Get your ticket for the Exiles Conference in Minneapolis! April 28-May 2! https://www.theologyintheraw.com/exiles26 In the last few months, there’s been fresh conversation about hell—sparked in part by Kirk Cameron's seeming endorsement of annihilationism. Of course, this sparked a flood of Twitter threads, and YouTube reactions about the nature of hell. But this isn’t a new debate. Christians have wrestled with the nature of hell for centuries. While eternal conscious torment has been the dominant view in the Western church, annihilationism (or conditional immortality) has deep historical roots as well. And proponents on both sides take Scripture seriously. In this episode, I sit down with Paul Copan and Chris Date to talk through the biblical and theological case for their respective views. Paul is a philosopher and apologist at Palm Beach Atlantic University and the author of over 40 books, including Is God a Moral Monster? Chris is a theologian and the voice behind Rethinking Hell and Theopologetics, where he’s written and spoken extensively in defense of annihilationism. If debates aren't your thing... don't worry. This one was super conversational and friendly. They disagree, but they're good friends and are confident enough in their convictions that they don't feel the need to attack or strawman each other. For over 3 1/2 years, I researched what the Bible says about women in church leadership. I didn't have a conclusion when I started out. For this first video, I invited Dr. Thaddeus Williams and Rev. Dr. Malcolm Foley to discuss and debate the role of social justice in the mission of the the Church. His book with Brazos Press, The Anti-Greed Gospel: Why the Love of Money is the Root of Racism and How The Church Can Create a New Way Forward, argues that the only truly antiracist Christian communities are the ones that resist greed and exploitation Thaddeus Williams (Ph.D., Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) serves as tenured professor of theology for Biola University. Subscribe to Theology in the Raw on Patreon to instantly unlock this full Bonus Q&A. You’ll also have access to a huge archive of bonus episodes, Extra Innings, and free video content from the Exiles in Babylon archives. Here’s the questions you’ll find when you unlock the full episode! * Huldah interpreted Scripture for men and was sanctioned by God as a prophet to do so. Does that role for women change in the New Testament? * Do you see this issue as an agree-to-disagree issue between Christians? How important is it and why? * Does Phoebe being a letter carrier necessarily mean that she is teaching authoritatively? Isn't Paul the true authority, and she is simply representing him? * In 1Tim 3:1 Paul says “if anyone desires to be an elder” if he meant only men, why use the Greek word “tis” and not a more descriptive word for male? * Is it possible to be a mutualist at home but a purely symbolic complementarian in the church on the basis that bishops are representatives of the apostles? * Elder-exclusive complementarianism is the only form that makes any sense to me, Biblically. What arguments, if any, do you see for stricter forms? * Does "husband of one wife" in 1 Tim. 3.2;3.12 have to be gender exclusive? Could it be translated as some have suggested as a "one-man" woman? * Comps: women cant teach/exercise auth. over men because 1 Tim 2.But Priscilla teaching Apollos is to a degree a man submitting to a woman’s teaching. How you understand this? * In Gen 3 God punished females with subjection to their husbands due to Eve's sin. Is Paul extrapolating this to church leadership positions as well in 1 Tim 2? * Do we need to read primogeniture into Genesis in order to be faithfully exegeting Genesis 2? * With so many Hapax Legomena in 1 Timothy, and 8 alone in 1 Timothy 2, why is it so often quoted as “the clearest passage on women” in the New Testament? * Does Gen. 3:15 indicate that sexism is from Satan, ie., that the enemy specifically targets women? If so, what are the implications for the church/Christians? See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Here’s the questions you’ll find when you unlock the full episode!* Are Egalitarian arguments similar to arguments from pro LGBTQ theologians? * 1 Corinthians 12 gives a list of spiritual gifts for church leadership and specifically doesn’t mention sex distinction. Are these roles specific to men only? * Which is a bigger risk - being wrongly complementarian or being wrongly egalitarian? What price do we pay in each case?* How do complementarians rationalize listening to female academics (such as those on your podcast) when they say Biblically women can't teach men?* “1 Tim 2:11: ‘A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.’ Once culturally liberating, now often restrictive—how do you handle that tension?”* In Eph 5, ppl teach about men & women like it transcends culture over time, but the bit on slaves is taught differently. How can we know how to differentiate?* How should the fact that Jesus chose 12 male Jewish apostles inform this question?* What is the complementarian rationale for keeping male/female distinctions while no longer keeping slave/free and Jew/Greek distinctions in Gal. 3:28?* Paul says, “ I do not permit a women to teach” he didn’t Say “God does not allow a women to teach” do you make anything about this being a “Paul” command Learn more about your ad choices. This is a different sort of TITR episode. Just three dudes (but mainly Jay and Brian) bantering around about Rock and Roll. Brian Zahnd is a pastor and writer. Jay Newman is a pitmaster and BBQ artist. Both are avid students of music, specifically Rock and Roll, as you'll see. I love Rock and Roll and love the history behind it all. As far as theology goes, we don't really talk about a theology of music, but Jay does give a rather brilliant overview of why Rock music is theologically necessary toward the end of our conversation. This episode is a talk I gave at the Center for Pastor Theologians annual conference held in Oak Park, IL, in September 2024. In this talk, I try to unpack what the Bible says about a Christian political identity by looking at the Scriptural themes of exile and Babylon. The talk was received fairly well, espeically by the Anabaptists in the back, who were hootin' and hollerin'. Others had some really thoughtful questions and pushback. -- If you've enjoyed this content, please subscribe to my channel! Micah is a 23 year old female who has been diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, where she has over 100 alters (what some people might think of as personalities, though this isn’t the most accurate term). Nathan, her father, is a former Pastor. Micah was diagnosed in January 2019, which began a remarkable journey of understanding and healing. I wanted to have this conversation for at least three reasons. (1) I’m curious about lots of different things, especially kinds of people and experiences that I don’t know much about. DID is certainly one of those areas. I’m bringing almost nothing to this table. (2) I’m particularly curious about minority experiences—people and stories and experiences that most people don’t have. (3) I think there can be a lot of fear and misunderstanding, which can lead to stigmatization, around certain psychological conditions like DID—especially with movies like Split, which we’ll get into. So, I hope this raw and honest conversation will help reduce the fear, misunderstanding, and indeed the stigma surrounding Dissociative Identity Disorder and other similar experiences. -- If you've enjoyed this content, please subscribe to my channel! In this episode, I review the forthcoming book (releases Sept 10th): The Widening of God's Mercy by Christopher B. Hays and Richard B. Hays. The book made quite a splash when it was announced last winter, since the book shows how Richard Hays changed his mind about same-sex marriage. He used to believe in traditional marriage, and has published well-known articles and book-chapters on it, but he now believes that God blesses same-sex marriage and this new book shows why. I recieved a pre-released copy of the book and have spent the last few weeks combing through it. This podcast review follows my written review, which you can find here: https://www.centerforfaith.com/blog/review-of-the-widening-of-god-s-mercy-by-christopher-b-hays-and-richard-b-hays -- If you've enjoyed this content, please subscribe to my channel! Most of all, he's a former baseball player and a huge baseball fan. We talk about that a bit.
