In this episode, we’re breaking down the nuance behind comedogenic ingredients, why they aren’t inherently “bad,” and how your individual skin type, barrier health, and formulation all play a role in whether a product will actually break you out. I also dive into some of the new skincare products right now and share cleaner, more skin-supportive alternatives—so you can make swaps without sacrificing results. We’ll cover: What “pore-clogging” really means (and why it’s not one-size-fits-all)Why ingredient lists alone don’t tell the full storyThe role of skin barrier health in breakoutsHow to assess if a product is actually right for YOUCleaner dupes for trending skincare productsIf you’ve been avoiding ingredients out of fear or feeling overwhelmed by conflicting information, this episode will help you make more confident, informed decisions about your skincare. In this episode, we explore how infrared sauna use and infrared light therapy can support hormonal balance and mental health. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared heat penetrates the body more deeply at lower temperatures, helping activate the parasympathetic nervous system and reduce cortisol levels. This stress-lowering effect plays a key role in supporting hormones, including thyroid function, insulin sensitivity, and overall endocrine balance. Infrared light therapy, particularly red and near-infrared wavelengths, works at the cellular level by boosting mitochondrial function and increasing energy production (ATP). This can enhance recovery, reduce inflammation, and support brain health. These cellular benefits may also contribute to improved mood, with research suggesting positive effects on anxiety, depression, and neurotransmitter balance. Both infrared sauna and light therapy can promote endorphin release, improve circulation, and support better sleep—key factors for mental clarity and emotional well-being. When used consistently and alongside healthy lifestyle habits, they can be powerful tools for managing stress, optimizing hormones, and enhancing overall resilience. Connie Zack is the co-founder of Sunlighten, the global leader in infrared sauna and light therapy. Inspired by her brother's health transformation, she and her husband, Aaron, left successful pharmaceutical careers to revolutionize the industry with science-backed innovations. Connie is a pioneer in infrared light technology, driving widespread education on its benefits through collaborative partnerships. A passionate advocate for holistic health, Connie integrates nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, and infrared therapy into her life. As a mother, wife, wellness enthusiast, entrepreneur, she brings light, hope and happiness to the world through her expertise in how infrared light and heat impacts healthy lifespan. In this episode, we simplify what it really looks like to start a low-tox lifestyle—without the overwhelm. After 10+ years on this journey, the biggest takeaway is that it’s not about perfection, but small, sustainable changes over time. We begin with what you use most daily, like personal care and cleaning products, with a major focus on reducing synthetic fragrance. From there, we cover the importance of filtering your water and being mindful of what you drink and eat out of, aiming to reduce plastic exposure where possible. The key approach is to swap products as you run out rather than replacing everything at once. This keeps the process realistic, affordable, and long-lasting. At the end of the day, it’s about simple steps that support your health and your family—done consistently over time. Clean and low tox brands I love Sharing my favorites on my socials @drhalieschoff

Castor oil has been around for centuries, but it’s having a serious resurgence in the wellness world. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Marisol to break down what castor oil actually does — no hype, no magical claims — just physiology, clinical insight, and practical application. We unpack how castor oil may support the nervous system through intentional touch and parasympathetic activation, why castor oil packs are still widely used in holistic practice, and what’s realistic when it comes to beauty and anti-aging claims. In this episode I am chatting about one of the most overlooked foundations of preconception health: your nervous system. So often, the focus is entirely on hormones, supplements, and lab testing — but your nervous system is the lens through which your body interprets safety. And safety is essential for optimal hormone signaling, ovulation, and creating an environment supportive of pregnancy. I’m sharing some of my favorite simple, practical tools I’m personally prioritizing in this season, and with many of my preconception clients, to help shift the body out of chronic stress and into a more regulated, resilient state. These are not complicated protocols — they’re small, consistent signals of safety to your body. If you’re in a preconception season, or simply working toward better hormone balance, these practices can be powerful additions to your foundation. Red light therapy is everywhere right now — from skincare devices to sauna rooms to $20 bulbs online. But not all “red light” is created equal. In this episode of Alpha Health and Wellness Radio, I’m breaking down the real science behind: Red LED light Near-infrared (NIR) light Incandescent red heat bulbs Because they are not the same thing — and they do very different things in the body. If you’ve been wondering whether you need a panel, if a sauna bulb is enough, or which wavelengths actually matter for hormones, skin, recovery, or thyroid health — this episode will clear it up. Red light (630–660 nm)Best for skin, collagen, acne, surface-level healing. Near-infrared (810–880 nm)Penetrates deeper — ideal for joints, muscle recovery, brain health, thyroid, and systemic inflammation. Incandescent red bulbsPrimarily provide heat and circulation benefits — not precise mitochondrial stimulation. If you’re going to invest, combining red + near-infrared wavelengths gives you both surface and deep tissue benefits. In this episode of Alpha Health and Wellness Radio, I dive into one of the most requested topics lately — peptides. What they are, how they work, who they’re for, and where the conversation is getting overhyped. I break down the difference between regenerative support and biohacking culture, and where peptides may have a role in tissue repair, performance, longevity, and metabolic health — when used appropriately and under guidance. Then we shift into a live Q&A where I answer your questions on some of my favorite wellness topics. Peptides What peptides actually are (and what they’re not) Common types used for recovery, metabolism, and cognitive support Who should consider them — and who shouldn’t The importance of medical oversight and realistic expectations Home Water Filters Why water quality matters more than most people think What to look for in a filtration system The difference between basic filters vs. comprehensive systems Why remineralization is often overlooked Castor Oil Packs While TTC When they may be supportive When to pause during your cycle How castor oil may support lymphatic flow and circulation Brain Health & Memory Foundational habits that matter more than supplements Electrolytes I love Why I love them especially for postpartum The connection between stress, sodium, and adrenal output When electrolytes are helpful — and when they’re unnecessary What to look for (and avoid) in electrolyte products Favorite nontoxic brands My website www.drhalieschoff.com Instagram @drhalieschoff
In this episode of Alpha Health and Wellness Radio, I sit down with my friend Chelsea, founder of a locally sourced, grass-fed beef organ supplement made right here in the Finger Lakes. We break down why organ meats were once considered sacred foods in traditional cultures — and why they may be one of the most nutrient-dense tools we’re overlooking in modern wellness. If you’ve ever been curious about liver, heart, or kidney but don’t know where to start (or you’re not exactly excited to cook them), this conversation is for you. Why organ meats are considered nature’s multivitamin The difference between grass-fed, locally sourced organs vs. conventional Who may benefit most from beef organ support How soil quality and sourcing matter Why nose-to-tail eating supports sustainability and mineral balance How to incorporate ancestral eating into busy family life Simple, nourishing meals the whole family will actually enjoy We also talk practically about what it looks like to prioritize nutrient-dense meals without overcomplicating your life — because real wellness has to work for families. Chelsea shares her heart behind creating a product that supports local farmers while making ancestral nutrition accessible and convenient. If you’re looking to build meals around protein, minerals, and real food foundations — this episode will give you clarity and confidence. Little Fisher Farmhouse based in Fishers, New York, was founded by functional nutrition practitioner, ancestral food blogger, and food-as-medicine advocate Chelsea Rose and her husband, Max. Together, they created Offally Good Grass-Fed Organs: a whole-food supplement originally crafted to support Chelsea's body during her childbearing years. After experiencing how good they felt, they knew they had to share these little capsules of vitality with others. These nutrient dense capsules feed the mitochondria- supporting energy, mental clarity and inviting you to feel and live optimally. Max and Chelsea are deeply devoted to creating a whole-food supplement with small batch integrity, grounded in holistic farming practices and a deep respect for the interconnectedness of all life - honoring both the animal and the harvest. By utilizing nutrient-rich organ meats, we can help reduce waste in the harvesting process, ensuring the whole animal is valued and intentionally incorporated for its highest benefit. She is passionate about empowering women to take control of their health and take charge of their wellness journeys with personalized, compassionate care. She brings balance to the low-tox world and educates people around a wide array of topics, ranging from environmental toxins to healthy hormones, and she will forever encourage women to advocate for themselves and require informed consent in every step of their healthcare journey. Carly is a self-proclaimed crunchy mom of 1 with another on the way! In this episode, we explore the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) and how cycle tracking can be used for both pregnancy prevention and conception by understanding real-time hormonal patterns—not guesswork. We discuss what true cycle literacy looks like, common misconceptions around FAM, and why tracking biomarkers like basal body temperature and cervical fluid gives women more data, not more pressure. We also have an honest conversation about home birth—who it may be appropriate for, how proper screening and support matter, and why safety is about preparation, not location alone. In this episode, I’m walking through my current skin routine—the topicals I’m using and loving for acne scars, barrier repair, dry skin, and calming hormonal breakouts. We talk about why gentle, supportive products matter more than aggressive “fix-it” formulas and how I choose topicals that work with the skin, not against it. I also share simple, realistic tips to support lymphatic flow for hormonal acne—because congestion, inflammation, and poor drainage play a much bigger role in breakouts than most people realize. And of course, we connect the dots between gut health and skin, explaining how digestion, detox pathways, and inflammation show up on your face even when your routine looks “clean.” If your skin feels stuck in a flare cycle, this episode will help you simplify, support, and heal more strategically. Nervous system regulation isn’t just about breathwork, cold exposure, or calming rituals. Those tools matter—but they’re only half the equation. In this episode, we break down why true nervous system support is a two-way street: regulating the system and removing the internal stressors that keep the body stuck in survival mode. Dr. Halie talks about how things like gut infections, parasites, mold exposure, chronic inflammation, and nutrient deficiencies quietly drive fight-or-flight, making regulation practices feel ineffective or short-lived. If you’re doing “all the right things” but still feel wired, tired, or inflamed, this episode explains why—and what a more honest, root-cause approach to nervous system healing actually looks like. In this conversation with the founder of Boroux, we dig into why clean water is foundational for health, what most people overlook about filtration, and how the materials inside your filter can make or break its effectiveness. Why Filtering Your Water MattersMunicipal systems only address basic safety, not long-term exposure. Trace chemicals, microplastics, heavy metals, chlorine byproducts, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues slip through. Your body deals with these daily, and reducing that load makes a real difference in energy, inflammation, and overall resilience. Not all filters are created with safe, stable components. Cheap plastics can leach into the water you’re trying to clean, and low-grade metals or resins can introduce new contaminants. Boroux uses high-integrity materials designed to stay inert, durable, and non-reactive—meaning the water stays as clean as the filter promises. How Carbon Filtration Actually WorksActivated carbon acts like a molecular sponge. Its porous structure traps contaminants through adsorption, binding them to the carbon surface. It’s especially good at reducing chlorine, VOCs, organic compounds, and improving taste and odor. When paired with high-quality materials and proper flow design, carbon filtration becomes one of the most reliable ways to clean everyday drinking water. Shop Boroux filters and glass products--code drhalie10 Key Takeaways Clean water isn’t optional—it's the foundation of metabolic and cellular health. The filter’s materials matter just as much as the filtration method. Activated carbon is powerful when used correctly and supported by quality build design. Boroux’s approach focuses on purity from the inside out. Follow Boroux on socials Follow and support the show @drhalieschoff Clean and low tox brands I love

Here’s what we cover: 🧠 The Less Talked About Side of Botox: Why Botox is more than just a local muscle relaxer—and how it impacts the nervous system Facial asymmetry, muscle atrophy, and skin laxity: what happens over time How it may affect facial feedback (yes, that’s a real thing) and emotional processing 💆♀️ Healthy, Holistic Alternatives That Actually Work: Facial cupping: what it is, how it supports lymph, circulation, and collagen Gua sha: not just trendy—why it matters for muscle tone and fascia health Nervous system support + jaw tension: how stress shows up on the face The role of hydration, mineral status, and blood flow in skin aging Megan McCue is a medical speech-language pathologist and the author of the books Iatrogenic Botulism 101 and Notox. In this episode, I'm challenging the fear-based narrative around high cholesterol and unpacking what your labs are really telling you. Spoiler: high cholesterol isn’t a diagnosis—it’s a data point that needs context. We dive into why dietary cholesterol (hello, eggs and beef) isn’t the cause of clogged arteries, why inflammation and metabolic health matter way more, and how to read your cholesterol panel in a more informed and less fear-driven way. Here’s what we cover: 🧠 Cholesterol Basics: What cholesterol actually does in the body (hint: it’s essential, not evil) Why your body makes most of your cholesterol internally The difference between total cholesterol vs. meaningful patterns 💥 Why It’s Not About the Number: The truth about LDL and why size and density matter What HDL and triglyceride levels really tell us Why the Triglyceride:HDL ratio is one of the best predictors of cardiovascular risk 🔥 Inflammation Is the Bigger Issue: How oxidized cholesterol and inflammation—not cholesterol itself—lead to plaque The role of blood sugar imbalances, stress, and processed oils Why cholesterol shows up to “patch damage” in the body—it’s a response, not the root cause 🌿 What to Focus On Instead: Supporting metabolic health and inflammation with nutrition and lifestyle Looking at full labs—including particle size and ratios The importance of bile flow, liver support, and nervous system regulation in fat metabolism 💬 The Reframe: Cholesterol is not the enemy—it’s a messenger. Today, we’re digging into a lesser-talked-about (but super important) part of digestion: bile flow and gallbladder health. Your gallbladder isn’t just there to cause pain during a cleanse—it’s a key player in breaking down fats, supporting liver detox, and keeping bloating in check. In this episode, we cover: 🧠 What bile is, and why it matters WAY more than most people realize 🫙 How sluggish bile flow can lead to bloating, nausea, food intolerances, and hormone issues 🫁 Why your gallbladder is not useless—and what happens when it’s not supported 🥬 Foods, herbs, and habits that naturally promote better bile flow 🚫 Common wellness practices (like low-fat diets or over-cleansing) that might be messing with your gallbladder 🧪 Signs your bile flow may be off—even if your labs are “normal” Your digestion isn’t just about what you eat—it’s about how your body breaks it down and moves it through. In this episode, Dr. Abby and I are breaking down why these tiny nutrients play a massive role in energy, hydration, mood, and overall health. If you feel like you’re doing all the things for detox—supplements, clean eating, maybe even coffee enemas—but you’re still bloated, sluggish, or stuck... this episode is for you. Today we’re talking about one of the most overlooked pieces of the detox and digestion puzzle: your vagus nerve. This isn’t just a “nervous system” conversation—it’s a foundational one. Because if your vagus nerve isn’t activated, your body literally can’t shift into rest, digest, or detox mode efficiently. The good news? One of the easiest, most effective ways to support vagal tone and help your liver, gut, and nervous system do what they’re built to do—is completely free: diaphragmatic breathing. The vagus nerve 101: what it is and why it’s key for detox, digestion, and nervous system regulation How a sluggish vagus nerve can block liver detox and leave you feeling puffy, anxious, or inflamed Why supporting your nervous system is a non-negotiable step in any healing protocol A simple breakdown of diaphragmatic breathing and why it’s so powerful What to look for if you suspect your vagus nerve needs support Daily practices (that take 2 minutes or less) to start gently activating vagal tone Remember, detox isn’t just about what you take—it’s about what your body feels safe enough to release.Supporting your vagus nerve is one of the most foundational (and free!) things you can do to unlock deeper healing. In this episode, we dive into the vital role of drainage pathways in the body’s detoxification process. Drainage pathways refer to the systems that help eliminate toxins and waste, primarily through the lymphatic system, bowel movements, and sweating. When these pathways are blocked or sluggish, the body struggles to detoxify effectively, leading to a buildup of harmful substances. The lymphatic system acts as a key defender, transporting toxins away from tissues; regular bowel movements ensure waste is efficiently expelled; and sweating helps release toxins through the skin. Join us as we explore how maintaining open drainage pathways is essential for optimal health and effective detoxification. Ivelisse is a young and vibrant wife and mother of four. She is also a stage 4 colon cancer survivor. Her journey begins long before her diagnosis. Her father died of colon cancer when he was in his late thirties. She knew that family history put her at higher risk of developing colon cancer at a young age and was diligent about getting regular colonoscopies, eating organic and exercising. Despite this, she developed colon cancer more than a year before she was due for her next colonoscopy. She was just 37. A week after diagnosis, Ivelisse had 15 inches of her colon removed along with 28 lymph nodes. The pathology report would later show that the tumor had perforated the colon wall and that the cancer was present in one of the 28 lymph nodes, “a very good sign” according to the doctors. Obviously the presence of cancer outside the colon wall necessitated further treatment. Jimmy and Ivelisse consulted a variety of doctors, did much reading and research, and bathed the whole process in prayer. They concluded that conventional chemotherapy did not offer the best success rate. In her case chemotherapy would only increase her survival rate by only 10-13%. Instead they chose a complementary and alternative approach. Surprisingly, her oncologist agreed to continue to monitor her despite refusing chemotherapy. Ivelisse was about a week into her immune therapy when she went in for her 5 week post operation appointment. Her oncologist gave them the shocking news that the cancer had spread to her liver. This put her at stage IV colon cancer. Ivelisse went in for surgery once again to remove the tumor. They removed about 20% of her liver. After surgery, Ivelisse began her prescribed protocol by her complementary and alternative doctor which included daily alternating injections of mistletoe and thymus, cimetidine, homeopathic remedies and additional supplements. Raw Milk & Deadlifts was founded by lifelong bestfriends (since kindergarten) Tommy Wheatley and Luke Kidwell. Although they consider themselves blessed to live/work on a farm, surrounded by nature, they NEVER grew up farming and certainly never thought they would find themselves farming! Tommy & Luke grew up in Jefferson County, West Virginia, and had many other interests growing up rather than farming, such as: Sports, working out, hunting, an obsession with westerns & cowboy films, organizing ‘fight clubs’ in the local Gold’s gym, and much more. Dr. Stephanie Canestraro graduated with Honors from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Prior to that, she received an Honors Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario. She has completed the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Course at McMaster University, as well as Biomedical Dry Needling. When Dr. Stephanie’s health began to decline early in her chiropractic career, and the allopathic medical system had nothing to offer, she began her journey towards Functional Medicine. Her interest in the human body, combined with her failing health, created a passion for finding the answers to her own health issues, and eventually everyone around her. She has been certified through Functional Medicine University and recently became a member of the prestigious IFMCP (Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner) group. She continues her own research into Functional Medicine and is dedicated to finding answers to her patients’ issues. Dr. Stephanie follows an integrative approach when treating her patients, utilizing a number of techniques, such as Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, joint manipulation, ART®, custom orthotics, Fascial Abrasion, Graston techniques, and performance optimization taping techniques. Active with continuing education courses, Dr. Stephanie continually integrates new techniques into her practice with the aim of improving function and reducing pain in her patients. Dr. Stephanie works mostly with elite athletes using her training as a Chiropractor and soft tissue specialist. She also uses comprehensive functional medicine testing, combined with therapeutic doses of supplements and specific diets, in addition to lifestyle changes (sleep hygiene, meditation, coping techniques, imagery, biofeedback, nature therapy, etc.) for performance optimization or to treat specific health issues of players. She is currently a consulting practitioner for players on the Toronto Maple Leafs, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, ACE Tennis, Toronto Tennis City, and individual Hollywood actors and actresses alike. Her passion lies in concussions, degenerative neurological diseases, and gastrointestinal issues.
