously convicted for the murders of his wife and son. The ruling was based on jury tampering accusations against court clerk Becky Hill, of improperly influencing jurors, depriving Murdaugh of a fair trial. The court also noted that the original trial judge erred by allowing extensive testimony on Murdaugh's financial crimes. The two consecutive life sentences against Murdaugh have been vacated. Prosecutors now intend to retry the murder case by January 2027. Murdaugh will remain in prison, as he is still serving roughly 67 years for numerous financial crimes and fraud, to which he plead guilty. Did Jeffrey Epstein leave a suicide note? His brother, Mark, says no. He doesn't believe the one page letter unsealed by a District Judge Kenneth Karas was written by Jeffrey. Theres only five sentences printed on a sheet of lined paper. It's been seven years since the accused sex trafficking suspect was found hanging in his cell. A former cellmate says he found it in a book in their shared cell. Nicholas Tartaglione has said he discovered the note during the approximate two week time period they shared a cell in July 2019. It's been four years since father of three, Eric Richins, died from a fentanyl overdose. We now know his ingestion of the drug was planned by his wife Kori. Afterwards, she wrote a children’s book about grief, with her children, to help them cope. Kouri Richins' book isn't the only thing she's written. There's a six-page handwritten letter, "the walk the dog letter." Prosecutors say that in the letter, Richins is instructing he family how to lie about what happened the night her husband died. It's called the "walk the dog letter," since that phrase is written in big letters on the top. In it, Richins makes the claim that her husband Eric was addicted to drugs, that he would make frequent trips to Mexico to get pills, and that his death was an accidental overdose. The letter was written to Richins' mother, and it reportedly tells her to instruct Richins' brother to make the connection to Mexico and drugs The jury deliberated just under three hours before convicting Richins of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, forgery and two counts of insurance fraud. Just weeks after a judge said says Rex Heuerman "will go to trial come hell or high water," the accused serial killer pleads guilty to all seven murders for which he's charged, and an additional murder. Now we are learning details of what police found on Heuermann's phones. Yes, multiple phones. Rex Heuermann used a series of burner phones to lure sex workers, contacting them hundreds of times over two years, according to court documents. These "untraceable" phones, along with his personal phone, traced to a "tight cluster" of cell towers near his Massapequa Park home, linking him to the victims and taunting calls made to family members. Police arrested the prominent New York architect in connection with murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. The 8th victim, 34-year-old Karen Vergata, was last heard from on Valentine's Day 1996. Her legs and feet were found the same year on Fire Island. Her skull was found fifteen years later near Tobay Beach in Nassau County. The women's remains were found along Gilgo Beach in Long Island within 500 feet of each other. The first four victims, dubbed the Gilgo Four, were found wrapped in burlap. Heuermann, originally claimed his innocent. David Anthony Burke facing severe state-level charges in the death of Celeste Rivas. He has not been formally charged with federal crimes. If it can be proven that he lured Celeste to his home, wouldn't let her leave then murdered her, that rises to the level of kidnapping, a federal offence. D4vd could already be facing the death penalty for the special circumstances in the case —lying in wait, murder for financial gain, and killing a witness to a crime. Police say Lynette and husband Brian Hooker were using an 8‑foot dinghy to travel from Hope Town to their yacht, Soulmate, moored near Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands. Husband Brian says around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Lynette "bounced out of the dinghy", along with the boat’s engine key, which caused the motor to stop. He says strong currents carried her away, but he saw her swimming toward shore before losing sight of her. A family vacation to Bali turns deadly. Sheila von Wiese-Mack found bludgeoned to death inside a suitcase. The socialite's 25-year-old daughter Heather Mack and her 21-year-old then-boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer charged and convicted by an Indonesian court. Schaefer was sentenced in Indonesia to 18 years in prison, but after receiving time off for good behaviour, he has been released from a Bali jail. The 33-year-old still faces US federal charges. He has pled not guilty to conspiracy to kill someone in a foreign country, conspiracy to commit murder and obstruction of justice. He says, despite a judge's warning, he intends to represent himself. First responders and investigators noted the toy chest was dry and partially filled with toys, while Jo-Jo's clothes were damp and a wet towel was found nearby. Hale was previously convicted of abusing Jo-Jo with a belt in 2019, and sentenced to 10 years in prison for violating probation related to the case. He has not been charged with murdering Jo-Jo. Felony murder charges stick in the deaths of three Kansas city chiefs fans. Ricky Johnson, David Harrington, and Clayton McGeeney were last seen alive on January 7, 2024, watching the final regular-season Kansas City Chiefs game at the home of their friend, Jordan Willis. Two days later, authorities found their frozen bodies outside the house. After a yearlong investigation, prosecutors charged Jordan Willis and Ivory Carson in connection with the deaths, which gained national attention. Both men face three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of delivering a controlled substance. Police say Carson, known as "Blade Brown," supplied and sold cocaine to Willis and the victims. Investigators found Carson's DNA on a bag of fentanyl inside Willis' home. During the investigation, law enforcement initially said they did not suspect foul play. A toxicology report later confirmed that the men had cocaine, THC, and fentanyl in their systems. Police have since ruled the deaths as caused by "fentanyl and cocaine toxicity." As the case progressed, Willis moved out of the home and checked into rehab. A forensic analysis of Harrington’s phone uncovered text messages between Willis, McGeeney, Johnson, and others, linking Carson to the cocaine supply. DNA evidence identified Willis as a major contributor, and a second bag contained DNA matching Carson, confirming his role as the drug supplier. After a recent court hearing Willis said he was confident in his case when asked by reporters Joining Nancy Grace today: Jonathan Price - Brother of Ricky Johnson Derek Smith - Criminal Defense Attorney Dr. Heidi Green - Clinical Psychologist, Trauma Specialist, and Author: ‘The Path to Self-Love and World Domination; IG: @drheidigreen Barry Hutchison - Former 26-year Law Enforcement Veteran and Detective, Owner & Chief Investigator for Barry & Associates Investigative Services located in Kansas & Missouri Dr. Kendall Crowns - Chief Medical Examiner Tarrant County (Ft Worth), NEW Podcast --- launching on April 7th, Lecturer: Burnett School of Medicine at TCU (Texas Christian University) Eric Zahnd - Platte County Prosecutor in Missouri Alexis Tereszcuk - Crimeonline.com Investigative Reporter Dave Mack - CrimeOnline Investigative Reporter See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We are in a verdict watch in the case of Dr. Gerhardt Konig's attempted murder trial, accused of trying kill wife Arielle by shoving her off a cliff and then bashing her in the head with a rock. For her 36th birthday, anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig whisks his wife, engineer Arielle, away for a romantic getaway. He secretly plans the trip, arranging for family members and a hired nanny to stay with their two sons. The couple decides to hike a popular trail along the Koʻolau Mountains, leading to Pali Puka, a rock formation framing the east side of Oʻahu. Konig hopes the trip will ease tension after months of couples therapy following his accusations that Arielle had an affair. Arielle denies the claims and struggles to understand their origin. She wants to regain her husband’s trust, but his jealousy and abuse, including sexual assaults, have only escalated. During the hike, Arielle wants to push forward but stops when she sees the final steep stretch. She chooses to wait while Konig completes the climb. When he returns, he takes a picture of her in a tree and suggests they take a selfie at the trail’s edge, overlooking Oʻahu. Arielle smiles for the photo but immediately asks him to step forward so she can move away from the edge. As she follows him, Konig suddenly turns, grabs her arms, and shoves her toward the cliff, saying, “Get back over there. I’m so f***ing sick of you!” At first, Arielle thinks he is joking, but he pushes her again, pins her down, and pulls a syringe and vial from his bag, attempting to fill the syringe. She knocks it from his hands, but he digs into his bag again, possibly searching for another. Instead, he grabs a rock and repeatedly strikes her head. Other hikers hear Arielle’s screams and rush to help. Konig, covered in blood, flees into the woods and video calls his adult son, Emile. Shocked by his father’s appearance, Emile listens as Konig starts to explain but stops mid-sentence and says, “I just tried to kill Ari, but she got away.” He then tells Emile he wants to jump off the cliffs and kill himself. When Dr. Spencer Tepe doesn't show up for work at Athens Dental Depot in Columbus, Ohio, coworkers are shocked. They call their boss, the owner of Athens Dental, Dr Mark Valrose. Valrose is on vacation in Florida, but Spencer not showing up is so unusual that coworkers felt they needed to let Valrose know. Valrose tries to contact Spencer, and failing at that, Tepe's wife, Monique, is even more predictable than her husband. Unable to reach either Tepe, Valrose calls 911 in Columbus, Ohio, at 9:03 a.m., requesting a wellness check. Their bodies are found inside their house, which is now for sale. Early reports indicated Monique was shot once in the chest, and Spencer was shot more than once, with three shell casings found at the scene. In fact, the killer unloaded a full clip, 16 rounds, and both were shot in the head: Monique in her right cheek, and Spencer in his left ear. A total of 16 gunshot wounds are discovered. A standard magazine for a handgun holds 15 to 17 rounds, depending on the size of the bullet. Spencer and Monique likely died within "seconds to minutes" of being shot. The injuries suffered and the trajectories of bullets indicate some movement by Spencer and Monique; the range of fire is indeterminate, and there is no way to tell in which order the injuries are inflicted. Michael McKee, 39, arrested in the murders of his ex-wife and her new husband, is being held without bond in the Franklin County Jail. He pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary. According to a newly unsealed affidavit, witnesses claimed McKee was abusive during his marriage to Monique and had threatened to kill her. Court documents indicate McKee had previously visited the couple's home on Dec. 6, 2025, while they were away. McKee, a vascular surgeon from Illinois, drove 900 miles to commit the murders. He was tracked through surveillance video, which showed a silver SUV. Police also reportedly found multiple weapons in his Chicago-area condo, with one being connected to the crime scene. McKee faces a minimum of life in prison with parole eligibility after 32 years if convicted. Anthony and Megan Todt meet in college, marrying shortly after graduation. The couple opens a practice together in Colchester, Connecticut. When the couple welcomes children Aleksander, Tyler, and Zoe, Megan stays home fulltime to care for them. In 2019, the family moves to Florida, just miles away from Disney World. Anthony Todt continues working in Connecticut, travelling back to Florida for family weekends. Anthony Todt struggles to support his family in Florida. He loses his lease on the Connecticut Physical Therapy Office, and is in default on several loans. Todt begins charging insurance for care patients did not receive. By December, the feds discover Todt’s fraudulent activity. The father claims his family has no idea of his crimes and he will cooperate fully to keep it that way. Todt stops communicating with authorities, and in January, they have a warrant for his arrest. Investigators stake out the Todts’ seemingly vacant Florida home. Mail is piled on the porch and an eviction notice is taped to the door. The feds are leaving when Todt walks outside, stumbling and convulsing. They miss their chance to arrest Todt before he returns inside, but worried about his health, officers push open the front door to a horrible stench. Todt tells officers his wife is sleeping and he doesn’t know where his children are. Investigators find Megan, Aleksander, Tyler, Zoe, and the family dog badly decomposing in the Todts’bedroom. Investigators find Aleksander and Tyler on a mattress in the Todts’ bedroom, next to the bed, where Megan is covered with a blanket. Officers search the whole house for Zoe, before realizing her badly decomposed body is under a blanket at her mom’s feet. The bodies were ‘black as leather’ and an autopsy could not determine exactly how the victims died. All of the victims were drugged with Benadryl and had stab wounds. The children’s wounds we wereinflicted post-mortem, and the medical examiner says they were likely suffocated. Todt initially confesses to the killings, saying both he and Megan were concerned about the possible 2020 apocalypse, and wanted to make sure their family died together and without pain. Todt claims the parents came up with a plan to drug, then kill the children and then themselves. At trial, Todt claims he made that confession out of a desire to protect his wife, claiming she actually killed the children while he was away, and killed herself in front of him after confessing what she had done. Autopsies for Spencer and Monique Tepe show a much different scene of the murders than previously thought. Fourteen-year-old Emily Pike vanishes after sneaking away from a Mesa, Arizona, group home, where she lives. When she does not return, Mesa police are contacted, and she is reported missing. Her mother is not informed until Pike has been missing for a week. Police say the group home must notify her case manager, who would then contact her family or tribe. Authorities post her picture on social media, print flyers, and alert the media that Emily Pike is missing and may have run away. Nearly a month after Pike disappears, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office reports that searchers found the remains of an unidentified female in a wooded area near U.S. 60, about 20 miles northeast of Globe, Arizona. The remains are difficult to identify but appear to belong to a missing Native American girl. Within 24 hours, authorities confirm the remains are those of 14-year-old Emily Pike. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office reports that detectives found the head and torso in large contractor trash bags, while the legs were in separate bags. Investigators search the area but do not find the arms and hands. This information, intended for law enforcement only, is inadvertently shared with friends and family without warning. A preliminary autopsy report notes visible trauma to Pike’s face and head. Authorities do not find clothing, jewelry, or identification with the remains. Investigators believe someone killed Pike elsewhere before dumping her dismembered remains. Her arms and hands remain missing. The sheriff’s office says investigators recovered surveillance footage from Mesa, where Emily was last seen alive, but have not found footage from the rural area where her remains were discovered. Officials urge anyone with information to come forward. A $200,000 reward is available for information leading to Pike’s killer. State authorities are searching a ranch once owned by Jeffrey Epstein, looking for the bodies of two young girls. Allegations have been made that Epstein may have used Zorro ranch for sexual abuse and sex trafficking of young women. Ten individuals, women, and young girls have come forward saying they were groomed at the ranch, and despite those allegations, the property was never searched while Epstein was alive. A 2019 email reportedly written by an anonymous "former Zorro ranch staffer," forwarded to the FBI, claims at least two victims were buried on the property, accidentally killed while strangled during “rough, fetish” sex. Also, as part of the "truth commission," authorities are investigating claims of medical experimentation on Zorro Ranch. Victims say they were “drugged” and woke up around medical equipment, and told “sex organs and sperm” were “harvested from their bodies.” Epstein is said to have been obsessed with "transhumanism," the science of improving the human population with genetic engineering. Some claim Epstein openly discussed plans to produce his own enhanced bloodline, using the 7,500-acre ranch as a base to inseminate women. More images from Nancy Guthrie's home cameras have been recovered by the FBI as the search for the 84-year-old grandmother continues. Those images are thumbnail images from the motion-activated cameras, pointed at the backyard, side yard and swimming pool. Disappointing though, is that the cameras did not capture footage from the night of the abduction record, nor did it record anything suspicious, reportedly. Law enforcement has tracked down thousands of leads, as the increase in the reward was announced. Several people have been detained, but none lead to actionable information about Nancy Guthrie. Jurors heard explosive testimony about alleged drugging and humiliating encounters during the trial of twins Oren and Alon Alexander and their older brother Tal. The defense maintained the brothers innocence throughout. Oren and Alon Alexander, and brother Tal, faced an original 12-count indictment for sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. Some counts were dropped. Now, the jury returns a guilty verdict. They face life in prison. The three brothers come from a high-profile real estate background. Tal and Oren brokered a $47 million deal for their father in 2012 and a $240 million Manhattan condo sale in 2019. Alon attended law school before joining the family's private security company, Kent Security. Each brother has been accused of forcible rape by at least 10 women. All three are indicted on federal sex trafficking charges, while Oren and Alon also face sexual battery charges in Florida. The Alexanders have denied the allegations in civil cases, with their representatives suggesting the accusers are attempting to extort them. Court documents detail accounts from alleged victims. "Victim-1" claims she was raped by Tal Alexander and other men in 2021 at a home in the Hamptons. She says she felt unwell after drinking a glass of wine, then recalled Tal holding her down as another man entered the room. She later woke up in a separate room, where a camcorder was set up. Another alleged victim, referred to as "Victim-2," told investigators that Oren raped her. She says Oren gave her a cocktail, after which she felt strange and struggled to walk. Alon then took her to a bedroom to lie down. She recalls waking up to find Oren in the room. He allegedly pulled down her bathing suit and raped her while she was "physically impaired and could not move." When their parents died, Debra moved back to Florida, with no money and no place to stay, and Karen let her sister move into her home. Our hearts are broken. We are standing on ash, on scored earth! But Mom, though we are surrounded by so much darkness and uncertainty, our love burns bright. We love you, Mommy. We miss you so much. Our best friend!!" Meanwhile, the search continues as Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says investigators are "definitely closer," but are they? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After four weeks of testimony, prosecutors could soon end their sex abuse case against three real estate mogul brothers. Jurors have heard explosive testimony about alleged drugging and humiliating encounters, as the defense continues to declare the Alexander Brothers' innocence. Twins Oren and Alon Alexander and their older brother Tal have faced a 12-count indictment for sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. The Alexander brothers are accused of using their wealth and influence to create opportunities to sexually assault women. More than 40 women have come forward with allegations, and investigators are urging others who believe they were assaulted to contact authorities. Attorneys for the brothers say they plan to plead not guilty. If convicted, they face life in prison. He allegedly pulled down her bathing suit and raped her while she was "physically impaired and could not move." Austin police respond to a home in Del Valle after receiving a 911 call about a 7-year-old girl who discovered starved and locked inside a bedroom closet. Six other children are also found in the home, but police say it appears they are physically healthy. According to reports, the child was soiled and barricaded in a closet with heavy boxes blocking the door. An arrest affidavit reveals Virginia Marie Gonzales is accused of locking the 7-year-old girl in a closet for “weeks at a time.” The affidavit further states the girl’s grandmother told police that the child had trouble controlling her bladder and often ate things she shouldn’t. This allegedly led to her siblings being instructed to keep her locked in the closet. The 7-year-old was hospitalized and is now recovering. During the investigation, detectives learn about another child, Ava, who has been missing for years. Virginia Marie Gonzales, Ava‘s mother, was arrested on a charge of serious injury to a child in connection with the 7-year-old’s case. According to police, the missing now 9-year-old child was last seen when she was just 2 years old and in the custody of her mother, Virginia Marie Gonzales. Now, Gonzales has reversed her initial rejection of a plea offer. The State first offered Gonzales a 40-year prison sentence in exchange for her guilty plea. Gonzales now pleads guilty getting 25 years in jail. A mural of murdered Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska has been vandalized and graffitied with spray paint. "PLEASE VANDALIZE THIS,” the tagger scrawled. The tribute had been complete for less than two weeks before the damage. Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, came to the United States with her family to escape her war-torn country for a better life. Iryna took English classes, had a job and was making a productive life for herself, but all her aspirations were cut short by an unprovoked violent attack from a man with a criminal history. Video shows Iryna getting on the train in Charlotte, North Carolina, taking a seat, and looking at her phone quietly. Video shows a passenger sitting directly behind Iryna, who we later came to know as Carlos Brown Jr. A close-up of Brown's hands can be seen opening and unfolding the knife in order to prepare to stand up to stab Iryna. Although Iryna's hat covers a lot of her face, the shock in her eyes, along with the terror she silently expressed during her final moments of life, bleeding out, surrounded by panic, is heartbreaking to watch. The video also shows Brown, in an orange hoodie, walking the aisles of the train with blood dripping on the floor. One passenger notices blood drops and avoids stepping in them, while another witness on the phone with 911 tells them a man just stabbed a woman for no reason, and she needs help. Moments after allegedly stabbing Iryna, Brown is captured on video nonchalantly walking the platform of the train station. On the train, Brown was wearing a hoodie; now he is wearing a black t-shirt, with the now bloody hoodie wrapped around his hands. In reaction to the shocking and violent death of Iryna Zarutska, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein just signed "Iryna's Law" into effect, increasing checks on criminals getting out on bail and prohibiting cashless bail for some violent crimes and most repeat offenders. A grand jury indicted Brown for the murder of Iryna, formally charging him with first-degree murder. Brown is being held without bond in the county jail, but an order was filed for him to be committed to Central Regional Hospital. Allegedly, he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and also has a lengthy rap sheet of criminal behavior.
