What if 16 words could unlock everything — who you are, why you're happy (or not), and what you should actually be doing with your life? In this episode, Suzy Welch introduces the language of values: the 16 words at the heart of the Welch-Bristol Values Inventory, developed through her doctoral research at the University of Bristol and taught at NYU's Stern School of Business. To bring each of the 16 values to life, Suzy does something she has never done publicly before — she reveals her own values, ranked from 1 to 16. This episode covers her bottom five peripheral values, a set that turns out to be statistically unusual. This is Part I of a three-part series. By the end, you'll not only know Suzy in a whole new way, but you’ll be fluent in a language that just might help you write the entire book of your life. At some point in the journey of becoming…you, questions are inevitable. Questions about who you are, how you got here, and what it really takes to build a life that feels authentic. You've done the work. You've taken the tests. You've started asking the hard questions about who you are and what you actually want. And now you're left with a whole new set of questions. In this FAQ episode, your host Suzy Welch answers everything you’ve been wondering. Why do some people feel more lost after a self-discovery breakthrough than before? What's the hidden score that reveals the gap between the life you're living and the life you actually want — and what does it mean when that gap is huge? When does a passion become a calling, and when is it just a really good hobby? And what do you do when you can see exactly where you're supposed to be going — but getting there feels like too much? Suzy answers all of it with real stories, zero sugarcoating, and the kind of clarity that makes you want to take notes. Because figuring out who you are is only the beginning. The interesting part is what comes next. Take the Becoming You Three-Day Intensive course this May on NYU’s campus, here. Whether you're brand new to this podcast or have been here from the beginning, this episode is your official welcome—or welcome back—to Becoming You. In this episode, Suzy revisits the origins of a methodology that has quietly changed the way tens of thousands of people think about their lives and careers. She does it the only way that felt right: with everyone's favorite parlor game. Two truths, one lie, and the real story behind how Becoming You came to exist—and why it works when so much else hasn't. Fair warning: at least one thing you currently believe about self-discovery is wrong. Probably a big one. And Suzy has been waiting for exactly this moment to tell you which one—because it's the lie so widespread, so well-intentioned, and so genuinely unhelpful that it may explain why previous attempts didn't stick. You'll walk away understanding two foundational truths behind the acclaimed Becoming You methodology—and one myth that may have been quietly running your life. If you've ever wondered: Is it too late to find my purpose? Can I change direction now? What does this work actually require of me? This podcast is for you, and that's the whole truth and nothing but. Take the Becoming You Three-Day Intensive course this May on NYU’s campus, here. Fear of change is powerful. But the deepest fear of all may be this: the fear of stepping into a life that is fully our own. In the final episode of the three-part Be Not Afraid series, your host Suzy Welch shares a deeply personal story about loss, identity, and the moment when fear gives way to decision. The episode revisits one of the podcast’s most intimate stories — one that longtime listeners will remember well — about a solitary swan who appeared at Suzy’s home, shortly after the death of her husband. The two formed an unusual bond, each navigating life alone after years of partnership. Then one day, the swan disappeared. Her departure became a powerful metaphor for something many people face but rarely name: the moment when the life we knew is gone, and the future depends on choices we are not yet sure we’re ready to make. Drawing on her own experience of grief and reinvention, Suzy explores the quiet but critical turning point that follows self-discovery — the decision to act. Because growth does not happen by accident. Reinvention does not happen by accident. Becoming does not happen by accident. It happens when we decide. This episode concludes the Be Not Afraid series with a simple but challenging question: Are you waiting for life to change… or are you ready to begin again? Missed the Suzy the Swan story? Fear of the unknown gets plenty of attention. But an even deeper fear lurks beneath it: the fear of what might happen if we truly understood ourselves. In Part II of the Be Not Afraid series, your host Suzy Welch explores why self-knowledge can feel so threatening — and why so many people instinctively avoid it. The episode begins with a revealing experiment: Suzy once asked her colleagues to anonymously write down the first word that came to mind when they saw her name appear on their phones. Most responses were predictable. One was not. The word was “machine.” That moment opens a larger conversation about values — how difficult they are to see clearly, and why powerful forces constantly distort them. Suzy explains the four dynamics she calls the Four Horsemen of Values Destruction: Expectations, Expedience, Events, and Economic security. Along the way, she responds to a listener who admits she’s afraid to take The Values Bridge assessment for one simple reason: she worries the results might reveal that her life is far from aligned with what matters most. The fear is understandable. But the data tells an interesting story: almost no one is perfectly aligned with their values — and yet understanding that gap can be the beginning of real freedom. Because the truth about ourselves can be uncomfortable. But avoiding it comes at a far greater cost. And sometimes, the moment we finally face it brings something we’ve longed for: relief. Fear of the unknown gets a lot of attention. But the deeper fear — the one that quietly shapes our careers and lives — is something else entirely. The fear of knowing ourselves. In this first episode of a three-part series on fear and self-discovery, your host Suzy Welch explores why so many people avoid looking closely at who they really are — and what they truly want. Drawing inspiration from the iconic film “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” Suzy examines the psychological reality behind what researchers call information avoidance: our tendency to avoid truths that might force us to change. She tackles a question from podcast listener Katie, who took a brave step after decades of professional success: a sabbatical to reassess her life and career. Now she faces a dilemma many people share — should she admit that she took a sabbatical on her resume, or hide it from potential employers? This episode kicks off a three-part “Be Not Afraid” series on the courage it takes to change your life from the inside out. Because the truth is simple: If you don’t stop to ask who you are… life will eventually force the question. And the sooner you ask it, the better. What if the real risk isn’t oversharing…but undersharing? We spend so much energy worrying about saying too much – about TMI, about revealing something we might later regret. But in the process, many of us end up living with more unsaid than said, and with more authentic moments missed than taken. On this counterintuitive (and hilarious) episode of Becoming You, host Suzy Welch speaks with Harvard professor Leslie John about the underrated power of oversharing and her new book “Revealing.” The conversation explores what the Becoming You methodology calls an authenticity gap in the value of Voice – the distance between how much we value self-expression and how much we actually practice it. When should you reveal more of your inner world? How can revealing more build trust, deepen connection, and help you live more authentically? And what is the true cost of silence? Oversharing isn’t the enemy. Neither is restraint. The real skill is learning how to reveal in a way that serves both you and the people around you. This conversation is about Voice, about closing the gap between what you value and how you live, and about practicing self-expression as a learnable skill. And yes, you’ll hear a few oversharing stories that may make you rethink exactly where the line is. You’ve heard it a thousand times: What’s your why? Your purpose, your North Star, where your best life is hiding. But what if the “why” question isn’t the one that actually gets you unstuck? In this special episode, your host Suzy Welch hears from the global community of certified Becoming You coaches about the questions they use to jumpstart purpose-seeking clients. Their answers are nothing short of revelatory. Suzy introduces three of the most powerful questions, designed to unlock forward motion when you’re feeling stuck, stalled, or secretly longing for something more. And yes, one of the questions may or may not be about dogs – but not in the way you’d think. This is not a fluffy “find your passion” conversation. It’s a practical, sometimes uncomfortable excavation of what’s really stopping you — and what might finally set you free. If you’ve been circling the question of purpose but not making progress, this episode offers three new entry points. Forget your why. Start here. If you’ve read even one headline about careers lately – who hasn’t – you may be feeling a familiar cocktail of emotions: fear, dread… and total confusion. Mass layoffs. AI everywhere. Ageism creeping younger and younger. Trade jobs suddenly looking more secure than white-collar work. Remote work still the most controversial topic in modern professional life. You might be left wondering, “What the heck is happening with careers right now?” In this special installment of Career Confidential, your host Suzy Welch is joined by co-host Dustin Liu, Associate Director of NYU Stern’s Initiative on Purpose and Flourishing, to break down five of the biggest career headlines shaping the world of work right now, including: Are mass layoffs truly about AI? Do professionals have to turn to “resume Botox” to appear younger? Is AI a net destroyer of jobs… or the creator of entirely new careers? What does it mean when trade workers are surpassing college grads in job security? Why is remote work still the defining workplace battleground? This is an episode for anyone trying to make sense of today’s career chaos, and trying to build a life of purpose and stability inside it. What if the thing you’ve been told your whole life, that you work too much, that you don’t relax enough, that you should “just enjoy yourself” isn’t something you need to “fix”…but a value? In the third and final episode of this travel series, your host Suzy Welch takes us to Paris. Not for romance, not for nostalgia, not even for the croissants (though, obviously, yes). She goes for something much deeper: clarity. This is the concluding chapter in a three-part exploration of how travel can wake us up – not to new landscapes – but to new eyes. To the truth of who we are underneath the stories we tell ourselves. In Part One, Suzy stood at the Taj Mahal and reckoned with Belovedness, the value of romantic love. In Part Two, she returned to Sicily and uncovered a family history that reshaped her understanding of Scope – the hunger for a big, expansive life. And now, in Part Three, we arrive in Paris in the summer, at a moment that is both outwardly relaxing and inwardly seismic. Suzy finds herself on the Île de la Cité, standing before the newly restored Notre Dame, and confronted by a surprising realization about two values that rarely coexist peacefully: Eudemonia…and Workcentrism. This is an episode about: What it means to honor your values without apology Why purpose is not one-size-fits-all What happens when you stopping judging yourself – and others – for the ways we choose to organize a life The goal isn’t to live someone else’s version of happiness, it’s to live in alignment with your own. What if the stories you inherited about where you come from were all a lie? In part two of a three-episode Becoming You series about the places you travel and the self-discoveries that arise, your host Suzy Welch voyages to Sicily. Not for sun-drenched escapism or waterfront glamour (hello White Lotus), but to confront the whispered mythology that shaped her childhood and, without her knowing it, her values. This is an episode about ancestry, silence, and the stories families tell to survive. Suzy takes us to Caltanissetta, her family’s ancestral village in the center of Sicily, where a long-told narrative of nobility and elegance collides with historical truth, about the kind of suffering that forces people to choose between staying—or running for their lives. What unfolds is not just a revelation about where her family came from, but a profound insight into a core value she would later name Scope: the desire (or lack thereof) for risk, stimulation, and a big, expansive life. This episode explores: How generational trauma gets buried under idealized fictions The difference between grief and gratitude when facing your family’s past How values like Scope shape whether we run toward calm and security vs chaos and excitement With vulnerability, honesty, and unexpected joy, Suzy reflects on her ancestors’ courage, and their decision to leave everything behind, cross an ocean, and choose uncertainty over suffering. And she asks the question at the heart of this series: What do the places you’ve been reveal about who you are? Next week, the journey continues—in Paris—where a completely different truth waits to be discovered. Because sometimes, you have to travel all the way across the world to meet yourself. What if the places you travel don’t take you far away… but bring you closer to who you actually are? In this deeply personal and openly vulnerable episode of Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch launches a rare three-part storytelling series about travel—not as escape or travelogue, but as excavation. On this first trip, you will land in Agra, India, at the foot of the Taj Mahal. What unfolds there is not a story about architecture or history, but a reckoning: about love, power, identity, and the value Suzy would later name Belovedness (long before she had the language for it). Through the lens of her marriage, the complicated legend of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, and the quiet ache of self-betrayal that can come from living misaligned with your deepest values, Suzy shares the kind of insight that only comes from a trip to the other side of the world. Along the way, you’ll hear about: How travel can surface buried truths about your values Why love stories are always more complicated than they appear The difference between loving someone and organizing your life around them What it means to “miss yourself” inside a life that looks beautiful from the outside How self-knowledge can arrive long before you have the words for it Sometimes, you have to go very far away to finally see yourself. Be sure to tune in next week, as we journey to Italy for a story that is at once identity-shattering and deeply clarifying. And we want to know, where have you traveled and found yourself? Ordinarily, Becoming You is a podcast about the information we have to excavate, the decisions we need to make, and the actions we have to take, in order to live by design, not default. This week, in an unusually intimate episode, our host Suzy Welch talks about the words you need to say, three to be exact, to the same end. The only hitch is, you need to say them before it’s too late. Suzy almost missed that chance with her lifelong best friend, Sue Jacobson, this week’s special guest, in an episode that brings us inside a hospital room awash with despair, and plumbs just what it means to demonstrate the very hard, very necessary act of mattering. Yes, mattering. It sounds simple. It feels obvious. And yet, as this episode explores, most of us are getting it wrong. Drawing on the research of Professor Zach Mercurio, and decades of real-life friendship, work, loss, and resilience, Suzy breaks mattering down into three teachable practices: Noticing, affirming, and needing. These aren’t platitudes. They’re behaviors. And when done right, their impact is profound. You’ll hear live demonstrations with Suzy and Sue, honest missteps, and one extraordinary story that reveals why telling people “you matter” isn’t enough. Along the way, Suzy and Sue admit to friendship ruptures, leadership lessons, near-loss, and why vulnerability is the most underused advantage in work and life. If you want to be a better boss, partner, friend – or simply a more impactful human – this episode will give you tools you can use today. Fair warning: it may also make you cry. Before you're fired, you're a ghost. You just don't know it yet. Suzy Welch calls this phenomenon "dead man walking"—that strange purgatory when your boss has mentally let you go but hasn't said the words yet. You're still showing up, still sending emails, still thinking you have a job. But something has already ended. In this special "Career Confidential" episode of Becoming You, Suzy and her NYU Stern colleague Dustin Liu pull back the curtain on the part of getting fired no one talks about: what's happening on the other side of the desk. The guilt. The anger. The calculus about when to do it. The weird emotional roller coaster your boss rides before ending your career. But this isn't just the boss's story. Suzy and Dustin dig into what it feels like to be on the other side—the shock, the shame, the strange grief of a professional death. Suzy has been fired three times herself. Once by Harvard Business Review. Once by a consulting firm. And once—in a story she tells here in full—by her own husband. Dustin watched three friends get let go within ninety minutes of each other. They've seen the drama of career collapse from every angle. This is a podcast of specifics. The five signs you're about to be fired aren't vague hunches—they're patterns, and Suzy walks through each one with the kind of bluntness that might make you uncomfortable. The meeting invites that dry up. The feedback that stops. The subtle shifts in how people talk to you. By the time you notice, you may already be halfway out the door. But here's what most career advice won't tell you: sometimes you can climb back. Not always, but sometimes. Suzy breaks down exactly what that looks like—the conversations you need to have, the moves that can reverse your trajectory, and why most people won't do them. It requires honesty most of us would rather avoid. This isn't a pep talk. It's your boss's diary—and possibly your last chance to rewrite the ending. Every year, we make New Year’s resolutions. And every year…we break them. But why? In this episode of Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch takes on one of the most universal – and quietly painful – rituals of the calendar year, and explains why New Year’s resolutions almost never work…unless you understand what’s really driving them. In the Becoming You methodology, that’s called the Authenticity Gap: the distance between the values you hold and how much you’re actually living them. That ache you feel, the sense that you’re “fine, but not quite fine,” that’s where New Year’s resolutions come from. A values disconnect. Drawing on exclusive data from Becoming You’s Values Bridge digital assessment, Suzy breaks down why the average person is walking around with a 27% authenticity gap (and what that number means), which values tend to cause the biggest riffs for people, and why your resolutions might be making your Authenticity Gap worse. Along the way, Suzy shares deeply personal stories, from a family resolution tradition that still hurts to remember, to a hairdresser’s very honest shopping confession. Plus, Suzy explores what it really means to live an A-plus life in a world that often pulls us away from ourselves. And yes…finally…Suzy explains her lifelong crush on Pitbull. If you’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution that didn’t stick, this episode will give you a completely new way to make your goals for the year ahead. So stick with Suzy for 30 minutes. This one might actually change your year. The Values Bridge digital assessment is available at thevaluesbridge.comPIE360 Feedback tool is available at pie360feedback.comWant more Becoming You? Career success, life success – you want them, but here’s the thing, they will remain ever elusive until you know your aptitudes. Don’t bolt! We know that word sounds like jargon. Or like pure academic BS. But aptitudes are real, and you have very specific ones, and knowing what they are can and will change your life. Christmas is supposed to be joyful. Magical. Simple. So why does Becoming You host Suzy Welch feel so…troubled…by Santa Claus? This week on the podcast, Becoming You is celebrating Christmas with a conversation about one of the most misunderstood of the 16 values in Becoming You’s Values Bridge system: Cosmos. Cosmos represents religion or spirituality—not any specific religion, but the degree to which faith shapes how someone experiences the world. And here’s what the data tells us: Cosmos is the most polarized value there is. You either have it…or you don’t. Suzy does. In this episode, she explores what it’s like to live as a high-Cosmos person in a largely Santa-forward, faith-agnostic culture—especially at Christmas. Why suppressing your #1 value can be exhausting. Why faith can feel disconcerting to people who don’t share it. And why understanding this value—whether it’s yours or not—may be one of the most important acts of respect we can offer each other. Along the way, Suzy shares her own unexpected faith story, why she almost left Cosmos out of the Values Bridge entirely, and what Christmas means to her. This is not a sermon. It’s not an argument. And it’s definitely not a typical holiday episode. It’s an invitation: to understand a value you may not share, to see the people who hold it more clearly, and to consider whether the greatest gift this season might be learning how to honor each other’s differences—with compassion, curiosity, and a little grace. In this special episode of Becoming You, your host Suzy Welch does something few mothers-in-law would dare to do: she cold-calls her daughters-in-law and asks that question – Am I a good mother in law? Suzy is joined by clinical psychologist and relationship expert Dr. Tracy Dalgleish, author of You, Your Husband & His Mother, for an honest, deeply human conversation about values and family. Together, they ask: What does a good mother-in-law really look like? Why do the holidays so often expose unspoken power dynamics and values conflicts? And how does insecurity – especially in family systems – cause us to lose curiosity, shut down, and stop asking the questions that actually build connection? Dr. Tracy explains why staying curious about a daughter-in-law (or any new family member) is one of the most important – and hardest – skills to develop, and how inquiry can replace control without sacrificing your values. They also explore whether couples can thrive with differing values and why sometimes the healthiest move isn’t pulling harder on either side, but dropping the rope entirely and accepting that not everyone in your family will see the world the way you do. Suzy shares a moving story about her son and daughter-in-law – a seemingly simple moment – that reveals what it really means to face family pressure together. This episode is for anyone navigating in-laws, holidays, or family tension, and wondering how to stay true to themselves without losing the relationship. What makes a relationship truly work? Is it chemistry, shared interests, or something deeper – something that holds when life gets complicated? In this special installment of Becoming Us, where host Suzy Welch applies the Becoming You values methodology to couples, Suzy sits down with media and reality TV personality Sam Feher and her boyfriend William Hayden, co-founder of the startup Bags. Together, they explore how aligned values create the real foundation for a strong, lasting partnership. Using the proven, data-driven Becoming You values framework, Suzy helps Sam and William illuminate exactly where their values naturally align and where meaningful gaps appear. They dig into one of their biggest value contrasts: Cosmos, the value of faith, which sits at the very bottom of Sam’s list but in William’s top tier. They discuss navigating conversations about religion and spirituality with respect instead of friction. And they unpack the reverse dynamic with Belonging – a core value for Sam, but one of William’s lowest – complete with a hilarious story about a competitive game night that revealed exactly what Belonging looks like in action for them as a couple. Throughout the conversation, Suzy shows how understanding these contrasts through The Values Bridge can turn potential conflicts into opportunities for connection. And she also reveals the “green flag” of all green flags: the one value Sam and William rank nearly identically – and how that shared priority quietly strengthens their relationship every single day. This episode is a masterclass in how clarity about your own values – and your partner’s – can turn “me” and “you” into a thriving, unstoppable “us.” Find Sam on Instagram and CAPS LOCK podcast Find William's company, Bags The Values Bridge digital assessment is available at thevaluesbridge.comPIE360 Feedback tool is available at pie360feedback.comWant more Becoming You? Only 11% of Americans rank family as their #1 value. That's not a guess. It's data from nearly 100,000 respondents of The Values Bridge—the largest values data set ever compiled. On this episode of Becoming You, host Suzy Welch breaks down the research from Becoming You Labs behind her widely discussed Wall Street Journal op-ed, "For Americans, Family Comes First—Or Does It?" And she's brought in the perfect person to help make sense of it: renowned family therapist Vienna Pharaon. What The Values Bridge reveals about family challenges nearly everything we've been told about what matters most—and raises profound questions about how we're actually living our lives. That's why this conversation feels so personal—and important. Suzy and Vienna explore: Why our childhood experiences and the messages we absorbed growing up shape our values more than we realize. The values that consistently outrank family, like self-care and flourishing. How to honor your real values and design a life around them—without the guilt that comes from not living up to others' expectations. This conversation isn't about whether you love your family. It's about understanding what genuinely drives your choices, your energy, and how you spend your days. If you've ever felt guilty for not wanting to go home for the holidays, or wondered why you don't feel about family the way you think you should—you're not alone. And this conversation will help you understand why. Happy Thanksgiving, Becoming You community. This podcast exists to help you think deeply about your purpose—and today, our host Suzy Welch is doing exactly that in one of her most reflective episodes yet. Before turning to the four things she's happily thankful for right here and now, Suzy examines three significant mistakes she's only grown grateful for over time. A highly specialized (and utterly impractical) college major. Her painful first marriage. A spectacular termination. Three consequential missteps—and the wisdom each eventually revealed may not be what you'd anticipate. This is an unusually candid conversation. The path to purpose, it turns out, isn't always paved with achievements. Sometimes it's forged through the decisions we initially wish we could undo. This Thanksgiving, we're sitting with the paradox of gratitude—for the detours that redirected us, the lessons that only time could teach, and the unexpected places where meaning takes root. Happy Thanksgiving. Let's keep becoming us, together. It's time once again for a mailbag episode of Becoming You, in which host Suzy Welch tackles three "I feel stuck" moments that couldn't be more different—except they all demand the kind of honesty that stings a little before it sets you free. First up: a stay-at-home mom who adores her kids but has completely lost herself in the process. Suzy unpacks the deep, painful ironies of motherhood and what it really means to reclaim your identity without guilt. Next: a listener who wants permission to quit a job after just two months, citing her "values." With compassion—but also clarity—Suzy draws a crucial distinction between values and virtues, and gently pushes back on what's really happening here: breaking a contract, letting down a friend, and maybe engineering a little vacation time. "This is not about values," Suzy says. "This is about right and wrong." It's tough love, delivered with heart. Finally: a 73-year-old listener asks whether Becoming You even applies in retirement. Suzy's answer? An emphatic yes. The clock isn't ticking backward, and purpose doesn't come with an expiration date. In fact, "third halfers" might be the most ideal Becoming You audience of all. Plus, a final lightning-round question about Suzy's workplace pet peeves. Warning: a pun may be involved. Tune in to find out—and while you're at it, hear a few messages that may strike home, and heart. Yes, they’re painful. But so is being unemployed. First of all, surprise, this is a podcast that is, at its core, about ageism, a real and painful dynamic faced by way too many people in today’s hyper-fierce workforce. But in the course of coming up with solutions for fighting ageism, our host Suzy Welch realized her advice was something that applied to everyone. Because the five questions she wants you to ask yourself – and answer with brutal candor – are all about relevance, the greatest single competitive advantage you can take with you to an interview. Each week, Becoming You endeavors to help listeners discover their purpose, at home, in life, in love, with careers. Today’s work-focused episode is possibly more intense than usual. OK, not possibly. It is. The questions it urges you to ask, and the tough-love commentary Suzy provides about them, may make you cringe. But as Suzy says, “Getting the job you love can sometimes feel like one big humiliation machine.” We cannot let that scare us off. So take a deep breath, grab something to take notes, and get ready for what could be the most unexpected 30 minutes of job search advice you didn’t know you needed to hear, but did. “You’ll be judged no matter what you do.”“No one is coming to save you.”“Most people secretly want you to fail.” We’ve all heard the so-called hard truths about success—but are they actually true? In this special Career Confidential edition of the Becoming You podcast, host Suzy Welch and her inimitable, sometimes-cohost Dustin Liu—associate director of the Initiative on Purpose and Flourishing—put twenty of life’s toughest “truths” on trial. One by one, they debate whether these cynical mantras are wisdom… or just noise. It’s fast, funny, and fiercely honest—a lightning round of reality checks that might just change how you think about work, ambition, and what it really means to become you. A Becoming You Conversation with the Icons Behind Excuse My Grandma. This week on Becoming You, Suzy Welch welcomes one of social media’s most beloved cross-generational duos: Kim Murstein and her grandmother, Gail Rudnick — the stars behind Excuse My Grandma. Their humorous and heartfelt take on dating, modern life, and generational differences has captured millions of fans, and now they’re bringing that electric dynamic to a values conversation like no other. Suzy invited Kim and Gail to take The Values Bridge, the science-based assessment at the heart of the Becoming You methodology. What follows is a candid, funny, and surprisingly emotional deep-dive into where their values align — and where they couldn’t be further apart. There are moments of honesty, discovery, and plenty of laughter as this duo talks through what truly matters to them. Becoming You is a podcast about purpose — and how understanding our own values, and those of the people we love, can transform our relationships. Each week, Suzy brings warmth, candor, and years of experience helping people align their lives with who they really are. This episode is a reminder that generational clashes don’t have to be battles — with the right language, they can become the bridges that unite us all. A Special “Becoming Us” Episode with Erin and Abe Lichy At its heart, Becoming You asks one big question: What should I do with my life? But sometimes that life is bound up with another’s — a marriage, a family, a partnership that tests where “you” end and “we” begin. In this special “Becoming Us” episode, Real Housewives of New York star Erin Lichy and her husband, Abe, join Suzy Welch for a revealing, funny, and deeply human conversation about love, ambition, and identity. Guided by Suzy and the Values Bridge — the Becoming You method for uncovering what truly matters — the couple discovers how their shared and differing values shape their relationship in ways they hadn’t fully seen before. With Suzy’s signature mix of empathy, insight, and candor, the conversation becomes something rare: an honest exploration of how two people can grow together without losing themselves. By the end, Erin and Abe — and everyone listening — see how understanding your values, and your partner’s, can turn even the hardest conversations into moments of connection and possibility. If Becoming You helps you discover who you are, this episode shows how to stay true to that person inside the partnership that defines your life. It can’t always be about Taylor—but on Becoming You, sometimes it has to be. Especially when she sings, “When I said I don’t believe in marriage, that was a lie.” Because what other lies do we tell about love? And what do they reveal about how we live, decide, and grow? In this week’s episode, host Suzy Welch tackles the ever-complicated terrain of dating, marriage, and divorce with cultural icon Lindsey Metselaar, whose long-running hit podcast We Met at Acme has made her an expert on modern relationships. Together, they dive into questions like: Who wants a romantic relationship more, men or women? Can sex save a marriage? What if he hates your family? And which professions are most—and least—interested in marriage? It’s lively, honest, and sometimes raw. But beneath the laughter and stories runs a deeper question at the heart of Becoming You: How do we make choices about love that actually serve the lives we want to build? Along the way, Suzy shares new data from Becoming You Labs about the state of Belovedness—the value that measures our desire for intimate partnership. The results will likely surprise you. Because the lies we tell about love can be convincing. But the truth about who we are—and what we want—is waiting. Just press play. What would you prefer to hear in life — a soft lie that makes you feel good but leaves you in the dark about something you’d be better off knowing, or straight-up honesty that may sting at first, but ultimately sets you straight? Let’s be real; it’s not even a choice. Everyone wants to know. And yet…so many of us struggle with how to tell the truth. Like, really tell it, no fudging around the edges. We worry about seeming mean. We fear getting yelled at. Or we just don’t have the words we think we need. In this blocking-and-tackling episode of Becoming You, host Suzy Welch has the antidote. It’s the OILS technique, a four-part system which she explains and then demonstrates — twice! — with the help of her daughter, Sophia, one of the podcast’s most popular returning guests. Becoming You is, at its heart, a podcast about discovering who you are and then crafting the journey to your purpose. But that path, Suzy notes, can only happen with truth-telling conversations. This episode takes on the “how” of them with a technique that’s simple, effective, and immediately applicable. You could, in fact, use it today. Tune in to listen, laugh, and learn. Two percent. For job-seekers and hiring managers alike, that’s the number. The line in the sand. All you have to do is decide whether you want to be in it, or not. The consequences for your career, or your company, couldn’t be bigger. On this week’s podcast, your host Suzy Welch dives into the research behind that number, reported in her Wall Street Journal op-ed and gathered at Becoming You Labs. In short: Only 2% of Gen Z hold the three values hiring managers want most: achievement, learning, and the love of work for work’s sake. And yes, the responses to this finding have been…let’s just say, “opinionated.” Suzy reads and responds to some of the most heated comments and explores what all this means for careers, companies, and the tough choices we face when values clash. Tune in to answer the question for yourself, where do you land? And what your answer might mean for your future. Finally, hear Suzy’s very personal reflections about how she is processing the firestorm around her Wall Street Journal piece. Without doubt, there’s been an avalanche of support. But there have been unsparing attacks in equal measure. Spoiler alert, Joan of Arc is invoked. What if you’ve done it? You know, created the life of your dreams – fully living what you want to do, can do, and should do. It all sounds great (because, well, living your purpose tends to be that), but then what? How do you push beyond your dream life? In this special episode of Becoming You, host Suzy Welch sits down with the one and only Kate Bartlett – content creator extraordinaire and now NYU Stern MBA student – to reveal what’s next for her, after having created the life she’s always wanted. This isn’t just a conversation about the future. It’s about pausing to ask: am I living in alignment with my values right now? Nobody hates romantic love, but not everybody loves romantic love the same amount. That’s what makes romantic love a value. Because we get to choose how much of a role it plays in our life. For some of us, it drives all of our actions and decisions, from where we work to where we live to what we do every weekend. For others of us, being in a relationship is a “nice to have” not a “need to have” thing. Our partner matters – if we have one – but they aren’t the center of our existence. Cue the scary music! In this week’s podcast, our host Suzy Welch makes a momentous announcement, and with it, shares news about how we can all learn more about our own, personal level of love as a value. That’s information that matters for us individually as we search for our purpose in life, and it's information that could change how we relate to those around us. So, what’s love got to do with it? Just about everything. Tune in this week for a brand new look at an emotion that never gets old. Much of the time, Becoming You finds itself getting, well, a little existential, because what is existential if not the question, “What should I do with my life?” But eventually, you have to take your answer to that question – or your vague idea of one – and get an actual day job with it. And thus, today’s episode of the pod is about the blocking and tackling of interviewing well. So well, in fact, that you get an offer. Welcome to another installment in our “Career Confidential” series, in which Suzy debates, discusses, and dissects the world of work with her big-hearted, no-BS Becoming You colleague, Dustin Lui, who, even at age 27, is a veteran of the job market, with literally hundreds of interviews under his belt. In a feisty 24 minutes, Dustin and Suzy compare best interviewing practices – and worst – and lay down a primer for getting you from knowing your purpose to landing the job that helps you live it. We’re all supposed to love change. To embrace the journey. To lean into transformation. But what happens when we do? We grow, and with growth comes all sorts of a-ha moments, some wonderful, yes, but others that bring us to our knees before they bring us to our senses. In this deeply personal solo episode of Becoming You, our host Suzy Welch recounts the four powerful lessons she learned on the road to her PhD, which she was awarded this May at the University of Bristol in England. Each lesson is shared with the hopes of resonance with you, as you walk your own path toward reinvention and renewal. Some may soften your heart, others may make you laugh, and the last will surely surprise you. It surprised Suzy herself. Becoming You is a podcast about finding out who we are and then turning that discovery into reality. Join us this week as Suzy explores what that process has meant to her, in ways that may very well mean something to you too. In Episode 64: Your Life Coach Has One Question for You. Do You Know the Answer?, our host Dr. Suzy Welch—professor of management practice at NYU Stern and author of the Becoming You book—presented five powerful questions, crowd-sourced from top life coaches in the Becoming You Certification Program at the NYU Stern | Initiative on Purpose and Flourishing. This week, you’ll hear four more. Each one is as sharp as a paring knife (without the ouch), designed to open your heart and mind, and maybe even bring healing to your soul and inspiration to your career. This week on Becoming You—the podcast that yearns to help you answer “What should I do with my life?”—a special mailbag episode tackles four listener questions, but looms the largest: “Life is already so hard,” it goes, “and careers are so complicated and relentless—why would anyone choose to have a child these days?” Typically, Becoming You’s host Suzy Welch is all about helping you hear your own inner voice; she is, as she likes to say, a “values agnostic.” This time is different, and through unflinching, deeply personal stories and a perspective that may challenge your assumptions, she confronts one of the biggest decisions of a lifetime head on and heart first. You may not agree with where she lands, but you will most likely be moved by how she got there. Also on the pod this week: Suzy answers a listener who wonders if it’s OK to be “working for the money” and the money only, and another listener who wonders how candid she should be in her job interviews about wanting work-life balance. A final listener challenges Suzy on the hot topic of whether “manifesting” is BS…or brilliant. In the end, this week’s episode isn’t just about motherhood or money—it’s about navigating the defining questions we all face on the road to becoming ourselves. Every day, we make decisions—big, small, and everything in between, each one shaping our careers and relationships, and sometimes even the course of our entire lives. And yet, most of us were never taught how to actually make a decision. Instead, we accept the conventional wisdom: "Just trust your gut." Too bad that advice is only right half the time. Yep, research shows that gut has a 50% hit rate. So why not just go toss a coin? Or wait -- there's a better way, and it's so easy too. All you have to do it...press play. Because in this episode, Suzy breaks the simple decision-making system that changed her life when everything was falling apart, and then put it into success overdrive when things turned around. It’s called 10-10-10, and it’s not about quick fixes or perfect choices—it’s about clarity, confidence, values (of course!) and making peace with the decisions that define us. Becoming You is a methodology for finding our purpose. For answering the question, "What should I do with my life?" In this quick and powerful episode, learn how good decision-making can help turn Becoming You's findings into reality. And as a bonus, find out how 10-10-10 was born one very long, very humiliating day in Hawaii when Suzy's kids themselves decided to go for broke. The demise of a job is rarely fun, whether it's by our own volition or not. Whether you've been fired or quit or somehow just eased out by mutual agreement and angst, every company separation is a little bit of a public death, and sometimes a personal one too. In this podcast, Suzy shares the four probing questions to unearth what really happened -- and what you should do next. Tune in to find out why and how every ending at work has the power to be transformed into the life beginning you've been waiting for. (Spoiler alert: job interviews are definitely not what they seem.) This fast and seriously funny episode is not to be missed if you’re interested in supercharging your growth, and don’t mind a bit of “hmm, really?” along the way. What happens when 50 of the world's most experienced life coaches gather in one room? Well, in this case, at Becoming You’s request, each one revealed the one “killer” question they need to know about you – that is, in order to take your life to the place it needs and wants to be. To explain: Just recently, the Becoming You methodology launched its first certification program at NYU Stern’s Initiative on Purpose and Flourishing. Some of the best life coaches from around the world were there, traveling from across the United States, as well as from Mexico, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. Each coach came to learn – but had so much to teach, too. Which prompted our host Suzy Welch to ask each attendee to share their one “unlock” question – the one that cuts straight to the heart of what's really going on when someone says, "I don't know what I want to do with my life." In this episode of Becoming You, we hear five of those questions straight from the coaches. But no surprise, Suzy has her thoughts on each as well. She dives deeply into each one, from sharing her own personal stories to a poignant poem about regret, weaving together insights about the "Four Horsemen" that gallop away with our values and Maslow's lesser-known concept of transcendence. These questions are at the heart of your journey to self-discovery and purpose. Start here to hear them, and begin the work of answering them in your own voice. Does Britney Spears need Becoming You to figure out her purpose? In this week’s irreverent, laughter-filled episode, Britney’s #1 fan (yes, we’re talking about Suzy) puts that question to the test, exploring Britney’s search for meaning and personhood through the lens of values and the Becoming You methodology. But that’s not all. Because why not analyze more celebrities while you’re on a values-excavation tear? Suzy also applies Becoming You to two other luminaries she suggests might benefit from a purpose inventory: the red-hot White Lotus star Walton Goggins, and the mysterious and controversial...Elon Musk. You can’t say we didn’t go there. This may not sound like your typical Becoming You pod, but in some ways it remains Becoming You at its core–a rumination on meaning and purpose, within ourselves, and within all. [Repeat from March, 2025.] Buckle up, friends, because today we’re tackling one of life’s sneakiest traps—the B+ life. You get what that means: Good job, decent relationships, maybe even some great days. But most of the time? It’s just… fine. And fine is the enemy of flourishing. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, "What do I do with my life?" or feeling stuck in the search for an authentic life while you live in a good-enough version of the present, you’re not alone. In this episode of Becoming You, we’re diving deep into why so many of us settle for “pretty good” when an A+ life is possible. Suzy will introduce you to one of her favorite, wildly effective exercises—the question that rips the veil off mediocrity, a real values revealer: What would make you cry from regret on your 85th birthday? Learn how this is a powerful tool for self discovery and can help you find your purpose in ways you never expected. Along the way, we talk to Paige—a wonderful, successful woman stuck in a B+ life who’s got dreams of something still more wonderful and successful. She knows she’s meant for more, but fear, expectations, and the fear of "being seen" are holding her back. Can you relate? If so, listen in as we dig into how she can break free—and how you can, too. If you’ve ever felt like you’re coasting when you should be soaring, this episode is for you. Let’s get you out of that "velvet coffin" and into the authentic life you were meant to live. It's time once again for a mailbag version of the Becoming You podcast, in which our host Suzy Welch replies out loud to a sampling of the DMs she usually answers in the time between when her dogs wake her every morning and it's safe to start emailing normal people. As usual, Becoming You's mailbag is a MIXED bag. One listener's question deals with retirement -- as in, "Why should I if I really don't want to?" Another needs help thinking through her internal debate over helping people as a way of life. She was raised to think that was all she should do...but maybe it's not? Also in the pod this week, a listener pushes back on Suzy's contention that first jobs don't matter. He has a tough story to share -- and Suzy has some tough love to share back. Finally, Suzy answers one of Becoming You's most common questions, about values and how often they change. Her answer may surprise you. Tune in to find that out -- and so much more. Over the past two episodes, you’ve met Becoming You alumni Max and Kristen as they explored their values and aptitudes — the foundational work of figuring out who they are, and what their purpose should be. Now, in the final part of this special three-part series, it all comes together. This week, Suzy guides Max and Kristen through the final element of the Becoming You method: Economically Viable Interests (or “EVIs”). Not just what you love, but what the world will pay you to do — without asking you to betray yourself in the process. What happens next is the most powerful moment yet. Kristen makes a bold, life-changing move to align her values and calling. Max discovers that the life he always thought he wanted might not be the one he needs — and finds joy, purpose, and surprise (omelet-making included) in a place he never expected. This is where the process both concludes…and starts all over again. Not at a perfect answer — but at a new kind of clarity. If you’ve ever wondered what it actually looks like to ask, “What should I do with my life?” — and then do something about it — this is what real change looks like. Last week, we began exploring the Becoming You process by uncovering values — the truths that quietly shape our choices and help point us towards our purpose. This week, we go deeper. In Part 2 of this three-part series, Suzy sits down again with alumni Max and Kristen to explore aptitudes — not the skills you’ve learned, but the ones you’re wired with. With some messy realness and a few surprises, Max and Kristen discover how their natural strengths explain not just what they’re good at — but why some roles never felt right. If you’ve ever been good at something but not fulfilled by it — or found yourself asking, “What should I do with my life?” — this episode may change how you see your strengths, your path, and what’s been missing. You’ve heard the phrase “Becoming You” — maybe in a friend’s recommendation, maybe in a moment when your own life felt off-track. But what does it really mean to “become” yourself? In this powerful first episode of a special three-part series, Suzy Welch — professor, career expert, and the host of Becoming You — takes you inside the very first and most foundational part of the process: the excavation of your core values. This isn’t about personality types or feel-good labels. It’s about uncovering the truths that quietly drive your choices — and figuring out why your life may not feel quite right, even when it looks good on paper. You’ll meet Kristen and Max, two people with wildly different backgrounds and stories, both of whom bravely open their lives to the Becoming You method. Kristen had everything she thought she wanted — the career, the family, the checklist complete — but something wasn’t clicking. Max had the dream job and the admiration of his peers, but also a deep, persistent misalignment he couldn’t explain. What happens when they begin to name the values they’ve been living by — and the ones they’ve been ignoring? Honest, funny, and deeply moving, this episode gives you a front-row seat to the moment where change begins. If you’ve ever wondered whether Becoming You could work for you — this is where you’ll find out. Before Becoming You was a methodology, a class, or a book — it was a question. A question that our host Suzy Welch grappled with for decades as she sought to make her way in the world, as a wife, journalist, mother, and professor. Is it ever really possible to write the story of our own lives, or are we fated to edit the script handed to us by our family, culture, and circumstances? In time, Suzy came to realize that her answer was…yes. And it wasn’t just her answer, she believed, it was all of ours. In this intimate and thoughtful episode, Suzy sits down with her daughter Sophia to explore two of the books that helped her reach that conclusion, and thus shape the entire Becoming You Methodology. They are The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen and Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. What begins as a conversation about literature quickly turns inward — becoming a candid reflection on generational patterns, personal reinvention, and the question that sits at the center of Suzy’s work and the Becoming You journey for all who take it. This week, we return to questions from the Becoming You reunion in New York — and to the complicated truth of what can happen after you find your purpose. First, you’ll meet Molly, who lands a job that aligns with her values — only to discover it comes with layoffs and instability. Then there’s Tim, an alum from the very first Becoming You cohort, who wonders whether we get to become ourselves more than once. What follows is a real conversation about the trade-offs of living your values, the unexpected upside of getting fired, and what it actually takes to keep evolving with purpose. If you’ve ever asked, “What should I do with my life?” — and then asked it again six months later — you’ll feel right at home. Recently, the Becoming You community gathered in person for a special event — and the questions were as big as ever. This episode features two Becoming You alumni facing different versions of the same dilemma: how do you move toward your purpose when it’s either far away… or still a little fuzzy? McKenna is a sustainability consultant by day and aspiring Broadway producer by night. Cole is a filmmaker-turned-professor whose values test with everything in the middle — leaving him unsure how to sharpen the path forward. Hear their questions — and the answers they receive — with candor, joy, and, yes, a well-earned rant about the one part of the methodology people tend to avoid (and shouldn’t). If you’ve ever asked yourself “What should I do with my life?” — and then wondered how fast to run toward the answer — this one’s for you. This week on Becoming You, we’re diving into the heart of it all: the methodology that’s changing lives, one purpose at a time. Whether you’re a first-time listener or a longtime fan (love you, by the way), this episode is your ultimate guide to answering the question that occupies us all heart, mind, and soul: What should I do with my life? In this foundational episode, Suzy takes you on a no-holds-barred journey through the Becoming You process, a framework she’s honed at NYU Stern School of Business and beyond. You’ll discover how your purpose lies at the intersection of three powerful forces: your values, your aptitudes, and your economically viable interests. But this isn’t some woo-woo self-help spiel. It’s a gritty, honest, and scientifically grounded approach to uncovering the life you were born to live. Along the way, Suzy shares two unforgettable stories of transformation—one explosive reinvention, one subtle yet profound tweak. Both will leave you inspired to confront the gap between the life you’re living and the life you’re meant to lead. And yes, there’s also a wacky confession about Joan of Arc (or “Joanie Baby,” as Suzy calls her) that ties it all together. If you’re ready to stop running in circles and start running toward your purpose, this is the episode for you. Every book has a backstory, and Becoming You (published today, heck yeah!) is no exception. In this episode, we go behind the scenes — not just of the writing of the book, but of the emotional excavation and journey of reinvention it required. Told Rashomon-style, this funny, poignant, and intimate episode features the voices of the people who lived the story alongside Suzy: her children, best friend, co-workers, even her trainer. Together, they trace the winding path from personal heartbreak to public purpose—starting with Suzy’s interior reckoning after the death of her husband, through the surprise success of Becoming You as a course at NYU, and her deep hesitation about turning the methodology into a book. At its core, Becoming You is a self-discovery method that helps people answer life’s most important question: What should I do with my life? And Suzy knew that writing it down—truly doing it justice—would take everything she had. But everything shifts after an unexpected walk in the woods with her daughter—a moment of clarity that becomes the turning point. This is the story of how Becoming You came to be. And it’s also the story of how Suzy, in writing it, became herself. It’s one of the more painful human experiences: being judged not for what we’ve done, but for what we value. This episode examines why those moments leave such a lasting mark — and why, so often, we end up doing the same to others. Listeners share stories of judgment given and received, and the consequences of not finding the right words when it mattered most. Alongside them, a provocative remedy: a way out of the cycle that strains relationships, narrows futures, and obscures purpose. In Becoming You, the question “What should I do with my life?” sits at the heart of every conversation. This episode explores how judgment can silence that question — sometimes before we even have the chance to ask it. We’re told to live intentionally — to take the reins, to choose boldly. But often, without realizing it, we drift. Titles accumulate, opportunities knock, life happens. And suddenly, the path we’re on isn’t one we meant to choose. In this episode, two listeners — separated by decades — unknowingly echo the same story: ambition deferred, then redefined. Alongside them, four saboteurs of intentional living: a framework for examining how and why we lose direction, and what it takes to course-correct towards a clearer sense of purpose. This is a conversation about decisions, drifts, and recalibration to get to a better answer to the question, “What should I do with my life?” A candid look at how people find themselves far from where they wanted to go — and what it might take to begin again. There’s no way around it: success is hard. It’s prized, pursued, endlessly theorized — and yet, remains frustratingly rare. Still, behind many lasting success stories lies a shared set of conditions. This episode explores one such framework: the PIE theory — a framework for understanding what actually endures. Disarmingly simple, quietly complex, and deeply revealing, it offers a lens into the mechanics of long-term achievement. Around it, a set of conversations with five people whose careers are defined less by spectacle than by staying power: Ken Langone, Linda Robinson, Andrew Davis, John Byrne, and Deborah Grubman. No hustle worship. No tidy prescriptions. Just a candid exploration of what long-term success might really require — and what it asks of us. Come with us this week as our host Suzy Welch demonstrates how good she is at pottery! Wait, don’t. Because she’s terrible. Not for lack of trying. She’s tried her entire life. And not for lack of love. It’s her favorite thing. And that’s pretty much the point of this week’s episode of Becoming You, the podcast devoted to answering the question, “What do I do with my life?” It’s about the things we want to do, and love to do, but shouldn’t do – with our careers, at least. Because we can’t. It’s just not…in us. We’re all great at something. We are. But we are not good at everything. Our job is not to resist that realization. Our job is to acknowledge it. And live it. Becoming You is a methodology that is designed to lead you to your purpose, which exists at the intersection of your values, your aptitudes, and your interests. Our focus this week is the second of that triad – aptitudes – urging us to ask not just what kind of work we should do. But what kind of work we shouldn’t. It’s a eureka that can change everything. Listen in as Suzy describes her four favorite ways to figure out your aptitudes once and for all – for the good of your career. And your life. Lots of people want to help other people. In their jobs. In their lives. In fact, lots of people would tell you "helping" is one of their main values. They only wish they could do it more. How wonderful that is in theory...and how complicated that can be in real life. Every week, Becoming You -- the podcast that aims to answer the question, "What do I do with my life?" -- explores what it actually takes to find and embrace your authentic life. And each week, we talk about the role of values in that journey. YOUR values, that is. This week, we put the spotlight on two values that often get confused because they're both about helping, Radius and Non Sibi. Radius is the value held by people who want to change the world. They yearn to be a part of big, systemic change -- the stuff legacies are made of. Non Sibi is the value that motivates people who want to help on a more intimate scale. We're talking small and personal acts of kindness, compassion, and aid. Both values are wonderful and powerful in their own way -- but they are truly distinct. What unites them is that they often, well, hurt in their application. How so? We'll discuss. There can be no talking about helping without talking about its trade-offs. To bring this pod and its ideas to life, we visit a farm (yes, with real pigs) to meet Rachel McCrystal, who followed a cow upstate, and never left for the sake of her cause. Then, we scrub in at a trauma unit with Dr. Jodie Taylor, whose Non Sibi mindset fuels her in the operating arena...and at the grocery store alike. Their stories aren’t just inspiring—they’re a mirror for all of us. Because when you understand your values, life’s biggest decisions suddenly become clearer. And maybe, just maybe, the path forward starts to reveal itself. So let’s dive in. Pigs, finding purpose, and the inevitable "ouch" of altruism—all here in this week’s Becoming You. What does it mean to find your purpose or to have an authentic life? Are either of those goals actually attainable – really? In this episode of Becoming You, Suzy sits down with bestselling author and top podcast host Liz Moody for an insightful—and at times surprising—conversation about Eudemonia, the often-misunderstood “happiness value” that can make or break your relationships, career, and sense of purpose. Liz recently took the Becoming You values assessment, and let’s just say, her results were revealing. We’re unpacking what it means when your top value is at odds with your reality and how understanding your values can be the key to designing a life that truly fits you. Buckle up, friends, because today we’re tackling one of life’s sneakiest traps—the B+ life. Learn how this is a powerful tool for self discovery and can help you find your purpose in ways you never expected.Along the way, we talk to Paige—a wonderful, successful woman stuck in a B+ life who’s got dreams of something still more wonderful and successful. She knows she’s meant for more, but fear, expectations, and the fear of "being seen" are holding her back. Can you relate? If so, listen in as we dig into how she can break free—and how you can, too.If you’ve ever felt like you’re coasting when you should be soaring, this episode is for you. Let’s get you out of that "velvet coffin" and into the authentic life you were meant to live. Finding purpose starts here. You don't have to read the news to know that anxiety is everywhere and anywhere these days, endemic across generations and cultures. But where Suzy confronts anxiety most often is in the Becoming You classroom, where her students ask a question many of us have wondered: How can I possibly design my perfect future when my head and heart are consumed with so much worry right here and now? In other words: Can career planning and anxiety even coexist? And if so, how? In this episode of Becoming You, Suzy describes her own early encounters with anxiety and the strategies she used to beat back "the beast," as she calls it, but her recollections are expanded and deepened by the stories and insights offered by Chrissy Rutherford, a writer, cultural observer, and influencer who found her life's purpose even as she wrestled with panic attacks that started at age six. Today, Chrissy, an international traveler, astute commentator, and fashion icon, is a inspiring example of how to live with anxiety, not despite it. Indeed, it is an exploration of the gift of anxiety where this episode ultimately leads, as both Suzy and Chrissy relate how anxiety changed their lives -- for the better. Tune in to hear their message of power, transformation, and hope. In this week's deeply personal episode of Becoming You, we revisit one of the podcast's most loved stories -- about Suzy's swan named, well, "Suzy" -- and bring it up-to-date with an ending that might surprise you, because it certainly surprised Suzy herself. But don't get the idea that this episode is about bird life (although it is...a little)...it's more about human life, and the universal struggle to shed old identities and embrace the scareforia that leads to the new. In such a way, it is the quintessential Becoming You journey, one into our heart's desires about the lives we lead today...and the ones we must forge to create our tomorrows. Your own decisions may never be the same. The Becoming You method of purpose-discovery is based on the premise that there’s one wild and precious life that we’re each meant to live. But it also acknowledges that there’s real life out there. Real life is where we too often cede our hoped-for dreams of purpose and joy to the many seemingly inescapable demands, constraints, obstacles and challenges that come with work and family and well, everything. Real life is why so many of us end up living in “The Velvet Coffin,” a term Suzy uses to describe the comfortable accommodation we can make with a life on pause. “It’s OK,” we tell ourselves when that happens. “Sure, I’m making some compromises. Sure, I’m postponing stuff. But this is how it has to be right now.” Right now can last a long time, can’t it? It doesn’t have to be that way. Tune into Becoming You this week as Suzy talks about how and why we end up in the Velvet Coffin – sometimes without even noticing it – and best of all, how we can push our way out before it’s too late. What happens when two forces, your home life and your work life —both central to your identity—need you with equal urgency at the exact same moment? Well, chaos happens. Or guilt. Or angst. Or sheer, utter exhaustion. Or...all of the above. In this episode, Suzy gets into a heart-to-heart with Jennifer, a woman who finds herself caught in a battle between two of her deepest values: her unwavering commitment to work and her devotion to her family. It’s a struggle Suzy knows all too well—because once upon a time, she was Jennifer. Her battle scars lead her to counsel Jennifer with an answer you may not expect. The demise of a job is rarely fun, whether it's by our own volition or not. Whether you've been fired or quit or somehow just eased out by mutual agreement and angst, every company separation is a little bit of a public death, and sometimes a personal one too. That's why it's OK to mourn, it's OK to rage -- for only a bit. After that, the work has to start. The inner work. In this podcast, Suzy shares the four probing questions to unearth what really happened -- and what you should do next. You can want more in life. You can want less. You can choose to take a walk in dark and snowy woods with four crazy dogs, or you can choose to stay inside by the fire reading Jane Eyre. How edgy, wild, and exciting your life is, or how contained, chill, and peaceful it is – that choice is on you. The answer depends on your value of Scope. And the truth is, all values choices are on you. Except the choice to not live by your values at all, and just…survive. In this episode of the pod, Suzy is abducted by aliens and ends up living four months in complete chaos. OK, she wasn’t actually abducted, but she might as well have been, since this period was so divorced from what Becoming You is all about. Tune in to hear what she learned during this time apart from her longed-for self – and what she would advise anyone who also wants their life journey to be of their own design…and desire. Because we all so ardently want to find our purpose, it's not unusual for people to enter the Becoming You process with the question, "How will I know when I've found what I'm looking for?" To the unique place that you were meant to live and work; the territory where you will feel exquisitely alive. Have you traveled through each one yet? Take a deep breath and tune in. It's so bad out there, isn't it? There's war. Violence. Polarization. And sometimes, there's our own work too, weighing us down, because it's so much less than we want and need. So why bother even trying to find our purpose in the morass? What's the point? Hello! Here at the Becoming You pod, we're so happy you asked! Because we have an answer to that question, which is, basically, the case for hope, even and especially when times are like these, daunting, and messy, and too darn scary. It is not uncommon for people undertaking Becoming You’s self-discovery journey to notice that the process is, well, impacting their marriage, or even making them wonder if they should get married at all. After all, isn’t there something inherently freeing about finally and fully becoming ALL YOU? It’s a big question, and here’s a shocker, Suzy has a big answer, which includes the best (and only) marriage “trick” she advises — because Becoming You is hard, but Becoming Us is even harder. Sometimes, we’re happy-ish and that’s fine. After all, we tell ourselves, no one is overjoyed about everything all the time! But other times, we’re not-so-ok and sense our lives could be fuller, richer, or somehow more authentic. What then? Suzy takes on that exact question this week when she responds to two pod listeners: Barbara, a successful marketing executive who has everything a person could want in life – except a sense of purpose, and Caycee, who finds herself in daily battle with her conflicting values of financial security and flexibility. You could fill a library with all the books written about leadership, and Suzy's read most of them (and written a few herself.) But over the past several years, she has developed a new rubric which elucidates the four key "personality clusters" -- e.g. personality traits -- that she believes are the true gateway to professional success. In this podcast, Suzy reveals and explains those traits, and to make them come alive with stories and a bit of lively debate, she is joined by Dr. Ellen Gendler, a world-famous medical leader whom Suzy believes is an exemplar of each and every one. It's been a week, hasn't it? No matter your political affiliation, or how you felt about the election, big and raw emotions were everywhere, and, well, let's just say, not everyone was at their nicest. But here's a question to ponder. What would it look and feel like if suddenly, one day, everyone showed up and said, "Whoever you are, and whatever you believe, I love you?" Astonishingly, Suzy had just such an experience the weekend before the presidential vote went down, at a long-planned wellness weekend in Texas. Why is it, even after we grow up, we still always wonder what we should do when we grow up? It's crazy -- or maybe it's not. There are the famous Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which are not just big and hairy, but incredibly terrifying. Then, there are what Suzy calls "The Four Horsemen of Values Destruction." They are also fearsome, and, unfortunately, real enough to gallop away with your life. Listen in this week as Suzy describes and illustrates how the desire for economic security, the lure of expediency, the press of expectations, and the interruption of events might be exactly why your life is moving in the wrong direction. We laughed. We cried. We admitted we were idiots. We counted the ways. Then we said we’d do it all over again. Actually, that was only some of us. On today’s episode, Suzy reminisces about her days at Quadio, the college music streaming company she helped run. Quadio didn’t end up making it, but guess what? This is a story with a happy ending. It is! Quadio taught everyone on the team something they needed to know about themselves — their values. Also in the episode: Invaluable wisdom from the brilliant businessman, and Suzy’s good friend, Claudio Fernández-Aráoz who came to sit down with Suzy all the way from Argentina. Plus, a surprise life lesson that you didn’t know existed, but you don’t want to miss: the Golden Rule of Mountaineering. If you're human, you've hated someone. OK, maybe you're special, and you've only stooped to dislike someone, and, if so, good for you. But that's not what this episode is about. It's about the value we call "Belonging," one of the most complicated in the Becoming You lexicon because it's about friends. How we take care of them and how they take care of us, or not. In this episode, Suzy ruminates and pontificates about what Belonging means to her, and how she learned that through her messy and often fraught relationship with her grandmother Francesca, a radical woman who had much to teach, both positive and negative. Also in this episode, Suzy apologizes for a rookie mistake she recently made, but corrected when her old friend Andy shamed her into doing so. Go Andy! Press play to hear the whole sordid story. Ten years ago, Suzy traveled to Seattle to film a Today Show segment about a young make-up entrepreneur who was doing business differently. For every pair of false eyelashes she sold, she gave away a set to a chemotherapy patient who was losing her hair. At the time, Thrive Causemetics was based in Karissa Bodnar’s kitchen. The company has been so successful Karissa gave away – HELLO, GAVE AWAY – $150 million dollars to cancer patients and causes. And yet, Karissa would tell you that she’s failed along the way so many times she even has a playlist of “failure songs.” We share some of those tunes, plus so much more, in this interview that happened when Karissa stopped by Suzy’s house to reminisce, compare notes, challenge each other, and, as usual, talk about the ageless question of how to know your values – and live by them. Also in the pod, we answer: Can your boss be your friend? And, importantly, can gray hair be cured? Our topic this week is the value of fame – yes, fame is a value! – but why leave it there? In this episode, we also talk about how much we can lie to ourselves about this particular value, not to mention a few others we have hiding in our hearts. Why do we do this? Because we’re human. No getting around it. Also in this episode: Suzy’s profound take on the fluffy Netflix mini-series “The Perfect Couple,” and ruminations on the desire…never to work. Hit play! When it comes to getting a job – say, the job of your dreams – you have to get existential before you get tactical. But what’s really killer is when you’re both at the same time. And that’s what this episode of the pod is all about, with tips galore from Suzy on both. Being existential, that is, and tactical. Also this week, the Becoming You values-probing question that makes everyone cry. It’s supposed to. There’s a little voice inside all of us telling us we were born to do something. You know it’s true. Sometimes, this voice translates into our “passion,” and as we grow up, we have to decide whether or not to admit this passion aloud and chase it, for all the world to see, or be logical, and go do “normal work.” In this episode, Suzy discusses the eternal conflict between these two routes, and then, oops, drops an epic rock & roll story on us out of the blue. What a strange and unnecessary thing it is that people enter the working world mostly clueless about the working world. There are only two things that everyone agrees on in this world. That Dolly Parton is great, and that networking is awful. In this episode, Suzy focuses on the latter, making the case that we should all deep-six stupid, boring, useless small talk in hotel conference rooms for making true friends. Every now and again, often out of the blue, we realize something kind of wild about ourselves. Like, we always want to be in Italy even though we live in Chicago. Or, we truly miss work on a random Saturday. Or, we’re on a plane that’s been delayed seven hours…and we’re not mad at all. What do these aha moments tell us about? Our values. Which is why we shouldn't ignore them, but lean way in to find out more. That’s where we go in today’s podcast, with an exercise to help, along with other various ranting and raving around why we resist our dream jobs, who wins this week’s secret crush award, and what Anna Wintour recently said that is so true it’s scary. Press play to enter the first-ever episode of the Becoming You podcast and hear as Suzy Welch recounts just one such moment for her in 1998, when she spotted a group of women in glorious hats walking down 5th Avenue. The rest is history – well, sort of. Hear about that too. And stick around to hear about the “Becoming You” methodology and NYU class that grew out of that fateful sighting. Have you ever wondered, “What should I do with my life?” Or, “Should I stay or should I go?” Or, “Is there anyone out there who actually tells the freaking truth about life and work today, but also does not leave me in despair?” Wonder no more! The “Becoming You” podcast has arrived, hosted by Suzy Welch, the business journalist-turned-professor at the helm of NYU’s wildly popular self-discovery class by the same name. A three New York Times best-seller and frequent contributor to the Today Show and the Wall Street Journal, Professor Welch is considered a leading expert on decision-making, and the discovery and pursuit of authentic purpose. But virtually no topic is off-bounds in her irreverent new podcast, from parenting fails (including her own) to perfect poems (none of her own, thank God.) Also included: Pointed opinions on dogs, Gen Z, marriage, credit default swaps, golf skirts, career killing mistakes, and under-appreciated TV shows you really have to see immediately. OK, there is actually nothing in the podcast about credit default swaps. Tune in every week to laugh, learn, get riled up, get calmed down, and basically get closer to becoming you, joyfully, in this crazy, upside-down, scary, messy, and altogether beautiful world we share.
