Only seven weeks separated the television premiere of Magical Mystery Tour on Boxing Day 1967 and the Beatles decamping to India in February 1968. By the time The Beatles Anthology finally appeared in 1995, it had taken over 25 years to produce. Producer George Martin wanted to build on two successful singles, and he needed to figure out how to capture a band that had become a fiercely able live act. 1972 was the first year in his career that Paul McCartney didn’t put out an album. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t busy: Wings became a live band with tours in the U.K. and Europe; they released a scattering of stand-alone singles; and they worked towards the release of Red Rose Speedway, the second Wings album, which came out in 1973. In 1971, Paul McCartney decided his third post-Beatles album would be as a band, and the band was called Wings. He was 29. Through Wings he would live the fantasy he had suggested to The Beatles when they started the Get Back project in January 1969: be a real band, start from scratch and hit the road. At the end of 1967, the Magical Mystery Tour came to town, presented by The Beatles as a TV special and novel double EP.  In the USA, the six-song EP was turned into an 11-track album.  Nowadays it’s become an official Beatles album in the canon.  Does this non-Beatles-sanctioned compilation stand up as possibly their best?
