Today on Let There Be Talk I've got a true guitar God in the house — one of the most technically insane, melodic, and joyful players to ever plug into a Marshall… the one and only Paul Gilbert. You first felt the shred attack with Racer X, where the speed was blistering and the musicianship was on another planet. Then came the arena-sized hooks and monster riffs with Mr. Big — yes, the band that gave the world "To Be With You," but also some of the fiercest guitar playing of the late '80s and '90s. Now Paul is back with a brand-new solo record, WROC — and as always, he's pushing himself, chasing tone, melody, and that endless curiosity that's kept him evolving for decades. We dive deep into: The making of WROC His practice philosophy and how he stays inspired Life in Mr. Big and Racer X Paul's not just a shred legend — he's one of the most positive, dedicated lifers in rock 'n' roll. In 1980 I started hitting the San Francisco Bay Area rock clubs nightly. The Stone , Old Waldorf , Mabuhay Gardens, Uncle Charlie's, The Phoenix Theater , Keystone Berkeley, Cotati Cabaret. I had a huge thirst for Rock n Roll. Of course the big bands like Van Halen ,AC/DC , Judas Priest and Ted Nugent would come through town but that was like once a year so you had to find something more out there and that something was a blossoming local rock scene and the early kings of that scene was a band called Roadrunner. This band absolutely crushed it live and it seemed like over night they were selling out every club in the Bay. By 1985 the band was done. I will Never forget those days and especially my guest today lead singer of Roadrunner James Hume. I learned all of my early rock n roll lessons from this band. I don't think I've talked to James since 1985 so it was an honor to catch up with him and really hear his story. You may not of heard of Roadrunner but I guarantee you will love the stories. From Metallica opening up for them, Dio trying to get them a record deal and the infamous band house "The Cave" Dig in my friends and hear some San Francisco Rock History. Check out some art by James Hume in this link https://www.rebelunicorn.life/james-hume Roadrunner's music can be heard here https://music.apple.com/us/album/teenage-warcry-ep/270227528 Join my Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/DeanDelray Enjoy tons of Bonus episodes. Today I sit down with Todd Mayo owner of one of the coolest concert venues in the world. Years ago a friend sent me a YouTube clip of The Chris Robinson Brotherhood playing at one of the most insane venues I had ever seen. It looked like the band was playing on Mars. I had never seen this venue so I dug in and did some research and found out it was called The Caverns, located in Grundy County Tennessee. This venue was created by my guest Todd Mayo and it quickly became a destination venue. Everyone has played there including Chris Stapleton, Lucinda Williams, Billy Strings and more. There are a handful of absolute magical venues in the world, Red Rocks, The Gorge, Hollywood Bowl, The Sphere and now The Caverns. Todd Sits down with me for an In-Depth conversation on exactly how this place came to be. Not only has Todd created one of the coolest venues in the world he also created an Emmy Award winning TV show on PBS called The Cavern Sessions. Todd has a book coming out in Sept called Caveman Chronicles that I can honestly say is a must read. Also a very special Announcement is at the front of this episode so do not skip the intro. Today I sit down with legendary drummer Chris Slade. Chris started out his professional career at 16 years old playing drums for Tom Jones. From there he became a founding member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band recording 8 studio albums from 1972 to 1978. After a 1 year tour with the great David Gilmour another legend Jimmy Page called him to join the super group The Firm. Most people really know Chris from his time in AC/DC recording and touring on the smash hit record The Razors Edge. That record was loaded with hits including Thunderstuck, Moneytalks and Are You Ready. After the return of Phil Rudd, Chris moved on and played in his own group until 2015 when he was asked to return to AC/DC after Phil Rudd had legal problems. 8 years in the making my guest Director, Peter Dowd follows a man around that is absolutely obsessed with Jimmy Page. The first time Akio Sakurai hears Led Zeppelin as a teenager, and then laid eyes on the band in The Song Remains the Same, the group's 1976 concert documentary, Sakurai has had one mission in life: to demonstrate his adoration of Zeppelin founder Jimmy Page. He is completely candid about this: "I want to be Jimmy Page," he remembers thinking. The film is an amazing Document of what it's like to dive way down a rabbit hole. Passion is in full effect here. Thank you DDR Kingston-upon-Hull's The Black Delta Movement return with their stunning new album 'Recovery Effects' – 8 tracks of immersive, groove-heavy psychedelic rock released April 14th 2023 on Fuzz Club Records. Determination and a commitment to musical development are writ large across Matt Burr's personal and artistic journey as the main creative force behind The Black Delta Movement. His most collaborative work yet, 'Recovery Effects' sees Matt recruiting highly lauded UK guitar-slinger and Little Barrie frontman Barrie Cadogan and bandmates Lewis Wharton (Bass) and Tony Coote (Drums) to provide musical backing on the album. With legendary producer, The Heliocentrics' co-founder and drummer extraordinaire Malcolm Catto also helming production duties. "The album's a love letter to the band and all the emotions that come with it," explains Matt when talking about the period of adversity that led to its creation. Finding himself without his former bandmates following the release of their highly-praised 2018 debut 'Preservation' and that record's subsequent live shows, the pandemic-induced lockdown periods throughout '20 and '21 initially gave time for reflection before proving to be a time of productivity. Giving Matt the breathing space to fine-tune the new songs alongside Cadogan before hitting the ground running when entering the studio in late 2021 – the band cutting the basic tracks live and Malcolm Catto providing invaluable input when it came to moulding the music you hear contained throughout The results of this creative melting pot of such talented and seasoned musicians see The Black Delta Movement delivering that ring thing: a layered, honest and deeply entertaining rock'n'roll record. There are a myriad of moods and textures, whether on the garage-blues grooves of opener and first single 'Fourth Pass Over The Graveyard', follow-up single 'Zip-Tie' which explodes from its moody intro into punk-rock motorik, or the psychedelic slow-burn of 'Hiding In The Tall Grass' which manages to channel the likes of The Doors and Spacemen 3 over its 9 hypnotic minutes.
