Introducing Helen Mirren Is In Her Villain Era from The Run-Through with Vogue. Follow the show: The Run-Through with Vogue Dame Helen Mirren, an actress with a storied career, has at long last entered her villain era. “I think it has to do with getting older,” she told Chloe and Taylor Antrim on today’s episode, “when you’re older, if you’re a woman, you have to be an awful, ghastly person.” Her latest “villain” opportunity comes in the form of playing writer Patricia Highsmith in A Talent For Murder, the latest film from director Anton Corbijn. The fictional film, based on a play, captures the final chapter of Highsmith’s life in which she was a devoted alcoholic and held many problematic views. She had become a recluse, living in a brutalist home in Tegna, Switzerland with her pet snails and drinking heavily. In this story, she is approached by a young, handsome New York publisher (played by Alden Ehrenreich) who has the impossible task of convincing her to write another book in her Ripley series. Mirren was first introduced to Highsmith through her husband Taylor Hackford and became a fan of her books as well as the many film adaptations. For her own transformation into Highsmith, the costuming was of immense importance. Highsmith wore notably masculine clothing and had a short neck and a hunched posture, especially later in her life. “so I got the costume people to build the shoulder pads up,” she explained, “and it gives her that sort of look that she’s about to pounce.” There was also the rage associated with her alcoholism: “she must have been terrifying in those days,” Mirren mused. When Mirren started her career, the roles were much less nuanced for women. “They really sucked,” she lamented, “and they’re so much better now.” If she were to give advice to that past self who was demoralized by the parts she was getting, she would tell her to be as rude as you possibly can! They also spoke about some of her recent iconic red carpet looks, the signature “stripper” heels she purchased on Hollywood Boulevard, and making her own clothes. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. They move to Ty Simpson having a great debut for the Rams in his first preseason game and Colin argues that young quarterbacks ending up with head coach like Sean McVay is like hitting the lottery, and that the Rams weren’t crazy to spend a first round pick on a quarterback while Matt Stafford is still the starter (8:00). They pivot to the 49ers and the highlight trend of Christian McCaffrey getting injured the year after leading the league in touches… which he did last season (16:30). On this episode of 3 & Out, John is back from the road, coming to you live from a Marriott couch and he starts by giving Jerry Jones credit, which he acknowledges is not a sentence people are used to hearing. With the Cowboys extending Quinnen Williams (00:56), John walks through the full accounting of the Micah Parsons trade: Dallas wasn't one player away, they were three or four guys away, and once Dak and CeeDee were paid, signing Parsons would have made them a four-man team on a 53-man roster. Add up Williams' guarantees plus the two rookies they drafted with the return — Caleb Downs and Malachai Lawrence — and it lands within a rounding error of Parsons' own deal. Then he gets to Jeff Hafley and the Miami Dolphins tackling to the ground in camp (07:45), which in 2026 is about as jarring as seeing a guy light a cigarette. Miami can't manufacture a December trip to Buffalo in 84-degree sunshine, so the only lever a staff has is mandated physicality — and John connects it to his own father drawing a line in the sand and putting him on a Sacramento-area ranch every summer from ninth grade on. He also finds the one sliver of optimism in losing a top-ten left tackle (16:07): at least it happened in August, when you still have a month to canvass the league. Then the Bills' new stadium backlash (19:00) and why internet comment sections are a separate reality from the real world, and Dad Diaries (22:19) — a Friday night of tequila in Newport Beach that coincided, unfortunately, with the worst night of sleep his wife has ever had. Then it's a full mailbag (27:34). Was the Cousins–Crosby fallout actually coordinated between the players and Klint Kubiak (27:34)? Could Anthony Richardson be a reclamation project in Baltimore — and how did the Colts let his trade value hit zero (30:22)? Should recovery peptides be legal in the NFL, and where's the line between recovery and steroids (33:32)? Bill Barnwell's all-decade team and why John thinks it's Mahomes over Josh Allen, plus why building an all-decade team halfway through the decade is a fool's errand (35:47). A high school sports administrator asks about transfer and eligibility rules, which sends John into holding eighth graders back for athletics and the Danny Almonte energy creeping into youth sports (40:47). Whether Odell Beckham Jr. can stick on a roster without playing special teams (46:11), a defense of Saquon Barkley's hands (47:59), the Chiefs' wide receiver room and whether a training camp trade is coming (49:10), his actual gambling philosophy and the two parlays that keep him coming back (52:10), and finally Ja'Lynn Polk retiring two years after going 37th overall — and why the Patriots' draft record at receiver is a reminder that you're evaluating humans, not widgets (56:44). On this episode of 3 & Out, John is pumped with football officially back. He opens on Carson Beck's Hall of Fame Game debut (01:46) and why a third-round quarterback's path is fundamentally different from a first-rounder's: you're not a five-star on scholarship, you're a backup until proven otherwise, and your preseason tape is your résumé.He likes the landing spot for Beck and explains why guys like Chase Daniel built 14-year careers almost entirely on August film. From there, he breaks down the 2026 Hall of Fame class (11:09) — Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Adam Vinatieri which John argues may be the highest-character group Canton has ever enshrined at once, plus a sober note on Roger Craig's dementia diagnosis and the taped acceptance. Teddy Bridgewater's retirement (16:34) becomes John's case against the Lions, the one thing he thinks Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have done poorly while otherwise resurrecting the franchise. Investing everything in Jared Goff without ever churning cheap arms behind him is a portfolio with no diversification — and he contrasts it with the Packers' Ron Wolf philosophy and the Eagles taking a Day 3 quarterback nearly every single year. He gets into the Colts hyping Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard apparently beating out Anthony Richardson (24:53), why training camp praise from famous teammates should be discounted (27:54) with a detour into why Saban and Belichick were at their best after losses and the Cowboys (31:04), where he's bullish on the roster but not on Brian Schottenheimer's Super Bowl talk. Predictions on the Saints, Cowboys and Texans (34:31), Kyle Shanahan's concussion protocol and a rant about cross-country preseason travel (35:14), and the injury board (36:19). He closes with the Kirk Cousins–Maxx Crosby scuffle and why Klint Kubiak handled it perfectly (41:16), the compounding advantage of growing up in a football family (42:35), and a Newport Beach staycation that turned into a $60 million ocean-view real estate rant (44:11). Colin is joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down the NFL Draft. They discuss the backlash to the Bears taking speedster Zayvian Johnson and Colin explains that if any coach picked him, it may not be a great pick…but with Ben Johnson as coach it can work (9:00). They move to the Rams & Colin argues that while their draft won’t grade well… outside of Ty Simpson, the Rams are drafting for the near term while they still have Matt Stafford and John believes Simpson wasn’t talented enough to justify the 13th pick (15:00). Colin believes the Raiders crushed the draft and Fernando Mendoza could change the trajectory of the franchise (25:00), and they discuss the impact of NIL creating less seasoned, older prospects with multiple years of high-end college football experience in the later rounds (28:30). They break down the Chiefs draft and why it made total sense for them to draft 3 defensive players with their three Top 40 picks (31:30), and Colin lauds the Cowboys for focusing on improving their defense as well by getting the steal of the draft in Caleb Downs (37:00). Colin is joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down the NFL Draft. They start with the Rams drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at pick #13 and why it was shocking for them to pick him so high after a limited sample size in college, but Colin argues if anyone can turn Simpson into a great quarterback…it’s Sean McVay (3:00). Colin heaps praise on the Cowboys for drafting Caleb Downs and highlights the massive upgrades Dallas has made to their defense rather than paying Micah Parsons (10:30). They agree that the Bucs got great value in taking Reuben Bain at #15 after experts projected him as a top 10 pick (13:45). They discuss the Chiefs moving up to #6 to take cornerback Mansoor Delane and both agree they had no issues with the trade up to get a much cheaper replacement for Trent McDuffie (15:00). Colin argues that both New York teams did well with their combined 4 first round picks and doesn’t see any busts in the group (23:00). They react to the Titans taking Ohio State WR Carnell Tate at #4, and John believes Tate was a massive reach and that Tate doesn’t have the elite upside that would justify such a high pick (26:00). They both believe that Kadyn Proctor is the most likely Top 15 pick to bust based on reports about his lack of work ethic (29:15). Colin predicts accurately that the Eagles would take USC wide receiver Makai Lemon after trading up, and says that it's the perfect move to patch the hole that will be left after the team trades AJ Brown (33:00). They discuss the overall quality of this first round draft class, note that it’s been very offensive line heavy and explain why you can’t go wrong drafting o-line in the first round (39:00). Colin’s joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to react to the Seahawks dominating win over the Patriots in the Super Bowl. They start with Seattle’s dominating defense pressuring Drake Maye all night and the Patriots offensive line being overwhelmed (2:45) . Colin highlights the arc of Sam Darnold’s career and that with the right coaching he was an effective game manager that didn’t make a big mistake in the biggest moment (5:15). They point to New England’s defense getting tired in the second half due to their offense being unable to stay on the field and the dam finally breaking… but Colin argues that New England is still in a “rebuild” stage despite being in the Super BowL (9:30). They evaluate a Seahawks roster that doesn’t have an apparent “need” and debate what pieces they should look to add to their Super Bowl winning roster (14:15), and Colin argues there haven’t been many better stories in NFL history than Sam Darnold (23:15). Colin says Drake Maye has nothing to hang his head about and lost to one of the best teams in the last decade… but that Drake wasn’t ready for this moment (31:30). They look ahead to the 2026 season and predict which teams will be back in postseason contention & who won’t, and they agree the Seahawks GM John Schneider has locked up his case for the Hall of Fame (37:45). Finally, Colin believes the ups and downs of Sam Darnold’s career will lead him to continue taking team friendly deals in a favorable situation (53:00), and they agree the Seahawks sale price just went up by a billion dollars (1:00:30). John Middlekauff kicks off by reacting to the news that the Los Angeles Rams have extended head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead and speculates on the Rams’ future as it pertains to the QB position if Matt Stafford retires this offseason. John wraps up with an interview with the San Francisco 49ers CEO Al Guido about his new promotion from president, the business of managing an NFL stadium in-season and in the offseason, the importance of relationships with the head coach and general manager, the role principal owner Jed York plays in the overall process, and advice for young people trying to break into sports. Colin’s joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down the top NFL headlines. They start with Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah being fired and point to animosity behind the scenes in Minnesota with the coaches and some bad draft choices…especially JJ McCarthy as the reasons why (3:30). Colin argues that while the organization has supported McCarthy publicly, behind the scenes there’s a serious lack of confidence in him (9:30) and Kwesi took too much time away during training camp in a business where grinding is paramount (14:00). They discuss which of the new coaching hires will be viewed as a success in 5 years: Colin points to Raiders new head coach Klint Kubiak as a hit and John agrees and argues that if needed, the Raiders could trade Maxx Crosby for a haul that could help reset the franchise (22:30). Colin tries to identify other quarterbacks that were labeled “busts”, then end up ascending to a convincing top 7-8 quarterback in the league and they debate where to rank Darnold in the QB hierarchy if he wins a Super Bowl (28:30). Colin argues that football has changed, and that having a quarterback with “horsepower” is worth putting up with more mistakes and interceptions (35:00). Finally, John points out the $10 billion dollar sale price of the Lakers and they discuss why the floated 6-8 billion dollar estimated price for the Seahawks seems way too low for a team in the Super Bowl and set up for long term success (45:00).
