They open with a bouncy "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)" before Jerry brings out one of his more poignant ballads, "To Lay Me Down." The introspective mood continues as Bobby rolls into "Lost Sailor," but things pick up speed as he moves into "Saint of Circumstance." Drums and Space follows, slowly building momentum until Phil drops a huge bass bomb leading into "The Other One" — the jamming, psychedelic rendition here is the highlight of the set. They then drift into the haunting "Stella Blue" before "Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad" carries us toward the close, punctuated by a high-energy "Satisfaction" led by Bobby and Brent Mydland. The "Brokedown Palace" encore is always a favorite sendoff. Grateful Dead Community War Memorial Auditorium Rochester, NY 4/9/1982 - Friday Two Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [6:54] ; To Lay Me Down [9:00] ; Lost Sailor [6:21] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:19] > Drums [2:34#] > Space [7:28] > The Other One [7:08] > Stella Blue [7:32] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:11] > (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction [6:37] Encore Brokedown Palace [5:14] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: https://deadshow.blogspot.com/2026/04/dead-showpodcast-for-41026.html thanks for the love and support!
We roll into the Spring Tour of 1982 on this week's Deadpod, visiting Rochester, New York, where the boys always seemed to play a great show—and this one is no exception. They open with a jumping "Alabama Getaway" that slides into a tight "Greatest Story Ever Told." From there the feel shifts from an easy‑rolling "Dire Wolf" into a bluesy "C C Rider." The band takes flight on a soaring "Bird Song" that stretches out just enough to let you really sink into the jam. They move back into the barroom with "It's All Over Now" and a bruised "Loser." Following a raucous "New Minglewood Blues," the familiar refrain of "China Cat" kicks off a joyous ride into "I Know You Rider," closing out a smartly constructed, highly satisfying first set. Grateful Dead Community War Memorial Auditorium Rochester, NY 4/9/1982 - Friday One Alabama Getaway [4:41] > Greatest Story Ever Told [3:58] Dire Wolf [3:12] > C C Rider [7:45] Bird Song [8:15] It's All Over Now [7:47] Loser [6:43] New Minglewood Blues [6:58] China Cat Sunflower [5:02] > I Know You Rider [5:23] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: https://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod040326.mp3 my thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!
Nassau Coliseum, March 12, 1992 — and the second set is where the real action is. Bobby charges out of the gate with a muscular 'Saint of Circumstance' that rolls straight into a gorgeous 'Ship of Fools', with Vince's backing vocals elevating the whole thing. Then comes 'Corrina' — percolating along until Phil takes the wheel and steers them into a reprise of 'Playin' in the Band' from the night before, a rare thread connecting two consecutive shows. Drums and Space are worth the listen on their own tonight, before Phil drops the bass bombs that detonate into 'The Other One'. Jerry answers with an emotionally raw 'Stella Blue', and the set closes on a rocking 'Sugar Magnolia'. They come back for one more — a lovely 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue', with Bruce Hornsby lending his accordion to the farewell. Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 3/12/1992 - Thursday Two Saint Of Circumstance ; Ship Of Fools > Corrina > Playing Reprise > Drums > Space > The Other One > Stella Blue > Sugar Magnolia Encore It's All Over Now, Baby Blue You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: https://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032726.mp3 "Well, I sure don't know what I going for But I'm gonna go for it for sure (that's for sure)"
This week's Deadpod drops us into the Spring 1992 tour, catching the band at the Nassau Coliseum for a rockin' first set that showcases both Phil Lesh and Bruce Hornsby — in what would turn out to be Bruce's final tour with the band. The set runs a bit short, but that was pretty typical for the latter-day Dead. No matter — the band is in fine form. Phil kicks things off leading the charge on 'Greatest Story Ever Told,' followed by a rousing 'Bertha.' 'Stagger Lee' is another Lesh showcase, though the whole band locks in beautifully by the end. 'Beat It On Down The Line' opens with a full nine-beat intro before Phil delivers a genuine surprise — a standout vocal on 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues,' one of my personal favorite Dead covers. Bruce then steps forward on a heavy, honky-tonk-tinged 'Tennessee Jed.' The boys close out the set on a high note with a spirited 'Promised Land,' Bruce adding a nice solo to send everyone home happy. This week on the Deadpod, we've got the second set from the Grateful Dead's Mardi Gras show on March 3rd, 1987. After the parade winds through, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band joins the boys for a loose and funky "Iko Iko." It takes a minute for everyone to sync up, but it's all part of the fun — you can feel how much they're enjoying themselves. The set really kicks into gear with "Saint of Circumstance," followed by a gorgeous "Terrapin Station." Out of "Drums" and "Space," the band fires up "Gimme Some Lovin'," then slides into a sweet "Wharf Rat," "Throwin' Stones," and a big "Touch of Grey" to close things out. Jerry trips up on a line during the "Brokedown Palace" encore, but the crowd — and the band — help him along. It's one of those perfectly human Dead moments that make this show fun to hear. Grateful Dead Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, CA 3/3/1987 - Tuesday Two Iko Iko [9:20] ; Saint Of Circumstance [6:53] ; Terrapin Station [12:32] > Drums [7:33] > Space [6:40] > Gimme Some Lovin' [5:05] > Wharf Rat [9:08] > Throwing Stones [8:42] > Touch Of Grey [5:34] Encore Brokedown Palace [5:26] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031326.mp3 thanks so much for your kind support!
This week we return to the post-coma Dead of early 1987 - this show took place on March 3, 1987 at the Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland. I happen to think the band, and Garcia, shows a real rebound here and hope you agree. The opening 'Quinn the Eskimo' is a perfect way to elevate the crowd's mood, and Jerry does a fine job on the vocals.. it flows into a nice 'Greatest Story Ever Told ' and Jerry again hits it with a fine 'Loser'. 'Minglewood and 'Tons of Steel' are both well performed, and Bobby does some nice jamming on a fine version of 'Cassidy' The highlight of this set has to be fhe 'Mississippi Half-Step'. I think you'll agree that this one reaches a high note, and the set closing 'Promised Land' finishes things off with some great energy. Grateful Dead Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, CA 3/3/1987 - Tuesday One The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [4:32] Greatest Story Ever Told [3:59] Loser [7:08] New Minglewood Blues [7:05] Tons Of Steel [5:14] Cassidy [6:10] Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:15] > The Promised Land [4:15] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030626.mp3 thank you for your kind support.. ..."may the four winds blow you safely home.."
This week on the Deadpod, we roll into the second set from the band's show at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA, on February 21, 1982. The set kicks off with a lively China → Rider that flows effortlessly into a spacious Estimated Prophet. The jam here has a jazzy, relaxed vibe, with Bobby laying down some especially tasteful rhythmic textures. Eyes of the World follows — played at that brisk early-'80s tempo that might not be everyone's favorite, but Garcia's soaring fills more than make up for it. After Drums and Space, the band launches into a fascinating Not Fade Away, led off by a wonderful Phil Lesh intro that gradually gathers steam as each player adds their voice to the mix. It builds into a full-on whirlwind, topped by some of Bobby's trademark calls to the crowd. A heartfelt Brokedown Palace encore closes things out beautifully after a spirited Sugar Magnolia. Grateful Dead Pauley Pavilion - University of California Los Angeles, CA 2/21/1982 - Sunday Two China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider > Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Drums > Space > Not Fade Away > Stella Blue > Sugar Magnolia Encore Brokedown Palace You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022726.mp3 Thank you so much for your kind support
Today we head back to February 1982 and the Pauley Pavilion at UCLA for a fine‑sounding tape of a very tasty Grateful Dead set. They come out of the gate with a wonderful Shakedown; Brent and Phil are all over this one, and it makes for a perfect opener. A gritty New Minglewood Blues follows, with Bobby leaning into the slide work here and again later on Little Red Rooster. Jerry is in strong voice on Friend of the Devil and a spacious Bird Song, and the set wraps up in unusual fashion with Bertha sliding straight into Man Smart (Woman Smarter) as a first‑set closer. Grateful Dead Pauley Pavilion – University of California Los Angeles, CA – 2/21/1982 – Sunday One Shakedown Street > New Minglewood Blues Friend Of The Devil Me And My Uncle > Big River Bird Song Little Red Rooster Bertha > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022026.mp3
Welcome to this week's Deadpod! We're diving into the second set from the Grateful Dead's homecoming performance at the Oakland Coliseum on February 26, 1990 — the middle night of their Mardi Gras run. The boys were clearly thrilled to be back in the Bay Area, and that energy radiates through this exceptional set. The pre-drums sequence is absolutely stellar: nearly 30 minutes of Scarlet > Fire flows seamlessly into a spirited Playing, which then blooms into the full Terrapin suite. It's the kind of sustained improvisation that reminds you why these songs belong together. Coming out of Space, the emotional arc deepens — I Need a Miracle's urgency gives way to one of Jerry's most tender Stella Blues of the era, before Bobby unleashes a joyful, rollicking Lovelight that brings everyone home. The Baby Blue encore provides the perfect denouement to a magical night. This Mardi Gras run always promised good times, and the band delivered in spades. Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA | February 26, 1990 (Monday) Set 2 Scarlet Begonias [13:02] > Fire On The Mountain [15:42] Playing In The Band [9:58] > Terrapin Station [12:54] > Drums > Space > I Need A Miracle [4:59] > Stella Blue [8:53] > Turn On Your Love Light [5:58] Encore It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [7:13] Listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021326.mp3 Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!
As we roll into February this week's Deadpod comes from the second night of the Mardi Gras run of 1990. I think the boys are in good spirits here and we have some nice treats here in set one, with more to follow in next week's second set. Bobby opens with 'Hell In A Bucket' and you can tell how much he enjoys delivering it. Following a nice 'Peggy-O' we get another spirited Bobby number with a really good 'Walkin' Blues'. 'Ramble On Rose' always picks things up, then we get some encouragement for Phil to sing, and he obliges with a great 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues'. The somewhat short set concludes with 'Music Never Stopped' into 'Don't Ease Me In'. This week I decided to go back and pick up this second set from the band's performance back on January 16, 1970 at Springer's Inn in Portland Oregon. This recording has some issues - especially during the first two numbers - the Cumberland Blues is cut both at the start and the end, and Me & My Uncle is cut at the start. I've included both out of a love of completeness and because they still sound great. Some highlights here include a wonderful 'Dire Wolf' - with an admonition from Jerry to sing along, a fine 'Uncle John's Band' and Pigpen's 'Easy Wind'. I think you'll enjoy the rest of this set as well, especiall if you are a fan of 'Anthem of the Sun'.. Honoring Bob Weir 1947-2026 This week on the Deadpod I want to conclude my presentation of the Ratdog performance that took place back on November 2, 2000 in Columbia Missouri. I'll let the music speak for itself, and hope that you enjoy this recording. I was lucky enough to meet Bob and the band this evening and the show has always had a place in my heart. Fare thee well, Ace. Bob Weir & Ratdog The Blue Note, Columbia Missouri 11/2/2000 - Thursday set 2: West L.A. RIP Bob Weir 1947-2026 The passing of Bob Weir this last week brought us all shock and sadness. Speaking for myself I wasn't ready for Ace to be gone, and I know it will hurt for a long time. Since there there have appeared countless tributes and appreciations for his talent, character and life. I won't try to add another one here. What I've decided on is to present to you this week a show that meant alot to me, that took place back when I was doing a Grateful Dead show on KOPN radio in Columbia Missouri. This show took place in an intimate venue called the Blue Note in Columbia Missouri back on November 2nd, 2000. We were thrilled to have Ratdog come to our town, and to be playing across the street from our station. I think they put on a great show and I decided to play that here on the Deadpod in its entirety this week and next as my remembrance of Bob. I hope you enjoy it. This week we have some 'Good Ol'Grateful Dead' for your listening pleasure.. This comes to us from Springer's Inn in Portland Oregon on January 16, 1970. The opening 'Casey Jones' has a number of sound problems, but bear with it the rest of the set is quite good - especially when you consider it is 55 years old.. There are a number of highlights here - the 'Black Peter' is exceptionally soulful, and Pig gives a great rap and jam in 'Hard To Handle'. I love the 'China Cat' as well - listen for Garcia before his second solo.. 'Good Lovin' and 'Dancin' are each awesome as well. Nothing needs be said for a 'Death Don't Have No Mercy' set closer... if indeed this was the end of set 1 - we don't know for sure it could have been one long set.. As we turn the calendar to 2026, we present the second set from the band's performance at the Boston Music Hall on December 1, 1973. This is a very interesting second set, with songs that you don't always associate with that second set making an appearance. They open with what is often a set closer - 'Around and Around' Then ease into some more traditional fare, with 'They Love Each Other' and 'Me & My Uncle' Things get interesting for me with 'Me and Bobby McGee' a favorite from the period, then 'Mississippi Half-Step' before we get to the real meat of set 2 with a 'Playin' In The Band> Uncle John's Band'>Playin' sandwich. a nice 'Row Jimmy folows then a rocking 'Greatest Story' and a fine 'Not Fade Away'>Goin Down the Road Feelin' Bad'. Merry Day-After-Christmas!! For your boxing and unboxing pleasure I thought this show, from the legendary year of 1973 might be just exactly perfect.. this comes to us from the Boston Music Hall from December 1, 1973. This show took place in the middle of a three show run at this famous venue, both of which have been previously commercially released. This is a nice long, first set, as was customary at the time, and includes some standout renditions. These include a nice first set 'China>Rider', a sweet 'Brokedown Palace' and a long and very nicely done 'Weather Report Suite'. Hopefully you'll agree that this is a worthy show to close out the Deadpod in 2025.. see you next year! Grateful Dead Boston Music Hall Boston, MA 12/1/1973 - Saturday Set 1: Tuning The Promised Land Sugaree Mexicali Blues Tennessee Jed Looks Like Rain China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider Big River Brokedown Palace Weather Report Suite Casey Jones You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122625.mp3 Happy New Year! .. and thanks for your generous and kind support....
This week's Deadpod brings us the second set from the band's performance in Long Beach California on December 14, 1980. This is a fine high-energy set, punctuated by guest appearances by Fora Purim, Airto and Matthew Kelly but full of outstanding renditions of some classic numbers. I am always pleasantly surprised when I get a 'Must Have Been the Roses' and really enjoy this one. This is followed by a screaming 'Estimated Prophet'. This leads into the heart of the set, a great 'Wheel' going into an amazing Drums/Space then flowing into a otherwordly 'Other One'. This combination is really special. This leads into an emotional 'Stella Blue' then the boys ramp it up again with the rocking set closing 'Around and Around' into 'Good Lovin' .. a 'Brokedown Palace' is a perfect encore after this musical performance.. This week we go back 45 years to an excellent show the band played in Long Beach California on Sunday, December 14. They open this first set with a standard 'Bertha>Greatest Story', then 'Althea' goes into a raucous 'Little Red Rooster' this one with Matthew Kelly joining in. The 'Loser' that follows is a personal favorite. The rest of the set is first rate as well, culminating in a most excellent 'Candyman>Looks Like Rain>Don't Ease Me In'. Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA 12/14/1980 - Sunday Set 1: Tuning Bertha > Greatest Story Ever Told Althea > Little Red Rooster Loser Me & My Uncle > Big River Bird Song Passenger Tuning 2 Candyman > Looks Like Rain > Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121225.mp3 Hope you are warm and safe whereever you are! thank you so much for your kind support of the Deadpod
This week we pick up the second set from the band's performance on November 14th, 1987 in Long Beach California. A strong opening finds them opening with a nice 'Maggie's Farm' into 'Cumberland Blues'.. Bobby flubs the first line of the vocals but nevertheless a great high energy start. 'Playin' In the Band' follows, while a bit short, this still contains some nice jamming. 'Terrapin Station' is very well sung and leads nicely into drums>space. Post Drums highlights include a heartfelt 'Stella Blue' and a wonderful closing 'LoveLight'. 'The Mighty Quinn' was always a great encore. Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA 11/14/1987 - Saturday Two Maggie's Farm [6:19] > Cumberland Blues [4:27] ; Playing In The Band [7:48] > Terrapin Station [12:20] > Drums [6:52#] > Space [3:56] > I Need A Miracle [8:23] > Stella Blue >Throwing Stones [9:00] > Turn On Your Love Light [6:52] Encore The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [3:57] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120525.mp3
Happy Thanksgiving! As is my tradition here on the Deadpod, Thanksgiving is the time for Acoustic Dead. This year I've found two sets of fine acoustic Dead that I thought you would enjoy. The first is from July 30, 1970 at the Matrix in San Francisco and the second from earlier that year, on May 14th, in Kirkwood Missouri. There's only one repeat in the two sets - Candyman - but I didn't think you'd mind.. I would not have the energy to do this all these years if it wasn't for your kind words and support. Thank you. I hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope you enjoy this selection of acoustic Grateful Dead.
We head to Shakedown Street on this week's Deadpod with a fine version from Long Beach California on November 14, 1987. A great start to this short first set, followed, somewhat unfortunately in my opinion, by 'Little Red Rooster;, but the boys more than make up for it with the rest of set including a nice 'Althea' and 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' and my personal highlight - Brent giving us a spirited 'Hey Pocky Way' Jerry closes things with a smokin' hot 'Deal' We will save the second set for after our Thanksgiving special next week.. Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA 11/14/1987 - Saturday One Shakedown Street [11:31] Little Red Rooster [8:04] Althea [6:31] When I Paint My Masterpiece [4:10] Hey Pocky Way [5:25] Deal [8:10] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112125.mp3 Safe travels if you are heading out next week!
We continue with the second set from the Uptown Theatre in Chicago on November 18, 1978. This one starts with a fine Scarlet>Fire, perhaps a bit shorter than some, but with some nice Garcia intensity leading into Fire. Miracle follows leading into an excellent 'He's Gone' - there's an interesting jam here unlike most you'll hear in this song. The recording really brings this one home. Instead of going right into Drums, we get Bobby and Phil leading the band into a fine 'Other One'. Once they do go into Drums, they go into a unique Ollin Arageed space.. 'Wharf Rat' then 'Sugar Magnolia ' end the set, but surprise, they do a 'One More Saturday Night' encore... Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 11/18/1978 - Saturday Two Scarlet Begonias [11:35] > Fire On The Mountain [7:05] ; I Need A Miracle [7:52] > He's Gone [11:09] > The Other One [13:29] > Drums [6:34] > Space [2:34] > Wharf Rat [9:10] > Sugar Magnolia [8:44] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:45] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111425.mp3 My thanks for your very kind support of the Deadpod
This week's Deadpod takes us to Chicago - to the Uptown Theater home of many fine Grateful Dead shows. This one is from Saturday, November 18, 1978. Our tape starts, unfortunately, with an abbreviated 'Jack Straw', but what we have shows us the energy the band came on stage with on this evening. A soulful 'Candyman' follows, then the 'Me & My Uncle>Big River' combo - marked by an exceptional Big River marked by some very nice solos by Garcia. He's just warming up however, as he follows with a great 'Sugaree' The rest of the set is equally well played, but I want to point out the beautiful 'From the Heart of Me' that Donna Jean Godchaux performs. She sings this one beautifully, and I wanted to bring us a reminder of just how great she was. I'm very saddened by her passing as I'm sure you are as well.. Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 11/18/1978 - Saturday One Jack Straw [5:37] Candyman [7:13] Me And My Uncle [2:58] > Big River [6:11] Sugaree [13:53] El Paso [4:10] Stagger Lee [6:05] It's All Over Now [6:44] From The Heart Of Me [3:29] The Music Never Stopped [7:37] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110725.mp3 "When I awoke the stars were out And shining, shining for you and me All I ever want to be Safe and warm In your arms All I have from the heart of me"
Happy Halloween!! In honor of the fact that this week's Deadpod falls on Halloween, I decided to go back and find an appropriate show that the band played on this date... I think this one from 1969 is certainly worthy of a listen.. The show starts out with a truly nasty recording of Casey Jones - I left it in for the sake of completeness, but I hope you will stick with it as the recording greatly improves after that. There is a fair bit of hiss throughout but nevertheless this is a wonderful artifact of the young Grateful Dead.. The Cryptical>Drums>OtherOne>Cryptical has a wild drum segment that is great fun, and the China>Rider has a very nice transition jam between them. The second set highlights include a Pigpen taking over at the end here, with the last three songs showcasing his blues delivery. 'Easy Wind' was still relatively new - this is the 7th time played, and the tape ends with a massive 30+minute Lovelight ;) Grateful Dead 10/31/69 San Jose State University San Jose, CA One: Casey Jones Yellow Dog Story Dire Wolf It Hurts Me Too Cryptical Envelopment> Drums> The Other One> Cryptical Envelopment> 2 China Cat Sunflower> Jam> I Know You Rider Two: High Time Sittin' On Top Of The World Next Time You See Me> Easy Wind Turn On Your Lovelight COMMENTS Casey Jones cuts in just after the first notes of the tune. Lovelight cuts off during the final flourishes. DeadBase IX lists a Mama Tried after I Know You Rider. We continue with the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance at the Moody Coliseum in Dallas Texas back on Saturday, October 15, 1977. The 'Samson and Delilah' opener is a great start to a fine set.. Donna follows with a nice version of 'Sunrise'. The 'Terrapin Station' that follows is not as monumental in its buildup as some but is a fine delivery by Garcia. The meat of this set comes with a very nice 'Saint Stephen' into 'Not Fade Away' into a sweet 'Stella Blue'.. the band then rolls into a rockin' 'Sugar Magnolia' to close the second set. They return for a double encore, with 'Truckin' leading into the obligatory, but rockin' 'One More Saturday Night'.. Grateful Dead Moody Coliseum - Southern Methodist University Dallas, TX 10/15/1977 - Saturday Two Samson And Delilah [7:02] ; Sunrise [3:41] ; Terrapin Station [11:03] > Saint Stephen [8:19] > Not Fade Away [10:42] > Stella Blue [9:17] > Sugar Magnolia [11:07] Encore Truckin' [8:09] > One More Saturday Night [4:53] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102425.mp3 Thanks so much for your kind support!
This week we join the Dead as they play the last show of a 3 show run in Texas during October 1977. This one takes place on the campus of SMU in Dallas Texas on October 15. The first set opens with a spirited 'Bertha' into 'Good Lovin'. They move into a more laid back mood with 'They Love Each Other' then the 'Mama Tried' into 'Big River' ramps things bck up. A nice 'Ramble on Rose' is marred here with a nasty cut..sorry about that. The 'Peggy O' that follows 'Looks Like Rain' has some very nice vocals, and the set-closing 'Let It Grow' has some nice jamming to close the set. Grateful Dead Moody Coliseum - Southern Methodist University Dallas, TX 10/15/1977 - Saturday One Bertha--> (7:19) Good Lovin' (7:55) They Love Each Other (8:32) Mama Tried--> (2:34) Big River (6:05) Ramble On Rose// (6:00) Looks Like Rain (9:17) Peggy-O (7:36) Let It Grow (11:27) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101725.mp3 I hope you enjoy the show.. btw - if you are on facebook you can join our discussion there at: the Deadpod group. I'm always looking for inspiration :)
http://deadshow.blogspot.com This week here on the Deadpod is a fine second set from the band's show over in London England on October 4, 1981. I'm sure you'll agree that this is a fine performance by the boys.. Some of the highlights are a smokin' Samson and Delilah, the jam between Scarlet and Fire, and an interesting 'Lost Sailor'. Drums is notable for the 'Spanish Jam' leading into a fine 'Other One'. All this is captured in a fine recording.. Grateful Dead Rainbow Theatre London, England 10/4/1981 - Sunday Two Cold Rain And Snow [6:25] > Samson And Delilah [7:#09] Scarlet Begonias [12:20] > Fire On The Mountain [11:36] Lost Sailor [7:52] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:#21] > Space [1:58] > Drums [4:36#] > Space [11:21] > The Other One [7:54] > Wharf Rat [9:47] > Sugar Magnolia [8:06] Encore Don't Ease Me In [3:11] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101025.mp3 Never miss a Sunday show!
This week the Deadpod travels to London England, to the Rainbow Theater, where the band played eight wonderful shows during 1981. This was the next to last performance at the Rainbow, on October 4, 1981. This recording really highlights Brent and Garcia.. its a bright and open recording I think you'll enjoy. Some of the highlights are the Jack-A-Roe, Beat It On Down the Line, and Brown Eyed Women that come in the middle of the set, but there are really no clunkers here in my opinion. The set closing Deal is a smoker as always... Grateful Dead Rainbow Theatre London, England 10/4/1981 - Sunday One Jack Straw [5:58] Friend Of The Devil [8:57] > El Paso [4:54] Jack-A-Roe [4:30] Beat It On Down The Line [2:56] Brown Eyed Women[5:02] New Minglewood Blues [5:#58] Row Jimmy [10:57] Let It Grow [11:59]> Deal [8:42] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100325.mp3 My thanks for your kind support, hope you enjoy the show!
Here's some old-fashioned, good ol' Grateful Dead for you.. This week from September 18, 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City.. we have a partial soundboard tape that has somehow survived these years to bring us back to what it was like to hear the boys in that magical space. The first two songs, Truckin' and Black Peter, are from the acoustic set - with Pigpen on piano on Truckin' and David Nelson mandolin on Black Peter... The end of the electric set which we have here is blessed with a rare 'Operator' and two really well jammed out numbers - Dancin' in the Streets and Good Lovin'. This is a beautiful recording .. soak it up. Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 1970-09-18 - Friday Acoustic Set 01. Truckin' 02. Black Peter End of Electric Set 03. Me & My Uncle 04. This week I have the pleasure of presenting this second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on September 11, 1981. They are energized throughout.. the opening Stranger builds until they go into a unique 'Franklin's Tower'. Garcia is firing here. Things calm a bit with the 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' but the 'He's Gone' that follows is first rate. Check out the jam at the end of 'Truckin' for some wonderful jamming into Drums. Post-drums is equally enjoyable with a fine 'Other One' leading into a great 'Morning Dew'. The 'Johnny B Goode' set closer seems appropriate.. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 9/11/1981 - Friday Two Feel Like A Stranger [7:15] > Franklin's Tower [13:33] Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:34] He's Gone [12:35] > Truckin' (1) [12:18] > Drums [8:09] > Space [5:29] > The Other One [11:09] > Morning Dew [10:55] > Johnny B. We celebrate the 82nd birthday of Mickey Hart this week with a great show that took place back on his 38th birthday at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California. The recording starts with Joan Baez regaling Mickey with a 'Happy Birthday' chorus.. once we put that behind us we are led into a hot 'Minglewood' and then a quite nice 'They Love Each Other'. They amp it up a bit with a 'Mama Tried>Mexicali' then Jerry brings out 'Candyman', which leads into a 'Little Red Rooster'. A rocking 'Cumberland Blues' leads into a 'Beat It on Down the Line' and the audience tape lets us hear the crowd loving it.. 'Althea' that follows may be the highlight of the set, but the boys are not done here, with a 'Sailor>Saint' and 'Deal' to close out the first set.... Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 9/11/1981 - Friday Set 1: Banter (Happy Birthday Mickey!) This week on the Deadpod we have the second set from the band's performance at the beautiful Greek Theater in Berkeley California on August 18, 1989. This is pretty classic Dead for this high water period of the band, with a groovin' 'Iko Iko' to open things up, followed by the mellow 'Looks Like Rain'. Jerry brings out a classic 'Terrapin Station' leading into a fine Drums and Space. I love the 'Crazy Fingers' out of space, and the 'Stella Blue' in the ballad slot hits just right. Following the rockin' 'Lovelight' we are treated to a double encore - with 'And We Bid You Goodnight' following a nice 'Black Muddy River'. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 8/18/1989 - Friday Two Iko Iko [5:52] Looks Like Rain [8:45] Terrapin Station [12:13] > Drums [12:46] > Space [8:32] > Crazy Fingers [8:49] > I Need A Miracle [4:35] > Stella Blue [8:43] > Throwing Stones [8:39] > Turn On Your Love Light [6:22] Encore Black Muddy River [6:09] And We Bid You Good Night [2:30] (1) Comments Rex Foundation Benefit. Happy Labor Day Weekend! I hope that this first set from the 2nd night of a 3 night Rex Benefit run at the Greek Theater is a great start to your holiday! This is a fine recording of the band during one of their more interesting periods. 'Cold Rain and Snow' is always a great opener and I loved the 'Row Jimmy';. I even found the Minglewood to be quite good... and the first set Victim is unusual and goes into a very nice 'Bird Song'. The second set which we'll hear next week is more improvisational, but I hope you enjoy this fine first set.. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 8/18/1989 - Friday One Cold Rain And Snow [6:11] New Minglewood Blues [7:21] Row Jimmy [9:07] When I Paint My Masterpiece [5:02] Built To Last [4:39] Victim Or The Crime [6:01] Bird Song [11:23] The Promised Land [4:23] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod082925.mp3 I hope you have a safe and fun holiday... thanks so much for your support!
We continue this week with the second set from August 5, 1979 at Oakland California. This set starts with a fine 'Scarlet>Fire' - a warning there is a cut in the Scarlet (sadly there are several on this tape but I feel that the show still deserves your attention). The transition to 'Fire' is wonderful, as is Garcia's solo there. 'Estimated' and 'Eyes of the World' follow, then we are treated with Hamza el-Din in Drums, and a nice transition into 'Not Fade Away'. The notable 3 encores really stand out, sadly there is another cut at the end of 'Johnny B Goode' .. I hope you enjoy it ! Grateful Dead Oakland Auditorium Oakland, CA 8/5/1979 - Sunday Two Scarlet Begonias [10:48] > Fire On The Mountain [12:32] ; Estimated Prophet [11:20] > Eyes Of The World [9:59] > Drums [4:#40] > Ollin Arrageed (1) [9:30] > Space [2:18] > Not Fade Away [12:37] > Wharf Rat [9:41] > Around And Around [7:46] Encore Bertha [6:46] > Good Lovin' [7:04] ; Johnny B. The dog days of August are upon us.. but hopefully this week's Deadpod can see us through.. this is a good one from August 5, 1979 in Oakland. The first set certainly starts out rather laid back and so is perhaps fitting for the time... check out the transition from 'Franklin's' into 'Me & My Uncle'.. The set is well played in my opinion and the recording is good - I will tell you there is a brutal cut at the end of the 'Althea' .. ouch .. the transition from 'Lost Sailor' into 'Althea' is sweet however.. Grateful Dead Oakland Auditorium Oakland, CA 8/5/1979 - Sunday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:09] > Franklin's Tower [11:06] > Me And My Uncle [3:12] > Big River [5:50] Candyman [7:08] It's All Over Now [9:10] Brown Eyed Women [5:21] Lost Sailor [6:38] > Althea [9:15] The Promised Land [4:08] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081525.mp3 Stay cool and be kind ;)
Hey Now! Wasn't sure I could get this one out, but here goes :) This is the second set from the band's performance on August 12, 1972 at Sacramento California. I think you'll enjoy this set, there is some fine jamming here.. the opening GSET, does have the first frew notes cut.. Ramble on Rose, follows and Beat It Down the Line.. including some chatter :) The heart of the set comes as the following He's Gone goes into Drums and then into a roaring 'Other One'.. this is a beautiful set culminating in a 'Black Peter' (the only time Black Peter appeared seg'd into an Other One). The 'Truckin' that follows is a highlight as well. Hope you enjoy! \ Grateful Dead Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Sacramento, CA 8/12/1972 - Saturday Two Greatest Story Ever Told [#5:10] Ramble On Rose [5:51] Beat It On Down The Line [3:07] He's Gone [8:53] > Drums [2:48] > The Other One [16:45] > Black Peter [8:54] > The Other One [3:45] Truckin' [11:44] Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [6:05] > Sugar Magnolia [3:21#] Encore One More Saturday Night You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080825.mp3 The Days Between are almost over.. but our love is real and not fade away!
Here we are - Jerry's Birthday and the start of the Days Between - as well as the day of the first of the GD 60 concerts out in San Francisco! I do envy all those able to attend! In the meantime we have a fine show from August of 1972 to start the celebrations on this week's Deadpod. This comes from Sacramento California on August 12, 1972. We will listen to the long first set this week - then the second set when I return in two weeks. I have to be gone next week and due to the constraints of posting on my podcast host I will be unable to have another Deadpod ready for next Friday. You will find lots to enjoy here - Keith and Donna are still settling in as the band adjusts to no Pigpen, but there is plenty of great music here. I will simply call your attention to the fine jazzy 'Bird Song' and of course the 'Playin' In the Band'. There is a rare 1st set 'Stella Blue' and plenty of rocking here as well. The band is also quite chatty which is always fun to hear. Grateful Dead Sacramento Memorial Auditorium Sacramento, CA 8/12/1972 - Saturday One The Promised Land [2:54] Sugaree [7:16] Me And My Uncle [2:57] Bird Song [10:25] Black Throated Wind [6:31] Deal [5:14] El Paso [2:51#] Tennessee Jed [#2:33] Playing In The Band [12:30] Big Railroad Blues [4:05] Cumberland Blues [6:42] Stella Blue [7:26] Jack Straw [#3:38] Casey Jones [6:26] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080125.mp3 Thank you my friends for your kind support.
This week the Deadpod continues with the second set from the band's performance on July 21, 1990 at the World Music Theater in Tinley Park IL. A fine Scarlet>Fire opens things up then the first of a continuing 'Playin In the Band' theme that will reoccur thoughout the evening. The post-drums, my favorite here, is highlighted with a rare 'Crazy Fingers' and a 'Dear Mr. Fantasy', The Quinn the Eskimo encore is always a favorite! I wasn't sure I'd be up to posting this week - but while I can't type much I'm happy to bring you this fine set of Grateful Dead music.. Here's one from the summer of 1990 - not much that hasn't been released already but this is a fine set at a terrible venue.. still a nice recording and i hope you enjoy it. This week we continue with the second set from the Grateful Dead's final show at the Fillmore West on July 2, 1971 This starts out with an unusual 'Sugar Magnolia' opener, going into a sweet 'Sing Me Back Home'.. after a short "Mama Tried' we are thrown into a whirlwind with a great 'Cryptical>Drums>Other One', with the Other One being dedicated to Owsley who was incarcerated at the time.. while this is perhaps the highlight of this set, the closing 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road>Not Fade Away' shows the band at their rocking best. Jerry prefaces the 'Johnny B Goode' encore with a 'Here's the one it's all about' :) Grateful Dead Fillmore West San Francisco, CA 7/2/1971 - Friday Two Sugar Magnolia [6:41] Sing Me Back Home [9:48] Mama Tried [2:47] Cryptical Envelopment [2:02] > Drums [5:16] > The Other One [15:40] Big Boss Man [5:18] Casey Jones [5:36] Not Fade Away [3:49] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:22] > Jam [1:09] > Not Fade Away [3:35] Encore Johnny B. Happy Independence Day! Here's a treat to help you celebrate - the final performance of the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West bck on July 2, 1971. This fine recording captures the energy and enthusiasm of their performance that night. These first set songs are shorter, as was the norm during 1971but nevertheless I'm certain you'll enjoy them. Standouts include a great 'Me & Bobby McGee', a really fun version of 'The Rub', a somewhat slower 'Deal' and fo course the set-closing 'Good Lovin'. We'll have the second set next week.. Here is the second set of the band's performance at the Forum in Inglewood California on June 4, 1977. A long and fine set of music, luckily for us captured by a nice audience recording, results in one of the few Spring '77 shows that hasn't been commercially released. This show features quite a few 'big' numbers - Estimated>Eyes, Terrapin, Playin in the Band, Franklin's Tower.. The Playin' sandwich is really nicely done,, as is the transitions throughout the set. I hope you enjoy this one, my advice is to turn it up! This week the Deadpod goes back to a crazy show that happened back on June 21, 1971, which was only the band's second performance in Europe. Apparently they were invited to a outdoor festival in France by a rich fashion designer, who paid for the their transport, equipment and entourage to travel to Europe to play at this free festival. Well they were put in up some kind of nice Chateau, and the festival was rained out with a huge downpour. They sat around for a day or two and decided to break out the instruments and play at the grounds of the Chateau for the locals and those who traveled with them. The result is what we have here.. apparently the Chateau had quite a nice wine cellar which was liberated for the event and the audience spent a good deal of the time throwing each other into the pool.. I'm not at all sure that there were 'sets' in this show - this is how deadlists.com broke it down so I went with that - we'll hear the remainder next week.. This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982. A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. While it is a Saturday show, we get a 'U.S. Blues' encore ! This week we venture back to a favorite venue, the Greek Theater at the University of California at Berkeley for the middle show of a three night run in the spring of 1982. Astute listeners will remember that I played the first night of this run just about a year ago, and this show is at least equally worth hearing.. The band treats us to a 'Jack Straw' opener, which then goes into a nice long 'Sugaree' with plenty of fireworks from Garcia. 'Cassidy' follows, then a funky 'Tennessee Jed' into a 'New New Minglewood Blues'. As always, the 'Cumberland Blues' that follows is a rocker, but the 'Lazy Lighting>Supplication' combo is no slouch! The set closes with a smokin' hot 'Deal'. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/22/1982 - Saturday Set 1: Jack Straw > Sugaree Cassidy Tennessee Jed > New New Minglewood Blues Cumberland Blues Lazy Lightning > Supplication Deal You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052325.mp3 home cooking is always best....
This week's Deadpod takes us to Hanover New Hampshire, where the band put on a fine show back on May 5, 1978. On a fine recording we get a nice rendition of the first set, with some excellent versions of 'Candyman', 'They Love Each Other' and 'Dire Wolf'. The band revs it up as always for 'Passenger', and the closing 'Lazy Lightning>Supplication' duo is outstanding as well. We'll hear set 2 next week.. Grateful Dead Thompson Arena - Dartmouth College Hanover, NH 5/5/1978 - Friday One The Promised Land [4:22] Dire Wolf [4:01] Cassidy [4:41] Candyman [6:40] El Paso [4:22] They Love Each Other [7:16] Passenger [5:00#] Brown Eyed Women [5:15] Lazy Lightnin' [3:38] > Supplication [5:34] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050925.mp3 Many thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!
This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982. This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, and they rock out with 'Around and Around'; into a killer 'One More Saturday Night'. You might notice there are no stops between these second set songs on this night. The encore, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' has some great Garcia vocals.. Grateful Dead Hartford Civic Center Hartford, CT 4/17/1982 - Saturday Two Shakedown Street [15:03] > Lost Sailor [7:20] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:07] > Jam [5:28] > Drums [5:28#] > Space [8:50] > Uncle John's Band [9:00] > Not Fade Away [7:58] > Wharf Rat [9:41] > Around And Around [3:59] > One More Saturday Night [4:21] Encore It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [6:59] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050225.mp3 hope you have a wonderful first week of May!!
This week on the Deadpod a fine show from the spring of 1982, one often overlooked due to the notoriety of the next night's performance. This show, from April 17, 1982 in Hartford Connecticut features quite a nice first set, with fine versions of Bird Song and Jack-A-Roe (which was still relatively new at the time). I also would call your attention to the arrangement of El Paso, which is played at a much slower tempo than the usual polka arrangement, and benefits from that difference, I think. Also an interesting set closer here with 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter'. The first two songs in this set are from an audience source, the rest come from a soundboard. Grateful Dead Hartford Civic Center Hartford, CT 4/17/1982 - Saturday One New Minglewood Blues [7:46] > Sugaree [12:10] > El Paso [5:19] Jack-A-Roe [4:48] Little Red Rooster [8:51] Tennessee Jed [8:44] It's All Over Now [8:18] Bird Song [9:27] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:44] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042525.mp3 My thanks for your support.
What a classic set list we have on this week's Deadpod. While this show took place back in 1991, none of the songs debuted earlier than 1972. Better yet, they are all played with joy and authority reminiscent of earlier periods in the band's history. The tight opening China>Rider portends a great second set, and we are not disappointed for following this we have a fine 'Looks Like Rain' highlighted by some Healy echo on Bobby's vocals, then Garcia leads the ensemble into a long and dreamy 'Dark Star. The Star goes seamlessly into an interesting drums and space but then returns before leading into a continuation of 'Playin' In the Band' from the previous evening. Jerry then brings out 'Black Peter' in the ballad spot and delivers a soulful rendition. The set closing 'Lovelight' brings the crowd one last chance to shake their bones. Jerry returns for a great encore choice: 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue'. Grateful Dead 1991-04-01 Greensboro Coliseum - Greensboro, NC Two China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider Looks Like Rain Dark Star [22:37] > Drums [8:20] > Space [9:46] > Dark Star [1:16] > Playing In The Band [3:28] > Black Peter Turn On Your Love Light Encore It's All Over Now, Baby Blue You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041125.mp3 "You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast"
An outstanding performance awaits on this week's Deadpod as we usher in the month of April with a memorable set from April Fools' Day, 1991 at Greensboro, North Carolina. The band roars into a fantastic version of 'Jack Straw' and I for one, love the presence of Hornsby here and throughout the set. They dovetail into a nice version of 'Peggy-O' and Jerry is in fine form here. Bobby takes over for a rockin' version of 'It's All Over Now'; again Hornsby's contributions on the keyboard adds great effect. Jerry follows with a soulful 'Candyman' and Phil brings out 'Just LIke Tom Thumb's Blues' for the first time since Brent passed. They mesh wonderfully to bring us a fine version of 'Picasso Moon', then close the set with a magnificent 'Bird Song' Grateful Dead 1991-04-01 Greensboro Coliseum - Greensboro, NC Set 1: Jack Straw > Peggy-O It's All Over Now Candyman Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues Picasso Moon Bird Song You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod040425.mp3 my thanks for your generous support of the Deadpod!
This week we're happy to present the second set from the band's performance back on March 22, 1973 at Utica New York. The set starts with a rockin' 'Big River' and then the early 'Wave That Flag' and 'Me & My Uncle' before getting down to business with a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. The heart of the set follows with long jazzy versions of 'Truckin', 'The Other One' and 'Eyes of the World'. 'China Doll' always offers a sweet soulful splashdown as they end the set with the 'Sugar Magnolia' There were apparently 2 encores, but we only have one on tape, 'One More Saturday Night', nevertheless there is a heaping measure of prime Grateful Dead here, and I hope you enjoy.. Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/22/1973 - Thursday Two Big River [4:20] Wave That Flag [5:27] Me And My Uncle [2:54] Here Comes Sunshine [9:09] Truckin' [13:56] > The Other One [19:21] > Eyes Of The World [15:01] > China Doll [6:21] Sugar Magnolia Encore One More Saturday Night Casey Jones (Missing) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032825.mp3 May March go out like a lamb for you :)
At the risk of featuring too many sets from this period I decided to bring you this long, wonderful first set from March 22, 1973. While most of these songs don't feature stratospheric jams, they are quite well played in my opinion, and this set does include a truly beautiful 'Bird Song' and a great ending with 'China->Rider- >Playin' In the Band' There are two sources used, the majority is provided by a Betty Cantor board, probably one that was in a group that suffered water damage and mold - the missing reel was probably thrown away.. The missing segment here, starting with 'China Cat' is from a Dick Latvala cassette. The fire marshall was apparently giving the band a hard time and threatening to shut the show down, which accounts for some of the warnings about keeping the aisle clear.. Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/22/1973 - Thursday One [1:43:22] The Promised Land [2:58] Sugaree [7:34] Mexicali Blues [3:23] They Love Each Other [5:09] Looks Like Rain [7:11] Deal [4:32] Beat It On Down The Line [3:07] Bird Song [11:26] Jack Straw [4:32] Box Of Rain [4:38] You Ain't Woman Enough [3:00] The Race Is On [2:54] Row Jimmy [7:44] El Paso [4:15] China Cat Sunflower [6:02] > Jam [1:48] > I Know You Rider [5:08] Playing In The Band [15:01] You can listen to this week's Dead here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032125.mp3 As always thanks for your kind support.
A roaring Scarlet>Fire leads off this week's Deadpod from the second set of the band's performance at the Rainbow Theater in London England on March 20, 1981. They keep up the momentum throughout, going into a nice Sailor>Saint, then slowing things down with a beautiful He's Gone.. the transition to Drums is worthy of note, as is the transition, led by Phil Lesh, into a rousing Truckin' that leads off the post-drums segment. Wharf Rat is heartfelt and emotional, but they lead us back into some serious rockin' with Around and Around and Johnny B. Goode, not to mention a nice U.S. Blues encore. Grateful Dead Rainbow Theatre London, England 3/20/1981 - Friday Two Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > He's Gone > Drums > Space > Truckin' > Wharf Rat > Around And Around > Johnny B. This week's Deadpod takes us across the pond to London, where the band kicked off their Spring European tour of 1981 on March 20 at the Rainbow Theater. They come out smoking on 'Feel Like A Stranger' and you know they were looking forward to this.. 'Friend of the Devil' which follows is played leisurely, they are in no hurry to get through this evening. 'C.C. Rider' follows with a bit of the blues.. This tape sounds wonderful, and all these tunes have a great treatment.. I'm a sucker for a great 'Loser' and this one doesn't disappoint, nor does 'Candyman'.. the set closing 'Deal' is incendiary.. Grateful Dead Rainbow Theatre London, England 3/20/1981 - Friday One Feel Like A Stranger Banter (Bobby's Joke) Friend Of The Devil C.C. This week on the Deadpod we have the pleasure of listening to the second set from the band's performance on February 17, 1973 in St. Paul Minnesota.. This set begins with a nicely jammed out 'Truckin' followed by 'Row Jimmy' and appropriately, 'Big River'.. Donna follows with a 'You Ain't Woman Enough' but that leads us into the heart of this set, an exquisitely crafted trifecta of 'Here Comes Sunshine' into 'China Cat Sunflower' and 'I Know You Rider'.. you definitely need this one.. the rest of the set is more straight ahead rocking Dead, culminating in a 'Saturday Night' closer and a 'Casey Jones' encore.. watch for Weir's screeching in the 'Not Fade Away' reprise.. :) Grateful Dead St. Paul Auditorium St. Paul, MN 2/17/1973 - Saturday Two Truckin' [12:15] Row Jimmy Big River [4:16] You Ain't Woman Enough Here Comes Sunshine [7:52] > China Cat Sunflower [7:52] > I Know You Rider [4:07#] Around And Around Not Fade Away [4:12] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:#16] > Not Fade Away [3:07] One More Saturday Night Encore Casey Jones [6:16] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022825.mp3 Hope you enjoy the ride!
This week's Deadpod takes us back to the early days of 1973, this one was played in St. Paul Minnesota. This was when they were figuring out the wall of sound, and the first part of set 1 suffers from several sound issues as they try to dial in the mix, most notably in a bad start with a 'Promised Land' that suffers greatly. Don't let that scare you off from the rest of this long set. There is plenty of outstanding renditions here, especially from 'Loose Lucy' on culminating in an excellent 'Playin In the Band' to close the set. A surprise is to hear 'He's Gone' in the second slot here.. Happy Valentine's Everyone! This week on the Deadpod we conclude the band's performance from February 19, 1982 in San Diego CA. Again, this comes from an audience tape so while the fidelity isn't quite up to soundboard levels, it does give you a great sense of being there.. The pre-drums portion of the set is well played, with the highlight being a sweet Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance. The killer portion of this set comes as Drums ends, the band goes into a great Other One -- Phil really seems to be enjoying this one as he leads the charge throughout.. A sweet Stella Blue follows then an unusual ending as instead of Around and Around we get Man Smart, Woman Smarter into Johnny B. Goode not as the encore but as the set closer. The US Blues encore is a snappy ending to the enening.. Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 2/19/1982 - Friday Two Alabama Getaway [5:41] > The Promised Land [4:09] Ship Of Fools [7:39] Lost Sailor [6:54] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:44] > Jam [5:13] > Drums [10:55] > Space [8:05] > The Other One [10:33] > Stella Blue [9:47] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:27] > Johnny B. This week's Deadpod again features an audience recording - this time of the performance on February 19, 1982 in San Diego California. This, the third performance of 1982 finds the boys finding their groove, with a hot opening 'Bertha', a great 'Dire Wolf' and of course 'Althea'. While the vocals are sometimes a little far back on this audience recording, you can't say the same for Garcia's guitar -it is outfront and I really enjoyed hearing him on this tape - I hope you enjoy it as well! Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 2/19/1982 - Friday One Bertha [6:53] > Greatest Story Ever Told [3:49] Dire Wolf [3:24] Little Red Rooster [8:28] Brown Eyed Women [5:21] Cassidy [4:58] Candyman [6:22] > El Paso [#5:13] Althea [7:39] New Minglewood Blues [6:45] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod020725.mp3 a nice way to remove yourself from the world for an hour....
This week we continue with the second set from the band's performance at Shea's Theater in Buffalo, NY on January 20, 1979. This set picks up steam just before drums with a powerful 'Other One' which gets picked up again after drums and space and leads into a rare (for the period) 'Dark Star' which has some wild explorations. The band rocks it out afterwards with a 'Not Fade Away' into 'Sugar Magnolia'. No Donna at this show. Grateful Dead Shea's Theatre Buffalo, NY 1/20/1979 - Saturday Two I Need A Miracle [5:06] > Bertha [6:53] > Good Lovin' [7:07] Loser [7:22] Estimated Prophet [12:37] > The Other One [8:19] > Drums [10:#01] > Space [2:14] > The Other One [2:30] > Dark Star [9:17] > Not Fade Away [5:02] > Sugar Magnolia [8:17] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:41] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod013125.mp3 There's a little more light every day :) thanks for your kind support!
This week's Deadpod features a great audience recording of a fabulous show by the late Jerry Moore..this is from January 20, 1979 at Shea's Theater in Buffalo New York. I think this is a great first set... all of these are performed so very well. I especially love the tone of Garcia's work on 'Sugaree' and 'It's All Over Now'.. at times the vocals are a little low in the mix, but in the words of Mickey Hart - turn it up! :) The rest of this set is nothing to sneeze at either, especially the smoking hot 'Jack Straw' to close it out.. One note .. apparently the show started some 2 hours late ;) Grateful Dead Shea's Theatre Buffalo, NY 1/20/1979 - Saturday One The Promised Land [4:21] Sugaree [11:45] El Paso [4:10] Peggy-O [8:12] It's All Over Now [7:41] Jack-A-Roe [4:31] New Minglewood Blues [5:35] Stagger Lee [6:46] Jack Straw [5:32] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012425.mp3 I hope you enjoy it! and thanks for your kind support!!
This week's Deadpod features the second set from January 18, 1979 at Providence Rhode Island. This is a rather unique second set as there is no drums/space segment here, unique since the band started introducing them as a matter of course back in the spring of 1978. It would be the last show without one for a long time. It's a solid show, in my opinion, the highlight being a raucous 'Trucking' that even includes Phil singing, and a solid 'Other One'. Hope you enjoy it.. Grateful Dead Providence Civic Center Providence, RI 1/18/1979 - Thursday Two I Need A Miracle [6:14] > Bertha [6:58] > Good Lovin' [6:41] > From The Heart Of Me [3:45] Ship Of Fools [8:04] He's Gone [12:33] > Truckin' [10:02] > The Other One [11:#13] > Wharf Rat [10:03] > Around And Around [7:13] Encore U.S. Blues [5:16] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011725.mp3 Thank you friends for your kind support of the Deadpod
This week's Deadpod features one of the January shows in the Grateful Dead's history - this one from January 18, 1979 in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a nice first set, energetic, especially for the time period (in a month Keith Godchaux would be leaving), and features some nice versions. I am especially fond of the 'Cassidy' here but there are several excellent tunes in this first set. Grateful Dead Providence Civic Center Providence, RI 1/18/1979 - Thursday One The Promised Land [4:22] They Love Each Other [7:31] Mama Tried [2:45] > Mexicali Blues [4:10] Friend Of The Devil [8:10] Cassidy [4:50] Jack-A-Roe [4:38] Looks Like Rain [7:04] Ramble On Rose [8:15] New Minglewood Blues [5:29] Deal [6:47] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011025.mp3 Hope this finds you well and out of harm's way.... thank you for your kind support!
On this first Friday of 2025, we continue with the conclusion of the Grateful Dead's New Year's Eve concert from December 31, 1971 at Winterland in San Francisco. A long, fun if somewhat sloppy at times show, the enjoyment the band was having is evident throughout.. After a Bill Graham intro they go into Truckin' then Billy really goes off as they go into a Other One jam, then quite interestingly enough into Me & My Uncle before going back into The Other One.. Some other highlights here include the first ever version of Big River, and the last Pigpen version of 'The Same Thing' which the band would not bring back for 20 years... There is some great high energy jamming in the 2nd half of the set, which apparently went on until 3:45 AM. Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/31/1971 - Friday Two Truckin' [8:45] > Drums [3:07] > The Other One Jam [6:01] > Me And My Uncle [2:50] > The Other One [10:19] Space [1:53] > Black Peter [8:38] Big River [3:32] The Same Thing [7:22] Ramble On Rose [5:45] Sugar Magnolia [6:42] Not Fade Away [6:09] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:08] > Not Fade Away [3:00] Encore Casey Jones [5:24] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010325.mp3 My sincere thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod! Here's to a healthy and happy 2025!
Happy New Year! ... but this NYE set by the Dead should put you in the mood to say goodbye to 2024 and to ring in a brand new 2025... This show occurred at an important turning point for the Dead, as they moved forward with many 'new' tunes and with Keith and Donna as members of the band (Donna makes her vocal debut here on 'One More Saturday Night'). The sound on this FM broadcast is generally very good and the band is tight. The boys play here with a great youthful enthusiasm.. They open with 'Dancin' In the Streets' which they wouldn't play again until June of 76.. This is a long and fun first set, clocking in at over 90 minutes.. Pig has some great moments here - Mr. Charlie, Chinatown Shuffle and Next Time You See Me are great.. All in all a great first set, we'll hear set 2 next week.. Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/31/1971 - Friday One Dancing In The Street [#8:29] Mr. Charlie [3:38] Brown Eyed Women [4:22] Beat It On Down The Line [2:56] You Win Again [3:36] Jack Straw [4:31] Sugaree [7:01] El Paso [4:14]> Chinatown Shuffle [2:35] Tennessee Jed [6:41] Mexicali Blues [3:16] China Cat Sunflower [4:40] > I Know You Rider [5:18] Next Time You See Me [4:30] Playing In The Band [6:09] Loser [6:15] One More Saturday Night (1) [4:23#] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122724.mp3 Thanks for your support this year.. it means alot.. Here's a bit of a Christmas present from the Deadpod - a great second set from December 12, 1973 at the Omni in Atlanta. This features a fine combination of classic tunes and some unusual combos (see Mississipi Half-Step into Me & Bobby McGee, as well as Wharf Rat> Me & My Uncle>Eyes). All the songs here are first rate - the China >Rider is wonderful as is the GSET.. then we get a complete Weather Report Suite..Eyes of the World into Morning Dew is one for the ages.. Then, after this massive set, I've included the soundcheck for this show, which has some really fun versions and even some Holiday sounds! I hope you enjoy! This week's Deadpod takes us down south to Atlanta Georgia, where the Dead played the first of 36 shows at the Omni back on December 12, 1973. This long and very tasty first set features many of the classics, all played quite well. It features only the second time that 'Peggy-O' was played, great sound throughout, and a very long and spacey 'Playin' In the Band' to end this first set. Next week we'll play both set 2 and the soundchecks which are amazing in themselves.. We welcome December this week by returning to the second set of the band's performance at the Golden Hall in San Diego on November 24, 1979. This set has an upbeat beginning with 'Alabama Getaway' going into a classic 'Greatest Story Every Told' - listen for Phil in that wild transition. 'Ship of Fools' follows, with Jerry giving us a find rendition complete with some extended soloing where it doesn't usually occur. 'Terrapin Station' follows, leading into a long and interesting 'Playin In the Band '. Drums goes into a short Space, then we're treated to 'Sailor>Saint', followed by a fine 'Wharf Rat'. The boys then rock it up with a good 'Sugar Magnolia' and the obligatory 'One More Saturday Night' encore. Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 11/24/1979 - Saturday Two Alabama Getaway [7:22] > Greatest Story Ever Told [5:07] Ship Of Fools [9:55] Terrapin Station [12:20] > Playing In The Band [14:23] > Drums > Space [1:47] > Lost Sailor [6:10] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:27] > Wharf Rat [9:27] > Sugar Magnolia [8:06] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:46] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120624.mp3 Hope this finds you warm and dry! Happy Thanksgiving As is the custom here on the Deadpod, this Thanksgiving we feature an acoustic set and I think we are especially fortunate this year as this set is one of the very best such sets from 1970. From September 20, 1970 this set from the Fillmore East features both David Grisman and David Nelson on mandolin for much of the set, including a very unusual 'Big Railroad Blues' and an acoustic 'Truckin'. Jerry is in particular fine voice throughout, especially on 'To Lay Me Down'. If you are a fan of acoustic Dead this is a set to savor .. I hope you enjoy.. This week's Deadpod takes us back to the Fall tour of 1979 - this time at San Diego for the Saturday night show that took place on November 24. This first set opens with a rare and refreshing 'China Cat>I Know You Rider'. Love hearing this as an opener and I think it sets a nice atmosphere for the show. Cowboy songs come next then a really nice 'Peggy-O' and 'Cassidy' which are both highlights of this set. A youthful sounding Brent gives us a nice 'Easy To Love You' which goes into a longer 'Althea'. They close things with 'Passenger'. Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 11/24/1979 - Saturday One China Cat Sunflower [6:08] > I Know You Rider [8:22] Mama Tried [2:39] > Mexicali Blues [4:28] Peggy-O [6:58] Cassidy [4:51] Easy To Love You [3:27] > Althea [7:59] Passenger [5:04] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112224.mp3 Be sure and pick up the Deadpod early on Thanksgiving for our annual Thanksgiving special...
Here's a fun second set from November 1985 for this week's Deadpod. 'Touch of Grey' into 'Samson' starts things off with some nice Jerry solos in Samson... The 'High Time' that follows makes up for the flubbed ending on Samson with some excellent Jerry vocals. 'Let It Grow' is probably the highlight of the pre-drums segment however, with some excellent improvisational jamming. That spirit is carried through on the Drums and Space. 'Gimme Some Lovin' coming out of space is fun and leads into a sweet 'Stella Blue'. The remainder features some sharp rockin' and concludes with a fun 'In the Midnight Hour' encore. Grateful Dead Community War Memorial Auditorium Rochester, NY 11/7/1985 - Thursday Two Touch Of Grey > Samson And Delilah High Time Let It Grow > Drums > Space > Gimme Some Lovin' > Stella Blue > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away Encore In The Midnight Hour You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111524.mp3 I hope you enjoy the set.. and thanks for your kind support!
This week we have one of the finest shows from the Fall tour of 1985. This comes to us from Rochester New York on November 7, 1985. The opening 'Dancing In the Street' is strong and cohesive - we can tell we are in for a special night. The 'Dire Wolf' presents Jerry in fine voice. While Bobby is a bit cheesy on 'CC Rider' the 'Loser' that follows is excellent. The country 'Mama Tried'>'Mexicalli Blues' is a great lead in to a rockin' 'Cumberland Blues'. While 'Beat it On Down the Line' is also tight and well-played, the set closing 'Deal' is a tad fast, but still always a nice set closer.. With the passing of Phil Lesh I decided to bring you a complete Phil & Friends show from the last time I was lucky enough to see him - March 12, 2023 in Chicago. I really enjoyed the show and hope you dig it. Words can't express what the man meant to the Dead or the scene. We were lucky to have been able to be in his presence from time to time. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, NC on October 10, 1989. A good example, I think, of why this was a high water mark in the band's performance history, this second set showcases their ability to improvise both in spots intended and unintended. The latter I think, is shown in the opening 'Blow Away', which despite some forgotten lyrics and miscues turns into a fine opening number. The jamming in the 'Help>Slip>Frank', especially out of Franklins' and into a fine drums, is an example of some more expected, but nevertheless, successful creativity. Lastly I have to point out how good 'Not Fade Away is here.. far from being mailed in... Grateful Dead Charlotte Coliseum Charlotte, NC 10/22/1989 - Sunday Two Blow Away [10:00] Samson And Delilah [6:20] Help On The Way [3:44] > Slipknot! Howdy! I figured it was about time to get back in the saddle and get another Deadpod out to my wonderful audience.. First off thanks for your kind get well wishes! They all have meant so much..forgive me for not answering each of them, but I'm having some serious trouble typing with alot of numbness in my right hand since my operation.. This week I thought it appropriate to listen to a fine show from the great state of North Carolina, I could only wish that I could help the folks there who have been ravaged by the terrible storms.. This is a well played show from the fall of '89.. a nice Foolish Heart starts things, and frankly I enjoyed every song in this first set. The highlight might be 'Bird Song' where Jerry uses a number of ineresting MIDI effects... The Johnny B Goode encore is also a nice touch.. Grateful Dead Charlotte Coliseum Charlotte, NC 10/22/1989 - Sunday One Foolish Heart [8:03] New Minglewood Blues [7:28] Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [5:56] Queen Jane Approximately [6:00] Ramble On Rose [6:47] Beat It On Down The Line [3:13] Bird Song [14:12] Johnny B. Goode [3:55] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101824.mp3 Again thank you for your patience and your kindness..
This week the Deadpod travels to January of 1980 for an unusual benefit show that the Dead appeared at for Cambodian refugees in Oakland, along with Jefferson Starship, the Beach Boys and Carlos Santana and John Cippolina. This is a tight and well played set throughout. The opening 'Jack Straw' into 'Franklin's Tower' is crisp and edgy. 'Minglewood' is a standout as well. I really enjoy all of these, but the 'Playin' is probably the highlight, although the Santana solo in 'Not Fade Away' is a treat as well; its interesting to hear these three great guitarists playing together.. Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 1/13/1980 - Sunday One Jack Straw [5:42] > Franklin's Tower [11:44] New Minglewood Blues [6:56] Tennessee Jed [8:21] > Looks Like Rain [7:12] > Don't Ease Me In [7:16] Playing In The Band [10:41] > Drums [7:15] > Not Fade Away (1) [14:27] > Sugar Magnolia (1) [7:30] Encore U.S. Blues [#4:18] Comments Cambodian Refugee Benefit. (1) with Carlos Santana and John Cippolina. It is with some sadness that I have to announce that this will be the last Deadpod for some time... I'm scheduled for open heart surgery next week and I'm not sure when I'll be able to be back here sharing these great songs with you. Don't give up on me as I don't plan to give up.. I'll be back as soon as I am able but in the meantime I'd encourage you to listen to some of the old Deadpods - the entire run is still available.. Keep your light on and thanks my friends for all of your support and for listening..
A fine second set awaits you on this week's Deadpod as we explore the second set from the band's performance at the Cumberland Coutny civic Center in Portland Maine on September 17, 1982. This is a matrix recording - but the first two songs are a mix of several audience sources as the soundboard for those doesn't seem to exist.. 'Touch of Grey' and 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' are played uptempo and crisply..Their followed by a beautiful rendition of 'High Time'; Jerry's emotive vocals just hint at how expressive this set will be. 'Estimated' follows, then a delicate 'Eyes of the World'. Following drums and space Weir teases a Spanish Jam but they eventual let Phil take the helm and lead them into the powerful 'Other One' intro.. the crowd loves it and when they finish and go into 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' there is a fair amount of sing along.. The highlight of the set in my opinion is the tremendous version of 'Morning Dew' that follows.. Jerry is at his most expressive here.. words won't do it justice. A fine 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set and a 'US Blues' encore caps the evening... Grateful Dead Cumberland County Civic Center Portland, ME 9/17/1982 - Friday Two Touch Of Grey [6:33] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:46] ; High Time [7:16] ; Estimated Prophet [12:27] > Eyes Of The World [8:53] > Drums > Space [3:58] > The Other One [10:56] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:37] > Morning Dew [8:52] > Sugar Magnolia [8:43] Encore U.S. Blues [4:58] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091324.mp3 May the music lift you up .. thanks for your kind support.
Hey Now! This week the Deadpod takes us to Portland Maine, for a show that took place at the Cumberland County Civic Center on September 17, 1982. This 12 song first set is a concise reading of many of their standards. Brent and Phil are upfront in the mix and overall I find these quite enjoyable. There is a false start in 'Me & My Uncle' which is quite unusual, and we have 'Dupree's' 2 weeks in a row- I'm sure that's a Deadpod record ;) Grateful Dead Cumberland County Civic Center Portland, ME 9/17/1982 - Friday One Bertha [6:25] > The Promised Land [4:02] Candyman [6:31] > C C Rider [8:16] Althea [7:47] Me And My Uncle [3:15] > Big River [5:36] Dupree's Diamond Blues [5:48] It's All Over Now [7:04] West L.A. Holy Smokes! It's Labor Day weekend! Hopefully this second set from the second Field Trip at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds can help you get in the mood for some fun and frolic as we celebrate the passing of another summer... This one starts with the debut of 'Keep Your Day Job' -- and not in the encore slot! Another debut - 'West LA Fadeaway' is also on the menu here. The pre-drums 'Playin In the Band' lifts things up while the post drums 'Wheel'>'Other One' is probably the highlight of this set.. Jerry pulls out a very unusual 'Dupree's Diamond Blues' as the encore here which I'm sure delighted the faithful.. Grateful Dead Oregon Country Fairgrounds Veneta, OR 8/28/1982 - Saturday Two Keep Your Day Job [5:06]* > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [6:42] West L.A. This week's Deadpod features the second 'Field Trip' at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds in Veneta Oregon on August 28,1982. While not as famous, or as monumental, as the first Field Trip immortalized in the 'Sunshine Daydream' movie, this show has plenty of stellar moments and is certainly worthy of a listen. While the first set is not as packed with jaw-dropping moments as parts of set 2, there are plenty of interesting moments here. Brent and Jerry are both in fine form throughout. You can certainly tell when the boys get it all together here at the end of the set, with a wonderful 'China>Rider'.Just as in the first field trip, this combo gets everyone shakin' their bones and the band seems to hit the X factor here. Grateful Dead Oregon Country Fairgrounds Veneta, OR 8/28/1982 - Saturday One Bertha > New Minglewood Blues Tennessee Jed Me And My Uncle > Big River Althea It's All Over Now China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod082324.mp3 be well and look out for each other.... my thanks for your kind support..
This week's second set from the August 6, 1971 at the Hollywood Paladium is a classic. It opens with 'St. Stephan' - they'd only play this one five more times before 1976.. a nice 'Truckin' goes into drums, then they roar into 'The Other One' and segue flawlessly into 'Me & My Uncle' - the first time they tried this and it worked perfectly.. they then go back into the 'Other One' but if you listen you can hear a WRS prelude tease before they do... Things mellow a bit with 'Deal' but the rest of the set is just as intense with 'Sugar Magnolia' then a great 'Morning Dew' and Pigpen lets it loose with a 23 minute plus 'Lovelight'.. Grateful Dead Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA 8/6/1971 - Friday Two Saint Stephen [6:16] Truckin' [6:50] > Drums [3:56] > The Other One [7:29] > Me And My Uncle [3:08] > The Other One [5:41] Deal [5:05] Sugar Magnolia [6:18] Morning Dew [10:42] Turn On Your Love Light [23:38] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081624.mp3 Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod!
As we come to the end of the Days Between, and reflect on what Jerry gave us I thought it appropriate to present a classic show from when the band was young and ferocious. This comes to us from August 6, 1971 at the Hollywood Palladium. Long considered a classic, I'm sure you'll agree if you haven't yet been fortunate enough to hear this performance. This first set contains no clunkers.. I think each of these songs is a top-notch rendition, but for sure I have to point out 'Mr. Charlie' and 'Cumberland Blues'.. but the highlight here is clearly the great version of 'Hard to Handle'.. Pigpen is at his finest ... Grateful Dead Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA 8/6/1971 - Friday One Bertha [5:52] Playing In The Band [4:34] Loser [6:29] Mr. Charlie [3:27] El Paso [7:07] Cumberland Blues [5:03] Brokedown Palace [4:57] Me And Bobby McGee [5:47] Hard To Handle [7:16] Casey Jones [4:55] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080924.mp3 Our love is real, not fade away....
This week we conclude the band's performance on July 26, 1972 at the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon. Clearly the 'Dark Star' we open with is the highlight of this set, if not the show. It traverses the heavens for over half and hour and features some excellent improvisational displays (see the Dark Star map below). It leads into a lovely and soulful 'Comes A Time'. 'Sugar Mag' follows to get things rockin' again, and that leads into a 'Brown Eyed Women' which is unfortunately cut on the tape. Another Jerry ballad - 'Stella Blue' follows and then the band revs it up for a fine 'Not Fade Away>Going Down the Road>Not Fade Away' conclusion to this epic set. 'One More Saturday Night' is the encore, although this one was played on Wednesday :) Grateful Dead Paramount Theatre Portland, OR 7/26/1972 - Wednesday Two (con't): Dark Star [31:13] (5) > Comes A Time [7:03] Sugar Magnolia [7:56] Brown Eyed Women [3#:38] Beat It On Down The Line [3:06] Stella Blue [8:06] Not Fade Away [5:15] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:20] > Not Fade Away [3:22] Encore One More Saturday Night [5:32] (5) Dark Star Map: Dark Star theme/Jam [9:22] > theme/Verse one [1:49] > Spacy Jam [1:08] > Bass and Drums [1:05] > Bass, Drums and Piano [1:10] > All but Jerry Jam [0:30] > Jam [3:45] > Spacier [1:15] > Space [4:05] > tiger [1:00] > Uptempo Spacy Jam [2:50] > theme/Verse 2 [2:53] > Comes a time. This week we continue with a show from 52 years ago today - 7/26/72. We will pick up with the ending of set 1 then work into the second set.. We start with a sweet 'Playin' In the Band' - Donna is introduced before hand and its a fine start to this week's Deadpod. They close set one with ' Casey Jones'. Set 2 begins with a strong 'Promised Land' then goes into 'He's Gone' which had debuted only a few months before. 'Uncle' follows then 'You Win Again' which would only be played 2 more times before it was retired in September. A high energy 'Greatest Story' follows and we close this edition of the Deadpod with some fine Garcia work on 'Ramble on Rose'.. Grateful Dead Paramount Theater Portland, OR 7/26/1972 - Wednesday One (continued) Playing In The Band [12:27] Casey Jones [4:48] Two The Promised Land [2:58] He's Gone [8:46] Me And My Uncle [3:05] You Win Again [4:02] Greatest Story Ever Told [4:57] Ramble On Rose [6:09] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod072624.mp3 Stay tuned for the climax of this show on next week's Deadpod! thank you for your kind support!
This week's Deadpod features a massive show from the summer of 1972. This show is so big that I'm splitting it into three Deadpods - this week we will hear most of set 1.. This features some fine renditions of some of their standards - highlights include a great Sugaree, a mid--set China>Rider and a raucous Tennesee Jed. This one goes out to Steve - happy Birthday! Grateful Dead Paramount Theater Portland, OR 7/26/1972 - Wednesday One Cold Rain And Snow [527] Black Throated Wind [5:59] Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [6:59] Mexicali Blues [3:29] Sugaree [7:14] (1) El Paso [4:20] China Cat Sunflower [6:44] > I Know You Rider [4:51] (2) Jack Straw [4:54] Tennessee Jed [7:35] (1) Lesh: Who What When Who When Where Who What Oh sorry. This week we have the second set from the band's performance at Alpine Valley on July 7, 1984. This is a strong set throughout, with the band really coming together I think to deliver some great versions of these songs. 'Samson and Delilah' opens with the drummers providing the familiar beat.. Jerry follows with 'Cold Rain and Snow' - always appropriate for a July show. They then seg into 'Playin' In the Band', while not overly long, this version does feature some interesting Brent effects and seqs interestingly into 'China Doll'. Jerry hits this one just right and then they move into a very good Drums segment. They come out of drums surprisingly into 'Terrapin Station' as you think you hear some 'Other One' notes being played.. but the Terrapin is told well and goes into Bobby doing 'Throwing Stones' with a few different lyrics. 'Not Fade Away' follows, but is short, as Phil insists they move into 'Lovelight'! the first since NYE 82.. Bobby does a fine version here, and they close with a return to 'Not Fade Away'. A 'Brokedown Palace' encore prepares the faithful for that long trek up the hill... Grateful Dead 1984-07-07 Saturday Alpine Valley Music Theatre - East Troy, WI Two Samson And Delilah Cold Rain And Snow Playing In The Band > China Doll > Space > Drums > Space > Terrapin Station > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away > Turn On Your Love Light > Not Fade Away Encore Brokedown Palace You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071224.mp3 Enjoy and be kind :)
This week we travel to one of the beloved summer venues - Alpine Valley - for a show that took place back on July 7, 1984, a Saturday night. The first set starts with 'Hell In A Bucket', then moves into a fine 'Dire Wolf' Jerry really belts it out here, and its fun to listen to. 'New New Minglewood Blues' follows with Bobby telling us its 'T for Alpine Valley' .. 'Dupree's Diamond Blues follows - a bit slower, but still one that brings a smile. 'My Brother Esau' shares Bobby's anti-war message. 'Brown Eyed Women' may be the highlight of the set with some strong work by Jerry here. 'Looks like Rain' goes into 'Might as Well' to close the set, and Jerry sounds like his voice needs a break.. Grateful Dead 1984-07-07 Saturday Alpine Valley Music Theatre - East Troy, WI Set 1: Hell In A Bucket Dire Wolf New New Minglewood Blues Dupree's Diamond Blues My Brother Esau Brown-Eyed Women Looks Like Rain > Might As Well You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070524.mp3 Have a safe and fun holiday weekend! thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!
This week's conclusion of the band's performance down at Eugene on June 24,1990 displays several sides of the band which highlight their agility and craft at putting together a setlist. From the opening sequence which I'd describe as light and bouncy - 'Foolish Heart' into 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' they move into 'Standing on the Moon' and 'Box of Rain'. They follow with a typically animated Bob Weir on 'Estimated' into 'He's Gone' - all before Drums and Space. He's Gone doesn't end with the mellow a cappella fade out they often employed, instead they move into drums and space and build into a great post-drums 'Other One'>Wharf Rat>Sugar Magnolia conclusion to a great show. The 'Brokedown Palace' encore caps off a fine Sunday show... Grateful Dead Autzen Stadium - University of Oregon Eugene, OR 6/24/1990 - Sunday Two Foolish Heart > Man Smart, Woman Smarter > Standing On The Moon ; Box Of Rain ; Estimated Prophet > He's Gone > Drums > Space > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia Encore Brokedown Palace You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062824.mp3 Have a safe and FUN July 4th!! and thanks for your kind support.
It sure feels like summertime here, and one of my favorite summer time tours was back in 1990.. this week we go back to Eugene for a fine show that took place on June 24, 1990 at Autzen Stadium at the University of Oregon. The first set starts with a fine Help>Slip>Frank - Jerry has some great leads here.. Masterpiece follows and Bob does the vocals just right. Loose Lucy made its reappearance in the Spring of 90, and Jerry breaks it out here for the sixth time since 1974. Brent shines 'Just A Little Light'.. a personal favorite of mine. Picasso Moon and Candyman follow and the set closes with an excellent 'Let It Grow'... Here is the second set from the band's performance at the Boston Music Hall on June 10, 1976. Samson always seemed like a favorite to break out in Boston, and revs things up for a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank' here. Nice harmonies here, and the Slipknot features some upfront work by Keith. Bobby does a fine 'Let It Grow', then we have a mid-set 'Friend of the Devil' - a bit more spacey than usual, but that leads into the highlight of the set, a 'Playin' In The Band' which leads into an excellent 'Space jam'. That eventually goes into 'Dancin' In The Streets' and the band closes out the set with a rocking 'U.S. Blues'. Grateful Dead Boston Music Hall Boston, MA 6/10/1976 - Thursday Two Samson & Delilah Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower Let It Grow Friend Of The Devil Playing In The Band > Dancin' In The Streets > U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061424.mp3 This space is geting Hot!
A fine show from the comeback year of 1976 graces this week's Deadpod. This is from June 10, 1976 at the Boston Music Hall in Boston. The thirteen song first set should provide plenty of chances to reflect on how fortunate we hare to have this music after all these years.. In general this set, as most from this time period, shows the band concentrating on tight arrangements with powerful singing, perhaps at the expense of more free-flowing jamming. Some of the highlights here include a great 'Music Never Stopped', a short but sweet 'Sugaree', and of course a lovely 'Mission In the Rain', a song that did not last long in the Dead's rotation, but of course did more so in Jerry's solo work. I'd be remiss to not point out the lovely harmony on 'Looks Like Rain' with Bobby and Donna, as well as Keith's up front piano throughout. The closing 'Might As Well' is notable for Phil's unique bass.. Grateful Dead Boston Music Hall Boston, MA 6/10/1976 - Thursday One The Promised Land Sugaree Cassidy They Love Each Other The Music Never Stopped Brown-Eyed Women Lazy Lightning > Supplication Row Jimmy Big River Mission In The Rain Looks Like Rain Might As Well You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod060724.mp3 I hope you enjoy the music, and thank you for your kind support!
This week the Deadpod returns to Milwaukee for the second set of the band's performance from May 30, 1980. A fine Scarlet>Fire opens this set, including some excellent jamming in the transition (by the way check out this week's Deadcast for an excellent discussion of 'Scarlet Begonias' here: https://www.dead.net/deadcast) A seemingly short 'Playing In the Band' follows, but there is some excellent improvisation going on in the transition to a sweet drum segment that follows. 'Not Fade Away' flows into the 'Black Peter' and then into an excellent 'Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad'. Bobby ends the set with a nice 'Good Lovin' but the boys really get worked up on the 'Alabama Getaway' encore.. not to be missed.. Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday Two Scarlet Begonias [9:18] > Fire On The Mountain [10:17] Playing In The Band [13:49] > Drums [7:39] > Space [2:20] > Not Fade Away [5:32] > Black Peter [8:50] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:21] > Good Lovin' [7:01] Encore Alabama Getaway [4:25] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053124.mp3 Have a fabulous week! thanks for picking us up!
I think we have a good one to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend - this comes to us from May 30, 1980 at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The first set starts with a fine 'Jack Straw' - the first minute forty is supplied by an audience tape but hold on because the rest is a fine soundboard. The transition jams from Jack Straw to Franklin's Tower are off the chart.. Jerry is in fine form here.. as evidenced by the hot Uncle and Big River that follow... They include a 'Passenger' here, without Donna of course, but still smokin'... then Brent does an early 'Easy to Love You'. They bring down the house with a set closing 'Music Never Stopped'. Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday One Jack Straw [5:29] > Franklin's Tower [11:15] Me And My Uncle [3:06] > Big River [6:11] Friend Of The Devil [8:36] Passenger [5:10] Easy To Love You [3:29] Althea [8:31] The Music Never Stopped [7:45] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052424.mp3 I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day.. take a moment to pause and remember what the holiday is for..
This week on the Deadpod we continue with the second set from the band's performance at the Greet Theater in Berkeley California on May 21, 1982. The set kicks off with a tight 'Playing In the Band' highlighted by contributions from Brent that are just exactly perfect. An uptempo 'Uncle John's Band' follows, the jam leading out into drums has a nice interplay between Phil and Jerry that is quite cool. Drums has some intense moments.. they go into a nice ensemble version of 'The Wheel'. A Playin reprise follows, leading into a soulful 'Black Peter'. 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set, and they return with Jerry singing a great version of 'Don't Ease' as a uptempo encore. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/21/1982 - Friday Two Playing In The Band > Uncle John's Band > Drums > Space > The Wheel > Playing In The Band > Black Peter > Sugar Magnolia Encore Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051724.mp3 I hope this brings you a little joy... my thanks.. This week we go to the wonderful Greek Theater in Berkeley California for the band's performance on May 21, 1982. I think this was one of the better years in terms of the band's history and this is not only a fine recording but a well-played set that I'm sure you'll enjoy. The first set starts with a 'Bertha>Greatest Story' combo, one that was fairly new at the time. Jerry slows it down with a 'Friend of the Devil' but the 'Uncle'>'Big River' that follows benefits greatly from his nimble guitar. A nice 'Bird Song' flows into Bobby's 'CC Rider', then we have an excellent 'Althea', not only is Jerry in fine voice, but his delivery is just exactly perfect. Bob delivers a nice 'Looks like Rain' and they close with a boppin' 'Might as Well'. Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/21/1982 - Friday One Bertha [6:35] > Greatest Story Ever Told [3:50] Friend Of The Devil [8:44] Me And My Uncle [2:55] > Big River [5:09] Bird Song [10:45] > C C Rider [7:27] Althea [7:47] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Might As Well [4:01] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051024.mp3 Thank you friends for listening and for your kind support.
This week's Deadpod takes us back to Irvine California for the second set of the show from April 23, 1988. This second set is well-executed, tight yet containing several delightful spacey interludes. The opening 'Playin In the Band', while short, is quite interesting and gives way to an excellent 'Crazy Fingers'. That leads into 'Uncle John's Band', afterwards the band goes into a rather extended Drums and Space, whcih are quite high powered and interesting. Post-Drums highlights include a powerful 'Going Down the Road' and an excellent 'Dear Mr. Fantasy> Hey Jude reprise'. Jerry's ballad slot gives us a sweet 'Stella Blue' and they close the set with a nice 'Lovelight'. A 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' encore ends the festivities. Grateful Dead Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre Irvine , CA 4/23/1988 - Saturday Two Playing In The Band [7:38] > Crazy Fingers [8:04] > Uncle John's Band [8:39] > Drums [10:05] > Space [13:09] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:02] > I Need A Miracle [3:32] > Dear Mr. Fantasy [5:14] > Hey Jude Reprise [1:27] > Stella Blue [8:07] > Turn On Your Love Light [5:32] Encore Knockin' On Heaven's Door You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050324.mp3 Sorry - no 'The Race is On' this year, but nevertheless I hope you have a wonderful Derby weekend .. This week's Deadpod takes us to sunny California where we will get to hear a nice show from the spring of 1988. This one comes from April 23 at Irvine Meadows. The boys open with a fine 'Hell In a Bucket' with Weir in full voice. 'Cold Rain and Snow' follows, then we get the first of several fun little interlude before a great version of 'Hey Pockey Way' with Brent doing a fine version. Since they are in Cali, Jerry breaks out a 'West L.A. Fadeaway'. 'Me & My Uncle>Big River' follows, then an excellent 'To Lay Me Down'. 'Cassidy' into 'Don't Ease' closes set 1. This week we will hear the second set of the band's performance on April 4, 1993 at the Nassau Coliseum. A short but tight 'Eyes of the World' opens up the second set, going into 'Samson and Delilah'. One of the highlights of this set follows, a fine version of Phil singing 'Broken Arrow'. Phil does an excellent job with this Robbie Robertson tune here. A nice 'Estimated Prophet leads into a fine Drums and Space, helped by the guest appearance of Boba Olatunji. A nice but short 'Other One' follows out of Space, leading into a rare 'Attics of My Life' before the boys go into the familiar 'Throwing Stones>Not Fade Away' to end the set. Jerry does a most excellent version of 'Liberty' as the encore to finish what was quite a good show. Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 4/4/1993 - Sunday Two Eyes Of The World > Samson And Delilah Broken Arrow Estimated Prophet > Drums (1) > Space (1) > The Other One > Attics Of My Life > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away Encore Liberty Comments (1) with Boba Olatunji You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041924.mp3 Thank you so much for your kind support.
This week on the Deadpod we have a very nice latter day show from Spring 1993. This comes to us from the Nassau Coliseum on April 4, 1993, and it is a Sunday night show. Some of the highlights of the first set include a very nice Sugaree (Jerry's voice is a bit frail at times but he carries it off the entire show). 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' is always welcome in my book. Jerry does an excellent version of 'So Many Roads' and the 'Bird Song' after 'Eternity' is a sweet way to wind up the first set. Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 4/4/1993 - Sunday One In The Midnight Hour Sugaree > Walkin' Blues Dire Wolf When I Paint My Masterpiece So Many Roads Eternity > Bird Song You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041224.mp3 "So many roads, I tell you New York to San Francisco So many roads I know All I want is one to take me home"
We roll into April, and the prelude to the big Solar Eclipse, we get to hear a wonderful second set from the Grateful Dead's performance on Sunday, March 30, 1980 in Passaic New Jersey. While the setlist might look anything but innovative, the playing on these great classic tunes is anything but pedestrian. The entire pre-drums is full of some wonderful ensemble moments punctuated with some great Garcia solos. In particular, I'm fond of this 'Fire on the Mountain' and 'Eyes of the World' bu Weir's vocals on 'Estimated' are something else as well. Post-drums, the 'Black Peter' is quite soulful and the encore, 'U.S. Blues' was highlighted by an appearance on stage of John Belushi sticking a cartwheel on stage and grabbing a mic for a 'wave that flag' with the band... fun! Grateful Dead Capitol Theatre Passaic, NJ 3/30/1980 - Sunday Two Scarlet Begonias [8:28] > Fire On The Mountain [9:00] Estimated Prophet [11:04] > Eyes Of The World [10:50] > Space [4:24] > Drums [6:#00] > Black Peter [10:34] > Sugar Magnolia [7:54] Encore U.S. Blues [5:38] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod040524.mp3 Of course, if you're looking up here in the Midwest Monday afternoon, be sure and wear those special shades ;)
This week's Deadpod features the second show the band played in 1980, this from the Capitol Theater in Passaic New Jersey on March 30, 1980. Brent is fairly new to the band, and finding his way on some of these tunes.. they open with a relatively new 'Alabama Getaway' which goes into 'Promised Land' for a rockin' start to the evening. 'Cassidy' which follows 'Peggy-O' is a bit rushed, but the 'Loser' that follows is quite good. Brent debuts his 'Far From Me' which still needs some work but shows promise. Another highlight is the 'New Minglewood Blues' where Brent's Hammond B3 sounds especially good. The rest of the set is quite good as well - the 'Althea' is well done and Bobby adds alot of energy to the 'Sailor>Saint' combo to close the set. Grateful Dead Capitol Theatre Passaic, NJ 3/30/1980 - Sunday One Alabama Getaway [5:02] > The Promised Land [4:15] Peggy-O [6:54] Cassidy [4:45] Loser [6:36] > El Paso [4:26] Far From Me [4:01] Tennessee Jed [4:40] New Minglewood Blues [6:33] Althea [7:43] Lost Sailor [6:03] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:56#] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032924.mp3 Hope that you have a happy Easter weekend! my thanks to Steve for his suggestion of this show.
This week's Deadpod features set 2 from the St. Patrick's Day show on March 17, 1988 at the Henry Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland CA. I think you'll find this is a fine, high energy set, with some wonderful highlights, which include a roaring 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' out of Space, and a particularly well done 'Dear Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude' set closer. The 'Black Muddy River' encore is very soulful as well. Enjoy Grateful Dead Henry J. In honor of the upcoming St. Patrick's Day I decided to bring you a St. Patrick's day Dead concert - this one is from March 17, 1988 at Oakland California. The first set, which we will hear this week, features a nice opening 'Hell In A Bucket' into a fine 'Sugaree'. Another highlight is the first 'Memphis Blues' without Bob Dylan. 'Row Jimmy' and a nice 'Let It Grow' finishes the first set. I'll bring you the second set next week.. Grateful Dead Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, CA 3/17/1988 - Thursday One Hell In A Bucket [5:57] > Sugaree [9:42] New Minglewood Blues [1] [7:12] Ramble On Rose [6:33] Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again [8:23] Row Jimmy [8:04] Let It Grow [10:51] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031524.mp3 Have a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day!
Here is the second set from the band's performance on March 3, 1981 at the beautiful Music Hall in Cleveland Ohio. They open with 'China Cat', while Garcia flubs the first verse, he makes up for it with a fine transition into Rider. A rockin 'Samson and Delilah' follows and then a long 'He's Gone'. The Drums section is particularly potent here, leading not into a long Space but instead into a 'Sailor>Saint' combo. The 'Black Peter' that follows is very soulful indeed. They close the set with 'Good Lovin' then return for a 'Casey Jones' encore. Grateful Dead Cleveland Music Hall Cleveland, OH 3/3/1981 - Tuesday Two China Cat Sunflower [10:56] > I Know You Rider [5:48] > Samson And Delilah [7:35] He's Gone [16:33] > Drums [12:41] > Lost Sailor [6:42] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:08] > Black Peter [10:31] > Good Lovin' [8:13] Encore Casey Jones [5:19] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030824.mp3 "See here how everything lead up to this day And it's just like any other day that's ever been Sun going up and then the sun going down"
I think this week's Deadpod brings March in both as a lion and a lamb = this first set from Cleveland on March 3, 1981 has some great rockin' tunes and some sweet ballads to please the most discerning Deadhead. Don't be put off by the start of 'Feel Like a Stranger' - the audience patch only lasts for a short bit - the rest of this tape is a fine sounding soundboard in which you can hear the interplay between the members most clearly. A sweet 'Peggy O' follows then a fine 'Me & My Uncle' into 'Big River' highlighted by some nice Garcia work. That continues in the 'Bird Song' that follows.. and leads into 'Looks Like Rain' -this one builds to a nice crescendo. The rockin' returns with a great 'Big Railroad Blues' - nice work here by Brent. A long 'Little Red Rooster' follows.. Brent adds some nice B3 work here. The set closing 'Deal' ramps things back up properly.. Grateful Dead Cleveland Music Hall Cleveland, OH 3/3/1981 - Tuesday One Feel Like A Stranger [8:33] Peggy-O [7:49] Me And My Uncle [3:01] > Big River [5:16] Bird Song [11:08] > Looks Like Rain [7:47] Big Railroad Blues [4:50] Little Red Rooster [10:06] > Deal [7:22] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030124.mp3 All the best my friends....
A wonderful set of classic Grateful Dead awaits your listening pleasure on this week's Deadpod as we visit the second set from their performance on February 15, 1973 in Madison Wisconsin. The opening 'Here Comes Sunshine' foretells a special night as the band warms up with some fine renditions of several favorites leading into the real treat - a special 'Dark Star'. This version features some extra-special Phil Lesh contributions which foretell a lovely 'Eyes of the World'. The band paints a beautiful portrait here which then turns into a sweet soulful 'China Doll'. Things ramp up from there with versions of 'Promised Land' and 'Sugaree' before a set closing 'Sugar Magnolia. They return for double encore, of which we only have on this tape the fine 'Uncle John's Band'. This week the Deadpod goes back 51 years to February 15, 1973 when the Grateful Dead played a massive show in Madison Wisconsin. this first set clocks in at about 100 minute... it starts with a song they debuted about a week earlier 'Loose Lucy'. They are still warming up when they then 'Beat It On Down The Line'. Several favorites follow, but things really get rolling with a fine, up tempo 'Row Jimmy'. The highlights of the set follow, with a wonderful 'China Cat >I Know You Rider' and a jamming 'Playing In The Band'. Bobby really steps it up in the last third of this first set.. An unusual second set setlist and an unusual guest highlight this week's Deadpod from February 12, 1989 in Los Angeles. Following an opening 'Iko, Iko', Bob breaks out 'Monkey and the Engineer' for the final time, although it sounds a bit different than in the past due to Bob's different timing of the verses. 'Alabama Getaway' follows, another unusual second set choice, then again, 'Dire Wolf', if with a bit of a ragged chorus.A nice version of 'Cassidy' follows, then 'Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again' - with Dylan adding some vocals when Bobby 'forgets' in the middle of the song.. An interesting 'Other One' follows post-drums, with a Kodo drummer adding some intensity, but it is a bit shorter than usual.. 'Stella Blue' follows and flows into a set closing 'Foolish Heart'. A nice double encore follows, with Dylan taking the vocals for 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door'.. This week's Deadpod takes us to L.A., where the Dead are joined by some special guests for a unique performance back on February 12, 1989. This first set has a nice 'Cold Rain and Snow' opener, followed shortly by 'Hell In A Bucket'. 'Row Jimmy' follows with a nice dreamy tempo. An unusually placed 'Beat It On Down the Line' goes nicely into 'The Promised Land'. After a 'West L.A. Fadeaway', Spence Davis joins the band for a spirited 'How Long Blues' and a nice set-closing 'Gimme Some Lovin'.. This week's Deadpod features a historic performance - it occurred on the night the band was 'busted down in New Orleans' - January 30, 1970 at The Warehouse in New Orleans, Louisiana. Also historic as it was the last show that Tom Constantin played in the Dead.. but aside from that this is a fine show and I think you'll enjoy hearing this very good tape.. The tape is missing part of the opening Casey Jones, nevertheless good vibes here and on the following 'Me & My Uncle'.. 'Black Peter' is wonderful.. I also think the 'High Time in this set is absolutely perfect. 'Cumberland Blues' is hot.. hotter than you think that song should be ;) and is there a better song to pull out here than 'Easy Wind'? The 'Cryptical Envelopment>Other One>Cryptical' is hard driving Dead! They do a sweet transition into 'Cosmic Charlie' - sadly this one is cut as well... . Here is the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena on January 25, 1993. They start with a nice uptempo 'China Cat Sunflower->I Know Your Rider', which gets things off to a very good start. Sadly that tempo is halted with the following 'Way To Go Home'. They then go into another new tune at the time 'Corrina' which however has the virtue of providing an interesting transition into a 'Playin' In the Band' reprise (they had played Playin' the night before). Drums and Space are quite good, as was standard in latter day Dead, and lead quite interestingly into a powerful 'All Along the Watchtower'. Jerry brings out August West the 'Wharf Rat' and they then finish the set with a jazzy 'Around and Around'. Phil does an excellent 'Box of Rain' encore. Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 1/25/1993 - Monday Two China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Way To Go Home > Corrina > Playing In The Band Reprise > Uncle John's Band > Drums > Space > All Along The Watchtower > Wharf Rat >Around And Around Encore Box Of Rain You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011924.mp3 Thanks for listening and for your kind support!
This week's Deadpod features a nice later day show from January 25, 1993 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. This one opens with a fine 'Shakedown Street' - always a good omen, and I think the rest of the set is quite nicely played as well. 'The Same Thing' makes an appearance, as does a relatively rare 'Loose Lucy'. One of the highlights has to be a wonderful version of 'Maggie's Farm' - I always enjoyed the band's harmonies on this one. They close this rather short first set (common for this time period) with a nice 'Music Never Stopped'. Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 1/25/1993 - Monday One Shakedown Street The Same Thing Althea Mama Tried > Maggie's Farm Loose Lucy The Music Never Stopped You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011224.mp3 I hope this finds you and yours safe from the weather, healthy and happy! thanks as always for your kind support of the Deadpod.
This week's Deadpod returns for the second set of the band's performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena on December 27th, 1989. Clarence Clemmons makes a surprise appearance on the opening Iko, Iko and adds a great touch here as the band gets the crowd wound up for what is a fine second set. A spacey 'Playin' In the Band' follows - with some extraterrestrial exploration before going into a lovely 'Crazy Fingers'. 'Uncle John's Band' caps off the pre-drums set. The post-drums is highlighted by a truly wonderful 'Morning Dew'.. there was an issue with Jerry's sound at the end but that really doesn't detract from what is a great version. The boys then surprise the crowd with a double encore -'Johnny B. Goode' and 'Black Muddy River'.. Grateful Dead 1989-12-27 Oakland Coliseum Arena - Oakland, CA Two Iko Iko [7:43] Playing In The Band [13:11] > Crazy Fingers [8:22] > Uncle John's Band [8:40] > Drums [11:#05] > Space [8:20] > The Wheel [5:01] > I Need A Miracle [3:49] > Morning Dew [11:41] Encore Johnny B. We're going to closeout our Deadpods for 2023, with this beauty from the New Years Eve run of 1989 .. this one is from December 27, 1989 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. This first set has some great rocking going on, as is evident from the opening 'Cold Rain and Snow' and 'Greatest Story Ever Told'. Brent supplies 'Never Trust a Woman' aka 'Good Time Blues'. then we have a fine 'Althea' before a rockin' 'Uncle>Big River'. The crowd gets it's wish as Phil then sings 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues'. A fine 'Bird Song' follows before a tight 'Promised Land' closes set 1. Grateful Dead 1989-12-27 Oakland Coliseum Arena - Oakland, CA Set 1: Cold Rain & Snow Greatest Story Ever Told Never Trust A Woman Althea Me & My Uncle > Big River Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues Bird Song > The Promised Land You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122923.mp3 Have a safe and happy New Year! This week's Deadpod features the conclusion of the band's performance at McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado on December 14, 1990. This is a fine, professional performance... starts out with a relatively new song, 'Victim or the Crime', then flows into an uptempo 'Foolish Heart', then 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter'.. The He's Gone that follows flows nicely into a particularly interesting Drums and Space.. then into a reprise of the opening night's 'Dark Star'. The boys flow into a rousing version of 'I Need a Miracle' - assisted by the crowd.. 'Wharf Rat' follows before the set closing 'Turn On Your Lovelight'.. A beautiful 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' closes the set and the run... Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 12/14/1990 - Friday Two Victim Or The Crime > Foolish Heart > Man Smart, Woman Smarter ; He's Gone > Drums > Space > Dark Star > I Need A Miracle > Wharf Rat > Turn On Your Love Light Encore Knockin' On Heaven's Door You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122223.mp3 Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays..
From what I think is the last strongest year of the Grateful Dead, this week's Deadpod comes to us from Denver Colorado on December 14, 1990. This was the last show of a three show run at the old McNichols Arena there, and is a fine culmination of what was a very strong run (you can go back in the Deadpod archives to hear the previous two shows). There is no Bruce Hornsby this evening, and Vince stands out throughout - most of the time in a good way I think. The opening Shakedown is quite nice - long and bouncy.. 'Picasso Moon' - a song withe some of the perhaps silliest lyrics ever - is better here than earlier in the year. The 'Peggy-O' that follows is quite sweet and I actually think the 'Little Red Rooster' here is one of their better versions of this one. The highlight in this set has to be the fine soulful 'To Lay Me Down' - not played often, but done with great emotion here. The transition into a great version of 'Let It Grow' leaves the audience excited for what is to come in set 2.. Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 12/14/1990 - Friday Tuning Shakedown Street Picasso Moon Peggy-O Little Red Rooster Stagger Lee When I Paint My Masterpiece To Lay Me Down> Let It Grow You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121523.mp3 As we near the end of 2023, thank you for your support which keeps the Deadpod rolling...
This week we conclude our presentation of the band's performance at the Warfield in San Francisco back on September 26,1980. This third set starts with Scarlet>Fire and while it is a worthwhile listen the real fire breaks out on the 'Estimated Prophet' that follows.. some great Garcia/Weir interplay and the entire band is cooking here. The 'Eyes of the World' that follows is a bit fast for my taste, but certainly has some sparkling runs. Drums/Space leads out into a fine 'Not Fade Away' - plenty of Brent adds lots of power here. They lead out quietly into 'Black Peter'... Sugar Mag ends the set and there is a fine 'Brokedown' encore, which Jerry restarts, probably due to his voice being a bit rough by now.. :) A thoroughly enjoyable set, hope you enjoy it as well.. Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 9/26/1980 - Friday Three Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Drums > Space > Not Fade Away > Black Peter > Sugar Magnolia Encore Brokedown Palace You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120823.mp3 Keep the light on...
Because I didn't want to orphan the rest of this show, and because it is a fine recording and a good show, I'm going to bring you the rest of the performance we started last week from the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on September 26,1980. This is a fine electric set, with many classic numbers, if not a huge amount of jamming. The opening 'Feel Like a Stranger' features some interesting Brent additions. All of these songs are well played, if a bit safely - I think this was being recorded for what would become 'Dead Set' although none of these were included. Highlights for me here are the closing Tennesee Jed>Sailor>Saint, although there are no dogs here. Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 9/26/1980 - Friday\ Two Feel Like A Stranger Sugaree Me And My Uncle > Big River Peggy-O New Minglewood Blues Candyman Looks Like Rain Tennessee Jed > Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120123.mp3 Thank you for your support of the Deadpod!
Happy Thanksgiving! As always here on the Deadpod, I'm publishing this holiday edition on Thanksgiving day for you to enjoy sometime during your festivities, if you like. As is also the tradition on the Deadpod, this is an acoustic show, and I've managed to find a really beautiful acoustic set for this year, coming to us from September 26, 1980 at the Warfield in San Francisco. This one starts with the first 'To Lay Me Down' since 10/19/74, and the first 'On the Road Again' since 12/1/66! These versions are really wonderful, including the very first acoustic 'Cassidy' and a soulful 'China Doll' into 'Ripple'. Thank you for your support, your kind words, suggestions and encouragement. May this find you with loads to be thankful for, surrounded by those you love.
This week the Deadpod travels to the East Coast for a show that took place around 2 months after last week's show. This is the early show from the Fillmore East in NYC on January 2, 1970. This is quite a nice tape, don't let the few seconds at the beginning fool you. The 'Mason's Children' opener is a good representation of this somewhat odd song. 'Black Peter' is quite extended, much more than usual for this song. 'Hard to Handle' is explosive as usual. The boys really hit their stride here with the 'Cryptical Envelopment>Drums>Other One'. I quite enjoy the 'Cosmic Charlie' that follows but that's a tune I thought they never played often enough :) I hope you enjoy it.. This week's Deadpod contains part two of the band's performance at the Fillmore in San Francisco on November 7, 1969. Hyper-energetic, this one contains loads of frantic jamming and amazing soaring guitar work by Garcia and Lesh. After a fairly short China>Rider, they go into a deep exploration with 'Dark Star' which goes into an unusual 'Uncle John's Jam', then back out with Lesh leading the charge into 'The Other One'. The highlight, for me, is the wonderful closing number, Pigpen in all his glory on a great 'Lovelight' rap. For this week's Deadpod we go back to 1969 for a show at the Fillmore in San Francisco that took place on November 7, 1969. I'm going to play this music in two parts, although it is unclear whether there were really one set or two.. part one opens with a powerful 'Morning Dew' - Jerry really brings it at the end of this one! Pigpen follows with a classic 'Hard To Handle' - so great to listen to the Pig bring it on this one! 'Casey Jones' follows then a couple of Bobby's ditty's 'Mama Tried' and 'Me & My Uncle' - they all sound great on this early soundboard! There follows some general hilarity with someone in the audience playing the 'Star Spangled Banner' on a flute and several short tunings.. following a nice 'Cold Rain and Snow' we are treated to dual harmonies from Garcia and Pigpen on 'Next Time You See Me'. They slow it down a bit on a soulful 'High Time' before we close this first part with some classic Pigpen on 'Good Lovin'. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta Georgia on October 29, 1985. They come out strong with a fine version of 'Mississippi Half-Step' into 'Franklin's Tower' - lots of energy and interplay here, and the first Franklin's not out of Slipknot since '83. . This then goes into a very good 'Sailor>Saint' .. one of the last five times they would ever play this combo, ever. A lovely 'Crazy Fingers' follows, although Jer gets lost in the lyrics, its a lovely transition into Drums.. 'The Wheel' comes out of Space in a swirl of sound, and Phil is bombing on 'The Other One' that follows.. after 'Wharf Rat' they close the set with 'Johnny B. Goode' which hadn't had this slot since December 81.. Grateful Dead Fox Theatre Atlanta, GA 10/29/1985 - Tuesday Two Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Franklin's Tower > Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance Crazy Fingers > Drums > Space > The Wheel > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Johnny B. This week's Deadpod takes us to the Fabulous Fox theater in Atlana Georgia for the boy's performance on October 29, 1985. We have an energetic first set, out of the gate with a fine 'Feel Like a Stranger', the 'Friend of the Devil' that follows is very good, Jerry is in excellent voice for this period, much better than many nights during '85. I love how Brent sounds here, personally. I quite enjoyed all of these renditions, and while this is a short first set (some say caused by technical difficulties) it is still a nice set to enjoy on a crisp Autumn afternoon.. I hope you enjoy it. It's Friday the 13th, but I hope you'll feel lucky to listen to this fine second set from October 18, 1978. The second night of the 'From Egypt with Love' run at Winterland, this set features some very strong Drums and Space, highlighted by a guest appearance from Lee Oskar, giving it a decided Egyptian feel. While Jerry flubs the lyrics to 'Terrapin Station' a fine 'Samson and Delilah' more than makes up for it. The show also has a rare set-ending 'Truckin' which is first rate. I hope you enjoy it.. Happy Anniversary Deadpod!
This week on the Deadpod I've decided to feature the second night from the historic 'From Egypt With Love' run at the Winterland in October of 1978. While the opening 'Sugaree' is patched for about the first minute, don't let that dissuade you this one- the sound is crystal clear throughout afterwards, and the band is listening to each other and the result is a dynamic, lovely evening of music. Donna Jean in particular provides some lovely backing vocals on "Looks Like Rain' and 'Music Never Stopped'. Jerry is on point here with several delicious solos as well. This week we continue with the second set from the first night of the band's historic 9 night run at Madison Square Garden in September 1990. This set sparkles with some excellent Garcia leads throughout, starting with the Scarlet, but Jerry soars in the transition to Fire and in the solos there. The set includes not only a nice jammed out 'Truckin' but a sweet 'Terrapin Station' all before drums.. Phil brings home 'The Other One' nicely, and the Wharf Rat is righteous.. Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/14/1990 - Friday Two Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Truckin' > Terrapin Station > Jam > Drums > Space > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia Encore U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092923.mp3 "Summertime, done, come and gone, my oh my"..
This week I've decided to feature the first show of the historic 9-show run at Madison Square Garden in New York City on September 14, 1990. This was without Bruce Hornsby, who didn't make his appearance with the band until the following night; nevertheless this is a fine show, with the band displaying lots of energy and enthusiasm as they return to the Garden for this nice long run of shows. Each of these selections are quite well played. The opening 'Stranger' displays how well they are listening to each other. I'm quite partial to the 'New Minglewood Blues' a tune that I usually categorize as a throw-away, which is really rockin' here. 'Ranble on Rose' features some interesting Jerry midi work with a trumpet solo. I love how this soundboard recording allows us to hear the enthusiastic fan response, for example on 'Black Throated Wind'.. A massive second set of classic Grateful Dead for your listening pleasure this week on the Deadpod. We present the second set from September 9, 1972 at the Hollywood Palladium. There is a whole lot of beautiful music here, starting with a fine China>Rider with a great transition. The 'Friend of the Devil' is nicely done, and its nice to hear the faster original tempo. I also welcome hearing the fine contribution here and thorughout from Keith whose keyboards meld so well. The first of many melting moments happens in the fine 'He's Gone' into 'Truckin' transition. while there is a cut here this is an wonderful version. What is completely off the hook though is 'The Other One'. This is about a 34 minute excursion into the far reaches of space, with Lesh and Garcia leading the way to previously unknown plateaus. I think you'll love this.. and it goes into a very sweet 'Stella Blue'. Be sure and check out the announcements after the 'Stars and Stripes Forever' for a good laugh... The Fall of 1972 was an interesting transitional period for the Grateful Dead. They began to explore longer shows with more exploratory jamming. This week's Deadpod, from September 9th of that year, showcases some of these changes. In this week's first set, we have plenty of classic songs, as well as some intense jamming. Some of the highlights for me include the sweet 'Sugaree', 'Bird Song' and Keith's transitions in 'Black Throated Wind'. Of course I have to mention the almost 19 minute long 'Playin In the Band' - long a vehicle for exploration during this period. As you'll see next week, it was not alone in this show. Grateful Dead Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA 9/9/1972 - Saturday One The Promised Land [3:02] Sugaree [7:04] Me And My Uncle [3:02] Bird Song [11:24] Black Throated Wind [6:32] Tennessee Jed [7:26] Mexicali Blues [3:30] Deal [4:42] Playing In The Band [18:25] Loser [6:44] Johnny B. We continue this week with the second set form the band's performance at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View CA. on August 25, 1993. This is a fine setlist - highlighted by some outstanding work by Garcia especially during the transitions between songs. A Scarlet>Fire opens things up and Jerry gives us some remarkable work during the transition and in the opening solo of Fire. 'Estimated Prophet' begins a nice long stretch of music highlighted by a 'Terrapin Station' and a sweet jam out of Terrapin into Drums and Space. 'All Along the Watchtower' grows out of Space and the post-drums highlight for me is 'Attics of My Life', although there is a bit of static here and there.. A fun 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds', is the encore this night sending folks home with a smile. Grateful Dead Shoreline Amphitheatre Mountain View, CA 8/25/1993 - Wednesday Two Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain Estimated Prophet > Terrapin Station > Drums > Space > All Along The Watchtower > Attics Of My Life > Sugar Magnolia Encore Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod090123.mp3 Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend!
I've had some requests for later day concerts, so here is a good one that is only 30 years old ;) This was the first night of a three day run at Shoreline, and the band sounds as though they are happy to be there and playing well together! This is a fine recording as well, with only a few minor glitches. The first set has plenty of energy throughout, and while it is marred, in my opinion only with the inclusion of 'Easy Answers' the fabulous 'So Many Roads' more than makes up for it. They close with a smoking 'Promised Land' as well. We continue this week with the concluding set from the band's performance on July 25, 1974 in Chicago, Illinois. Things start out with a standalone 'Scarlet Begonias', including some very nice guitar work from Jerry, then they go into a really rockin' 'Big River. A sweet Roses follows with Jerry in good voice. Following 'Jack Straw' they go into one of the few '74 Dark Stars - this one quite cosmic - that goes deep into space land. Towards the end you can hear the 'Slipknot' theme, before they break into a sweet 'Stella Blue'. A rockin' 'Johnny B. Goode' comes out of Stella, which leads into 'Uncle John's Band'. While not really a jamming song, this one has some very nice riffs and leads into 'US Blues'. While the show took place on Thursday, they close the set with 'One More Saturday Night'. 'Ship of Fools' is an unusual encore choice, but ends a very interesting evening of music. Grateful Dead International Amphitheater Chicago, IL 7/25/1974 - Thursday Three Scarlet Begonias Big River It Must Have Been The Roses Jack Straw Dark Star > Jam > Stella Blue Johnny B. Another great show from the summer of 1974 is up on the Deadpod this week, this one from July 25 in Chicago. This first set features 13 (!) songs - and sadly the opening 'Me & My Uncle' doesn't exist in listenable format! This set is typical tight, jazzy Dead of the period. Some of the highlights for me are Keith on 'Brown Eyed Women', a wonderful 'Row Jimmy', and the roaring 'Let It Grow'. I'll play set 2 next week... A torrential rain accompanied the opening 'Box of Rain' on this second set of the band's performance in Washington DC on July 12, 1990. While the rain doesn't dampen spirits, they do go into a 'Victim or the Crime'. Luckily they follow that with the meat of this second set, a great 'Foolish Heart' into 'Dark Star' and Drums and Space into 'All Along the Watchtower'. In one of his last great performances we are treated to a wonderful 'Dear Mr. Fantasy'>'Hey Jude' combination, and then a rocking 'Touch of Grey' to close the set. The boys return with a fine version of 'The Weight' to send everyone home feeling fine. Grateful Dead Robert F. Kennedy Stadium Washington, DC 7/12/1990 - Thursday Two Box Of Rain > Victim Or The Crime > Foolish Heart > Dark Star > Drums > Space > All Along The Watchtower > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude > Touch Of Grey Encore The Weight You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080423.mp3 My thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!
My understanding is that it was raining hard most of this show but that did not stop the band, and Phil in particular, from smoking up the place with a great show. A nice 'Good Times' opens things up, but the band really gets going on a strong 'Bertha'. Brett shines as always on a great 'Just A Little Light' my favorite of his songs. Hard to believe its been 33 years since we lost him :( Other highlights include a fine 'Stagger Lee' and a great 'Cassidy' - listen to the interplay here between Garcia and Lesh. Jerry really shines on 'Tennesse Jed' and the band puts together a fine 'Music Never Stopped' to head into the break.. Grateful Dead Robert F. This week the Deadpod continues with the high energy second set from July 9, 1989 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. This is a rockin' second set, starting with a great 'China>Rider' - check out Jerry when he is on that northbound train! The jam out of Truckin' is also quite excellent and the entire post-drums sequence shows some serious rockin'! Never miss a Sunday show! This week's Deadpod came from a request from Tyler, a friend of the pod, who wanted to hear this classic summer stadium show from 1989. This is from Giants Stadium on July 9, 1989. The band is fired up and ready to satisfy what I'm sure was a loud and raucous crowd, opening with the classic 'Shakedown Street' and then an uptempo 'Jack Straw'. Things slow down a bit with 'West L.A. Fadeaway' then take a darker turn with the relatively new 'Victim or the Crime'. 'Brown-Eyed Women' and 'Queen Jane' straighten things back up, and they close this first set with a sweet 'Bird Song'. Grateful Dead Giants Stadium East Rutherford, NJ 7/9/1989 - Sunday One Shakedown Street [13:01] Jack Straw [5:39] West L.A. This week we'll conclude our excursion into the final Dead & Company tour with the second set from their performance at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA on June 15, 2023. This is a fine set the tone set by a fine opening 'Fire on the Mountain'. The 'Estimated' into 'Eyes of the World' is perhaps the highlight of the set with some particularly fine phrasing throughout. I've heard others say that one of the things they'd miss the most if they do stop touring is hearing 'Drums and Space' live... The closing 'Not Fade Away' and an acoustic 'Ripple' encore is quite heartwarming as well. This week is a first for the Deadpod as I've decided to bring you a fine audience recording of one of the recent Dead & Company Final Tour shows. This is from Philadelphia on June 15, 2023. I think this tour has to rank among one of, if not the best, run that Dead & Co. has performed, and since they do not plan to tour after this I felt it worthwhile to try and document at least one of these fine performances. I'm not claiming this is the finest show on the tour - I haven't had the chance to hear all the shows, but it is a very fine recording thanks to Jeff Travitz who recorded the show. I do hope you enjoy it. I'll play set 2 next week. Dead & Company Citizens Bank Park Philadelphia, PA, Thursday 6/15/2023 Set 1: Man Smart, Woman Smarter (King Radio cover) (tour debut) Shakedown Street (Grateful Dead cover) (>) Cold Rain and Snow (Obray Ramsey cover) Jack Straw (Grateful Dead cover) Brown-Eyed Women (Grateful Dead cover) Dark Star (Grateful Dead cover) (verse 1) (>) El Paso (Marty Robbins cover) (Weir on acoustic) (tour debut) Don't Ease Me In (Henry Thomas cover) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod063023.mp3 My sincere thanks for your kind support. This week we feature the second set from the performance on June 22, 1976 near Philadelphia PA. Again, an unusual opener, with a jazzy 'Playin' going into an intense 'Space Jam' - this one featuring the 'Happiness is Drumming' themes that later developed into 'Fire on the Mountain'. 'The Wheel' follows, with its own spacy elements, including some great Phil riffs, before going back into the 'Playin' reprise. The 'Samson' is strong, and the 'Eyes' pretty speedy for this period. The remainder of the show features some nice rocking - 'Dancin', 'Around and Around' and a great 'Goin' Down the Road' into 'Saturday Night'.. This week the Deadpod returns to 1976, for a sweet show that took place at the Tower Theater near Philadelphia PA on June 22. A great first set starts out with an unusual 'U.S. Blues' opener, then continues to surprise with a nice 'Music Never Stopped', then an excellent 'Crazy Fingers' into a sweet, soulful 'Comes A Time'. A rocking 'Big River' gets the train rolling with 'Tennessee Jed' following. Weir does a soulful 'Looks Like Rain' and Jerry stays in the romantic mood with 'They Love Each Other' Following 'Cassidy' another unusual first set choice, 'Ship of Fools' follows. They close this first set with 'The Promised Land. This week we return to Deer Creek for the second set of the band's performance on June 9, 1991. This second set opens with a scorching Scarlet>Fire.. the boys put it together here, with Jerry adding some nice flute-like touches and Hornsby pulling out the squeezebox during Fire.. one of the best of the year for sure. 'Truckin' follows, with an excellent closing jam into 'New Speedway Boogie' which had recently come out of retirement. Out of Space there is an excellent 'I Need A Miracle' which goes into a wonderful 'Standing on the Moon'. Jerry is wailing on the closing 'I'd rather be with you! ' and is obviously enjoying himself. The band puts it together for a rousing 'Sugar Magnolia' to close the set. 'The Weight' slows things down as they say good bye to Indiana for another year... Summer is here, and it's time for a classic Summer show, this one from the Summer tour of 1991, a very good tour in my opinion. This week I decided to share the first set of the show from June 7, 1991 at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana, a favorite stop on the latter day tour trail. This set starts with a fine 'Half-Step', Jerry has a wonderful closing jam on this one. The Rooster that follows shows Vince doing some sampling on the Hammond organ. 'Stagger Lee', while far from my favorite Dead tune, is done with justice here. They really smoke 'Maggie's Farm', and I'm always appreciative of a good 'Loser' You'll hear Hornsby throughout this performance as some have complained he is too aggressive here, while I am still appreciative of what he brought to the sound. For your Memorial Day weekend we have the second set of the band's performance on May 25, 1974 at the University of California at Santa Barbara. After a rocking 'Promised Land' opener, and 'Ship of Fools' we are treated to a wonderful 'Big River' - Keith's piano work here is outstanding. The meat of this set however comes in the wonderful 'Truckin' that really showcases why this was a vehicle for some most excellent deep space explorations. Phil rattles some bones here, especially in the transition to 'Let It Grow'. Jerry has some great solos here in the 'Let It Grow' which slides perfectly into 'Wharf Rat'. An almost perfect 'Sugar Magnolia' follows, then leads into the 'GDTRFB' and, the obligatory, 'One More Saturday Night'. We're stepping it up this week.. yes! believe it or not, this week's Deadpod is probably even hotter than last week's show from 1973! This one comes from May 25, 1974 at Santa Barbra California. A beautiful afternoon show that must have seemed to go on forever... The first set starts with a U.S. Blues.. a great way to start a show and start this 13 song first set! The entire set is smoking hot, and it has a pedigree - as it comes from Dick Latvala's cassette, so the sound is great. Some of the highlights include a wonderful 'Jack Straw', a stand alone 'Scarlet', Weir 'takes a bottle, cracks him in the jaw' on 'Me & My Uncle', but the true highlight of the set and probably the show is the mind-bending 'China Cat>I Know Your Rider' , in particular the great jamming in the transition - not to be missed. Billy K is on it.. This week we continue listening to the second set of the band's performance at Memorial Auditorium in Uttica New York on March 21, 1973. As was the case last week, we have a very long set this week, around an hour and 43 minutes. This set features more jamming of course, including a jazzy 'Dark Star' marked with some fine drum rolls by Mr. Kreutzmann, a lovely 'Eyes of the World' and several classic songs from the period including 'Me & Bobby McGee'. Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/21/1973 - Wednesday Two [1:45:34] Greatest Story Ever Told [4:43] They Love Each Other [5:21] Mexicali Blues [3:09] Brown Eyed Women [4:49] Big River [3:58] Brokedown Palace [5:14] Me And Bobby McGee [5:12] Weather Report Suite Prelude [0:57] > Dark Star [21:00] > Eyes Of The World [15:48] > Wharf Rat [9:25] Sugar Magnolia [9:17] Casey Jones [6:00] Comments {Dark Star 0:00 > First Verse 9:20 to 10:30 > end 21:00} Is Casey Jones perhaps an encore? Happy Cinco de Mayo! As we roll into the first weekend in May, I wanted to bring out the customary tribute to the Kentucky Derby with a fine 'The Race Is On'. This show does that as well as pays homage to the new, fat, 'Here Comes Sunshine' release from Grateful Dead Productions (Here Comes Sunshine from Dead.net). This show does both, although it takes place in early spring of 1973, rather than in May. This is a huge show - the first set alone has 17 songs that take over one hour and forty minutes of prime Dead. There are too many highlights to mention. As most of you know I love the sound of the band during this period. I invite you to pay attention to Bill's work here - it really sparkles! Of course there is 'The Race Is On', and a nice 'Here Comes Sunshine'. But I enjoy Donna on 'You Ain't Woman Enough', and just when you think that they must need a break after a fine 'China>Rider' they roll into a 15 minute 'Playin' In The Band' to close the set.. Grateful Dead Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY 3/21/1973 - Wednesday One [1:39:37] Bertha [5:32] Me And My Uncle [2:57] Wave That Flag [5:30] Looks Like Rain [7:35] Tennessee Jed [7:34] Box Of Rain [4:46] You Ain't Woman Enough [2:59] Jack Straw [4:37] Row Jimmy [7:38] Beat It On Down The Line [2:58] Here Comes Sunshine [8:05] The Race Is On [2:44] Loser [6:33] El Paso [4:09] China Cat Sunflower [7:18] > I Know You Rider [4:31] Playing In The Band [15:11] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050523.mp3 We'll enjoy set 2 next week... This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from the band's performance on April 15, 1988 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois. The band is tight throughout on this night, starting from the opening Bucket, which goes into a very nice 'Crazy Fingers'. Garcia gives a lovely solo here, and it sets the mood for a reflective 'Looks Like Rain' which follows and on which Weir provides a lovely rendition. 'Terrapin Station' follows, and the boys rev this one up as that train pulls into the station! Drums and Space follows (probably with a bit of a cut somewhere here), followed by a slinkly 'Other One'. Bobby follows that with 'I Need a Miracle' which seems a bit out of place but Brent follows with the 'Dear Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude' combo which was performed quite often during this period. The 'Lovelight' that follows is a perfect counter coming out of that. Jerry gives the crowd a wonderful encore with 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' to close the evening. Grateful Dead Rosemont Horizon Chicago , IL 4/15/1988 - Friday Two Hell In A Bucket [6:28] > Crazy Fingers [8:05] > Looks Like Rain [8:28] > Terrapin Station [11:31] > Drums [2:15#] > Space [#7:13]> The Other One [5:01] > I Need A Miracle [3:19] > Dear Mr. Fantasy [4:28] > Hey Jude [2:05] > Turn On Your Love Light [5:11] Encore Knockin' On Heaven's Door [7:37] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042823.mp3 Thanks for your kind support.
We are going to stick with the late 80's this week as we feature a show from the Rosemont Horizon on April 15, 1988. I believe this is the only Scarlet>Fire opener the boys ever played, which immediately makes the radar go up that we're in for a good show. I don't think this one disappoints. Weir slows things a bit with a 'Walkin' Blues' but Jerry follows with the always favorite 'Candyman'. Brent then goes into an unusual bluesy 'Louie, Louie' which flows really nicely into the uptempo 'Cumberland Blues' Weir sings the Dylan 'Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again' which goes into a nice uptempo 'Deal' to close the set. Grateful Dead Rosemont Horizon Chicago , IL 4/15/1988 - Friday One Scarlet Begonias [6:44] > Fire On The Mountain [9:16] Walkin' Blues [6:30] Candyman [7:11] Louie Louie [4:07] > Cumberland Blues [5:07] Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again [7:57] > Deal [7:29] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042123.mp3 "Lotta poor man make a five dollar bill Will keep him happy all the time Some other fellow's making nothing at all And you can hear him cry"
Hey Now, this week we'll play the second set from the band's performance on April 7, 1987 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. 'Box of Rain' is the opener here, a rather unusual choice. A short 'I Need a Miracle' follows into 'Bertha'. 'Ship of Fools' slows things down, but they then go into another crowd favorite, 'Man Smart, Women Smarter' before going into a fairly lengthy drums and Space. Out of Space, they bridge into 'Gimme Some Lovin' which then segues nicely into a fine 'Morning Dew'. A nice 'Throwing Stones' > 'Not Fade Away' combo closes the set but the band returns for a pleasing rendition of 'The Mighty Quinn'. Grateful Dead Brendan Byrne Arena East Rutherford , NJ 4/7/1987 - Tuesday Two Box Of Rain [5:08] I Need A Miracle [3:20] > Bertha [6:23] Ship Of Fools [8:03] Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:21] > Drums [10:31] > Space [11:#03] > Gimme Some Lovin' [4:46] > Morning Dew [10:43] > Throwing Stones [8:52] > Not Fade Away [5:02] Encore The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [4:21] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041423.mp3 "Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine... 36 years ago the Grateful Dead played this week's show at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ, and also on the radio. This week's first set has some fine rocking although perhaps not alot of jamming. The boys start with 'Touch of Grey' played perhaps a touch too fast, but this goes into a nice 'Minglewood' with a strong Phil bass line, then Jerry sings a great 'Friend of the Devil'. There are seven beats to start the 'Beat It On Down the Line'. There is a nice keyboard solo in' Big River', and the 'West L.A. Fadeaway' is tight and funky. There is a double start in 'Hell In A Bucket' which starts for about a minute before Weir stops the band and wants to start over. Garcia gives some feedback before they eventually restart and play the song successfully... Grateful Dead Brendan Byrne Arena East Rutherford , NJ 4/7/1987 - Tuesday Set 1 Tuning Touch Of Grey > New Minglewood Blues Friend Of The Devil Beat It On Down The Line Stagger Lee Mama Tried > Big River West L.A. After five months of 'retirement' the Grateful Dead returned to the stage at this benefit concert in San Francisco on March 23, 1975. While they were billed as 'Jerry Garcia and Friends' and Ned Lagin and Merl Saunders were sitting in, this performance was seen by most as confirming the rumors that the Grateful Dead's retirement was ending. I will leave it to you to imagine what it must have been like to have been in the audience and heard this wonderful piece of psychedelic music for the first time. Completely instrumental they blew the crowd away with the musicianship displayed here. When they finished, they broke out a spectacular 'Johnny B Goode' for good measure. Grateful Dead Kezar Stadium San Francisco, CA 3/23/1975 - Sunday One Blues For Allah > Stronger Than Dirt Or Milkin' The Turkey > Drums > Stronger Than Dirt Or Milkin' The Turkey > Blues For Allah Encore Johnny B. This week on the Deadpod we'll hear the second set from March 5, 1992 at Hampton Virginia. This starts with a very nice 'Eyes of the World', and you will immediately recognize the presence of both Hornsby and Welnick on this long 14+minute version. 'Way To Go Home' follows. I think this is the 4th time I've played this on the Deadpod, and the first since 2017. Consider it a watermark of the times, I know its noone's favorite tune. Next Bobby delivers a powerful 'Estimated Prophet' which flows into a fine 'He's Gone'. Drums and a fairly long Space, standard for the times, follows. 'The Wheel' flows out of 'Space' with plenty of keyboards and an ensemble singing lead. 'I Need a Miracle' showcases Weir's energy and leads into a fine version of 'So Many Roads' one of their finest latter songs. You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032423.mp3 Grateful Dead Hampton Coliseum Hampton, VA 3/5/1992 - Thursday Two Eyes Of The World > Way To Go Home > Estimated Prophet > He's Gone > Drums > Space > The Wheel > I Need A Miracle > So Many Roads > Good Lovin' Encore U.S. Blues "So many roads, I tell you New York to San Francisco So many roads I know All I want is one to take me home"
This week the Deadpod moves twenty years in the future from last week's set, this one which took place on March 5, 1992 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton Virginia. The first set, short as was the norm during this period of the band's existence, opens with a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank'. The boys sound energetic and Jerry plays some fine licks here, especially during the 'Slipknot'. A long bluesy 'The Same Thing' follows then a sweet 'Jack-A-Roe'. Phil delivers a great 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' and Bobby closes the set with a strong 'Let It Grow' We'll have the second set next week. Grateful Dead Hampton Coliseum Hampton, VA 3/5/1992 - Thursday One Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; The Same Thing ; Jack-A-Roe ; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues ; Let It Grow You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031723.mp3 Hope you have a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day! thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod
This week we move onto the second set from this massive show that took place on March 16, 1973 at the Nassau Coliseum. When you look at the setlist and the timings you might be tempted to think that the first half of the show is just a warm up to the huge Dark Star jam that takes place in set 2, but that would be a mistake. The band screams during these first three numbers in particular! I love the Bertha here, and when Jerry gets to Loser he really lets looks on the 'Sweet Susie'! The aforementioned Dark Star starts off methodically, but gradually picks up momentum and moves into unfamiliar spaces. The drumming is superb here in my opinion, and when the band finally move back to Earth on 'Truckin' with an explosion of energy you think that surely this must be the finale, but no, a wonderful Morning Dew follows to close the set. Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 3/16/1973 - Friday Two The Promised Land [2:51] > Bertha [5:38] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:57] Loser [6:39] Big River [4:15] Don't Ease Me In [3:06] Me And My Uncle Dark Star [26:30] > Truckin' [8:26] > Morning Dew [11:33] Encore Sugar Magnolia You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031023.mp3 "at least I'm enjoying the ride"
This week's Deadpod features another fabulous show from 1973. This week's show comes shortly after the death of Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan on the 8th of February 1973, and is the 2nd night of a three night run at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY, on March 16, 1973. Folks this is a massive 14 song first set, and the come out of the gate flying with a high energy 'China>Rider', complete with a great, perhaps the first, 'feelin' groovy' jam in the transition. The new 'Wave That Flag' follows with some nice keyboard work from Keith. A fine version of 'Looks Like Rain' follows, introduced with a nice intro from Phil. There are highlights throughout the rest of this set, including an early version of 'They Love Each Other' but the closing 'Playin' In the Band' is sure to bring some smiles.... Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 3/16/1973 - Friday One China Cat Sunflower [6:09] > Jam [1:51] > I Know You Rider [4:33] Jack Straw [4:32] Wave That Flag [5:35] Looks Like Rain [7:01] Ramble On Rose [6:23] Box Of Rain [4:43] Beat It On Down The Line [3:17] They Love Each Other [5:28] El Paso [4:34] Row Jimmy [7:58] Mexicali Blues [3:23] Bird Song Playing In The Band You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030323.mp3 Keep on rollin' just a mile to go...
This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance on February 21, 1991 in Oakland CA. This is a very nice second set, sans Bruce Hornsby, it starts out with the unusual set opening 'Playin In the Band'. This version is quite nicely jammed out and just when you wonder when they'll come down we get a 'Terrapin Station' tease.. but no, they go instead into a tight 'Uncle John's Band'. Jerry sounds great and the song is very tight. They finally do go into 'Terrapin' following this, and that leads into another jam which then goes into Drums and Space which accompanies the Dragon Parade celebrating Chinese New Year. 'Eyes of the World' comes out of 'Space' the last time this ever happens, then a very good version of 'Throwing Stones' into 'Not Fade Away'. The 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' was always a fine ending. Two Playing In The Band [15:44] (1) > Uncle John's Band [10:20] (2) ; Terrapin Station (2) > Jam [6:15] > Drums > Space > Eyes Of The World (2) ; Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away Encore Knockin' On Heaven's Door Comments (1) terrapin Station tease [:40] (2) with Airto Moreira You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022423.mp3 Thank you for your kind support.
This week we feature a fine show from February 21, 1991 at the Oakland Coliseum. This was the last night of a three day run to open the year for the band, and this particular run was without Bruce Hornsby. Any show that opens with 'Help>Slip>Frank' offers great promise and I think they boys delivered on this night. The 'Slipknot' in particular is especially well-formed, and sweet to hear. They follow with a good 'Rooster' then after some indecision, 'Loser' follows. Bobby plays a sweet 'Stuck Inside of Mobile' then a happy 'Tennessee Jed' leads into the 'Promised Land' set closer. Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 2/21/1991 - Thursday One Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Little Red Rooster ; Loser ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; Tennessee Jed ; The Promised Land You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021723.mp3 "One way or another This darkness got to give"
This week we bring you the conclusion of the band's performance on February 28, 1970 at the Family Dog at the Great Highway in San Francisco California. The set starts with 'Good Lovin' complete with a very interesting drum solo followed by a wonderful jam. The drummers return for a unique set between 'Alligator' and 'The Other One', which is followed by the rare 'Mason's Children'. The band returns to 'Lovelight' to close out the set. Sadly we don't have the encore, which was supposedly 'Uncle John's Band'. Grateful Dead Family Dog at the Great Highway San Francisco, CA 2/28/1970 - Saturday Part 2 Good Lovin' [1:43] > Drums [3:13] > Good Lovin' [8:00];[0:22]%[0:02] ; Big Boss Man [5:05];[0:07] % Casey Jones % [0:20] ; Alligator [3:48] > Drums [6:25] > The Other One [9:27] > Mason's Children [5:13] > Jam [0:50] > Turn On Your Love Light [12:24];[0:09] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021023.mp3 Thanks for your kind support.
Well, I think that groundhog saw his shadow, but I've got a show for you this week that is sure to warm you up.. this one comes from way back in 1970 - from February 28, 1970 in San Francisco. While this was probably one long set, I'm going to play part 1 this week and part 2 next week. The show starts with an unusual 'Lovelight' to open, and it has a different sound to it in this spot, a bit more uptempo from the start, but quite fun to hear. After going into a 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Cumberland Blues' Jerry announces that they want to bring things 'down' a bit with some acoustic numbers. The next three tunes are just lovely renditions of 'Monkey & The Engineer', 'Little Sadie' and 'Black Peter'. The rest of the set is electric, starting with a smoking 'China>Rider'. Jerry slows it down a bit again with 'High Time' but we'll end this week's Deadpod with the always delightful 'Dire Wolf'. Grateful Dead Family Dog at the Great Highway San Francisco, CA 2/28/1970 - Saturday One Turn On Your Love Light [#12:47] > Me And My Uncle [3:02][0:11] Cumberland Blues [4:53][2:06] Monkey And The Engineer [1:40][0:27] Little Sadie [2:47] > Black Peter [8:35] Tuning [0:43] China Cat Sunflower [3:13] > Jam [3:09] > I Know You Rider [4:20] > High Time [6:35] > Dire Wolf [4:35][0:10] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod020323.mp3 Thanks for listening!
PLEASE NOTE if you automatically downloaded this episode this morning you may have a corrupted file please redownload from this link! Thank you! This week we conclude our visit to the Uptown Theater with the second set from the band's performance on January 31, 1978. This set starts with a fine Scarlet>Fire with a wonderful transition with Donna hitting this just right. The Samson is raging, then the band goes into a delicious Terrapin Station, into a sweet Playing with Phil really adding some nice bottom. A short Drums and Space leads into an intense 'Black Peter', much longer than the earlier versions, then 'Truckin' leads into a set closing, and quite enjoyable 'Good Lovin'. No encore. Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 1/31/1978 - Tuesday Two Scarlet Begonias [11:57] > Fire On The Mountain [9:16] Samson And Delilah [8:15] Terrapin Station [10:11] > Playing In The Band [9:#04] > Drums [1:26#] > Space [7:42] > Black Peter [12:54] > Truckin' [8:53] > Good Lovin' [5:53] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012723.mp3 Thank you all for your kindness.
I'm going to do something I don't normally do this week - play the show immediately following last week's show.. and there's plenty of good reasons to do so. This show - 1/31/78 from the Uptown Theater in Chicago is very very good. The opening 'Mississippi Half-Step' gives us a taste of what is to come - check out Garcia's licks here, then we get a smoking hot 'Passenger' with outstanding contributions by Phil and Jerry and fine vocals from Donna Jean. 'Tennessee Jed' follows and again, the contributions by the ensemble make for a most enjoyable listen, in particular the great jam before the coda. A lyrical 'El Paso' follow with Bob here in excellent vocal form. The 'Candyman' that follows is patched from an audience source, but Jerry still sounds soulful. Following 'Minglewood' and a nice 'They Love Each Other' is a simmering 'Let It Grow' to close the set.. Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 1/31/1978 - Tuesday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [10:10] Passenger [5:15] Tennessee Jed [8:51] El Paso [4:12] Candyman [6:50] New Minglewood Blues [5:05] They Love Each Other [6:54] Let It Grow [11:58] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012023.mp3 Be kind my friends :)
This week we feature the second set from the band's performance at the Uptown Theater in Chicago Il. on January 30, 1978. I'm quite impressed with this set. It starts off with a fine 'Bertha' which goes into an excellent 'Good Lovin', followed by 'Ship of Fools'. What follows however is over an hour of non-stop Dead magic. 'Estimated'>'Eyes' where Jerry has some interstellar noodling going into a sweet 'Stella Blue' . Then a rare triple-dose of Jerry as the band goes into a rare, late set 'Franklin's Tower' This combination of Stella>Franklins is a first and never repeated. A rockin' 'Around and Around' closes the set but they return for a signature 'Johnny B Goode' encore. Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 1/30/1978 - Monday Two Bertha [6:33] > Good Lovin' [5:23] Ship Of Fools [7:34] Estimated Prophet [12:47] > Eyes Of The World [11:56] > Space [6:30] > Stella Blue [9:38] > Franklin's Tower [14:01] > Around And Around [8:08] Encore Johnny B. As we head into the New Year, here's a January show, a rarity for the band, from the intimate Uptown Theater in Chicago on January 30th, 1978. While this first set doesn't have the jamming that you'll hear in set 2, it is tight and Jerry's voice is much better than it was earlier in the month. There is some funny back and forth between songs, and the Lazy Lightning is greatly improved by Phil's contributions. Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 1/30/1978 - Monday One The Promised Land [4:15] Dire Wolf [3:30] Mexicali Blues [3:32] > Big River [5:45] Brown Eyed Women [5:28] Looks Like Rain [8:04] Peggy-O [7:01] It's All Over Now [7:53] Deal [5:37] Lazy Lightnin' [3:22] > Supplication [5:32] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010623.mp3 Hope you are all well and that you're New Year has started strong! thanks so much for your kind support.
As we countdown the minutes until 2023, you should enjoy this gem of a show from 33 years ago - December 30, 1989. I don't believe I'm engaging in hyperbole if I say this is a great second set from this period of the band's history. There's not a bad song here. Jerry smokes his leads in 'Jack Straw' and 'I Know You Rider'. This 'Estimated Prophet is one of the best ever. I even dare say the drums and space, with Airto, is one of the best you'll hear. I'm a sucker for a great 'Standing on the Moon' and Jerry delivers on this one. This is one of those shows that makes me wish for time travel. I hope you enjoy it! Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 12/30/1989 - Saturday Two Jack Straw [5:58] > China Cat Sunflower [5:26] > I Know You Rider [5:12] Estimated Prophet [12:34] > Terrapin Station [13:51] > Jam [1:51] % Drums [#11:#32] (1) > Space [7:47] > I Will Take You Home [4:18] > The Other One [10:18] (2) > Standing On The Moon [7:57] > One More Saturday Night [4:02] Encore It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [6:43] Comments (1) with Airto (2) { theme [2:40] verse 1 [0:41] theme [5:02] verse 2 [0:40] theme [1:15] } You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122322.mp3 Have a safe and very happy New Year! thank you for all your support this last year my friends..
As Christmas approaches, Hanukkah continues, and the big snowstorm closes in on many of us, I hope that this week's Deadpod brings you some joy this week! I bring you the first set of what is a really great show from December 30, 1989 in Oakland California. The opening 'Bertha' flows into a rare first-set 'Good Lovin' which then flows into an excellent version of 'Sugaree'. The entire set is quite well played, and while Airto joins at 'Sugaree' and remains the rest of the show, his contributions are a bit hidden most of the time. The set-closing 'Music Never Stopped' features some interesting Midi Horns from Garcia, but the entire set is energetic and a pleasure to hear. I hope you enjoy it. Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 12/30/1989 - Saturday One Bertha [6:22] > Good Lovin' [4:02] > Sugaree [9:30] Walkin' Blues [6:42] Jack-A-Roe [4:10] When I Paint My Masterpiece [5:02] West L.A. Whoa! Another 2 hour plus Deadpod this week as we explore the second set of the band's performance at Duke University in Durham North Carolina on December 8, 1973. This massive second set contains both its share of standard tunes and psychedelic moments. They start out with some standard rockers - 'Around and Around' 'Ramble On Rose', 'El Paso'. (but don't miss the fun introduction with Phil and Bob). Things really get interesting with the jam from 'Truckin' into a fine 'Nobody's Fault' jam'. Jerry takes us on a visit to the outer limits with the jam that finally disolves into 'The Other One'. The music disolves into a sweet 'Wharf Rat' and if that weren't enough a fine 'Stella Blue'. You'd think the 'Johnny B Goode' that follows would signal the end of the show, but Jerry isn't having it and they go into a nice 'Uncle John's Band'. Grateful Dead Cameron Indoor Stadium - Duke University Durham, NC 12/8/1973 - Saturday Two Around And Around Ramble On Rose El Paso Row Jimmy Greatest Story Ever Told > Bertha He's Gone > Truckin' > Nobody's Fault But Mine > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Stella Blue Johnny B. A really BIG show this week on the Deadpod! From December 8, 1973 at Duke University we have this gem on this week's Deadpod. A huge 16 song first set featuring some really wonderful renditions and great jamming on some of these tunes. An example is Jerry on the 'Mexicali Blues', a very fine version of 'Me & Bobby McGee', and a complete 'Weather Report Suite'. For fine jamming, the China>Rider can't be beat - including a 'Feelin' Groovy' jam (although it does have a cut)... Think that a show from 56 years ago doesn't rock? If so I challenge you to listen to this week's Deadpod... from November 19, 1966 in San Francisco, this primal Dead will surely knock your socks off... Such amazing energy and emotion on display here. The boys are spreading their wings while still exploring the legacy of the blues in the midst of Beatle mania. There are many highlights here, but I have to call out 'Cream Puff War', and 'Dancin' In The Streets' (despite the tragic cut at the end) as virtuoso examples of primal Grateful Dead. The entire second set (what we have of it) is a testament to the power and presence of Pigpen. Enough said. I know that I've previously said how enamored I am of the music the Grateful Dead created in the Fall of 1973, specifically during November. Luckily for us, there is an exceptional set that has yet to be released commercially nor here on the Deadpod that I have the privilege of featuring this week. This occurred on November 1, 1973 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. While we only have the second set of this wonderful performance, I think you'll agree it is a much-needed respite from the noise and confusion of the current season. The band reaches peaks of expression here on selections such as 'Playin' In the Band', 'He's Gone' and 'Truckin'. The style is jazz forward and experimental. The fact that Billy is alone on percussion probably allows him to be more supple and driving at times, especially during 'He's Gone'. I recommend time and space to savor this one, I think you'll find its worth it.. Happy Thanksgiving! As is the tradition on the Deadpod, this week we feature an acoustic set from the band. This one comes from the Warfield in San Francisco on October 3, 1980. This one is in exceptional quality, I think, and so far as I can tell I haven't featured it before :) Thank you so much for the privilege of sharing this music with you over the years. I can't tell you how much your kind words and support has meant. I hope that this finds you and yours safe, healthy and gathered together in love today. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance in Oakland on November 20,1985. The second set features some very nice highlights, including an excellent Sailor>Saint and an outstanding 'Terrapin Station'. This is a nice long version, punctuated by an excellent jam by Garcia going into the Brent tune 'Don't Need Love'. The Sugar Magnolia was memorable as Bobby played rock star and climbed up on the speaker stacks during 'SSDD'... Grateful Dead Henry J. A high energy first set for your enjoyment on this week's Deadpod comes to us from the Henry Kaiser convention center in Oakland California, on November 20, 1985. The first night of a three night 'hometown' run, starts off with a roaring 'Jack Straw'. Jerry follows with a lovely 'Peggy O', then Bobby performs the bluesy 'CC Rider' featuring some nice effects on the Hammond from Brent. Following poor old 'Stagger Lee', Bobby boxes with the Apocalypse on 'My Brother Esau'. Jerry brings out 'High Time', although his voice struggles a bit with it, I still enjoy the tune. They end the set with a trifecta of high energy tunes, 'Beat It On Down the Line', then 'Promised Land' into 'Don't Ease'.. Set 2 is quite interested and scheduled for next week... The Dead played this second set 45 years ago today, on 10/28/77 at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Kansas City KS. This is a fine display of the rhythmic richness of the band at this high water mark of their career. The set starts with a high octane 'Samson & Delilah' then things slow down a bit for a sweet 'Candyman' and Donna Jean's 'Sunrise'. They start to rev back up with 'Passenger' then we get one of the real high water marks of this set with a great 'He's Gone'. Following a very short Drums, we get a unusual 'Not Fade Away'>'Stella Blue'>'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' combination, one of only two the band every did. After the set-closing 'Around and Around' they return for an excellent 'Casey Jones', not to be missed. We're going to close out the month of October with a great show from 1977. This one comes to us from Kansas City KS, on October 28, 1977. This week's first set is very melodic throughout, with a nice laid back rhythm for the most part. Promised Land is the opener (don't fear -the audience splice only lasts a few moments), then a sweet 'They Love Each Other'. One of the things I love about this recording is the clarity of each instrument - which is evident especially in the 'Cassidy' that follows. This entire set is quite well done, but I would draw your attention to the 'Supplication' and 'Deal' that closes the set - there is some really fine jamming going on there! Grateful Dead Soldier's And Sailors Memorial Hall Kansas City, KS 10/28/1977 - Friday One The Promised Land [4:16] ; They Love Each Other [7:10] ; Cassidy [4:33] ; Tennessee Jed [8:59] ; Mexicali Blues [3:05] > Big River [5:47] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:01] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:13] > Supplication [5:48] ; Deal [6:19] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102122.mp3 I'll play the second set next week. Thanks to Steve for this fine suggestion. Hope you got whatever Dead & Co. tickets you wanted... Be well and don't let the crazy noise this time of year get to you :)
While I played this show, unbeknownst to me, ten years ago on the Deadpod, I am still going to present the wonderful second set this week. This show, from Indianapolis on October 1, 1976, features a sweet second set. While a 'Might As Well' opener might not signal such a beauty, the 'Samson' that follows quickly convinces that we are in a for a treat. Great interplay throughout from Jerry and Phil. When the 'Help>Slip>Frank' that follows gets rolling the band hits on all cylinders. I especially love Keith's contribution in the great 'Slipknot!' jam here. A somewhat short 'Dancin' goes into an even shorter 'drums' but 'The Wheel' that follows is sweet. Following 'Ship of Fools', Bobby attempts to go back into 'Dancin' in a very unusual jam, but the boys move into a 'Goin' Down the Road' into 'Saturday Night' to end the set. This week's Deadpod features a set from the Fall tour of 1976. If you're not familiar with this period I think you'll enjoy this week's selection, which comes from Market Square Arena, in Indianapolis Indiana. This is a fine set, in my opinion, which really gets going once they hit 'Deal'. The 'Cassidy' is no slouch and 'Big River' rocks as usual. The highlight of the set is probably the stand-alone 'Scarlet Begonias' which leads us into the set closing 'Promised Land' Set 2 next week is no slouch! Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, Ind. Fifty years ago today, the Grateful Dead played this free concert in Washington D.C. I present the fine second set for your entertainment today. I hope you agree that it is an excellent recording and contains some quite sublime moments. I'll draw your attention to just a few.. the 'He's Gone' is drawn out and heartfelt. I'm also a big fan of Jerry's performance of 'Brokedown Palace' here. 'The Other One' shows the boys more than willing to take the jam to the stars, Phil in particular is outstanding here. 'Sing Me Back Home' again, Jerry is sublime. I love the 'Uncle John's Band' closer.. while we don't have the encore, I think we have more than enough here to raise our spirits.. Grateful Dead Reeves Field - American University Washington, DC 9/30/1972 - Saturday Two Greatest Story Ever Told He's Gone Me And My Uncle Brokedown Palace Truckin' > The Other One > Sing Me Back Home Sugar Magnolia Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo Uncle John's Band You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod093022.mp3 Thank you for listening, I so hope you enjoy!
This week's Deadpod features a 'free' show that took place on the campus of American University in Washington D.C. on September 30, 1972. This is a fairly standard '72 setlist, however it is a nice collection of well-played standards and we are fortunate to have such a nice recording (albeit there is a cut in the wonderful 'I Know You Rider'). Bob Weir is a bit higher in the mix than usual which results in an interesting listen. He is also in fine voice, hitting some higher notes than he was able to a few years later. Besides the aforementioned China>Rider, which is wonderful, some of the other highlights here are an excellent 'Black Throated Wind', 'Birdsong' (before which you can hear Bobby complaining about the stage heaters), a hot 'Big River', and a jammed out 'Playin' In the Band'. Pardon the brevity but as I'm feeling under the weather this intro will have to be even briefer than usual.. a find second set from the first night of the legendary Madison Square Garden run of 1990 features an excellent 'Scarlet>Fire' .. I love Phil and Jerry's contributions here, especially on the incendiary jams in Fire.. It's been awhile since I've featured a good 'Terrapin Station' and that's here too, as is a wonderful 'Wharf Rat'. All in all an excellent early 90s second set.. I hope you enjoy it. Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/14/1990 - Friday Two Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Truckin' > Terrapin Station > Jam > Drums > Space > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia Encore U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091622.mp3 Hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to hearing from you.
This week I'm featuring a show from the famous September 1990 run at Madison Square Garden in NYC, NY. I had thought I'd already played all of this run, but realized I hadn't played this - the first show of the run without Bruce Hornsby. This is a fine show, the band is jazzed to be back at the Garden and I think Jerry is in fine form. The opening 'Feel Like a Stranger' is a great choice, and shows the boys are here to play.. a fine 'Sugaree' follows, although I wish Vince would have dialed it down just a bit. The 'Minglewood' that follows is one of the better versions in my opinion. Other highlights here include a fine 'Black Throated Wind' and 'Jack-A-Roe', both of which feature fine vocals from Bob and Jerry, respectively. Be sure and also tune in next week for one of the best 'Scarlet>Fire's' of the decade. This Labor Day weekend the Deadpod brings you the 2nd set from the band's performance at the Shoreline Amphitheater on August 18, 1991. There's alot of joy in this set, I think, as the band seems to be enjoying themselves throughout. A fine 'Deal' opens things up - Hornsby is evident here and throughout. The band delivers a topnotch version of 'Samson and Delilah' to follow. A somewhat sloppy 'Mississippi Half-Step' leads into a rather funky 'Feel Like a Stranger'. Out of the Rhythm Devils we get a favorite of mine, 'China Doll', then the band closes with a rocking trifecta of 'Goin' Down the Road', 'Throwin' Stones' and 'Not Fade Away'. One of the highlights is the perfectly executed 'Brokedown Palace' encore. Here's a fun and happy Sunday show on this week's Deadpod - from the Shoreline Amphitheater on August 18, 1991. This first set features a very fine 'Jack-A-Roe' and some great piano work by Bruce Hornsby on 'CC Rider'. Jerry also brings out the Dylan cover 'It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry' which made its appearance this summer. One of the highlights of the set is Bobby seemingly forgetting the words to 'Beat It On Down the Line'...later in that song, Hornsby creates a 'false stop' and you hear the band talking about it before a short reprise :) A great 'Johnny B. Goode' ends the set.. This week's Deadpod continues the band's performance in Kansas City on August 3, 1982 at the Starlight Theater. This is a solid show, with a long, funky 'Shakedown Street' to kick things off. That flows into 'Samson', then a beautiful rendition of 'To Lay Me Down' follows. Next up is a great version of 'Let It Grow', with some nice interplay between Jerry and Brent leading into the Rhythm Devils portion of the set. 'He's Gone' flows nicely out of 'Space', and is followed by a good 'Other One' and 'Stella Blue'. The boys close with a feel good 'Sugar Mag' and return with a 'Casey Jones' encore. A fine first set from a beautiful venue is on tap for this week's Deadpod. This performance, from August 3, 1982 at the Starlight Theater in Kansas City Missouri, features a most excellent first set. Jerry brings the 'Mississippi Half-Step' to life by shaping the sound quite sweetly, and in particular the transition into 'Franklin's Tower' is not to be missed. Note the fine interplay with Phil here. It is difficult to pick out highlights in this set as everything is quite good, but note the beautiful 'Peggy O'. There's a nice transition beween 'El Paso' and 'Cumberland Blues', which is also a smoker. Jerry does 'Althea' justice with some nice soloing, and the 'Big Railroad Blues' into 'Man Smart' is an unusual pairing. All in all I think this is a fine example of the period and hope you enjoy it! This week's Deadpod features the continuation of the band's performance at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco on July 13, 1976. There are issues with the tape on 'Music Never Stopped' but this clears up quickly so please be patient. 'It Must Have Been the Roses' follows, then 'Samson' but the highlight here is a beautiful version of 'High Time'. After some pause, they go into 'Saint Stephen' into 'Not Fade Away' , quite interesting at times..they then move into 'Sugar Magnolia' and you think that this must be the end of the set, but Jerry comes back with a stunning 'Stella Blue'. They do the 'Sugar Mag' reprise, but then return for a pretty outrageous encore - a long and funky 'Dancin' In the Streets'.. As we wind down the month of July and head into the Days Between, I came across this recording from the historic July 1976 run at the Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco, CA which I thought was most enjoyable so I wanted to share it with you. This is from the second night, July 13. I hadn't heard the show in this quality before so I hope you enjoy it. Some of the highlights here include a very pretty 'Peggy-O' and a truly wonderful 'Crazy Fingers'. Checck out Phil on the latter and how the spanish-type jam just goes on and on... that goes into a very nice 'Let It Grow' and then to a rare first-set 'drums' segment. This week's Deadpod features the audience recording of the second set from 7/14/81 at McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado. A funky 'Shakedown Street' opens up the proceedings, followed by 'Samson & Delilah' and an intimate 'High Time'. Bobby blows the circus whistle for the start of a strong 'Truckin', punctuated by a great Jerry solo going into 'Eyes of the World' (unfortunately a small cut in that). Drums and Space lead into a short 'Other One', but then we are treated to a really beautiful 'Wharf Rat'. An odd 'Miracle' tease by Weir surrenders to 'Good Lovin' to close the set - they return to do a 'U.S. Blues' encore. "Being summer, I took off my shirt...." well I'm not taking my shirt off but I am bringing you a summertime treat I think, with an excellent audience recording of the band's performance in Denver on July 14, 1981. As I listened to this tape it just struck me that the feeling of being there that a good audience recording gives you was perfect for this time of the year, when many of us have been lucky enough to experience some live music in person.. I do hope you have! This show has some excellent energy throughout, the Minglewood has a couple very nice Jerry solos, the 'Cassidy' is nicely paced, and leads into a sweet 'To Lay Me Down'. Weir has some fun with 'Me & My Uncle' which is blistering.. as is the outstanding 'Big Railroad Blues' The highlight of the set is the Birdsong>Sailor>Saint, however. It is only the the 14th electric birdsong since 9/15/73, and the only time that Sailor comes out of Birdsong. It is excellent. Here's the second set from the band's performance at Autzen Stadium in Eugene on June 23, 1990. A rather slow and dreamy 'Eyes of the World' leads us into a great 'Looks Like Rain', Bobby really does it justice here. 'Crazy Fingers' follows and while Jerry's voice is a bit craggy here its still, for me, a pleasure to hear. The band busts it out on the following 'Playin' In the Band' which opens up beautifully into 'Uncle John's Band', then returns for a full-blown 'Playin' Reprise'. 'The Wheel' flows out of space, then after a rocking 'Miracle', Jerry commands us with a powerful 'Morning Dew'. Summertime.. and the livin' is easy... This week I decided to bring you a show from the summer tour of 1990, one of my favorites.. this comes to us from Eugene Oregon from June 23, 1990. A fine afternoon show, Little Feat was the opening act and the fans were treated to what I think is a great display of the band at this period of time. A powerful 'Feel Like a Stranger' opens things up, then Jerry gets a little funky (and sloppy with lyrics) with a 'West LA Fadeaway'. 'Me and My Uncle' transitions into a (rare for the year) 'Cumberland Blues' .. instead of the usual 'Big River'. Brent brings out 'Far From Me' another unusual choice, then Jerry plays a nice 'They Love Each Other'. Following Weir's 'Cassidy', 'Tennessee Jed' leads into a rocking 'Promised Land' to close the first set. Prepare to be psychedelicized this week as we listen to set 2 of the Dead's performance at the Fillmore West in San Francisco on June 7, 1970. The boys take us right to the deep end with a Cryptical to open set 2, then blow into a great Other One, and back into Cryptical. Drums then take us into a rare 'The Main Ten' jam before we get to hear the very first 'Sugar Magnolia'. Pigpen is in fine form on 'It's A Man's World' (and later on the set closing Good Lovin'). Sittin' On Top of the World is a treat to my ears, and who doesn't smile when they get to hear 'Cosmic Charlie'? I think you'll enjoy this one from a year that we have far too few good recordings. This week's Deadpod is a short but very sweet show from June 7, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. This week's first set is 'relatively' acoustic, that is the first two songs are acoustic, but Jerry uses an electric guitar and Weir acoustic on the remainder of the som et. Frdeadlists.com: " David Nelson plays mandolin on Cold Jordan and Swing Low, and he and Marmaduke contribute backup vocals. Before Cumberland Blues Garcia says "we're gonna do a few semi-electric numbers. We've got a million new labels." There is a short cut at 2:48 of Cumberland. Marmaduke adds backup vocals to Me And My Uncle." This was a birthday request from a great friend of the Deadpod - happy (early) birthday Steve! This one is a treat for me to listen to so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do... this second set from the band's performance at the first 'Day on the Green' on June 8, 1974. These '74 Wall of Sound shows are some of my favorites, as you can tell from the opening 'U.S. Blues' that the boys are here in full force. Keith and Phil are rocking and the entire ensemble sounds great throughout. The 'cosmic' 'Playin in the Band' clocks in at over 24 minutes and despite a scream or two from Donna will definitely raise you to a happy place. For me, there is not much music that makes me happier than an 'Eyes of the World' like this one.. I can't help but relax and let me take me downstream.. Thanks for listening my friends.. This week's Deadpod comes from the famous 'Day on the Green' #1 at Oakland Stadium on June 8, 1974. This first set of this 'Wall of Sound' show, features less jamming than will be coming up in set 2, but still some wonderful playing, highlighted by some great contributions from Keith and Phil. I particularly enjoy the stand-alone Scarlet and the Greatest Story Ever Told! A fine second set from Boston Garden on May 12, 1980 to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend adventures. This one starts with an excellent 'Feel Like a Stranger', followed by an intense 'Ship of Fools'. A rolling 'Estimated Prophet' and 'He's Gone' follows, but then the band dissolves into a unique and interesting 'Caution' jam for about 10 minutes, for me the highlight of the set. Drums follows, then a 'Saint of Circumstance' which flows into the 'Wharf Rat' in the ballad slot. 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set which they then follow with a 'US Blues' encore. Grateful Dead Boston Garden Boston, MA 5/12/1980 - Monday Two Feel Like A Stranger [8:12] ; Ship Of Fools [8:06] ; Estimated Prophet[11:21] > He's Gone (1) [21:35] > Drums [9:19] > Space [2:03] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:24] > Wharf Rat [8:54] > Sugar Magnolia [7:41] Encore U.S. Blues [4:56] (1) He's Gone [11:35] > Caution Jam [10:00] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052722.mp3 Thank you for your support of the Deadpod. I hope you have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.
One of my favorite tours, the Spring tour of 1980 will give us one more fine show on this week's Deadpod. From the old Boston Garden on May 12, 1980 the boys shook the rafters on this Monday night with a rocking first set. They come out blazing with a great 'Jack Straw>Alabama Getaway>El Paso' opening trifecta. While this is an unusual combo, Jerry and Brent in particular shine on these opening tunes. A nice 'Althea' follows, then Bobby takes the lead on 'Lazy Lightning> Supplication'. We get a short but sweet Brent number in 'Far From Me' before Bobby takes us back down to Minglewood. The closing China>Rider is excellent, highlighted for me, by Jerry's emotion when he is on that northbound train. Grateful Dead Boston Garden Boston, MA 5/12/1980 - Monday One Jack Straw [5:21] > Alabama Getaway [4:53] > El Paso [4:12] Althea [8:16] Lazy Lightnin' [3:22] > Supplication [4:44] Far From Me [3:37] New Minglewood Blues [7:08] China Cat Sunflower [5:04] > I Know You Rider [6:07] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052022.mp3 Thanks for your kind support, and stay in touch!
